It is an eye disease that can lead to blindness.How? A group of men (18-40 years old) were told to perform a test, by lifting weights on a bench press. The first test, they did 4 repetitions, exhaling when lifting, and inhaling when lowering. But they held their breath instead of exhaling on the last repetition.For the 2nd test, they exhaled per normal at the last repetition.Results90% of the men increased in Intraocular Pressure (IOP, pressure in the eye) from the 1st test, whereas the 2nd test occurred to only 62% of them. Billie Piper was rushed to hospital after she suffered from a sudden loss of eyesight. It has been said that Billie was dining at The Ivy restaurant in London when her eyes became blurred when she stepped outside to have a cigarette. She then tried to cover her face up when the photographer’s bulbs started flashing and was in obvious discomfort. Billie has said to have panicked when she woke up the following morning and could not open her eyes; she was then taken to Moorfield’s Eye Hospital in Central London. A friend of Billie said that “She’s being looked at but we don’t know the score. It could be that her eyesight has been damaged or that she has some form of infection or other condition.” Experts have said that retinal damage can be caused by camera flashes but this is rare and could serve as a trigger for existing conditions. Daniel Craig is out, and Mark Ruffalo is in for Blindness. The movie is a high-concept pic from Constant Gardener director Fernando Meirelles, a sort of post-apocalyptic flick about a town where everyone suddenly goes blind. The only person who can see is Julianne Moore, who plays the wife of a doctor. The doctor himself was to be played by Daniel Craig, but Variety says Mark Ruffalo now has the part. Ruffalo is a good actor, and should have no problem pretending to bump into walls and trip over curbs. As for the movie, the concept sounds almost too clever. The tough thing will be keeping it from becoming a comedy. I’m sure they’ll amp up the tension with life and death situations to offset all the inevitable prat falls and unintentionally collisions. Julianne Moore will probably have kids to worry about and obsess over, she usually does. Worried mothers are her thing. source

Jose Saramago is another of the Nobel Prize for Literature winners of whom I was blissfully unaware until I heard about Blindness, the novel that won him that prize. But now I can easily understand why this Portuguese writer was chosen for the award.Much of Blindness, set in an unnamed major city of an unnamed country, has somewhat of a fairy tale feel to it. That feel comes from the way that government officials and the military react when faced with a sudden epidemic of "white blindness" that swiftly strikes the city. I have struggled my entire adult life with a peculiar condition called prosopagnosia, also known as “face blindness”. I have great difficulty recognizing many faces that should be familiar to me. It’s not that I’m incapable of telling one person from another, but it takes me much longer than the average person to see a face and identify whether or not I know the person.I only learned the name for this condition within the last year when I read an article about it in the New York Times.
