News: Did Pilots Fell Asleep in a 30 Minute Flight?
As a frequent traveller, each time I step onto a plane, I feel like I am handing over my life to someone else. I try not to think about the risks involved in flying at 10 miles above safe ground. Sometimes, though news reports make me doubt if I should trust "the system", I hand my life to. This is one of them:Go! Flight 1002 took off from Honolulu at 9:20 a.m. on Feb. 13. It was scheduled to land in Hilo at 10:05 a.m., but the plane flew beyond Hilo Airport and was out of contact with air traffic controllers for more than 20 minutes, officials said.Investigators are trying to determine whether the pilots fell asleep and continued to fly out to sea, or if there was some sort of technical communication problem. The FAA said that even if the pilots did have a communication problem, normal pro

      Falling Asleep Loved
Eli definitely knows that when he falls asleep he is loved by his mommy and daddy. I think when a kid falls asleep there has to be a little apprehension involved. Maybe it goes deeper than what we as parents can see. I personally think it would be kinda scary to be put into a bed, in a dark room with stuffed animals staring at me and expected to fall asleep. Tired or not, it has to be a scary situation. I do my best to try to conquer this possible fear by making bedtime fun and showering Eli with affection. I think getting him to laugh, smile and play right before bed accomplishes a few things: It tires him out! He knows he is loved! He understands that Daddy will be there in the morning when he wakes up to make him breakfast and take care of him! We read stories, jump and bounce in the bed, snuggle, tackle, tickle and talk about the day. Maybe I am full of crap and going to sleep for a child is just a normal non-scary event but even if that is true, I know that I am more comfortable g

      Asleep at the Wheel?
Spud1 notices a new CREW report documenting waste at the Department of Homeland Security. A department, you'll remember, over which Sen. Collins had oversight responsibility until this January.Among the findings is what CREW terms a "$2 billion loss on the SBInet 'virtual fence' border program."I don't know enough about the program--or about CREW's methodology--to know whether that ten-figure "loss" is as shocking as it seems. But I'm pretty sure that allowing DHS to remain a bastion of cronyism and incompetence won't stop the wasteful spending.(It won't solve our illegal immigration problems either.)

I think I am falling asleep.....
Did anyone else think the Democratic debate hosted by NPR this afternoon was rather yawn-inducing? I listened to it while sorting through the year's supply of things like deodorant and lipstick that I bought today (I leave for Kyrgyzstan in 26 days - time to start packing!), and to be honest, I found dividing OTC meds and undies between suitcases more interesting than the debate. Now, I certainly give props to NPR for hosting a debate which centered on issues rather than getting good ratings for the network... but it was tough to pay attention, even for me - and I'm totally into political debates. It may have been that I was listening to it on my computer with its less than stellar speakers, as opposed to on my ipod (the podcast hadn't yet become available at the time, and I was impatient), but I didn't bring anything away from the debate. Anything. Did you?And for something more interesting, this week on BlogSupergroup, we're discussing the Christmas holiday season and the crass

Rogue Wave - Asleep At Heaven's Gate
Let's face it, not every album in every band's back catalog can be spectacular. Let's hope that the latest from Rogue Wave is simply a misstep on their way to a brilliant career. While I really loved their excellent 2005 album Descended Like Vultures, their latest, Asleep at Heaven's Gate just ain't doing it for me. Sure it's good, and better than a good portion of what was released this year. It just isn't as good as the Bay Area foursome's previous two records. Asleep at Heaven's Gate sounds like exactly the record that Rogue Wave wanted to (and may have needed to) make. Maybe it has to do with the band's departure from Sub Pop and their new affiliation with Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records or perhaps it is the band trying to get back up to speed after drummer Pat Spurgeon's unfortunate kidney trouble last year but Asleep at Heaven's Gate sounds unfocused. It seems to be an ambitious (and perhaps a little indulgent) record for the band that just doesn't work. Sur

Falling Asleep While Driving Claims Lives
We are all familiar that if you are sleepy, the chances of forcing yourself to drive may be dangerous. For one thing, driving needs full attention and alertness and if you don’t care much for your safety, just consider the passengers and the victims you may hurt if you are not careful. A lot of people have encountered accidents due to drivers who fall asleep. Causes usually stem from being drunk or lacking sleep overall. This often occurs in late nights to early mornings when people think there are lesser cars. But the thing is, the probability of incurring an accident is quite high. People want to get to their homes hastily but consider options especially if you cannot keep your eyes wide open. I thought I was having nightmares but then I realized I wasn’t asleep!
The mass nightmare I fear is the current polluted environment we have allowed to completely encompass our school aged children. To truly understand this environment entirely, allow me to first state these three individual nightmares completely and seemingly separate and distinct. However they collectively create the magnitude and far reaching influence of the environment I am referring to. I am not attempting to be an alarmist or simply trying to frighten you in the spirit of the season of Halloween. This environment is truly a nightmare and you too will experience its frightening effects sooner or later with your children. The first nightmare I refer to doesn't sound all that frightening and it seems more of a pet-peeve rather than a real problem. Lately, I have noticed this happening whenever a news agency has the two major political parties on a talk-show to discuss and answer questions. When one side, and it truly doesn't matter which side, because they both do it, is asked to ans

Dry Point & Watercolor: Asleep in Rome
Asleep in Rome 4.75x4.75 Dry Point with WatercolorDrypoint on plexiglass is a nice alternative if you don't have buckets of acid laying around to etch metal plates. Draw your image directly on the plexi, and use a whistler's needle - or twisted scribe - to cross hatch toothy, ink-holding textures where you want darks. Every line you scrape is a trench to hold a little bit of ink.I've cross hatched on top of the cross hatch to ensure that enough pigment will adhere to the areas where I want darkest darks. Dry Point prints a softer line than an etching, so I've found that you really have to dig - and do so at an angle - to kick up a bur in the plexi. It will give more of a curb for the ink to hold on to.Laying brown etching ink on the plate with a bondo scraper. Each ink application, and each trip through the press squashes the tooth of the line work flat, so it holds less and less ink, and prints really light after a handful of impressions. Dry points are usually printed in smaller

Man Asleep at the Wheel Causes Police to Jump in the Vehicle to Stop It
According to police, a 26-year-old man by the name of Pedro Fernando Brito was sleeping in his truck as it drove down the road this past Sunday.  The man did not wake up when his truck crossed over the centerline, or when one of the police officers jumped in the vehicle as it was moving and put the truck in neutral. The complaint said that he was unresponsive when the officer stopped the vehicle and that “Police had to shake the defendant’s shoulder and yell at him to wake him up.”  Lt. Todd Sandel, a Richfiel police officer, said “This is a weird one.  Strange,” and that “he was out to the world, behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.  We were lucky it was 3:30 a.m.” The misdemeanors that the man is charged for include refusing to take an alcohol test, driving while intoxicated and driving with a revoked license.  Brito has said that he did not have anything to drink, but police say that his eyes were very watery and bloodshot.  They also

      Falling asleep to Mozart
The other night, the kids had the idea to sleep in the living room in their sleeping bags. So instead of reading stories, I played the piano until they fell asleep. Adam fell asleep during the second movement from Mozart Piano Sonata K. 332:(Image from Merci beaucoup, monsieur Mozart. When I was younger, I had actually drawn this portion of the sheet music in color because I loved it so much, but now I can't find it ). Dova finally fell asleep about 3 selections later, during the 3rd mvt. of Mozart Sonata in F K.533, arguably the best sonata Mozart wrote, which I wouldn't have known about if it weren't for Baby Mozart. It was a wonderful change of routine as they had never fallen asleep to the piano at nighttime (I remember Adam may have for naps but more out of sheer exhaustion). They were quiet while I played for a change and drifted peacefully off to sleep with the music. I was so lucky to be part of that experience.

My husband was still asleep when I awoke early yesterday. The sun was already beginning to pour round the curtain into our room and it was obvious that it was going to be hot. The last few days we have had rain as the tail-end of the weather system that brought floods to England crossed over Central Europe. The parched earth here was desperate for rain and drank it in. The Czechs were getting worried. No snow melt this year, due to virtually no snow, and now no spring or summer rain - there would be no mushrooms and the Czechs are lost without mushrooms. Czech coins feature a heraldic lion with two tails – it would be more appropriate if it was a fungus rampant.I too have caught the mushroom bug – so leaving husband and son sleeping I snuck out of the house and climbed the path to the woods above the village. Even before I got there I was picking small puffballs in the grass and then on entering the woods I discovered that the rain had indeed worked its magic. My basket was soon ha

Part 2Asleep At Heaven's Gate is an album about hopes and fears, triumphs and tragedies, sadness and joy. Filled with darkness and light swirled together, Asleep At Heaven's Gate is a stirring sonic reminder of the dualities that make life such an unforgettable and incomparable ride.Emerson once wrote, "When it is darkest, men see the stars" and he might as well have been penning a poem for Rogue Wave. Last year was a rollercoaster ride for the foursome; drummer Pat Spurgeon had a kidney transplant, keyboardist Gram LeBron lost his father, singer Zach Rogue had a daughter and the band recruited a new bass player (Patrick Abernethy, formerly of Beulah). But instead of falling apart, they converted all their heartbreak, love, hurt, pain, elation and insight into a most affecting and beguiling record, Asleep At Heaven's Gate. They are religious, yet sometimes I tell them that they should act like one, because they don't live or act like one at times. That is the problem with so called religious people, some just don't act nor live like they are religious. Is it being phoney? I don't know, if you are such a big sinner and you go to church, does it lessen you sin? My mother believeds so...hmmm...hopefully she is right, if that is all it takes. And if by all means, since the BTK killer was a church member and went to church every Sunday, could it be that he has lessened his sin?

      Momma, Are You Asleep?
These were the words that roused me at 1:30am this morning. “What’s wrong Baby?” I asked. “Nothing. I just want to be with you guys,” he replied, standing next to our bed, clutching his pillow and little toy chimp. In a sleep induced stupor I agreed (I know, I know) and pulled him into our bed. This simple act ensured a good night’s sleep for our darling son and a spotty night’s sleep for Mom and Dad. Thus my desperate need to lay down this afternoon around 3pm. Johnny crawled up next to me, just to chat me up about why I was laying down at this unusual hour. “Why don’t we take a little snooze Honey? You and Momma?” I said in a failed attempt to obtain some quiet. “But, I’m really not sleepy Momma,” he said earnestly. “Well, Honey. Momma is very, very tired. I didn’t sleep very well last night.” “Oh, Momma!” he said, taking my face in his little five year-old hands. &ldq

      Asleep EARLY???
Yes, tonight my little angel has actually been asleep since 8:20!!! I can’t remember when the last time that happened was! Last night it was 10:45!! But that was under special circumstances and can’t be blamed completely on her. My parents were visiting and we had a fun filled day of playing outside and eating ice cream right before bed…. we knew we shouldn’t have, but honestly bedtime doesn’t go easily without ice cream, so we thought why not let her enjoy too. My parents had a blast with her. She was having tea parties and sticker book fun with my dad… he and my mom were impressed at her adding skills. I know I have told them and thought she had “shown off” for them but I guess I was wrong. She definitely did NOT get that skill from Mommy :)  We grilled some yummy dinner, played outdoors a lot including her pool, bubbles, slide, ring toss, frisbee, balls, and spraying with the hose, so she was happy and we all had a nice day togethe

of Montreal - Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse
Part 2Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse is the fourth full-length album by indie rock band of Montreal, released in 2001 by Kindercore Records. Considered their most ambitious work to date, the record is more of a full band recording than previous of Montreal albums. Barnes' storytelling style was at its most apparent, with the majority of songs on the album telling stories about invented characters (in one case, forsaking music altogether, in the spoken word "The Events Leading Up to the Collapse of Detective Dulllight"). As a whole, the album is a loose concept album.Site: Of MontrealSimilar Artists: Neutral Milk Hotel, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, Architecture in Helsinki, Broken Social Scene, The Shins, The Unicorns

      She's Asleep and I'm Sad.
I just realized that I have been sitting here looking around the Internet and writing my "opinion articles" for the past hour and I haven't heard a peep out of Cara. I was really skeptical about the "Ferber Method".  When I say skeptical, I mean to say that if you had told me three months ago that I would use it I would have said "No way in hell!".  Then again, if three months ago you had told me

They made me an offer I couldn't refuse. No, really, I was asleep.
Busy, busy, busy Busy, busy, busy.  That’s really all there is to it this week.  I have done nothing at all besides work, work, and more work and I’ll tell ya, I’m starting to feel the burn.  On the bright side, it’s been going remarkably well.  All the pictures have been taken and edited, all the product descriptions have been written, all the packaging has been settled on and prices decided.  I even designed and drew a logo.  This weekend should find the website completed and, with a little research and testing at the beginning of next week, I should be ready to go.  Sadly, all of this was of little consolation to the cats who decided that my absence was unacceptable and informed me of this by peeing.  On my pillow.  In my bed.  While I was using it.  There’s really nothing like waking up to warm puddles.  I imagine it’s not that different from waking up with a severed horse head in your bed.  Only, perhaps, a little scarier.   And now,

Don’t Fall Asleep Driving on the Road
Sooner or later, people who are on the go will have to take heed that lack of sleep may claim lives if not incapacitate people. Such mishaps can be seen. Many point this towards falling asleep behind the wheel or being drunk which many of us now is a prime reason for falling into these dizzy traps we encounter. We all want to get to our own homes and lay on our beds as quickly as possible. But in able to do so, we must make sure we can reach them first. Attending events or forever being on the outside and trying to socialize or earn a living should have its own share of limitations. As humans, we will all get to the point of that need of rest since that is how our bodies work. Hence, the next time you may be traveling by car, make sure you are fit to drive. Lives need sleep but not permanent ones where we may not wake up soundly anymore. Kimi Raikkonen: 'I almost fell asleep'
Three days after the victory in Melbourne, Kimi Raikkonen spoke to Ferrari World about his impressions: "I've never hidden my joy, since the first day I came to Maranello," said Kimi. "Now, after the success in the first race with the team, I am - in case this is possible - even more joyful. When I signed my contract with Ferrari I thought that it would be nice to win as soon as possible, but in Melbourne it came even faster than expected, when I managed to win in my first race with the Prancing Horse. I have never in my whole career won the opening race of the season and that was something that gave me a whole lot of satisfaction. When you start to race for a new team, you try to be successful as soon as possible and to manage to do that on the day of the debut means that you couldn't' be any better. In a certain sense last winter's dream came true. Ferrari and I really started with the best foot forward: victory, pole position and fastest lap in the race. From the outside it mig

did I fall asleep and wake up in the 1950's?
In a recent article about the upcoming Kratt Brothers’ show on Bainbridge Island, a reporter for a local paper here wrote the following when pointing out which Kratt Brother moms believe is the “cute one:” “…and this is said to be the subject of much contemplation on lonely afternoons at the ironing board…” Boy, did he get that right! Nothing fills my afternoon daydreams when I stand at the ironing board like fantasizing about hosts of children’s tv shows, particularly when they frequently fall into pools and streams and get soaking wet on those shows. Right after I send my children out to play in the street, pop a little helper, and untangle my pearls, my mind can’t help but wander as I press out my dear, hard-working, bread-winning husband’s tidy whities and scrub out that ring around the collar ’til it’s glistens. Even as I stir up another glass of Tang, perked up with a little something extra just for fla

      Never happens when I'm asleep
I’m working from home today, and without warning my internet connection just died. TDC is my service provider here in Denmark and the provide my Internet, telephone and cable TV over one fat pipe that comes into my house. Funnily enough I also have my mobile phones on their service, but that’s something different. I can’t really complain about TDC’s service, as it has been quite good (except for the exceptional hassle we had just getting them to give us an internet connection) and I haven’t had many unexpected outages this year. At most 4 in the whole year and only one of them was for longer than a few minutes. It’s just frustrating to have the outage now as I’m in the middle of finishing an important project for a client and I said I’d upload the work to their servers by 2 PM. It’s 12:23 PM now so I hope the connection comes back ASAP. I think it sounds so lame to call the customer and blame not having the work uploaded on my inte

Britney Spears falls asleep, breaks contracts
Britney Spears might not get paid the alleged $400,000 appearance fee for her New Year's "work" at Pure in Las Vegas because they say she violated the contract by not spending enough time there. "Britney failed to spend the agreed amount of time in the club, because she had to be helped out after collapsing," alleges a close source. The tipster also says the club is "furious" with her because of her PR spin that she merely fell asleep - implying the place is boring. That's why you don't hire Britney Spears. For anything. Ever. I thought she could handle working at Burger King once, but at the end of the day I had twenty seven complaints from customers who had all been served shoes. "Whole story Via: Net"

      Falling asleep in church...
One day Mrs. Smith went to have a talk with the minister at the local church. "Reverend," she said, "I have a problem, my husband keeps falling asleep during your sermons. It's very embarrassing. What should I do?""I have an idea," said the minister. "Take this needle with you.I will be able to tell when Mr. Smith is sleeping, and I will motion to you at specific times. When I motion, you give him a good poke in the leg."In church the following Sunday, Mr. Smith dozed off. Noticing this, the preacher put his plan to work. "And who made the ultimate sacrifice for you?" he said, nodding to Mrs. Jones."Jesus!", Jones cried as his wife jabbed him the leg with the needle."Yes, you are right, Mr. Smith," said the minister. Soon, Mr.Smith nodded off again. Again, the minister noticed. "Who is your redeemer?" he asked the congregation, motioning towards Mrs. Smith."God!" Mr. Smith cried out as he was stuck again with the needle."Right again," said the minister, smiling. Before long, Mr.Smith
