So-called "diesel" fuel, derived from third level fractionation of petroleum, was a later invention of Standard Oil et al, after Diesel mysteriously died in transit across the English Channel, from France, on the eve of WWI. "The superior man seeks what is right; the inferior one, what is profitable." — Confucius After talking to a number of people and researching the subject as much as I can, I've decided to begin an experiment with one of our generators and biodiesel. After the upcoming Northallerton Mayfair, I have a few days breathing space. I've chosen one of our smaller Kubota engined generators to be a test bed. A local company produces biodiesel, and I am going to blend a mix and see just how this particular engine takes to it. I think a weak blend would be best to start with, perhaps a B10 (10% biodiesel, 90% mineral diesel). If it performs ok on this then it can be increased until it either reaches the point the engine doesn't run smoothly, or it reaches B100 which is pure biodiesel. There ar

Not so fast. According to a Canadian scientist, quoted in the article: [A]s with most organic materials, oil and glycerin deplete the oxygen content of water very quickly, and that will suffocate fish and other organisms. And for birds, a vegetable oil spill is just as deadly as a crude oil spill. Two of the reasons we bought our VW Jetta TDI (Turbo Diesel Injected) was because of the better gas mileage you get from a diesel and that we could use biodiesel. I thought this was the one to watch to change our gas dependent world! Things started off great. We proudly slapped on that “BIODIESEL” bumper sticker and felt proud every time we filled up. It sometimes cost over three dollars a gallon but we didn’t have to fill up that often. Things have slowly unraveled. I remember the day my biodiesel bubble was busted. McDonalds UK Shows Mother-Nature Love with Biodiesel for its Delivery Vans
In the old days it used to be that you just drove your Nissan Sentra and perhaps its brand new Nissan Sentra parts over to McDonalds to get some of those yummy French fries and Mcburgers. Now can you imagine getting your car fueled in McDonalds? How about a fuel pump sticking out the drive thru window to gas up your car?No? Maybe literally these scenarios are far-fetched, but, to get fuel to power your car from the world-famous food chain’s kitchen isn’t as remote a possibility as you think. In the UK just recently, McDonalds has announced that it will be converting all of its UK delivery vans to run on cooking oil-based biodiesel. This means that aside from getting to enjoy that delicious smell of double cheeseburger‘n’ fries as a delivery truck drives by our British friends can do so rest assured that the truck may be carrying sinful food but it isn’t at least, making the dreadful environmental transgression we call pollution. So how does it work?According to a report by Topge

NYC to Use Solar and Biodiesel Power
The New York City government announced that it is planning to incorporate more alternative energies into its grid. Among these initiatives, mayor Michael Bloomberg said, will be to include solar power and cleaner-burning heating oil in municipal buildings. MSNBC writes The initiatives are part of Bloomberg’s recently announced goal to reduce the city’s carbon emissions total by 30 percent within the next 23 years. To get there, he has been championing an array of new programs, including a multiyear plan to replace the city’s taxis with hybrid vehicles and a scheme to charge drivers fees to enter the most congested parts of Manhattan. They are also making plans to introduce new green legislation. City Councilman David Yassky said Monday he is going to introduce new legislation that would phase in using a biodiesel blend for home heating oil. This new law would introduce a 5 percent biodiesel blend in 2009 with a goal of a 20 percent blend mandated by 2013. [via msnbc]

Austrian firms eye biodiesel businesses in Indonesia
At least three Austrian companies are studying the possibility of becoming involved in the „green energy” business in Indonesia to help boost the development of biodiesel. „Energea, BioDiesel International and the Christof Group are discussing the biodiesel business with a number of leading Indonesian agribusiness companies,” Austrian Commercial Counselor Raymund Gradt was quoted as saying by Tuesday’s English daily The Jakarta Post. „The three Austrian companies could provide the technology to build biodiesel refineries jointly with local firms,” he said. He declined, however, to name their Indonesian counterparts as the two sides had been in discussions for more than a year, but had yet to reach any deals. The three Austrian companies are leading technology solution providers for biodiesel production and currently produce a total of 440,000 tons of biodiesel per annum, more than half of their country’s annual demand of around 700,000-800,000 tons. 800hp biodiesel 65 Chevy Impala on Pimp My Ride..
Last night on a special episode of Pimp My Ride, viewers and fans saw a 1965 Chevrolet Impala SS go from a normal classic into a custom 800hp Biodiesel street car as part of MTV's Break the Addiction program. This was on the first cars in a while that I liked on this show, so much so that I would want something like it as my daily driver or classic. I like the concept, the technology, the look, the entire package and the fact that this impala can go 0 to 60 in around 3.5 seconds, plus get 25 mpg to boot (according to the show). All I can say is, you will see more cars like this either with Biodiesel, Natural gas, ethanol, a hybrid and etc. and that's cool.Gallery from GAS - Galpin Auto Sports: Articles on this subject..- Autobloggreen- MTV ThinkmtvSee Yeah!

Chinese company set to export biodiesel to Houston
A Chinese chemical company located in Jakarta, Indonesia, reportedly will begin exporting 100,000 tons of biodiesel a year to an unnamed Houston buyer next month. It apparently will be the first foreign biodiesel to be shipped to the United States. The company, PT Sumi Asih OleoChemical, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of stearic acids and glycerine from palm and coconut oils. A year ago the company began producing biodiesel from palm oil feedstock at a rate of 3,000 tons a month. The company has built a new production facility that will increase its production capacity to 8,200 tons a month to meet the terms of the contract with the Houston buyer, the company's president, Alexius Darmadi, told an Asian publication this week.

Will biodiesel be the solution to Maui's energy needs?
Photo: Charles PfeilThe front page article on the February 18th Sunday Maui News couldn't be missed because of the giant headline which read, "$61 million project a start to ending use of petroleum". With our ridiculously high gas prices on Maui, who wouldn't be reading this announcement?! This new project scheduled to begin in 2009, a collaboration between Hawaiian Electric Co. and BlueEarth Biofuels LLC, has impressive intentions: "While MECO President Ed Reinhardt said the goal is to get all of the company's Maalaea generators off petroleum, Mayor Charmaine Tavares noted her call at her inauguration to diversify the county's economy."The BlueEarth plan is to burn imported palm oil, but there are other potential crops which could be used for fuel: jatropha trees, kukui, algae, flax, castor beans, jojoba, soybeans, rapeseed, sunflower seeds, and coconut. Pacific Biodiesel has been refining alternative fuel on Maui for many years, and in another article in the Maui News, Kelly Ki

      Biodiesel Production Producing Pollution

Yes, well, Bruce P. Hollebone, researcher with Environment Canada, says the result is some bad shit for birds and fish. "As with most organic materials, oil and glycerin deplete the oxygen content of water very quickly, and that will suffocate fish and other organisms. And for birds, a vegetable oil spill is just as deadly as a crude oil spill.”  The problem is, of course, money. "Glycerin, an alcohol that is normally nontoxic, can be sold for secondary uses, but it must be

One of the most promising of these new, non-food-based fuels comes from algae, which scientists have been breeding and researching since the Carter Administration. The March cover story at Green Fuels Forecast tells of the National Renewable Energy Labs Aquatic Species Program (ASP), which has been looking for biodiesel-producing algae since 1978, and is now providing the backbone of technology for some frenzied venture capital activity. When the program started, it was estimated that all of America's transportation and home-heating needs could be met by 15k square miles of algae farms. Of
