The nomination of Sarah Palin as VP has certainly made this election season more interesting. The weirdest part, I think, is how she seems to match up with the criticisms McCain and the right have been making of Obama.
First, McCain criticized Obama for being inexperienced, and specifically for lacking foreign policy experience. Now, McCain’s running [...]

How do we know what other people are thinking? How do we judge them, and what happens in our brains when we do? MIT neuroscientist Rebecca Saxe is tackling those tough questions and many others. Her goal is no less than understanding how the brain gives rise to the abilities that make us uniquely human--making moral judgments, developing belief systems and understanding language. by Antonio ThorntonOur beliefs are the foundation of who we are, what we think, what we say, how we act, and ultimately, how the world shows up for us. However, when we have limiting beliefs, we actually limit our life.RelationshipsLimiting beliefs will greatly affect your relationships. It can cause problems if you have any beliefs about what can or cannot, should or should not happen in a relationship. For example: You believe that the person you're dating should not see an ex-girlfriend or boyfriend because it's "bad" for the relationship. What you don't see is that the person you're with really cares about you. The relationship they maintain with an ex can be for multiple reasons. Are there children involved? Does your significant other pay alimony to their ex? Was the break up mutual?
1.I don't trust myself to choose the RIGHT business or career. The fear of making the wrong choice can freeze you into inaction. So often we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to have THIS career choice be the perfect one. Give yourself a break! If you are following your heart and your passions this career choice, even if it is not the "perfect" one, will put you on the path to a career you love.2.I don't know enough."If I only knew more I would be ready to move to that next career or start my own business." It is easy to spend the rest of our lives researching, learning and NOT doing. Do you want to know how to learn the fastest? Learn in action! It's not always pretty but it gets the job done. You will never know enough until you jump into that new career or business.3.I can't make enough
Do we believe that money is evil and wrong? Money is neither. It is a commodity on earth, a necessity. It is what people need to purchase many of their basic needs, as well as luxuries and treats; it is one way they are rewarded for their work. Nobody is suggesting that all religious people are violent, intolerant, racist, bigoted, contemptuous of women and so on. It would be absurd to suggest such a thing: just as absurd as to generalize about all atheists. I am not even concerned with statistical generalizations about the majority of religious people (or atheists). My concern here is over whether there is any general reason why religion might be more or less likely to bias individuals towards all those unpleasant things in Christopher Hitchens's list: to make them more likely to exhibit them than they would have been without religion. I think the answer is yes.
Religion changes, for people, the definition of good. Atheists and humanists tend to define good and bad deeds in terms of the welfare and suffering of others. Murder, torture, and cruelty are bad because they cause people to suffer. Most religious people think them bad, too, but some religions (for example the religion of the Taliban) sanction all of them under so
Standing before a crowd of several hundred and a television audience of millions, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said that in a nation with religious freedom, his Mormon faith should not be the sole reason keeping him from the presidency.Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, addressed the public's concerns with his faith in what political observers labeled the most important speech of his political career on Thursday at the George Bush Presidential Library. With many family members and former President George H.W. Bush present, Romney said the public should question the faith of its leaders in a religious nation, but it should not be the only factor when electing them."Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom," Romney said. "Freedom opens the windows of the soul so that man can discover his most profound beliefs and commune with God. Freedom and religious endure together, or perish alone."As the first Mormon running for president, many in the p

Ron Paul’s supporters (and it was his supporters more than the official campaign) raised over four million dollars yesterday in an internet fund raising effort. In general Paul’s supporters, by their violations of the “netiquette” which allows for the wide open internet to operate as freely and effectively as it does, often do their candidate more harm than good. Hopefully this will help encourage his supporters to devote their efforts to such positive endeavors as opposed to their spamming which only creates ill will towards their cause.
As with almost everything involving the Paul candidacy, there are two sides to this fund raiser. While they raised less than half of their goal, which is a reflection of both the depth of support of his followers and their exaggerated sense of their numbers, this remains an impressive achievement. There has been some criticism for the tie in to Guy Fawkes Day, but I see this as far more a matter of appealing to a more symbolic

Is it ever possible to prove that religious are not hallucinations or delusions? Thus, if it cannot be proven, said religious experiences mean nothing, no matter how many one has.
The German philosopher Immanuel Kant has demolished the notion that it is possible to prove things about the nature of reality, including claims about the existence of supernatural entities, based purely on logical arguments; only perception can give us knowledge about the world.
As there is no empirical evidence for the existence of God, it is impossible to prove the existence of God. It is something that is based on blind faith or claimed religious experiences, and as far as I know, most theists justify their belief on their emotional experiences.

The popular beliefs about, but not of, the mountain people in Arkansas and other Southern States contain many misconceptions. According to fiction, the hillman is a seven-foot combination of malnutrition and hookworm, asleep on his front porch with the dogs. His great bare feet, dangling off the porch, flap from time to time when the flies get too pesky, but nothing awakens him except a hound's salute to a stranger. Then he shoots up his astounding neck to its full length, ogles the visitor, and on his hunting horn blows a series of long and short blasts that means, "Hide yore stills and oil yore guns; they air a stranger h'yar." This feat of mountain Morse is all the more remarkable because he can neither read nor write, and, indeed, cannot count well enough to enumerate his hogs, but must identify them by name. Should one be missing for a day or two, he musters all his kin down to second cousins and step-uncles and goes across the "mounting" for a feud. While the menfolks shoot out

I read somewhere that all of us have a set of underlying assumptions based on which we create a model of the world. This model involves all aspects of life, but I will restrict myself of investing.I am aware of a few assumptions on which my investing style or philosophy is based. These assumptions are not universal truths or applicable to others. Its just that I have developed these assumptions over a period of time. Some may be valid and some not. I constantly test these assumptions against my performance and try to discard those that work against my long term performance. So here goes my list1. Value investing is an extremely productive approach to investing for my circumstance. I have a regular job, a family and can devote only a limited time to investing. So for me value investing and an as an extension, buy and hold makes sense.2. Trading is time consuming, too stressful and not a game in which I can or want to excel. In addition, I have a mental block against trading (which must q
By : Gordon BryanWant to unlock your potential? Want to move forward to success? Well neither of these will happen in a month of Sundays without belief.I always harp on about attitude being the magic word, and belief is one attitude you MUST have. Not only that, but there are TWO types of beliefs needed! The first is belief that it will happen.Whatever your goal is, however you want to improve your life, whatever wealth you want, in order for any of it to come true, you need to believe that it *will* happen. You need to know this for a fact, not just some wishy-washy hope that it would be nice, but know for a fact that it can and will happen to YOU.The second belief is in yourself as a person, and your right to succeed and enjoy abundance.Abundance is all around, but most people do not tap into it, they don't grab their fair share, because they just don't believe. They either feel they are undeserving of the good things, or they believe that something or someone will wreck their plans.Ca

In my life I have the joy and pleasure of helping others to achieve their goals and ambitions. I regularly get calls from people who have attended one of my seminars or who have bought one of my products telling me that they have doubled or trebled their sales. Whilst this is personally gratifying I have long wondered what it is that actually changes for these individuals that propels them to get these phenomenal results…
As many of my seminars are purely mindset / motivation based it’s often not the skills (important as they are) , it’s usuall some element of mindset, but what?
What is that empowers some individuals to walk out and double their sales virtually over night?
My opinion is that people who get instantaneous results are the ones who manage to locate and destroy sales loser beliefs that are holding them back from what they want to achieve. This 10-step exercise will help you to find and remove any limiting beliefs that are stopping you from achie
Many levelheaded, rational, natural-health consumers are baffled by the seemingly unending ignorance of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the industry it serves.
It would seem as though the promoters of modern medicine, and the FDA decision makers, live in a world that is not of this world—a world that operates from a different set of beliefs and biological laws.
This Newstarget article spells out these "other-worldly" beliefs that are the bedrock of modern medicine and the FDA, including:
Nature cannot be trusted, and scientific progress is measured by the degree to which man dominates nature.
Vitamins and dietary supplements are both useless and dangerous, and they interfere with the action of pharmaceuticals.
Allowing the public to have access to information about dietary supplements is dangerous; as people may be fooled into thinking they don't need medical intervention.

One of the things I love about marketing terms is how their elusive nature allows for open interpretation and individual definitions.
In my brain, branding is the art and science of forming an impression. The success of your brand is determined by how closely your customer’s experience meets (or exceeds!) their expectations.
Here’s what some of the blogosphere’s top bloggers have to say about branding:
Toby Bloomberg of Diva Marketing Blog: “The reason people belong to brands is similar to why people join a cult.”
Paul McEnany from Hee-Haw Marketing: “branding still has a job of not just pushing things to push them, but when they need to be pushed, and then pushing them in the right direction”
Russell Davies: “Branding is no longer the future of business…Not everything is a brand…Branding is being replaced by design/technology as the future of business.”
Seth Godin: “The key word, I think, is spiritual. Mythologi

In a recent peer group meeting, we had some discussion about sales targets. One person had gone through some upcoming goals for the next month. I asked, "What about sales goals?" He had some annual budgets for his sales targets for new accounts to bring in. That part was very good, better than what most people do. But nothing was translated down to a monthly target.
I suggested that he ought to put down a target for the month of how many accounts he would expect to land. Another member of the group followed up. He mentioned that he has targets and that he believes that he will achieve them.
That led to some discussion. First person asked, "You mean, I’m just supposed to put down this number for my target and expect that it will happen?"
I responded, "That’s right. You expect that it will happen and you draw forces towards you to help make it happen. Your belief gets reflected in how you carry yourself. You’re expecting to reach your sales target, so you’re expecting to reach a

I haven't written one of these in a while, but today I thought I'd write about a belief that's a major component of my worldview. If you've read much of anything I've posted here, you know I don't believe in the existence of a god. I won't go into the reasons why here, but I do not see a grand plan in the universe. However, contrary to what many theists believe about atheism, that does not mean I think that life is pointless. I do not believe we are all doomed to suffer meaningless lives just because there is no paternal figure in the sky watching after us. Instead, I feel we can and should make our own purpose in life.Obviously, this is an entirely relativist position, which means that different people will come up with wildly different meanings for their lives, for better or worse. While this may not sit well with many people, to make claims against the reality of relativism is to deny the ample evidence of human history. Certainly, the Nazis did terrible things because
Do you remember being a kid and wanting something more than anything else in the world? You’d lay in bed at night and dream about it. You’d imagine yourself having it and you’d be filled with excitement.
There were so many things I wanted as a little kid. I’d let my imagination go wild and I’d dream really big - no limitations.
I watched the movie Star Wars about five times when I was 6 years old. I dreamed of galaxies far, far away. I wanted to be like Princess Leia and save whole civilizations. I wanted a light saber so I could fight the “good” fight. I also would listen to songs on my plastic record player over and over again as I dreamed of being a famous musician one day. Just before falling asleep, I’d spontaneously write songs and sing them unabashedly to myself in the dark. I was happy, carefree, and not afraid. I was excited by my dreams.
As I grew older, I started to listen more to the adults around me. Since they were bigger, I

It will be a terrific learning tool for me and for them.I also tweaked the OTO for the web site so we could finish it and get it off our plates. It's time to move on to other paying gigs. After those tasks I spent some time reading about negotiating because I know so little. I don't do it consistently but I have done it in the past. I've negotiated for better paying gigs, for the price I determined for my car and on other smaller scales.Part of that negotiation entailed figuring out exactly what I need and exactly what I want. Right now my need is a different pay rate/salary than my need. This morning I met with a Paychex rep so I could better educate myself as far as taxes, fees, etc. I also emailed my CPA to make sure my salary was what the IRS would consider "reasonable".Our email exchange (
Inside each of us is a Giant. A giant who has the power, the ability, the authority and the belief to create anything we choose in our lives. But, not everyone has found the giant or even realized that it is there. Why are so many people simply settling for what life has dished out, zombies going from day to day, giving up control to others and just accepting what they get? When you realize the power within, you will never just accept where you are. With this power, you do not buy into the limiting belief of playing life small, a symptom of the limiting beliefs you are harboring inside. Allowing your limiting beliefs to control your outcome in life, totally controlling what you do, who you are and what you have in life. We have all been taught from a very young age that our lives are limited to what we are given, that based on luck, education or whatever might limit people from stepping up and playing big. Life and what you get out of life has nothing to do with any of these th
A friend of mine was telling me about what happened to her Sunday night in her own home. She said someone broke into her home and robbed everything while she lay frozen in her bed cause she was too scared to move. I told her she was very lucky that they did not do anything to harm her, and asked her what she dreaded most about the situation. She is 54 years old, and she said while she sat in the bed she thought they were going to kill her, it made her realize that she had not really done everything she really wanted to. She always made some kind of excuse, like she couldn't afford too or she just couldn't and she would come up with some kind of excuse. What I learned from her experience is that we are not promised tomorrow, and if you really desire to do something then you have to find a way to do it. If you do not chances are you will regret that you didn't do it.People always make some kind of excuse when I speak to people they always act like they are promised tomorrow. They know w

These eight myths may be preventing most people from living their dreams and the "Sovereign Life".Myth Number OneThe Myth of External Authority -There is no absolute authority over your life. You have to design your life and your affairs in such a way that you control your own destiny.Myth Number Two The Myth of Education - Most people cannot be taught any particular course of study. People only can learn, and only learn if and when they have the interest and desir
"I am not sure if God exists or not. These things cannot be proven and will always be a matter of faith, whether or not I believe in a higher power. I used to. But, I lost my faith in a god, because to me, it did not make sense in light of the fact [...]
I've chosen the Nicene Creed to represent the core beliefs you'll encounter here. The Nicene Creed of 325 AD is a concise summary of universally held orthodox Chrisitan beliefs. Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Anglicans, and Protestants should all find common ground in this creed. If you subscribe to the authentic and ancient Christian faith you'll find you agree with with this statement of faith. From this starting point the dialog and sharing can begin! What if you're a seeker, a doubter, or just plain confused? Hang in there, in the coming weeks and months many ideas and issues will be presented to help you seek and find, overcome doubts, and bring into focus your own beliefs.Recently, The Da Vinci Code has brought the Nicene Creed to the forefront of popular culture. It's been taken off t

Christians seem to think that their religious beliefs deserve respect, even from persons who do not share them. "You don't have to believe what I do," they say, "but you should at least respect my beliefs." Why? I happen to think that I can defend your right to believe as you wish without having even a trace of respect for what you believe. Moreover, I can respect you as a person without respecting your religious beliefs. The truly interesting thing is that many religious moderates, freethinkers, and atheists share this viewpoint that religious beliefs should be respected. In other words, many non-Christians would agree that it is okay for me not to share your beliefs as long as I still respect them. Whether this perspective comes from politeness, a desire to avoid conflict, a fear of retribution, or some other source, it remains a powerful factor maintaining religious belief. It erects a force field around religion, preventing meaningful criticism from entering. The question that needs
Vjack at Athiest Revolution just came up with a great idea, and I'm extremely jealous I did not think of it earlier. On his post "What Do You Believe?" Vjack correctly points out that, unlike religion, atheism has no distinct set of beliefs apart from our views on the nonexistence of gods:As we consider this question, one critical disclaimer must be offered at the outset. Because atheism has no doctrine, set of core values, or even shared vision of the world, no honest atheist will have much to say about how his/her fellow atheists think. Since atheism implies nothing besides a lack of theistic belief, one must expect tremendous diversity among atheists. I have met atheists who believe in ghosts and others who do not. All they necessarily share is that they do not believe in gods. This may be difficult for some Christians to grasp because they do have at least some shared doctrine. Those of us who think it is important to provide believers with an alternative worldview are going to n
I believe that science is the greatest tool we have for understanding the world around us and is our only hope for making the world the better place we want it to be. However, that doesn't mean I worship science. It is not meant to provide a person with a basis for morality or to codify how one should live his or her life (I'll address that in another post). Instead, it's more like a tool whose purpose is to gain knowledge of the universe around us through observable and testable evidence. By itself, that might not seem like much, but it's what we do with that knowledge that can make all the difference. For example, just two centuries ago we never would have suspected the existence of asteroids, much less the threat they pose to our survival. If one had appeared over the Earth at any point in our history except for the last couple of decades, we would have been powerless to stop it. Today, we not only recognize how dangerous they can be, but we are also coming up with
In an amazing display of ignorance, Texas State Representative Warren Chisum passed around a memo from Georgia State representative Ben Bridges aruging that modern science is nothing more than the religious beliefs of Kabbalah, an ancient Jewish sect. From the Dallas Morning News: Mr. Bridges' memo claims that teaching evolution amounts to indoctrinating students in an ancient Jewish sect's beliefs. "Indisputable evidence - long hidden but now available to everyone - demonstrates conclusively that so-called 'secular evolution science' is the Big Bang, 15-billion-year, alternate 'creation scenario' of the Pharisee Religion," writes Mr. Bridges, a Republican from Cleveland, Ga. He has argued against teaching of evolution in Georgia schools for several years. He then refers to a Web site, www.fixedearth.com, that contains a model bill for state Legislatures to pass to attack instruction on evolution as an unconstitutional establishment of religion. Mr.
Limiting Beliefs - The Greatest Enemy of Success: "Inside each of us is a Giant. "
Wicca is a nature and magic based religion that is taken from the Pagan practices of ancient times. Wicca mimics other world religions with its own rituals, seasonal “holidays” and belief system. The beliefs of the religion can vary by region, since there is no orthodox method of practice or central organization. There are, however, [...]
