Awards Galore For Asterisk and Digium
We should not be surprised for Asterisk receiving awards but every time I see that Asterisk does, I smile with satisfaction. Everyone of us are aware that Asterisk not only gave us the best Open Source Telephony Solution, it also changed the market. I remember when we had to 5-6 figure costs for simple PBX and 5 figure cost for add on VoIP card for existing PBXs. But now those prices have come down drastically. I am sure Asterisk played a major part in making IP PBX, everybody's tool. Then the other side of it, the whole new industry and service that was build behind Asterisk to support, promote and extend Asterisk. As a whole these factors have made Asterisk a formidable force in the telecommunications arena. So these awards, valuable confirmations from those who sees the true value of Ast

Cogoblue, Another Visual Configurator For Asterisk

Looks like the other commercial Visual configuration tool that I know, Visual Dialplan for Asterisk going have a competitor.I have mentioned about Visual Dialplan for Asterisk from version 1.2 to the latest version Visual Dialplan beta for linux. I have also tested the Visual Dialplan. And keep in mind that I have not compared every feature to feature of both these products but by browsing through both the applications capabilities as presented. Both promise to make life easier for people who deploy and manage Asterisk IPPBX.One big difference is that COGOBLUE is currently available only on ISPBX hardware. Using Asterisk In Your Blog Title - Is It Really Effective?
Some few weeks back, Ive read somewhere that putting asterisk in your blog title will catch the attention of your readers so I decided to use this tip and employ it on my blog title and heres what happened:I actually saw an uphill movement from my traffic each day around 20% of my total visits. This is after around two months of employing this technique and there might well be other factors why this happend. One, more of my pages must have been indexed by google and two, this may just be coincidental. For whatever reason this might be caused, I think im sticking with it for sometime. I may not have a 100% recommendation for you guys to employ this technique but its worth a try.If you search for "teens make money online", you will most probably see my blog on the the first page and it has an asterisk embedded. Tell me what you think about it.

The 3Com Asterisk Appliance works with 3Com’s full line of telephone handsets. This is a really interesting step with a major manufacturer such as them putting their might behind an Open Source product plus this will compete head on with their existing product range. SIP in time and Asterisk 1.4.14 release
The Asterisk Development Team has released the latest Asterisk version 1.4.14. This is a regular maintenance release that contains numerous bug fixes across the entire code base. A ChangeLog that lists all changes that were made is available with the release. The release is available on downloads.digium.com. It is also available as a patch against the previous release. A special note from ChangeLog that I found to be very importent; Those using SIP phones should be aware that Asterisk is sensitive to large jumps in time. Manually changing the system time using date(1) (or other similar commands) may cause SIP registrations and other internal processes to fail. If your system cannot keep accurate time by itself use NTP (http://www.ntp.org/) to keep the system clock synchronized to "real time". NTP is designed to keep the system clock synchronized by speeding up or slowing down the system clock until it is synchronized to "real time" rather than by jumping the time and causing discontin

      Asterisk unveils customized Linux distro
Asterisk is an open source/free software implementation of a telephone private branch exchange (PBX) originally created by Mark Spencer of Digium. The basic Asterisk software includes many features available in proprietary PBX systems: voice mail, conference calling, interactive voice response (phone menus), and automatic call distribution. Asterisk is released under a dual license scheme, the free software license being the GNU General Public License (GPL), the other being a proprietary software license as to allow proprietary/closed and patented code, such as the G.729 codec to work with the system. Asterisk runs on NetBSD, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris, although as the native platform, Linux is the most supported of these. Bonds Angry: Will Not Go Into the Hall of Fame If His 756th Home Run Ball Has An Asterisk...
Well, the All-time homerun king is back in the news, and it is not for a good reason. Yesteday, Barry Bonds would boycott Cooperstown if the Hall of Fame displays his record-breaking home run ball with an asterisk. That includes skipping his potential induction ceremony.I posted a link to the video of he appearing on MSNBC's "Countdown" last night, and I believe he's right to an extent; however, the ball is a piece of history and has a story that should be told and the asterisk on it is very important.Granted, I think it is offensive someone who would deface such an important sports artifact, but it was sold and the owner has the right to do with the ball in which he sees fit. I think the drug component is also a huge part of the story, but there is not *definitive* proof that Barry Bonds ever did anything. In the end, I find it offensive and wish the ball not marked; alas, the situation at hand is the situation at hand.

You cannot give people the freedom, the right to alter history. You can't do it. There's no such thing as an asterisk in baseball."Well Barry, allow me to tell you that you can't alter the opinions of most Americans that believe you're a cheater. A vulnerability has been reported in Asterisk, which can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) or potentially to compromise a vulnerable system. The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error within the IMAP-specific code for processing voicemail messages. This can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow via a specially crafted voicemail message sent as email containing an overly long (more than 1024 characters) combination of Content-Type or Content-Description headers.Successful exploitation requires that a user listens to the voicemail message via a phone. It is a normal Asterisk config file consisting of sections and key=value pairs.See configs/mobile.conf.sample for an example and an explanation of the configuration.Using chan_mobile :-chan_mobile.so must be loaded either by loading it using the Asterisk CLI, or by adding it to /etc/asterisk/modules.confSearch for your bluetooth devices using the CLI command 'mobile search'. Be patient with this command as it will take 8 - 10 seconds to do the discovery. This requires a free adapter.Headsets will generally have to be put into 'pairing' mode before they will show up here. This will return something like the following :-*CLI> mobile searchAddress Name Usable Type Port00:12:56:90:6E:00 LG TU500

      Carrier-Class Echo Cancellation for Asterisk
Digium, the Asterisk® Company, announced at Astricon, a new Hardware module and a Software-based High Performance Echo Cancellation Solution for carrier-class voice networks to improve audio quality and reduce VoIP infrastructure costs. For Asterisk users that connect to the PSTN, the most common type of echo is hybrid echo - the echo introduced by the impedance mismatch between 2-wire and 4-wire telephone circuits. The echo manifests as a distorted and delayed reflection of the users voice while in conversation with an external party through the PSTN.The new Digium High Performance Echo Cancellation (HPEC) solutions eliminate the need for the tuning and training sometimes required to control echo conditions in Asterisk-based voice systems. The HPEC is G.168 compliant and "toll-quality" as determined by AT&T's Voice Quality Assessment Labs using a stringent series of subjective and standardized, objective tests. As thousands of 3COM dealers and resellers around the world. Also 3COM had a good history with VoIP IP Telephony. (A search on Google for this blogs name, "VoIP IP Telephony" brings 3COM just after me! )Now Asterisk stands just next to VCX, and NBX, well established telephony brands, at 3COM. I am happy to see "3COMAsterisk" proudly displayed first in the series of VoIP products offered by 3COM.3Com will sell Asterisk as its 30-and-under solution. That's because it is aiming it's own products (NBX, VCX) at the above-30-seat market. But Asterisk might replace now aging NBX gear. This deal makes Digium make it's strong hold on enterprise market stronger. 3COM already has a certain VoIP market segments covered. It also

Cell/Mobile Phones on Asterisk with Chan_Mobile
chan_mobile is an Asterisk Channel Driver to allow Bluetooth Cell/Mobile Phones to be used as FXO devices, and Headsets as FXS devices.chan_mobile deals with both bluetooth adapters and bluetooth devices. This means you need to tell chan_mobile about the bluetooth adapters installed in your server as well as the devices (phones / headsets) you wish to use.chan_mobile currently only allows one device (phone or headset) to be connected to an adapter at a time. This means you need one adapter for each device you wish to use simultaneously. Much effort has gone into trying to make multiple devices per adapter work, but in short it doesnt.Periodically chan_mobile looks at each configured adapter, and if it is not in use (i.e. no device connected) will initiate a search for devices configured to use this adapater that may be in range. If it finds one it will connect the device and it will be available for Asterisk to use. When the device goes out of range, chan_mobile will disconnect the dev

The Asterisk Is Headed For Cooperstown!
Over much debate, and a lot of Barry bashing from yours truly, America has spoken. The record breaking 756th home run ball, hit by Barry Bonds on August 7, 2007, will be branded with an asterisk and donated to the Baseball Hall of Fame, announced Mark Ecko, the current owner of the ball.Ecko set up a website that allowed the public to vote on the fate of the ball. The choices given were to bestow it into Cooperstown, banish it into space, or brand it with an asterisk prior to giving it to Cooperstown. The public spoke, over 10 million people, actually! When I saw the choices, I first thought of banishing it into space. But, with America's luck lately, the ball would either find its way back unharmed, or be retrieved be an alien race who would then adore Bonds. But seriously, I don't think it's fair to destroy a part of history, especially in a way that might erase what the asterisk represents. However, I would NEVER have voted to bestow it, and I'm actually amazed at how many people c

The Results Are In: Bonds' Historic Ball to Be 'Decorated' With Asterisk
Last week we reported on fashion designer Marc Ecko and his purchase of Barry Bonds' #756 home run ball. Ecko promptly made a web site allowing fans to decide on the fate of the ball voting on 3 different choices. The fans have spoken. Here are the results:A. Bestow it intact to Cooperstown: 34%B. Permanently brand the ball with an asterisk before sending to Cooperstown: 47%C. Launch it into space forever: 19%So it has been determined by the people. The Hall of Fame-bound home run record breaking ball will be forever tarnished -- just as Bonds' legacy may have been due to steroid allegations -- with a big ol' asterisk symbolizing the possible illegitimacy of Bonds' feat.Related:Vote756.comBonds' 756 ball to be branded [MLB.com]

Cacti Script for Asterisk SIP/IAX2 Monitoring and Graphing
If you are using Cacti for you network monitoring, you can add Asterisk to the list of servers/ services that cacti monitors.Cacti is a complete frontend to RRDTool, it stores all of the necessary information to create graphs and populate them with data in a MySQL database. The frontend is completely PHP driven. Along with being able to maintain Graphs, Data Sources, and Round Robin Archives in a database, cacti handles the data gathering. There is also SNMP support for those used to creating traffic graphs with MRTG.But the cream here is what ITConnection.ru created and posted the Cacti script for Asterisk IP-PBX statistics. It's based on Python, works over AMI connection and provides comprehensive graphs like this (more at where IConnection posted it);Astpligg lead me to the news.Tags: Asterisk, Asterisk monitoring, Asterisk cacti, cacti, RRDTool, MySQL, Graphs, IAX2, SIP, VoIP

      Asterisk 1.4.11 released
The Asterisk development team has released version 1.4.11. This version contains numerous bug fixes. One of these is for a security issue in chan_sip. The issue is that SIP dialog history was being stored in memory regardless if the option for this was turned on or off. This could be abused to cause a system using chan_sip to run out of memory. The security issue is documented in AST-2007-020. Affected systems include any that are using chan_sip. Also, only Asterisk 1.4 is affected. Asterisk 1.2 is not vulnerable to this issue. http://downloads.digium.com/pub/asa/AST-2007-020.pdfTags: Asterisk 1.4, Asterisk 1.2, chan_sip, AST-2007-020, Asterisk 1.4.11, SIP dialog history

My readers may or may not be sports fans, but I am. I am a BIG sports fan, and have been following the Barry Bonds saga for years now. Last night he broke Hank Aaron's All-time Home Run record. I've not read the book that condemns Bonds, but I guess that I feel he's guilty of cheating. If you've lived on the moon, here's the scoop: Bonds was a great player. Bonds didn't hit as many home runs as some other players. Bonds then pumped his body full of artificial (and illegal, but not in baseball at the time) substances. Bonds then saw his head swell to the size of a watermelon, and he began hitting many home runs, all while in his late 30's and early 40's. Obviously he's done something for this increase in production when most are in a decline. The basic argument in favor of Barry Bonds is this: "Steroids weren't illegal in baseball until recently. So he wasn't breaking any rules, instead Major League Baseball is to blame for not having rules in place."This will preach in

Well, he did it and we can all get back to our lives ... waiting for A-Rod or someone else to pass him. THE ASTERISK CHAMPION OF THE WORLD - EastsideBoxing.com
24.07.07 - By Carlos Acevedo: Every now and then Benito Mussolini would wrestle a young tiger in public to show off his vigor, and to display, symbolically, the power of Fascist Italy. At the time, not many people knew that the tiger had been declawed and defanged prior to its scheduled rumble with Il Duce. Inevitably, the poor tiger would go on to lose a unanimous decision. When Wladimir Klitschko pummeled the ghost of Lamon Brewster two weeks ago and the boxing mill began churning out a rumor more…

      Shun the asterisk
When communicating to your target audience, you want to get your message across clearly and quickly. The asterisk will stop you from achieving this. That's because the asterisk interrupts your readers from your message, makes them go to the bottom of the page to read something that's probably not a direct benefit to them anyway and then go back up to continue where they left off. This doesn't make for a quick and clear read. In fact, it often opens a door that says: "Run and don't look back."So instead of using asterisks as footnotes, say what you need to say right in the body of the copy. It can be a parenthetical. And if it's not a benefit to your audience, try to turn it into one. In other words, there's never a need to use asterisks in your sell or branding copy unless your legal department tells you to.
