When people become a target at work, one of the first words that may cross their mind to describe their mistreatment is "bullying." The only problem with that is that workplace bullying really isn't legislated at this time. A number of states (I believe about 13) have anti-bullying legislation in the pipeline. However, none of the bills have been passed into law.As African Americans, this doesn't

Girls and sexual minorities suffer most Schools' current focus on bullying prevention may be masking the serious and underestimated health consequences of sexual harassment, according to James Gruber from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Susan Fineran from the University of Southern Maine in the US. Their research (1), just published online in Springer's journal Sex Roles, shows that although less frequent, sexual harassment has a greater negative impact on teenagers' health than the more common form of victimization, bullying. Gruber and Fineran's study, the first of its kind to compare bullying and sexual harassment victimization using equivalent measurements and time frames, looked at the frequency and health implications of both bullying and sexual harassment among 522 middle an
Today's example of society's downward spiral to wussification, which plays right into the hands of the anti-bullying movement, comes from the Washington Post, which reports that a Virginia elementary school has banned tag at recess:
Robyn Hooker, principal of Kent Gardens Elementary School, has told students they may no longer play tag during recess after determining that the game of chasing, dodging and yelling "You're it!" had gotten out of hand. Hooker explained to parents in a letter this month that tag had become a game "of intense aggression." ...
Many schools nationwide have whittled down playground activities in response to concerns about injuries, bullying or litigation. Dodge ball is a thing of the past in many places, and contact sports are often limited at recess. ...

Spreading rumors and gossiping may not cause bruises or black eyes, but the psychological consequences of this social type of bullying could linger into early adulthood, a new University of Florida study shows. In a study of 210 college students, the researchers discovered a link between what psychologists call relational victimization in adolescence and anxiety and depression in early adulthood, according to findings published in the journal Psychology in the Schools. Rather than threatening a child with physical violence, these bullies target a child's social status and relationships by shunning them, excluding them from social activities or spreading rumors, said Allison Dempsey, a doctoral student in the University of Florida College of Education and the study's lead author.

After refusing to allow an anti-bullying bill to move in the Senate for four sessions, Senate President David Williams finally capitulated. Or, did he? After "removing Jesus" from the House's version Williams designed a devilish counter punch. As Mark Hebert tell us, "[Williams] says kids who intimidate, harass or embarrass other kids should be sent to the court system where professionals can properly deal with them."I wonder what Supreme Court Chief Justice Joseph Lambert thinks about that. Is Williams really that far removed from the reality of today's schools? It's hard enough to get the courts to deal with a persistently violent 10-year old. They don't have anywhere to go with them. The idea of criminalizing kindergartners who embarrass another student is so misguided that Hebert wonder
Workplace bullying, such as belittling comments, persistent criticism of work and withholding resources, appears to inflict more harm on employees than sexual harassment, say researchers who presented their findings at the Seventh International Conference on Work, Stress and Health held in Washington, D.C. "As sexual harassment becomes less acceptable in society, organizations may be more attuned to helping victims, who may therefore find it easier to cope," said lead author M. Sandy Hershcovis, PhD, of the University of Manitoba. "In contrast, non-violent forms of workplace aggression such as incivility and bullying are not illegal, leaving victims to fend for themselves." Hershcovis and co-author Julian Barling, PhD, of Queen's University in Ontario, Canada, reviewed 110 studies conducte

My very good blogging friend Moonshadow, the author of KS Born has recently highlighted school bullying as a major concern. Her aim is to get bloggers united to help spread the word about this blight within our schools. So I have accepted the challenge and after receiving this in the mail, I've combined the two. Firstly I must say I’m not an expert on this matter even though I experienced bullying and the bullying of others during my education. For me I was luckier than most, as I was far bigger than my tormentors; who quickly learnt that I was more than a match. The best I can do is to be a resource to other sites and an outlet for others to express their views and lessons in life that may assist others. I truly hope so. Pogo was right--we have met the enemy and he is us. The enemy is not George Bush, Rick Santorum, the NSA, CIA, or any of the shady government agencies that spy on us, and desire to be our electronic babysitters.Actually, often the government storm troopers jump in because we demand it. Through out this week, there are two stories that I just cannot let go, which compels my to blog about it. They have to do with Megan Meier. The emergence of the Internet, as an electronic medium of new technology has brought tremendous changes in how people live in today’s information society. Millions of people are communicating within on-line communities, looking for information, connecting for discussions about countless topics, sharing stories, and, yes, attempting to form the relationships with another people. However, as the identity of the young is largely shaped through the feedback they receive from their peers becomes an essential part in the lives of young people, both in the real and in the virtual worlds.
Young people in particular are the ones who most often feel the need to meet the societal expectations and may therefore unconsciously engage in social comparisons. When it comes to teens the opinions of friends are especially valuable, which in that phase in a you

Bullying has become a bigger problem over the years thanks to new ways for bullies to terrorise their victims. What once was a playground tease has now become a bombardment of nasty E-mails and text messages. A recent survey revealed that 69% of school children have been bullied - that is an astonishing amount of unhappy children in our schools.
Not only has the number of bullying cases increased, but physical bullying is on the up. 50% of reported bullying cases involves physical violence with 34% of those violently attacked needing to have doctor or hospital care. Cyber bullying has made it increasingly harder to children to escape bullies. Victims of bullying are finding it harder to tell someone that they are being bullied because they can’t escape the taunts, not even at home.
Unfortunately for some children they feel the only way to escape their bullies is to skip school, isolate themselves or even end their own lives - why doesn’t the government act until there’s a trage
By: Alex Ellorde Ahh...the Internet...the amazing portal to a vast world of information, entertainment, and everything else in between. Internet technology has revolutionized the way we work, play, learn, and communicate. What started out as an experiment in a Harvard University laboratory is now one of the primary means by which people in the 21st century do business, exchange information, and relate with other people. Aside from its use as a research tool, the World Wide Web provides other services such as email, instant messaging, file sharing, online forums, and blogging. As a technology, it has made an impact on the social structure and behavior. As an example, there now actual cases of people who met online and later got married. But even the Internet is not immune from misuse or abuse. Like other inventions of man, it too has been subjected to various forms of wrong application. One good example is cyber-bullying, a term that refers to bullying and harassment by use of electronic
Bwah! Ha! Ha!Deja vu folks!Every year without fail, we tend to see this sort of thing happened all over again!I’m talking about our legendary seasonal price hike tradition that would mysteriously appear in every month of Ramadhan year after year!Well, I have to be honest here. I do feel that this year is the worst ever! Luckily for me, I’m not that type of Muslim who would normally purchase unnecessary food stuffs simply for the sake of Iftar or breaking fast. Really, my eating habits are much more humble in the month of Ramadhan. A simple ‘nasi lemak’ would do. Yet, I still feel the pinch! This year like always, some folks would come out complaining about those ridiculous price hikes. Good for them but they have done that for so many years all ready. No matter what they did to overcome it, the end results would always be the same. Complete failures! Those prices would continue to rise shamelessly. By Bill WardellInternet Bullying or Cyber Bullying is just one part of the growing problems that youth are creating for themselves and others. There are other cyber crimes that are now taking place, and one in particular that you may want to be more aware of is Happy Slapping. One of the first incidents of Happy Slapping occurred in 2004, in London.Happy Slapping is when an individual is struck by another person or gang of individuals and subsequently video taped or photographed while the beating is taking place. These photos and videos are then circulated by cell phone and/or uploaded and circulated over the internet. This form of assault is gaining momentum, and we are seeing more and more victims. This form of assault is not only dangerous, but, by putting it on the internet, it becomes available for anyone and everyone forever. This kind of harassment lives online forever.Happy Slapping occurs in many different places such as school property, parks, and many other places. Happy Slap
When people are under attack at work it’s common to find that they refer to their mistreatment as “bullying.” There’s only one problem with that… only about 13 states have anti-bullying legislation pending. However, not a single bill has been signed into law. Bullying isn’t officially legislated, which makes it harder to seek legal remedy.African Americans, like women and other groups, are considered a protected class. There are laws we can look to, when we encounter racists at work, who may use bullying as a tactic to cause harm to a coworker or subordinate.Much of the typical behavior of bullies would fall under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination against protected groups of people. Part of the anti-discrimination codes for the workplace is a prohibition against harassment and retaliation. Connected to harassment is language that states that it is illegal to subject an employee to a hostile and offensive work environment, which is the goal of a bu
It is possible to reduce competition and therefore aggression between cats by examining the aspects where the dispute arise. Research indicates that the main causes of continuing disputes between house cats is over access to owners and to areas in the inner home territory. When one cat is stroked or fussed by the owner, the other may feel its ownership of the human is being questioned. ‘Owner scents’ can be detected on the cat even if the activity has not been observed by the bullying cat. The cause of an act of aggression may have its roots in an action between the owner and the cat that occurred in the hours preceding the violence.
An owner who has competing cats in the same home should reduce petting and fussing, and offer enhanced security for the cats by installing extra bolt holes (boxes, igloos), plus more litter trays and scratching posts, to help combat territorial and ownership disputes.
It can be extremely disturbing for owners to see pets fight and aggression i
Bullying is the hottest of hot button issues in special education law.Generally the claim of the parent is that the student cannot receive the benefit of his IEP if he is being bullied. Bullying is a growing problem that is starting in earlier grades and lasting longer. (San Diego Tribune, 7/9/07). Courts and hearing officers are beginning to hold that disability-based harassment may result in a denial of FAPE. In Shore Regional High Sch Bd. of Educ v. P.S. 41 IDELR 234, 381 F.3d 194, (3d Cir. 8/30/04), the Third Circuit held that the school district’s failure to stop bullying may constitute a denial of FAPE. A bill that would have required school districts to create anti-bullying and anti-harassment policies won broad support in the House today, but suffered a fatal blow in the Senate, the Tallahassee Democrat is reporting. The Democrat quotes Sen. Stephen Wise, chairman of the Senate Education Appropriations Committee, as saying, "I don't want to talk about it any more. It's dead. These people are bullying me." At the risk of jumping in with the media frenzy surrounding the situation at VT, I just wanted to quote a part of the story that terribly saddens me.
From Yahoo News:
Classmates in Virginia, where Cho grew up, said he was teased and picked on, apparently because of shyness and his strange, mumbly way of speaking.
Once, in English class at Westfield High School in Chantilly, Va., when the teacher had the students read aloud, Cho looked down when it was his turn, said Chris Davids, a Virginia Tech senior and high school classmate. After the teacher threatened him with an F for participation, Cho began reading in a strange, deep voice that sounded “like he had something in his mouth,” Davids said.
“The whole class started laughing and pointing and saying, `Go back to China,’” Davids said.
Stephanie Roberts, 22, a classmate of Cho’s at Westfield High, said she never witnessed anyone picking on Cho in high school. But she said friends of hers who went to
The uniformed Police Department employees who patrol New York City's public schools are too quick to bully students over minor infractions, a civil rights group charged in a paper issued Sunday. The New York Civil Liberties Union said that in recent years it has received hundreds of complaints from both students and teachers about foul language, rough treatment and unwarranted arrests by the NYPD's 4,827 school safety agents. The safety agents are civilian employees of the police department and don't carry firearms. About 70 percent are women. The group said the agents, whose duties include breaking up fights and operating metal detectors, have also improperly taken on the role of enforcing school rules -- like the district's unpopular ban on iPods and cell phones.Donna Lieberman, the group's executive director, said too many safety agents go about their job with an authoritarian zeal more appropriate for guards screening prisoners. This from the C0ntraCostaTimes.

In the 1990 film Problem Child, starring the late John Ritter and the never-tiresome Gilbert Gottfried, Ritter's character, a pleasant wanna-be family man , adopts a 7 year-old boy, "Junior," with the hopes of raising a chip-off-the-old-block son. Instead, Junior [...]
Bully Monsanto is trying to get Mexico to plant its genetically modified corn, but Mexico is resisting. Mexico's agriculture department banned Monsanto and other companies from planting any GM corn in an effort to preserve the pure and ancient varieties Mexico has been growing for hundreds of years. But this is unlikely the last word on the matter, as Monsanto is standing firm and is won't give up until it gets its way.
Bullying elsewhere: These companies, via the American Soybean Association, are in the process of bullying the EU over their restrictions on GM soybeans. They will not be satisfied until they own all major crops the world over.
According to a report in the U.K's Hemel Gazette, the Catholic Church "is abdicating its responsibility for children's welfare by refusing to target homophobic bullying in schools." Evidently, the church has rejected repeated calls to institute any sort of policy for preventing homophobic bullying on school grounds.Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT union, is quoted as saying, "The Catholic Church is abdicating its responsibility to look after the health and well-being of youngsters." The article also notes that victims of homophobic bullying are not necessarily homosexual but may be labeled as such based on their appearance.Tags: Catholic church, church, religion, homophobia, bullying, education
Bullying is not just about lunch money anymore.
When I was in school bullies were the mean kids on the blacktop. They were the ones waiting after school to beat up on another kid that was usually no match for their size and strength. But there was at least a “safe zone” from school bullies: Home. [...]
