      Breastfeeding, Beautiful Teeth For Baby
We do not say it enough: breastfeeding is the best way to feed a child up to 6 months minimum. The mother's milk contains everything that the baby needs on the nutritional plan to have a healthy bone and dental.Another advantage is requesting more effort than bottle feeding, sucking on breast promotes the development of facial muscles and jaws. The teeth of babies fed by their mothers are better aligned and thereafter require less care orthodontic! If, despite everything you opt for the bottle, choose a dummy whose form is the closest possible to that of the nipple.

      Breastfeeding Boosts the Child's Intelligence
The precise cause is not yet knownBy Stefan Anitei, Science EditorMay 7, SoftpediaCurrently, in many western countries, less than 1% of women breastfeed continuously for the first six months of the baby's life. In the UK, the category most prone to breastfeeding was found to be formed of well educated, professional women, older than 30 and mothers for the first time. The fear of ending up with saggy breasts (although recent researches have come to infirm this theory), commodity, lack of time and other factors have contributed to this low percentage. With all that, studies have shown that colostrum, that yellowishmilk secreted after birth, is the first package of immune factors delivered to the infant's body. Breastfed babies are five times less likely to get gastroenteritis as compared to f

      Importance Of BreastFeeding
Importance of Breastfeeding - Overview As a general convention, issues are discussed when people start questioning the traditions being followed for long, or show an increased interest in it. The same has happened with the idea of breastfeeding. As a rule, mothers breastfed their infants for a year and sometimes longer, till the birth of the second child. But these days, due to paucity of time and as a matter of convenience, some mothers choose to shift to powdered, bottled milk as a substitute for breast milk. The crux of the matter here is to popularise breast milk simply because there is just no substitute that can be available for it.There are two aspects why breastfeeding is important for the mother as well as for the child. One is the nutritional aspect

Clearly we need Congress to pass the Breastfeeding Promotion Act (H.R. 3799) now--before more mothers are stigmatized and humiliated for breastfeeding. But this Act is currently stalled in Congress, and isn't going to move forward without increased citizen pressure. Breastfeeding and pumping
I breastfeed my baby, however I don't do it the traditional way. I strictly pump and feed him the breastmilk in a bottle. My first son was a preemie, so I didn't have much choice while he was in the NICU. Once he came home, he still had a weak suck and he was used to the bottle, so I just kept pumping. This time around I gave the traditional way a chance for a couple of days, but I prefer pumping. I just didn't have the time or patience. Pumping & giving the breastmilk in a bottle is just easier for me. I don't have to worry about how much he's getting. I can see it. I also don't have to worry about engorgement. I just pump a little longer if need be. The important thing with pumping is to set up a schedule and stick to it. My son is on an every 3 hour eating schedule, so that's when I pum

The only problem so far, is he is very sensitve to the foods I eat. Broccoli is the worst. It sends him into complete screaming that lasts for at least an hour. The first few days after he came home from the hospital, all he did was eat & sleep. Then my mother brought over broccoli & cheese soup and the screaming began. At first it didnt't register. I thought it was just the adjustment of him to life outside the womb, a growth spurt or maybe silent reflux. Then I read a list of foods to avoid while breastfeeding and there was broccoli. Stopped eating it & the screaming stopped. Other foods I need t

      changing the language around breastfeeding…

The problem is… Breastfeeding is the norm… Formula can be dangerous and the choice between breastfeeding and Formula is not a simple choice to make, children die because they are not breastfed, really it should not be a choice at all… we need to make the language reflect that. Here is a Hathor comic that is a great example… (oh… and just a disclaimer… I got a few comments and e-mails from some moms who seem to love to hate this blog…Though I do believe that it should not be a choice, I do know that Formula is sometimes that lesser of two evils and that the choice is

Is it true the breasts will sag with breastfeeding?
Many people, including moms and moms to be, believe that breastfeeding can make the breasts sag. This is also one of the key factor that hinders moms from breastfeeding. Is it true? I asked my gynae about this. His answer is: As long as during pregnancy and soon after delivery of baby, once the breasts enlarged (due to hormone changes), with or without breastfeeding the breasts will most likely to sag. His explaination is that, the breasts are like elastic rubber bands or balloons — once enlarged/expanded, it is hard to return to the previous size/firmness. Unless the mother is very young (full of collagen??), it is generally common to be sagged. [Added: Conclusion - Sagging breasts are NOT caused by breastfeeding, but probably caused by pregnancy and age!] I think this is a sacrifice a mom would have to accept, especially if we are not young when giving birth (like early 20??). Sigh! So, no excuse not to breastfeed. That’s my point. (Or to give birth early? LOL!)

      Poses/Positions for Breastfeeding
There are many positions for babies in breastfeeding. I’m not going to write all them here. Only 2 things that I want to highlight in my post regarding this topic. Key for ‘Correct’ Positioning I never understood this until Lilian pointed out when I posted a question for my friend V on MMB (her baby refused to suckle). Whatever methods that you might want to adopt for breastfeeding, one thing that you must ensure is to have the baby’s head and stomach facing the same direction. [source: Pregnancy.about.com] Most often, the mistake done is to hold the baby with stomach facing upwards, and then turn the baby’s head towards (more…)

      Breastfeeding is not Obscene!
This was brought to my attention through blog browsing over at Michele's Sparks & Butterflies...and I felt the need to pass it on!***********The all-mighty YouTube has become as ignorant as other sites, removing a video that the LMJ put up in honor of breastfeeding.Incidences like this make breastfeeding seem obscene and disgusting. To a young mother like I once was, it makes the nature of feeding your child uncomfortable!! I, personally, breastfed my oldest and my middle child, but not my third. I don't care either way if you did or not...I more care that we are made to feel vile for doing something so simple when, as others have pointed out, videos of starlets and not-so-starlets shaking their bits are left up as "enjoyment". Why not give others the ability to decide if they want to watch a video that is no more vile (in fact, less so) than a stripper dancing for dollars. Breastfeeding Twins Tips - Follow Up
A recent comment on the old post Breastfeeding Twins Tips was unimpressed with the advice to get a copy of Mothering Multiples and the EZ-2-Nurse Twins pillow. The guy noted that women all over the world throughout all of history have been nursing without books or special pillows so why throw in the extra expense. It’s a fair question. Of course, most women now buy parenting and breastfeeding books so it doesn’t seem that odd to me to recommend one over another. And, to the best of my knowledge, Mothering Multiples is the only book on the market that covers twin-specific issues in detail. And there are twin-specific issues as well as issues that are just common nursing problems. I, at least, had no one I could ask. My mother didn’t nurse and certainly no one around me had any idea what to do with a kid who wouldn’t latch. My breastfeeding class stuck to “breastfeeding is SO NATURAL and all you have to do is put the baby to the breast and everything

Healthy, nourishing, and digestible milk can be procured only from a healthy parent; and it is against common sense to expect that, if a mother impairs her health and digestion by improper diet, neglect of exercise, and impure air, she can, nevertheless, provide as wholesome and uncontaminated a fluid for her child, as if she were diligently attentive to these important points. Every instance of indisposition in the nurse is liable to affect the infant. And this leads me to observe, that it is a common mistake to suppose that, because a w

Conflict of Exclusive Breastfeeding and Plain Water
What is Exclusive Breastfeeding? The definition of Exclusive Breastfeeding is that baby is given ONLY mother’s breastmilk without any other food or drinks (includes plain water). Why Not Water? The element that protects baby from sickness, found in mother’s milk, also forms a protection layer on the inner surface of baby’s intestine. Plain water or formula milk can ‘wash away’ those protection coats. As a result of that, baby loses the protection he could get from breastmilk. [source: Water Photo Gallery] That’s why I’ve been mentioning that it does more harm than benefit if baby is given water, here and here. Baby is also easily exposed to allergens and pollutants/contaminants, in both water and formula milk. Unless you bottle feed your baby with expressed milk, we do not worry about these in mother’s milk. Another reason for not giving water is to do with nutrition value. If baby is given plain water, baby will drink less of mother

      Benefits of Breastfeeding
There is no argument that breastfeeding is good for both baby and mother. Here are some great benefits to help convincing you to breastfeeding your own children, and to help you convince people around you… FOR BABY Contains the right compositions of nutrients for baby’s growing needs, automatically adjusted as baby grows. High protein fat and acids (DHA, ARA, AA, etc) which are easily digested. Studies shown that IQ of breastfed babies are 5.2 times higher than those who are not breastfed. [American Journal of Clinical, 1991] Contains human growing hormones and enzymes that cannot be duplicated in infant formula. Contains antibodies that are not found in cow’s milk, when mother is sick antibody is found in the breastmilk for immediate protection to the baby. Fewer diseases like inner-ear infection, respiratory infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, meningitis, urinary tract infections, gastroenteritis, obesity, SIDS and diarrhea Protects baby from colic, asthma, eczema

      Successful Breastfeeding Tips (part 3)
Continue from part 2… [More breastfeeding tips can be found on part 1 and part 2] When Arriving Home Feed Directly, At Least First 2 Weeks Continue to feed on demand, and directly. Do not express breastmilk in the first 2 weeks. No doubt, you will wonder how much milk you produce, whether the amount is enough for your baby. The reason I ask you not to express is not to let you confirm your doubt. Usually in the first 2 weeks, milk hasn’t come in, and the breastmilk contains mostly thick colostrum. If you start expressing early, you might be able to get only tiny few drops and get panic. Most mothers start to supplement at this stage as their confidence deflated, when they see little yield in expressing. Round The Clock Feeding As milk production is highest at night, do continue to breastfeed on demand especially at night. If baby gets older and feed less at night, you might want to consider expressing at night to maintain milk supply. I used to express at 2am and 5

      Successful Breastfeeding Tips (part 2)
Continue from part 1… When Baby Is Born, in Hospital Begin Breastfeeding ASAP It is crucial to start breastfeeding early, preferably in the first hour. This is to give the signal to your body to start making milk. During this period, don’t expect there will be milk flowing like you see in other moms who brags about how many ounces they get (myself included :P). What the breasts can produce during this period (some started even before baby is born) is called the colostrum. This yellowish, oil rich liquid is the most precious ‘gold liquid’ for the newborn. Compared to matured milk, the colostrum has 3 times the antibody, 2 times protein, and higher vitamins A, E and growing factors (hormones). Don’t worry about the volume. Newborn’s stomach is very small, only can accommodate around 20ml (4 teaspoon) of liquid. Newborn can only drink little but (more…)

Here is a list of things that I’d rate them ‘must do’. There are just so many things that you could do to help the success and I am going to list down only these prominent ones. If you think I miss out any important ones, please highlight in comment? Before Baby’s Arrival Mixing With The Right People It is important to listen and learn from people who have successfully breastfed their children, instead of listening to the advice from people who failed or never tried breastfeeding. I guess this is common sense, but unfortunately there aren’t many people around us did this! (more…)

      Things That Fail Breastfeeding
Recently I have been approached by friends and relatives on many questions related to breastfeeding. I then realized that I’ve ignored this topic completely in my blog - which I originally intended to do! So, I’m going to revive this mission. Hope these breastfeeding posts can help moms to be. I have met so many mothers who failed to breastfeed their children, and the core reasons are mostly similar. Now, whenever I heard of new moms who failed in breastfeeding, without having to meet them I can nearly guess their reasons correctly. The reasons can’t run away from the followings. Delay In First Feed Many moms were told that they don’t have much milk during the first few days, which happened to be true. Instead of breastfeeding frequently to stimulate milk production, they took the wrong step by supplementing with infant formula. As a result of it, the mothers’ breasts would not produce milk. The effect is like chicken and egg. Without stimulation,

An easy decision, smoking or breastfeeding?
The decision between smoking or breastfeeding is easy, because smoking and breastfeeding are bad for mom and baby. Both will suffer the ill effects of the toxins and poisons contained in cigarettes. Even though the truth about smoking has been known for many years, many women continue to smoke during pregnancy and while they are breastfeeding. In fact, some women smoke during breastfeeding. When it comes to smoking or breastfeeding, nursing mothers should know that it is a dangerous practice that should be avoided. The risk to the baby is compounded if the mother smokes more than 20 cigarettes per day. However, any amount of cigarette smoking is harmful to a baby. The more cigarettes a woman smokes, the more harmful the effects are to her baby. For some nursing mothers, heavy smoking can reduce a mother's milk supply and on rare occasions can cause symptoms in the breastfeeding baby, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Smoking or breastfeeding means that a

There are more Bunko clubs around here than you can shake a stick at! It's the perfect opportunity (and excuse) for eight women to get together and see everybody's new home decorating project and eat somebody's cooking besides their own. Some clubs dress up and really put on the dog decking the tables and themselves out in fine style. Some serve cocktails and finger foods and say to "come as sloppy as you like". I want the best of both worlds and DH doesn't mind babysitting twice a month so I belong to one of each. It's more or less understood that this is a mom's night out, but we do make exceptions for breastfeeding moms of newborns. Breastfeeding photos can be beautiful
Breastfeeding is one of the most beautiful things between a mother and a baby. It is a perfect combination of nurturing and nutrition. Babies get everything they need to fend off harmful viruses and illnesses, as well as all the necessary nutrients, while forming a powerful bond with their mothers. That's why breastfeeding photos are becoming more and more popular. In these modern times, anything goes and that means breastfeeding photos. The days when women were confined to their bedrooms when pregnant and nursing are long gone. Now, the joy of a woman's body and the gift that she can share with her baby can be cherished with the lasting memories that a photograph can provide. New mothers and babies spend a lot of time together in the first year and a lot of that time is either spent sleeping or breastfeeding. It is only natural for the mother to want to preserve these memories with some tasteful and romantic breastfeeding photos. If you decide that you would like to have bre

I'm not about to give up my brand spanking new Facebook account, but they are a bunch of prudes about the breastfeeding pictures, so spread the word about the League of Maternal Justice. Here are some things that I experienced while breastfeeding that they don't necessarily talk about. The first month is BRUTAL! My babies latched on just fine but my breasts did not agree at all. Cracked, bleeding nipples and extreme pain every time they latched on.I would have to count to 10 so that I wouldn't scream during latch on for those first few weeks.Forget the Lansinoh, go with the Soothies gel pads. I don't think they were around when I had Adam. Keep them clean and dry for maximum life!Once the pain subsides, and you can latch your baby on without turning all the lights on, it is smooth sailing (3-4 weeks).I was obsessed with using both breasts equally when Dova decided to prefer one over the other around 12 weeks. While I lied sideways in bed, I would prop her up on a pillow to get

8 Tips On Proper Breastfeeding Your Baby
      1. Breast size has no bearing at all on the ability of a woman to breastfeed her baby. Women with small breasts sometimes produce more milk than those with full heavy breasts consisting mostly of fatty tissues. The milk is formed in the glandular tissues that develop during pregnancy and passes to the small sacs in the breasts and out through the nipples.2. Ask your obstetrician or nurse what to do to prepare the breasts, especially the nipples, during pregnancy, to avoid sore nipples later on. ^? ; ^^"^3. If you will deliver your baby in a hospital, ask your doctor if your baby can be brought to you for nursing as soon as possible, instead of being given a bottle as practiced in most if not all hospitals. It is believed that the watery fluid called colostrum which precedes milk provides the infant a natural immunity from many infections. The colostrum also serves as a milk laxative that cleans out the first stool or bowel movement the baby passes out after birth.4. Even if yo

The convenient and necessary breastfeeding bra
One of the most necessary tools for a nursing mother is a good quality breastfeeding bra. This is one of the most important of the breastfeeding supplies. It makes breastfeeding more comfortable and convenient. Each breastfeeding bra comes with a variety of helpful features that can help make breastfeeding more comfortable for mother and baby. There are many different styles of maternity, nursing or breastfeeding bras. For many women, it is important to wear a breastfeeding bra, because the bra can reduce stretching of tissues that can result in sagging. Women with larger breasts are usually more comfortable wearing one. Many women will prefer to be fitted for a breastfeeding bra. The breasts begin to prepare for lactation early on in the pregnancy and some women will outgrow their usual bra size earlier than others. Usually, most of the changes to the breasts have occurred by around four months gestation, which is a good time to be fitted. A correctly fitted breastfeeding bra gives a

Breastfeeding pillows also help to reduce and prevent problems with nursing and make it a much less stressful experience for everyone involved. However, mothers considering using breastfeeding pillows should know that not all breastfeeding pillows are alike. Some pillows offer support for different sizes of babies and others are specifically designed for preemies or twins, as well as breast and bottle feeding situations. Breastfeeding is not only good for the baby’s health but it is also very beneficial for the mother in many ways. Breastfeeding Provides Essential Nutrition To The Baby Breast milk is beneficial to the baby and her mother in many ways. Basically, it provides the optimum amount and type of nutrition to the baby for its healthy growth. Breast milk contains lactoferrin, an essential element that has many functions. It helps in iron absorption and fights the bacteria that can harm the gut. Breastfeeding also provides lipases that help in the metabolism of fats and gives other useful hormones that help in the development and growth of the baby. Besides quenching thirst, mother’s milk also satisfies hunger and gets the baby to be accustomed to various tastes and flavors that vary with the diet of the mother. Breastfeeding Tips
Choose a comfortable place for breastfeeding. The more relaxed you are, the easier it will be. If you or your baby are easily distracted, find somewhere quiet. You may feel dehydrated while breastfeeding so always keep a glass of water handy. Holding your baby correctly when breastfeeding is essential so your arms and back do not get sore.Bring your baby's head close to your breast and gently touch his cheek with your nipple. His head should turn towards your nipple. Then, gently brush his lip with your nipple to encourage him to latch on. When your baby latches on correctly his mouth should cover the entire nipple and a large portion of the surrounding breast tissue. If latching hurts, break the suction by gently inserting a clean finger between the baby's gums and your nipple. Try again. Do not get discouraged if you (and your baby) find breastfeeding hard at first. This is quite normal. Your baby will

A group of mothers recently bared their breasts in front of the Supreme Court last Tuesday in a creative move against the case filed by big companies challenging ad restrictions on milk substitutes to breastfeeding. The SC favored the petitioners by issuing a temporary restraining order against the enforcement of milk ad prohibitions. But the aging mothers did a good job of highlighting the need to promote breastfeeding. Although, they were not totally half-naked as slogans were painted over their breasts. However, it still involved baring, a form of protest action which I am not in favor of. But still, this recent breast baring is more original compared to the worn out naked-running gimmick pursued by some youths last opening of classes. (more…)

and you thought breastfeeding one was impossible…
think again. With love, patience and perseverance anything is possible, actually I also recently heard of a jo’burg mom of triplets who breastfeeds Breast-feeding my twins By Juan Bainton As an expectant mom of twins, I had decided to give breast-feeding a good try. I was positive that I could manage feeding two babies and did not pause to consider bottle feeding. I think that half my battle was won - being positive from day one. Having the girls born at 32 weeks got the breast-feeding off to a rocky start. Feeding one of them was an issue on its own - let alone two! Megan weighed 2,09kg at birth and spent her hospital time in the nursery. Darian, however, weighed in at 1,73kg and for 16 days stayed in the neo-natal ICU. Feeding preemies was no doubt an enormous challenge. Although they were born by c-section, I was up and about between the nursery, ICU and bed very quickly. One doesn’t have an option with twins! Megan could be brought to me to feed and only received form

      Extraordinary Breastfeeding
This video is bizarre and slightly disturbing, as it tells the story of an English mother who still breastfeeds her daughter at 8… yes Eight years old. Now that is a bit strange, and makes me feel slightly nauseous. I was breastfed, not that I can remember but my mum informs me I was, and that’s fine, I think breastfeeding a baby is perfectly natural and normal. I don’t even shirk or look away when a new mother does it in public, and actually think it’s quite beautiful. But, that’s for babies, not 8 year olds who are at school, and have friends and lives of their own, isn’t that just a bit sick?!? This was originally part of a British documentary called ‘Extraordinary Breastfeeding‘ in which some mothers justified their decision to carry on breastfeeding their children long after most people have stopped doing so. The woman featured in this clip strikes me as a bit weird herself, and having a skewed vision of how to bring kids up, bu

Fatwa over adult breastfeeding gets cleric fired
Yes, you read that right. A cleric from the Egyptian university Al-Azhar has been fired over a controversial fatwa that allowed breastfeeding between unrelated adults in order to deal with Islamic social rules forbidding the mixing of unrelated men and women. The funny thing is that they’re all pissed off over something Mohamed said himself: ‘A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hadhaifa, lived with him and his family in their house. She (i. e. the daughter of Suhail came to Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) and said: Salim has attained (purbety) [sic] as men attain, and he understands what they understand, and he enters our house freely, I, however, perceive that something (rankles) in the heart of Abu Hudhaifa, whereupon Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) said to her: Suckle him and you would become unlawful for him, and (the rankling) which Abu Hudhaifa feels in his heart will disappear. She returne

      Complaining about breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is superior to bottle-feeding in many ways, both for mom and baby. I know. Still, I have some complaints. First of all, it hurts, especially the first week, especially when the little baby seems desperate, flailing, kicking, grasping (?), every single touch hurts. Second, now the task of feeding rests solely on the mom. Day and night, you are the sole feeder. Whenever the
