Our feline friends are constantly being studied. Their behavior fascinates us and keeps us guessing why they act the way they do. Here is some research I found around the web about why cats bite us.Cats will bite out of playfulness or aggression. When a cat is content, a cat will playfully nip, which is a type of bite which is weak and harmless. A common misunderstanding about the motivation behind a cat's bite is that it is a form of affection. People most likely assume this because a cat will sometimes bite suddenly while it is being petted. A petting-induced bite is not a form of affection, but rather a mildly aggressive signal to inform the human to stop petting. While this behavior may seem unexpected to humans, a cat will usually give other subtle indications, such as "tail-lashing o

How Do I Stop My Dog Biting?
Nipping - the playful biting and mouthing of your hands and clothes by your dog - is particularly common among puppies, but can also occur in older dogs that haven't been taught proper bite inhibition. It's natural for dogs to mouth and nip. They explore the world using their mouths - to a dog, his mouth is as important as eyes and hands are to us.Nipping is very different from true aggression: it's a form of communication, interaction, exploration, and play. From birth, pups use their mouths to explore the den, their mother, and their littermates. From a few weeks old, they use their mouths to play with their siblings: puppies play by biting and mouthing each other. Some adult dogs - usually, those with owners who encourage rough play, or who were removed from the litter at too early an a

Here are a few facts that may help you understand why your dog is biting, and a few tips on how you can help your dog overcome their habit. First of all, it is important to understand why your dog bites. The main reason is the canine instinct that all dogs have. Long ago, before dogs became domestic animals, they were wild and ran around in packs. The reason they bite is because of their instinct to dominate. Biting is a way dogs are able to show their authority and dominance over other dogs in the pack. Because of this instinct, your dog is biting in order to establish dominance and control. Politically correct K9s headbutt instead of biting
People are going overboard (way overboard!) with political correctness, and now, dogs in Wales are following suit. The UK’s K9 Magazine is reporting that North Wales Police are now training their police dogs to headbutt rather than bite criminals. Officers say the toothless tactic provides a safer way to tackle uncooperative offenders, and dog squads may soon adopt it across the country. But critics say it is another example of political correctness gone mad - putting the rights and safety of criminals before cutting crime and protecting the public. […] ‘Instead of biting, the dog is muzzled and launches itself like a missile at the midriff of the target,’ said Deputy Chief Constable of North Wales, Clive Wolfendale. […] The scheme was launched after the Association of Chief Police Officers published a paper for dog handlers on human rights. In it, police dog handlers in a position where they are considering setting their dog after a suspect should ask a

How to Stop Your Bird from Biting
One of the biggest problems bird owners have with their pets is the tendency birds have to bite. Birds bite for a variety of reasons, which makes breaking this bad habit a bit of a challenge. Luckily, it is often possible to stop birds from biting. Newly weaned baby birds often turn from adorable cuddle bugs to vampire like little creatures literally overnight. The shock of picking up that sweet baby, only to end up with bloody hands, has caused more than one bird owner to decide to never handle his bird again. Since this is one type of biting that is usually possible to break, it's a shame to give up on your newly weaned bird. Although he doesn't have teeth, your baby is going through something similar to a teething stage. He is exploring his surroundings with his beak and often doesn't realize the damage he is inflicting on his owner. Unfortunately, older birds that bite are a bit harder to work with. There are several reasons they start biting, including fear, dominance, aggressi

Help! My Puppy Won’t Stop Biting Me And It’s Starting To Hurt!
Dogs are not born with soft mouths, but they can learn to bite softly if taught properly, which means plenty of information and communication from you and from other dogs. Interacting with other dogs is critical to teaching your puppy bite inhibition. When two dogs play together and one bites too hard, the other one cries and runs away. This behavior helps to teach the biter to play-bite softly. Normal puppies can and should play-bite continually in social interactions, because biting and mouthing are normal canine behaviors. Puppies and young adolescent dogs have a physical and psychological need to use their mouths. Remember, dogs use their mouths the way humans use their hands. Soft mouth exercises need to begin as soon as you get your new puppy. Puppy teeth are sharp, but their jaws are underdeveloped so these exercises should not be painful to you. When your puppy is mouthing your hand or fingers, monitor their bite pressure. If your puppy bites too hard, screech “OUCH” very l

If your hand and fingers are in their mouth with the food, they will not easily be able to bite. With an older dog that is already growling and biting, it may be more difficult.. Be an “alpha dog” and you will be able to correct the problem.. Listen to the podcast for me details.. If you liked this post, buy some catnip or a bone!

      Biting the bullet once again
It was Friday and the last opportunity to get out paddling, however there was still no water in the rivers so once again I headed out with the group of sea paddlers that I had ventured out with yesterday. Today, however their trip was something slightly more extravagant to yesterday's jaunts around the islands off Arisaig so I was put in a sea boat (fibre-glass Skerry), which was going spare. I would now be able to keep up with the group on the planned 10.5 mile paddle. The location of the trip was to be Loch Hourn, an isolated sea loch, accessible only by a twenty-five mile single track road, found on the northern tip of the Knoydart peninsula. At first the prospect of this single track road terrified me, but on completing the drive, before we even got on the water and off paddling, the day had very nearly beaten all those that had gone before it. The scenery along this single track road was some of the most spectacular I had seen and something that not every one will see in thei

This section wasn't the hardcore river paddler or thrill seeking adrenaline junkie, well some of them maybe, but instead they were sea paddlers. Paddlers who went out paddling for enjoyment and to discover new places from a vantage point very few people can say they have experienced. However, I did not have a long, pointy 16ft+ sea boat, instead I had my dad's Diesel. I was told I would be fine in such craft as they were only pottering around the small chain of islands south of Mallaig. We headed off at 10 o'clock and arrived at our destination some 90 minutes later. In good sea kayaking fashion I'll include a map - cheers Ordnance Survey. Is it normal for my lab to be this mouthy? An article on biting / nipping / puppy mouthing.
Anyone who has done their research on the Labrador retriever will know that these are dogs that love to have things in their mouths. It’s what they were bred to do and most of them do it very well. However, it is important that we as humans teach our Labs what is appropriate to put their mouths on and what isn’t. This includes humans and their body parts.Puppies of all breeds need to nip, mouth, and chew. It is part of their normal development. If you have ever had the chance to watch puppies play together, you see that they use their mouths a lot. Puppies explore their world with their mouths. It is how they learn many of their lessons on how to get along in the world. A puppy’s littermates are some of her best teachers for learning what is appropriate puppy mouthing and what is not. Since humans have domesticated the dog and as a result, separate our puppies from the litter at about eight weeks of age, much of this teaching falls on us.There is a very good reason why most good
