      Biotech ETF Looking Bullish
A few months ago we saw the biotechs showing relative strength as can be seen by the rising ratio line from May going into June. What followed was an explosive rally in July. You'll notice in the above chart that the MACD triggered a buy signal in early July which turned out to be quite profitable. I believe we are seeing the same pattern take place right now. In the above chart of XBI (

Send In The Clones (Biotech Is Jonzilla)
How awesome would it be to have a clone? You might be tempted to think that I’d get a little more writing done if I had one, but if anything, I’d probably be writing less. Hell, I’m pretty hard-up for good conversation around these parts (what with neighbours obsessed with kicking and rapping, stealing medication from the Elderly and rooting their cats), so chances are I’d spend most of my time getting drunk and watching re-runs of King of the Hill with my clone. Sure, it’d be fun for the first few days, until the money and the beer ran out. I’m a thirsty motherfucker at the best of times, so I’d imagine my clone (Jon 2.0) would be doubly so. Sooner or later, we’d be bound to get into a fight about something and quite frankly, I’m so out of shape that I’m not sure if I could kick my own ass, should the need arise. Which Would You Invest In - Biotech or IT?
Which is more important - Biotech or IT? Do we show it by our investments? Do we encourage one over the other by legislation? If there were two stories, two competing headlines, one for the new iPhone and one for the recent advance in diabetes research, which do you read? Which is more important for our future? Perhaps most people consider it sufficient to read about pharmaceuticals in the context of which celebutart (Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, or Nichole Ritchie) has been arrested this week.I was intrigued by Guy Kawasaki's interview with Moira Gunn that he posted yesterday. I'm not sure I care for the title. I think that it might hurt her ability to be taken seriously but that is between Moira and Guy I suppose. My thoughts were piqued by one of the questions he asked? "Just how pervasive is biotech in our everyday lives?" I imagine that very few people realize how pervasive it is. Her answer was very enlightening. (the link above will take you there. I'm not s

Cheaper, Cleaner Ethanol from Biotech Corn
Cutting costs: A Michigan State University technician works with transgenic corn plants that could help lower the cost of making ethanol from plant stems and leaves. Credit: Mariam Sticklen, Michigan State University Cheaper, Cleaner Ethanol from Biotech CornThe genetically-modified plants break down their own cellulose, making it possible to use waste biomass to produce ethanol.Researchers have genetically engineered transgenic corn plants that produce enzymes that can turn their leaves and stems into sugar by breaking down cellulose. The plants could lower the cost of creating ethanol from these sources, making such biofuel more competitive with that produced from corn kernels, the primary source of ethanol in the United States today.Cellulosic sources of ethanol, such as waste biomass and switchgrass, are attractive because they are cheap and abundant. But converting cellulose, a complex carbohydrate, into sugars that can be fermented to make ethanol is more expensive than converti

      The Biotech Short Squeeze
I came across a great article over at Biotech Health Investor about the biotech short squeeze. A short squeeze is when a rapidly rising stock price escalates because short sellers need to buy stock back to cover their shorts. This causes the stock price to rise even higher. This happened very recently with Dendreon’s short squeeze following the good news about one of their primary drugs, Provenge. Prior to the approval, 30% of outstanding shares were shorted. After the initial good news, the stock gapped up from $5.22 to $12.93, and over the course of the next week reached a high of $25.25 from the resulting short squeeze. The article over at Biotech Health Investor looks at a few other biotech companies with upcoming decisions and a heavy short interest. Could be a good opportunity to cash in on a few short squeezes, if the news is good.

DuPont to set up plant biotech research centre in Hyderabad
Mumbai: DuPont will set up plant biotech research centre at the company's proposed knowledge in Hyderabad, its first such facility outside the US. The $20-million knowledge center is part of the company's $100-million reinvestment plan and will focus on crop genetics to aid in the production of advanced seed products. DuPont currently has 20 crop genetics scientists working at a temporary facility near the planned site. The company expects the number of crop genetics scientists to grow to approximately 100 by year-end. "The global demand for agricultural crops is very strong. We have the science to help farmers and others across the value chain and this research centre is going to help us do that faster,'' said William Niebur, vice president, DuPont Crop Genetics Research and Development, in a release. Plant biotech scientists here will develop biotech traits and technologies that will be incorporated into multiple crops for markets the world over. The trait discov

From Pinoy Explorer to the BioTech Chronicles
As you may have noticed by now, my blog carries a new name, instead of Pinoy Explorer it now says BioTech Chronicles. Are you seeing things? Well no, I’m renaming this blog to the BioTech Chronciles for the following reasons of which I will explain to the fullest of my abilities. The name Pinoy Explorer, never rubbed off on me. It was fanciful but looking back at the past seven months of this blog’s existence, I’ve never really done justice to the name. I even consulted my non-blogging friends on this and they say the same thing. When they hear the name Pinoy Explorer before seeing the site, they have preconceptions that I have stories about my nature trips, expeditions, science experiments etc coupled with pictures there of. Sure those are preconceptions but I find myself in the same standing as my anonymous-non-commenting-non-blogging friends/readers. Though I’d love to live up to the name, as of now I’m unable to do so. I’m still stuck in the clas
