      Bipolar Biochemistry or Behavior?
I found our recent discussion on irritability to be very interesting, and I appreciate everyone's input. Marja brought up a topic that I'd like to pursue further. I think that one of the greatest problems in being diagnosed as a BIP (bipolar person) is if we start believing that every symptom we have and every behavior pattern we engage in is biochemical in nature. There is truly no proof--as

      Computational Biochemistry and Biophysics
Edited by Oren M. Becker, Alexander D. MacKerell, Jr., Benoit Roux & Masakatsu Watanabe (Marcel Dekker) "In recent years the significant increase in computer power along with the implementation of a wide range of theoretical methods into sophisticated simulation programs have greatly expanded the applicability of computational approaches to biological systems. The expansion is such that interesting applications to important and complex biomolecular systems are now often carried out by researchers with no special training in computational methodologies. To successfully apply computational approaches to their systems of interest, these ‘‘nonspecialists’’ must make several important choices about the proper methods and techniques for the particular question that they are trying to address. We believe that a good understanding of the theory behind the myriad of computational methods and techniques can help in this process. Therefore, one of this book’s aims is to provide readers

Karnataka PGET 2007 Biochemistry MCQ Answer 01
The correct answer is BAn essential amino acid or indispensable amino acid, is an amino acid that cannot be synthesized de novo by the organism (usually referring to humans), and therefore must be supplied in the diet.Nutritional essentiality is characteristic of the species, not the nutrient. Nine amino acids are generally regarded as essential for humans. They are: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. In addition, the amino acids arginine, cysteine, glycine and tyrosine are considered conditionally essential, meaning they are not normally required in the diet, but must be supplied exogenously to specific populations that do not synthesize it in adequate amounts.Tags: MCQ, Biochemistry, Essential Amino Acids

The correct answer is BFATTY ACID BREAKDOWNOverviewFatty acid breakdown(also called 8一oxidation)brings about the oxidation oflong-chain fatty acids with the production of energy in the form of ATP The fatty acids are converted into their acyt CoA derivatives and then metabolized by the removal of two-carbon acetyl CoA units from the end of the acyl chain Activation Fatty acid breakdown occurs in the cytosol of prokaryotes and in themitochondrial matrix of eukaryotes The fatty acid is activated by forming a thioester link with CoA before entering the mitochondriaTransport into mitochondriaThe inner mitochondriat membrane is not permeable to long—chain acyl CoAderivatives and, so these are transported into the mitochondria as carnitinederivatives by carnitine/acyl carnitine translocase.Tags: MCQ, Biochemistry, Fatty Acid Breakdown

Karnataka PGET 2007 Biochemistry MCQ Answer 04
The correct answer is BIncreasing evidence is highlighting the role antioxidants may have in protecting against certain conditions such as heart disease, stroke and cancers. It has been proposed that the mechanisms leading to these diseases may be promoted by free radicals and that antioxidants may oppose the action of these molecules. In addition to the well known antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E, there is growing research demonstrating the potentially beneficial effects of plant-derived antioxidants, polyphenols, found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, cereals and drinks such as tea and red wine.Tags: MCQ, Biochemistry, Anti-oxidants

Karnataka PGET 2007 Biochemistry MCQ Answer 05
The correct answer is BThe requirement of rats and humans for the essential amino acids phenylalanine and methionine is substantially reduced if tyrosine, which is formed from phenylalanine, or cysteine, which is formed from methionine, is added to the diet.Cysteine is a nonessential amino acid, which means that it is manufactured from other amino acids in the liver; it does not have to be obtained directly through the diet. It is synthesized in the liver from methionine.Cysteine is not only an essential constituent of proteins, but it also lies in the major route of incorporation into all organic sulfur compounds in the body. Cysteine is formed from methionine and serine. Methionine is converted to S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) and on to homocysteine. Homocysteine then reacts with serine under the influence of the enzyme cystathionine beta-synthetase. This series of steps requires adequate levels of vitamin B-12, vi
