The most obvious use of phages is of course direct phage therapy. Although exciting, there are many other uses of phage that are just as revolutionary, but tend to slip by. In my last article, I hinted at a method in molecular biology called “recombineering.” (Short for homology-dependent, recombination-mediated, genetic engineering) This is a method whereby phage proteins are used to catalyze homologous recombination. The ramifications are huge. Mutations can be made; whole genes and operons can be knocked out with relative ease, and much more. Extremophiles (organisms able to survive in extreme environments) are a core research element for astrobiologists. Such organisms include biota able to survive kilometers below the ocean's surface near hydrothermal vents and microbes that thrive in highly acidic environments.[33] Characterization of these organisms—their environments and their evolutionary pathways—is considered a crucial component to understanding how life might evolve elsewhere in the universe. Recently, a number of astrobiologists have teamed up with marine biologists and geologists to search for extremophiles and other organisms living around hydrothermal vents on the floors of our own oceans. Scientists hope to use their findings to help them create hypotheses on whether life could potentially exist on certain moo

I just read an article which had my eyebrows up in my hairline and I was shaking my head in incredulity at the….childish, pathetic, scary, ignorant, vindictive, absurd…actions of the British Home Office, then I became very frustrated and angry. The piece is titled, “UK gov bans ‘terror’ suspect from science class” in The Register, written by Lucy Sherrif, an excerpt follows in a moment. Anyone who thinks we live in a just and fair society that gives us freedom and allows us to be innocent until proven guilty, needs to sit down and have a long hard think about why they still think that. I urge such people to seek the truth out. I am writing another post and too annoyed by our government to comment further on this piece at the moment. The UK government are suspicious about a British resident and sus

      Error Bars in Biology
….statistics. The very word strikes fear into the heart of many a biologist (including me). In an article published earlier this year, Cumming and co-workers of La Trobe University, Melbourne gave a very useful rundown of common mistakes made when using statistical error bars in biology and suggested a number of rules that should be adhered to when presenting data in this way, especially in publications. The article provides a quick taster of their advice, which helps to make things seem a little less scary. Two types of error bars are commonly used in biology. Descriptive error bars used to describe a data set and inferential error bars used to determine which conclusions can be justifiably drawn from a data set. These are summarized in the table on the right, which is taken from the paper. (more…)

      History of Cell Biology
The cell theory, or cell doctrine, states that all organisms are composed of similar units of organization, called cells. The concept was formally articulated in 1839 by Schleiden & Schwann and has remained as the foundation of modern biology. The idea predates other great paradigms of biology including Darwin’s theory of evolution (1859), Mendel’s laws of inheritance (1865), and the establishment of comparative biochemistry (1940). Biology: Cell Division
      1. Chromosomes Chromosomes are the structures that provide continuity between one generation of cells and the next. Chromosomes consist of DNA which is wrapped in a protein called histone. Chromosomes become more visible when cells are actually dividing. Chromosomes normally occur in pairs. Memebers of a pair are of the same size and carry genes for the same characteristics at corresponding positions or locii. The members of a pair are called homologous chromosomes. Although therre are the same genes at the same positions, they may represent contrasting traits of the same characteristic. A human cell has 23 homologous pairs. This is a full set of chromosomes called the diploid number. Half the number of chromosomes is known as the haploid number. This occurs inreproductive cells or gametes. It involves reduction division or meiosis in which the number of chromosomes is halved. The halving of the number of chromosomes in meiosis is important so that at fertilisation when

      Biology: Proteins
Proteins are polymers of amino acids. There are many different amino acids but only 20 are common in the proteins. Structure of an Amino Acid There is a central carbon atom(α Carbon) to which is always attached a -COOH group, an -NH2 group and a Hydrogen atom. The fourth position is the only variable part of the molecule, it is known as the R-group(alkyl group) . R can be H, CH3 or C2H5. The simplest amino acid is glycine. The next amino acid is alanine. An amino acid is amphoteric. It exists mainly as ions and can carry both, a positive charge on the basic amino part and a negative charge on the acidic carboxyl part. Such ions are called dipolar and are specifically called zwitterions. The amphoteric nature of amino acids make them act as buffers, an important feature of the blood buffering system. In other words, proteins in blood help to resist pH changes. For instance, when a solution becomes more acidic, this increases the concentration of H+ ions and hence positive charges, a

      Biology: Fats
Lipids are the condensation products between fatty acids and alcohols, usually glycerol. Fatty acids have a long hydrocarbon tail. The latter is largely responsible for the properties of lipids, including water insolubility. Fatty acids may be unsaturated, i.e. contain one or more double bonds, or they may be saturated, lacking double bonds. Glycerol has three -OH groups, as shown: Formation of a lipid e.g.: triglyceride A triglyceride is formed when all 3 -OH groups of glycerol condense, each with one fatty acid. Functions: As triglycerides are non polar, they do not dissolve in water, are hydrophobic. They are less dense than water, and hence floats. One important function of lipids is to act as energy stores. They have higher energy value than carbohydrate, e.g. 1 g of fat yields about 38 kJ on oxidation, while 1 g of carbohydrate yields 17 kJ of energy. Although lipids have C, H and O as carbohydrates, the lipids have a higher proportion of Hydrogen to Oxygen. This is the main r

Recent medical study shows thatLACK OF SLEEPmakes humans emotionally immature! "While we predicted that the emotional centers of the brain would overreact after sleep deprivation, we didn't predict they'd overreact as much as they did," Walker said. "They became more than 60 percent more reactive to negative emotional stimuli. That's a whopping increase—the emotional parts of the brain just seem to run amok.""When we're sleep deprived, it's really as if the brain is reverting to more primitive behavior, regressing in terms of the control humans normally have over their emotions," researcher Matthew Walker, a neuro-scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, told Live-Science. In modern life, people often deprive themselves of sleep "almost on a daily basis," Walker said. "Alarm bells should be ringing about that behavior—no pun intended."feed

      Biology: Carbohydrates
A carbohydrate contains the elements, Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen. Hydrogen and Oxygen occur in the same proportion as in water. General Formula: Cx (H2O)y 1) Monosaccharides General Formula: (CH2O)n n = 3 C3H6O3 – trioses e.g. Glyceraldehyde Phosphate, intermediate product in photosynthesis/glycolysis n = 6 C6H12O6 – hexoses e.g. Glucose, Fructose, Galactose Glucose The structural formula of glucose gives an open chain or ring structure. However because of the bond angles between carbon atoms, hexoses bend and form stable ring structures. In glucose, 1C combines with the oxygen on 5C to give a six sided ring, sometimes known as the pyranose ring. The ring structure is the usual form with only a small proportion of the molecules occurring in the open chain form at any one time. The ring structure is the form used to make disaccharides and polysaccharides. Glucose can exist in two possible ring forms called α-glucose and β-glucose. α-glucose
