Computers as Authors? The Digital Revolution Continues
It seems that the 21st Century Digital Revolution, as it may someday be called, is getting bigger and bigger with each passing month. As is well known, financial losses faced by the movie industry and the music industry are increasing monthly as bootlegs made possible by digital versions proliferate. New digital models that could not have been predicted a decade ago are supplanting traditional business models so quickly that both of these industries are in very real danger of collapsing altogether. Now, however, another, more unlikely victim may be added to the list: The publishing industry. The New York Times recently ran a story profiling Philip Parker, an entrepreneur who has invented a way for books to be written by a computer algorithm. Or, rather, a way for books to be "compiled".

Write about something you care about.Whether you are writing fiction or non fiction, it is imperative you write about something you care about. The successful authors have some emotional connection to their content or story. If you are writing fiction, then write

      X-Factor for authors anyone?
The Times, the UK's newspaper of record (at least that's what Wikipedia calls it), published an article on Friday, Jeanette Winterson on the cult of personality, to which I responded. I have a lot of time for Winterson. I don't always get her writing but I enjoy not getting it. It's a good article, as you would expect, well-written and humorous and worth a read, as is the response I posted yesterday but which only went online today. You can read both here.

      Conservative Authors Sue Publisher
Five authors have sued the parent company of Regnery Publishing, a Washington imprint of conservative books, charging that the company deprives its writers of royalties by selling their books at a steep discount to book clubs and other organizations owned by the same parent company. In a suit filed in United States District Court in Washington yesterday, the authors Jerome R. Corsi, Bill Gertz, Lt. Col. Robert (Buzz) Patterson, Joel Mowbray and Richard Miniter state that Eagle Publishing, which owns Regnery, “orchestrates and participates in a fraudulent, deceptively concealed and self-dealing scheme to divert book sales away from retail outlets and to wholly owned subsidiary organizations within the Eagle conglomerate.” More information Share This

What I've Learned From Self-Published Authors
by Lynn EmeryAlmost eleven years ago I sold my first novel to a traditional New York publisher. I was so green I hadn't even thought of self-publishing, barely knew anything about it. I joined the local RWA (Romance Writers of America) chapter and started to learn about the publishing industry. I confess that I didn't pay much attention to things like marketing, contracts, etc. I was just trying to get out of the "talking about being a writer" stage and across the "I've started my book" threshold. So most of my attention was on basic how-to information. I started writing my first book. Looking back I laugh at how blissfully ignorant I was then. I didn't think about how few African-American fiction novels were in bookstores or that genre novels with black characters were practically non-existent. Nor did I know what Sandra Kitt, Donna Hill and other black romance writers had gone up against trying to get published. Good thing because I might have given up. I wouldn't h

One of my favourite authors gets stuffed!
I love Eric Carle’s books. I read all of them in my classroom and at home on a very regular basis, so I was excited to hear that Kids Preferred was making plush stuffies of many of his best characters. Pictured here you’ll find “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and “The Very Grouchy Ladybug,” the main characters from two of my personal favourite Eric Carle stories. Also available are Cuddly Brown Bear in mother and baby versions from “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You Hear?” a Butterfly pullstring musical toy from “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”, a Lion hand puppet from “1,2,3, to the Zoo” (incidentally my 18 month old son’s current favourite book which he sleeps with and drags everywhere) and a Panda Bear bean bag plush from “Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?” I took a caterpillar into my classroom and simply sat him on the bookshelf. As the children walked in to the room several of them

Thoughts on Authors, Synthesizers, and Consumers in the Geospatial Landscape
After revisiting some posts/articles about users as authors, synthesizers, and consumers and the hierarchical structure of ‘Web 2.0′ users, I’ve been trying to wrap my mind around some changes that are occurring (rather quickly) in the geospatial landscape. Now before I delve into this post, I will shamelessly qualify my statements by saying that I am not attempting to make any definitive assertions or somehow trying to reinvent a wheel of knowledge that is out there, but rather I am trying to articulate some ideas and get a discussion going…any feedback on this diagram (first cut) or my thoughts would be greatly appreciated. What Was: It seems that the traditional hierarchy associated with various ‘actors’ in the geospatial landscape may not be as relevant anymore? (more…) Share This

From Writer To Author A Self Published Authors Journey
By: Jim TherrianAs a newly self published author, I am amazed by how many people have told me that they have a novel or idea for a book that they always wanted to have published. I usually tell these aspiring writers that it can happen and, if they are willing to listen, I tell them my story about how I self published my book. I have always enjoyed writing, mostly for my own enjoyment, but knew I had a talent for creative writing. My first audience was my co-workers at a bank I worked for in Seattle, where everyday, I filled in for the receptionist while she when to lunch. During that hour, I wrote installments to a suspense thriller, set on the Oregon coast, which I shared with the other assistants on the floor who eagerly awaited my new chapters. Years later, I moved to Hawaii and sent regular email updates of my adventures to my friends, which I called Memos from Maui. Living in Hawaii is kind of like living in a foreign country and I had fun sharing my observations of life on a tro

      Dueling Authors
I doubt that many book bloggers have been directly confronted by the authors they have reviewed (although I know of at least one nasty case of that happening), but it does happen regularly to newspaper critics and authors who dare to review their peers. In Friday's Washington Post, author Carolyn See reviewed Porochista Khakpour's Sons and Other Flammable Objects in the form of an open letter to

Storm Worm Authors Turn to YouTube Lures

Here’s another Authors@Google talk by James (The amazing) Randi. It’s always nice to see him in the media, he’s looking well and joking about his illness which is great to see. According to the video he’s now given up the scientific pursuit as to whether Santa Claus exists which is a great shame, but at least he has more time to spend debunking homeopathy. Vehige: 10 Authors All Catholics Should Read
A reader of this blog (our only one?) asked if Woodward and I would list the 10 or so books/authors we think Catholics should read. I haven't told Woodward about this; he'd then post before I would, and that would make my job all the more difficult.Anyway, in no particular order, here are the 10 authors I think all Catholics should read. (Sorry there aren't any links; don't have that much time.)1. G. K. Chesterton. Given that one of his greatest works, Orthodoxy, will be 100 years old next year, one could ask, "Why Chesterton?" Chesterton has a common sense that's to be admired, a a common sense that took on the modernistic ideas that are still in vogue, a common sense that is desperately needed today. Especially recommended: Orthodoxy, Saint Thomas Aquinas, and The Everlasting Man.2. Eugene Boylan. A chemist, priest, and Cistercian monk, Boylan penned what I think is the greatest spiritual book for the layperson: This Tremendous Lover. It's sane, it's practical, and it s
