      FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT BANANAS!
The banana is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. It is mentioned in the Buddhist Pali text (600 BC) and in the Indian national epic poems (Mahabharata and Ramayana). The first direct commercial shipment of 20,000 bunches of bananas arrived in the UK in September 1888.The banana plant is not a tree – it is the world’s largest herb. The trunk of the banana plant is made from wood. It is created from thick leaf stems wrapped tightly together in overlapping layers. Each plant only bears one single stem of bananas with anything from 100-2000 individual fruit on it.During the war, bananas could not be imported into the UK and people in Britain did not see a banana for eight years. One wartime song, from 1943, went: “I get along without sugar; I never drink any tea; Eggs and bacon, beef and ham – these things don’t worry me; But one thing I always crave, and that’s why you hear me sing: Oh, when can I have a banana again?”The first bananas after the war arrived ion Go

An Organic Recipe Your Kids Will Go Bananas For
Hey everyone, I know you’ve probably heard all about why you should go organic, but maybe you never thought of it as a great way to provide the healthiest food for your child. Organic fruits and vegetables are free from pesticides or fertilizers—products that are potentially harmful to our bodies. Organic animal products mean that the animals were raised without antibiotics and growth hormones—chemicals that are unhealthy for both the animal and the consumer. Going organic is healthy for farmers, healthy for plants, healthy for animals, and healthy for your family. You can start introducing organic foods to your family gradually, and a great snack to start with is the banana push-up. Has The Sci Fi Catholic gone bananas?D.G.D.: It began when a guy calling himself Che' Lovell decided to write his own version of The Grapes of Wrath, entitled The Bananas of Revenge, a play in two acts. It continued when he challenged me and EegahInc of The B-Movie Catechism to review it. Well, EegahInc wrote a clever and hilarious review, though he doesn't seem to understand what the play is about: I mean, it's supposed to be The Grapes of Wrath and he treats it as if it's supposed to be Attack of the Fifty-foot Banana. Oh, he also has a cool photograph accompanying his review, so I figured I better get one of those, too. Here's what I got:Yeah. Pretty sad, huh? The other day, the man who may or may not be named Che' Lovell challenged me to review his play, The Bananas of Revenge. Just to confuse everybody, Act I of the play is posted here, and Act II is posted over here. I recommend reading the whole play (it's not very long) before continuing here. Also, Eegahinc of The B-Movie Catechism has already reviewed the play. Because Che' uses real movie stars for all his characters, this is probably more up Eegahinc's alley than it is up mine. Eegahinc is rattling off filmographies while I'm asking, "Who the heck is Sean Penn?" Che''s pop culture references aren't quite fringe enough for me.For that reason, I have recasted Che''s script so I can be more comfortable with it. Here is the new cast with its equivalency to the old cast:John Travolta is now Charles StrossTom Cruise is now John C. It appears that their EcoChurch Director Che' Lovell (or perhaps his evil doppelganger) is currently scripting a play with the hopes of getting it produced on the stage, or maybe even someday as a movie. (You never know, I hear the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos is always on the lookout for fresh talent.) And it appears the SOViers were hoping to convince me into reviewing the work in progress.Of course, I tried to explain that The B-Movie Catechism is a film-centric blog, but they started going on about the suppression of the freedom of self expression and my being a slave to th

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s …. a giant BANANA, floating 30 to 50 kilometres above Texas, where it will stay for about a month. Why is the artist doing it? A few reasons, and one of them is: This is a daring action, defiant like a cowboy act. And the banana is macho and phallic, they say. It is in Texas because it has oil, and a lot of Walmarts, Exxons and Halliburtons. (and The Ranch) Interesting! Monkeys have gone into space and now a giant banana up in the sky!

Wanna Quit Smoking?? Or have a Hangover?? Try 2 Bananas a Day
The yellow-skinned fruit that can easily make you "slip" is perhaps the most under-valued of all fruits. We all know it can help in weight control, is rich in potassium and is delicious to eat. But did you know that it can help you quit smoking too?? Here's a brief write-up on the less-known medicinal properties of this fruit which I'm sure would help you some way in your life.Smoking: Bananas can help people trying to give up smoking, as the high levels of Vitamin C, A1, B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal. Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalise the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water-balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack. Why Condoms and Kids made me Bananas
***Updated below*** Yesterday, after showering and waddling naked through my house, wrapped so tightly in a towel I resembled a sushi roll, I looked at my suitcase and schwag bags lying on the floor, taunting my lazy ass to unpack and put things away. I could just hear them dare me to leave them on the floor to become permanent parts of the decor. Do it, do it, they whispered. Not one to succumb to peer pressure (snort), even the pressure created in my mind from two inanimate objects, I took a deep breath and dumped the contents of the bags on to the top of my comforter. There! Take that! I thought. This way, I would have to go through my dirty laundry and schwag and put things away. It was on my bed. My precious, soft bed. I had no choice now. One would think that I would have immediately started putting things away, right? Nah. I was standing there, wrapped in my towel, and let’s face it, it was starting to get a little drafty. As the true blonde I am, I found myself distracte

Bananas, Coke cans and now electricity
Ray Comfort just doesn’t know when to quit. He’s tried to prove the existence of his god with a banana, brought up a coke can during a debate with the Rational Response squad and in a soon to be published book titled “The Atheist Delusion” he’s comparing disbelief in the existence of his god to disbelief in electricity. There were once three men who considered that they were very wise. They lived in a country that had only just been introduced to electricity. One dark night, the men were invited by Edison Electric to see a demonstration of electrical power, because it was well-known that the three of them were skeptics when it came to electricity being a reality. The reason they denied its existence was because they didn’t believe in anything that could not be seen. These men were rationalists, and electricity was said to be invisible1. They refused to believe in something that couldn’t be scientifically demonstrated. When they entered the dim

      Bananas and Bowling
These bananas finally ripened and made quite a few loafs of banana bread. The kids have been enjoying fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden. They have been picking at least 10 cucumbers a day. These they either love to eat fresh or as a cucumber salad with sour cream....that is until I told them what sour cream is. Now suddenly they are grossed out by it. That's kids for you.The kids had their bowling league awards ceremony today. They all came home with pins and Asia received a trophy as the most improved player. They are all very proud of themselves and I'm proud of them too.

Will it blend? Berries, bananas, yogurt, and...
Not so fast. You're going to have to read on to find out...If you're heading over to teach English in Seoul, you're gonna miss a few things from back home. Some people miss the chocolate selection. Some miss the junk food selection (although Seoul has more than enough convenience stores to fill the void). Some miss clean air that involves living on the westcoast of Canada (there's nothing wrong with yellow dust--actually, who am I kidding the stuff hurts your throat, eyes and mouth). What do I miss? I miss the fruit and vegetable selection at a decent price. The price of fruits and vegetables here can be outrageous ($6US for one pear, $2US for one kiwi) compared to the prices we're used to back home. The selection can also be an issue as well. However, we've always tried to make the best of it. Golden kiwis from Costco. Apples, frozen durian, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, and pineapple from Homever. Grapes, strawberries, and oranges from the farmer's truck on the side of the road

String Of Bananas (Green Thumb Sunday)
A couple of weeks back I picked up two String of Bananas plants at Home Depot greenhouse here in Chicago. I already owned String of Pearls (Senecio Radicans) and have been wanting to add this plant to my cacti and succulent collection. Since I've owned my String of Pearls it has flowered twice for me and I didn't know until the flower had died. Today I went into check on the new plants and saw that my String of Bananas was flowering. I quickly remembered that the flowers were suppose to be fragrant so I picked it up and sure it enough they smelled like cinnamon. I spent a good five minutes just inhaling the wonderful aroma from this flower and tried to snap a few pictures. Unfortunately we're back to winter here in Chicago and there's a lot of cold but very little natural sunlight and only managed to get one photo of this flower that I thought was usable for my gardening blog. This is my first time participating in Green Thumb Sunday and I couldn't wait for it to actually be Sunda

      The real cost of bananas
Dole (Standard Fruit Co.) and Chiquita Brands (formerly United Brands, formerly United Fruit) have a 100-year long history of contaminating land and water, suppressing unions, bribing government officials, exposing and even knowingly spraying workers with carcinogenic pesticides, and violating even the meager worker protection laws that Central American countries have.Workers' lives in the banana republic, which referred to an interesting story called Life in the banana republic written in Ireland, sparked so many comments that I thought you might be interested in some other articles and studies done about the real cost of bananas. I've included some quotes from each of the articles below each link. The Price of Bananas: The Banana Industry in Costa RicaEcosystems have been destroyed on an ongoing basis, and the rights of workers and indigenous minorities are regularly violated.Big banana companies own the land:Over time, the existence of this huge monoculture -- supported by large c

Corporate Responsibility Monday: Going Ethically Bananas
Corporate Responsibility Mondays continues with a look into the fruit industry, and my personal favorite, Bananas. For those new to the Corporate Responsibility Mondays, my goal is basically to highlight a company in the industry that is being corporately responsible. My co-blogger, Josh, will be highlighting a company with a poor and sketchy history. This week we will be talking about bananas. My hope is that each of these posts causes you to seriously consider your purchasing choices. I’ll be honest this will be the toughest one for me, because I love bananas, but if there is an option, I feel pretty compelled to take it. Today will be a brief lesson in corporate identity stuck into the middle of our banana conversation. The logo above is one you might recognize if you’ve ever looked for ethical coffee or tea. The first thing we need to clear up is that the logo above is for a Trademarked corporation, it is not the exclusive label for fair trade items. This means it

Cooking with Tropical Fruit - Why Not Go Bananas?
From recipes for fried bananas, to banana sandwiches, banana pies, fruit salads and more, there are great types of different tropical food combos that are perfect with the sweetness of a delicious banana. Bananas are picked after once they have matured, but while they are still green. However, before eating, bananas should be completely ripened. Banana fruit baskets would make a great gift for any culinary enthusiast who loves to cook with tropical fruit. The fact of the matter is the downfall, as well as the blessing, of the nature of banana trees. These trees produce fruits that ripen all at the same time. Therefore, you send them to be sold, dispersed and used, or they rot and are wasted to mush or are food for hungry insects. An over-sized banana is likely a plantain. A plantain is a part of the banana family, however, they are much less sweet and are used for other purposes. For example: plantains are often used in recipes for other cultures.Bananas are great for cooking. They tast
