NASA: No evidence of drunk astronauts
An internal NASA investigation found no evidence that astronauts tried to fly into space while inebriated but recommends that astronauts be barred from "drinking to excess" six months before launch.

In the aftermath of a report that claimed that some astronauts of varying nationalities had been drinking heavily before takeoff, NASA banned drinking for astronauts during the 12-hour period prior to takeoff. I’ll just admit right off the bat, if my personal agenda included a flight to space in a vehicle that has more than once proven to be a combustible death chamber, I’d be planning to drink heavily the night before. And would be really thankful for those space diapers they provide for the trip.
That’s just me, but I’m not an astronaut. Still, all over the news last night … local, cable, Internet, were the reports that on at least two occasions astronauts have been allowed to fly while intoxicated. No specific details, of course, about whom they were or which flights, just that it happened at least twice. In my mind I was interpreting the report to mean two loaded astronauts. Then again, maybe I was just too loaded, myself, and not paying enough attention. Because the report actually says:

I just read here some more on the supposed drunkenness by NASA astronauts. Evidence is said to be anecdotal and no names were named but the incidents mentioned might have been before launches at the Russian Baikonur Cosmodrome or before NASA T-38 flights. I was a crew chief on T-38 Talon supersonic trainers as well as their more athletic big brothers the F-5E Tiger II. Both are sweet jets by the way. But pilots will be pilots, the play hard and they drink hard. It wasn't exactly common for pilots to show up to fly drunk but it happened often enough that we had the expression: "Pouring them into the cockpit" to indicate the pilot was sloshed when we launched them. Crew chiefs just did'nt report incidents like that. Comment: When it was announced that the two Malaysian astronauts would blast off into space a couple of years back, the Malaysian public went ballistic. That is understandable, given that Malaysians had never a tradition of going into space. According the report below, now the two Malaysians will undergo training at NASA. Good for them.Nonetheless initially, when the program was first announced, the astronauts appeared to be doomed. Instead of carrying out real scientific experiments, ideas were tossed around about making roti canai (a Malaysian specialty) in space. I returned to the scene of what was one of the most surprising and entertaining shows of 2006 last night as Joseph Arthur returned to the 20th Century Theatre for a performance. The crowd was a bit lighter than last time around, but last time was also a weekend affair. Arthur’s backing band was similar to last time around, but now had the official title of “The Lonely Astronauts” and also had added Golden Smog member and multi talented artist Kraig Jarret Johnson.
The band had already wowed us earlier in the day in the WOXY lounge and the evening performance was no different. Playing mostly songs from the new album, Let’s Just Be, Arthur and his crew rifled through an excellent and entertaining 90 minute set. The band wore smiles all around for the majority of the set and seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves all night.

I don’t know about you, but I’d avoid the word “steamy” in any future diaper-related stories.
