Last night the argument about the bail out for the big 3 automakers hit our living room. A heated discussion between my husband and myself started during the NBC Nightly News.

Our Class Inheritance Parser has just received a major update. Among the changes is the support for Constructor Arguments.
Most programming languages allow you to pass parameters when you create an instance of your class. These are called constructor arguments. VBScript’s constructor (the Class_Initialize sub) can not receive parameters, so usually we must resort to solutions as a “Build” o

Its well worth a read, and reiterates a lot of arguments I’ve previously made myself on various web forums so I’m very happy to recommend it.

Whenever I get into arguments with people on the Left regarding capitalism and free markets, I give them such a thrashing that they eventually get backed into a corner. When their weak arguments have nowhere else to turn, they attempt to change the subject by asserting that all capitalism's progress is going to cause global warming; then I know I have won the debate.Nevertheless, I often get into

I find this talk of genetically modified food being necessary to feed the world's population incredible ('As the world begins to starve it's time to take GM seriously', Comment, last week). Yes, it would get us out of a scrape in the short term, but we have to realise that we cannot carry on expanding the population and consuming resources without consequences. If the population continues to grow, we will reach a situation where even GM cannot feed everyone, never mind competing for space, water, a clean environment and the chance for other species to exist. Overpopulation is the biggest single cause of our environmental woes and we cannot make significant improvements without addressing this.Ryan Taylor, London SW9Crop yields need to increase by 1.6 per cent per year (compounded) to avoid

"The Thirteen American Arguments" takes a sweeping look at the fundamental debates that, Fineman argues, have shaped America from its seventeenth-century colonial roots. Who, for instance, is a person? Who, for that matter, is an American? What is the role of faith in public life, or the role of the individual vis as vis an expansive, growing state? How, ultimately, can we make sure our system is equitable and "fair"? Fineman's years as a high-level political reporter have armed him with a library of up-close-and-personal anecdotes that give the book its flavor, but the real meat of each chapter comes from the condensed--in some cases, one wishes they were less so--historical perspective offered on each debate. Whether it comes to the Supreme Court's many contradictory rulings on

The medication wars:
By Nadine Thomas-Brown, Guardian Lifestyles Reporter -
Nassau, Bahamas:
There's a war raging in the world of medicine as many people are opting for the path of "natural" or "herbal" remedies, as opposed to taking prescribed medicines from their medical practitioner.
Many doctors are perplexed as to why patients would stop taking prescribed medication and opt for the "natural route". Their advise is not to. They say that while natural remedies may have their place, they may not be the safest bet.
Dr. Martin Brown, a general practitioner cautions that while natural medicines have their uses, they have just as many side effects as natural ones.
The difference he says is that pharmaceutical medicines have been researched and the side effects noted. In fact the dru

If the Court decides in favor of Richlin, which is claiming $52,000 in paralegal fees, paralegal utilization will be seen as efficient and cost-effective. Nathan at Very Special Monkeys has an interesting post on the subject of "rational Christianity" and why it is inherently flawed. The crux of his argument centers on the nature of ex post facto discourse and how Christians are often guilty of using it to defend their beliefs. I thought this was worth highlighting here since it is likely to be a concept with which many people are unfamiliar.Briefly, an ex post facto argument is a logically flawed claim in which claimant begins by assuming that an unsupported claim is true and then reasons backward from the claim in order to support it. Students of logic will immediately recognize the problems with such an approach. Instead of offering premises which lead to a conclusion, the ex post facto claim begins with the conclusion, assumes it to be t

I found the New York Times editorials relating to the Annapolis summit disappointing. I read Thomas Friedman twice to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Even after my double-check I’m still left with the impression that he didn’t say much. It can be summed as “Yay, Annapolis” along with an obligatory pessimism, in case the process ends like all other Israeli-Palestinian accords. From someone who’s considered one of the world’s leading columnists, I’d expect something more insightful.The editorial titled “Starting from Annapolis” was even more problematic. Its expectation that an Israeli-Palestinian agreement “could also diminish the appeal of Islamic extremists and begin to repair America’s battered reputation in the Muslim world” is a complete misreading of reality. If anyone on the editorial board of the NYT truly thinks that Israel / Palestine is the main reason for Islamic-American confrontation (and more specifically Iranian-American conflict), then world-
Whenever the debate turns to e-book readers – and especially, of late, the Kindle – people seem to divide sharply for or against, with few concessions. Have you ever wanted to be able to process an arbitrary number of command-line arguments in your Bash scripts? Well, fear not! It is actually quite easy. All you need is one of the special built-in variables of the Bash shell. The “$@” variable gives you the parameters passed on without any expansion and seen as separate words. This means you can iterate through them without much fuss.
#!/bin/bash
if [ -z "$1" ]; then
echo -e "
Usage: `basename $0` arg 1 [arg 2] [etc.]..."
exit 1
fi
echo "Found $# Command-Line Arguments"
idx=1
for arg in "$@"
do
echo "Arg[$idx] = ${arg}"
let "idx += 1"
done
exit 0
The first part of this script uses the “-z” test to see if the first positional command-line argument is null. If it is then the script simply outputs a usage statement and exits with a non-zero return value. Otherwise the script goes into a for loop which simply outputs the value of each command-line argument in turn. Notice I also used the “$#&rd
Do you know that arguments in a relationship slow down the body's ability to heal? With the stress added on, it will reduce the process even more.I saw an article which I happened to read during one of the work courses in NIE. The researchers (both husband and wife), study 42 couples with blisters. During the 1st visit, they were told to discuss something that encourages each other. While the 2nd visit, they were instructed to resolve a disagreement.After each visit, their levels of cytokines were measured. Cytokines are messengers that pass messages to cells, to heal the wound. The researchers discovered that the amount of cytokines is lower during the 2nd visit compared to the 1st. Furthermore, those most hostile couple took two days longer to heal.However, arguments in a relationship are a formula for staying together =) Just don't be overboard.

I've been dating for 4 years, and of course it's a norm that relationships are full of ups and downs. There will be countless arguments even over a slightest issue. But do not be surprised that is it actually a formula for staying together.One should not be too egoistic and the main thing is to learn how to say "sorry". Just like what Dr Clio Cresswell said, "Couples who compromise the least usually stay together the longest. A conversation between a couple will always be bursting with patterns, just like mathematics." Therefore, if you and your partner can't reach an easy conclusion, agree to disagree and move on. Don't dwell on it for a few days till if affect your work or others. Perhaps that's why my arguments with him doesn't last for more than 24 hours =P

There are speculation that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had political arguments to a certain point that the actress allegedly threw wine over Brad’s face but there is a truth on the speculations.
(more…)
So Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie do argue over politics. Reports from a few weeks back claimed that one debate got so heated that Jolie tossed a glass of red wine in Brad's face over a debate on the US presidential elections. Now Angelina is coming clean in an interview with the German Magazine Spiegel.She told the magazine in a lengthy question and answer interview: "We're trying to learn more about global issues and politics together. That's the only thing we ever argue about. Brad is really focused on his production company and films, but we both plan to do a lot less of that in the next few years."She added that political causes and actors usually don't mix. "don't necessarily think that's a natural role for an actor. Sometimes acting and politics make a very bad combination. I think that sometimes people take me less seriously in my work for the UNIn the most ridiculous question of the interview Jolie was asked, "In many Western countries people don't trust politicians an
As true now as it was then:Perhaps the sentiments contained in the following pages, are not yet sufficiently fashionable to procure them general favor; a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defence of custom. But the tumult soon subsides."Thomas Paine Common Sense, January 1776Why are so many so heatedly opposed to homeschooling? I truly believe it boils down to two factors: a reaction to the unknown (custom) and a reaction to stereotypes (the process of classifying the unfamiliar in relation to the familiar). Public school is our common experience and thus has the "superficial appearance of being right."I am not sure why this organizisation finds it "surprising" that there is so little evidence indicating that homeschooling is "detrimental" to children, but at least they point out that the arguments are philosophical rather than actual. And they quote one of the more interesting argument

Have a look at the following code:
#include<iostream.h>
#define MAX 10
void main(void)
{
for(int i=1;i<=MAX;i++)
cout<<i<<endl;
}
Above we have used the type of macro expansion that we learnt in the article
Introduction to C++ Preprocessor Directives
Do you know that just like functions we can have arguments in the macros too!
The following code shows how:
#include<iostream.h>
// this is how macros with
// arguments are defined
// NOTE: THERE SHOULD NOT BE
// ANY SPACE BETWEEN THE
// MACRO TEMPLATE (i.e. AREA)
// AND THE PARANTHESIS
// CONTAINING THE ARGUMENTS
// (i.e. (x))
#define AREA(x) (x*x)
void main(void)
{
// calling a macro
// is almost similar
// to calling a function
cout<<AREA(10);
}
It is that simple! However, keep one thing in mind as stated in the comments
not to put any space between the macro template and the braces containing the
argument.
#define AREA(x)
C# 2.0 provides greater flexibility in terms of simplicity. You can pass a block of code to a delegate just like a method, but here no method name exists. Imagine sending methods signature and code body to the delegate, but not the name. This signature and block of code without a name is called an anonymous method. It may sound a bit confusing why to send a method to a delegate without its name? Well, anonymous methods basically reduce the amount of code that is required first to declare a method and then to assign it to a delegate. But you cannot use anonymous method again n again in your code, anonymous methods are best suitable in conditions where you need to execute a block of code just once. Take a look at the following example.delegate int calculator(int a,int b); //Declare a delegate. class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { //Instance of delegate assigned an annoym
In the third chapter of The God Delusion, Richard Dawkins meets all the most famous arguments that theologians through time have put forth to validate their belief in God. On the first few pages Dawkins goes through Thomas Aquinas (see picture) five proofs of God. The first three are essentially the same and all says that something cannot be created from nothing, ergo God. The response here is simply that God is also something and therefore, according to the logics, cannot come from nothing so this is not really a solution. Dawkins also finds space to cite what I think was a funny little paradox that Karen Owens once posted. Can omniscient God, who Knows the future, find The omnipotence to Change His future mind? An omniscient God must know what will happen in the future, including what he will, himself, do. If the entire future is already spelled out, then it should be pretty hard to change your mind right? Aquinas also gave the argument from degree which is not really an argument
There are arguments against abortion.
And then there is this.
Intellectuals these days often argue that a woman has a right to choose. Our holy spirit says if she knew what was really going on beneath all surface appearances, a woman would not have a question of choice.
Abortion or Birth? Who Believes There is a Choice?
And the anti-intectuals argue what? “Oh look at the cute baby! Such a cutie. Yes you are.”
Some literary examples?
“Izzum’s ickle heart a-beatin’ so floppity! Um’s own mumsy make ums all right, um’s p’eshus Flopit!” — Booth Tarkington ./a>
“A Peke, the ickle angel pet, wiv his gweat big soulful eyes and his ickle black nosie — oh so ducky-duck!” — George Orwell.
By the way, I really love when people use ‘intellectual’ as a pejorative. The implication is what? That you have no respect for the intellect? For education? For intelligence? For reason?
The New York Times reported yesterday that the British military, after allowing homosexuals to serve in 2000, has encountered no complications with the policy. According to members of the Ministry of Defense, the biggest news of the policy is that "there is no news." There has been no evidence of harassment or loss of morale.Of course, this stands in stark contrast to the U.S. military, which continues its policy of forbidding gays to serve openly. Even though we are allegedly engaged in the fight for our civilization in the war on terror, homosexuals are apparently not welcome in such an important fight. But it appears that all the arguments against allowing homosexuals to serve openly in the military are mere phantom arguments.Just as in the gay marriage debate, critics couch their opposition in the language of the horrible effects such a policy will have on the population at large and America. But these arguments lack empirical data to back them up. Let's put the policy in place, s
Lately I’ve started reading mainstream conservative blogs like Michelle Malkin and Little Green Footballs. Not just to see what they’re up to. And not just for that masochistic thrill of reading opinions that offend me (I know some of you know what I mean). Not to make my attacks sharper. Not even necessarily to be more broad-minded.
No, I read to get a sense of their style of writing and thinking. Because I don’t always understand how they get from A to B - or should I say, from A to A, because all too often in the black-and-white world of party-line pundits there is only room for one kind of thinking.
Take, for example, this amazing essay (kindly publicized by LGF) by columnist Bill Whittle. Emphasizing the value of “critical thinking,” Whittle builds from a de-bunking of the Loch Ness Monster myth to the remarkable conclusion that we should not question our government or big business. Furthermore, those who have questions about 9/11 or the JFK assassin

The Benefits of the EU.1. ReformsCAP is being reformed, albeit slowly, prices are being brought closer to world levels; the EU is targeting subsidies to those farmers who need. This process is not complete but it shows reforms can be made. This will lead to better trade negotiations in the future.2. Bureaucracy Costs Relatively LowBureaucracy costs represent a very small % of the EU budget. The UK contribution to the EU is also quite small, only 1.5% of GDP. The UK makes a contribution of £14.2 billion (£4.7 billion net after rebates and grants). This comprises payments of £2.2 billion to European institutions, £15 billion for the Common Agricultural Policy, £1 billion for the Common Fisheries Policy.3. Benefits of Free Movement of LabourFree Movement of Labour and People has many benefits. The UK has had labour market shortages. Immigrants have filled in various undesirable jobs. It also enables UK residents to travel and work abroad, without restrictions.4. Increased Trade and
Disadvantages of European Union include:1. Common Agricultural Policy.The CAP has been reformed, but arguably it still is an inefficient method of subsidising the declining agricultural sector.For a long time the EU has maintained target prices for agricultural goods above the market price; this has various disadvantages:Higher prices for consumersHigher Tariffs on Imports required, this has been a stumbling block to tradeHigh prices encouraged oversupply. EU had to buy surplus that was created.Expensive for EU Taxpayer. - CAP budget accounts for nearly 50% of total EU budget. It costs UK £14 billion per year.The UK has a relatively small but efficient agricultural sector, therefore it benefits the least from CAP.2. High levels of Bureaucracy and Administration within the EU.The Bruges Group, a Eurosceptic think-tank, estimated that the combined direct and indirect costs in 2007 will amount to £100,000 a minute, or £52.4 billion — about £2 billion more than this year. This includ
The Supreme Court of Florida has ordered oral arguments to be heard on April 16, 2007 regarding proposed legislation for paralegal regulation. Both the South Florida Paralegal Association and the Florida Bar Association have filed briefs.
Regardless of the type of man you are — strong with bold opinions, moderate with no taste for confrontation or passive with a gelatinous backbone — guess what? Unless you’re made of wood, you are going to be dating, you are going to get into arguments, and the expectation (at least from the female perspective) is that you are going to lose those arguments. Any type of man could, at any time, find himself in any kind of an argument. Maybe your pants were off when they really should have been on. Perhaps you zigged when you should have zagged, or, despite your best intentions, you just spoke out of turn. The trick to saving face in a fight is to always be prepared. You wouldn’t go out for a night on the town without some cash and a pressed shirt, would you? So why would you head into a relationship battle without your best artillery? There are rules to follow. Nobody wants to be that guy in the corner getting a lecture from his best gal, especially when he could have co
The Headline says it allFBI used Patriot Act to invade privacy, intimidate businessesAll it took to do this was to scare the living crap out of Americans long enough to enact this law. There is no reason for this, they did not gather this information. This country has been had...and you can hear the Democrats who opposed the Patriot Act and were called unpatriotic and defeatist screaming a rousing "WE TOLD YOU SO!"I can see right through Robert Mueller;“We strive to exercise our authorities consistent with the privacy protections and civil liberties that we are sworn to uphold,” Mueller said. “Anything less will not be tolerated. While we’ve already taken some steps to address these shortcomings, I am ordering additional corrective measures to be taken immediately.” translation: "Ah, you caught us, sorry, ok, we'll stop"The Patriot Act needs to be repealed, or at the very least, heavily altered.
Here's something from the International Herald Tribune (Hat tip: Dawnsblood), and I think he's got something going here:
"My values are yours, those of the republican right," Sarkozy said. "These are the values of fairness, order, merit, work, responsibility. I accept them. But in these values in which I believe, there is also movement. I am not a conservative. I do not want an immobile France. I want innovation, creativity, the struggle against injustices."
Despite the French republican ideal that ignores religious and ethnic differences, for example, Sarkozy broke with tradition by referring to the French as the "heirs of 2000 years of Christianity."
He said that Turkey "does not have its place" as a member of the European Union.
In a veiled reference to those Muslims and immigrants who resist the French model of integration, he said it was unacceptable to "want to live in France without respecting and loving France," and learning the French language. He added, "If you live in Fran
The mega-slanted Captain Comics writes about 3 trends he's tired of seeing for his Comics Buyer's Guide column. Like his Scripps-Howard newsaper column, this too is fairly sensationalized, but I'll just be commenting on the third and last in the line here, that being on resurrections in comics. He says:I don’t really have to explain this one do I? After all, most comics fans no longer believe any character is dead any more. Even if we see a body.Well in my case, I don't want them do be dead. If I did, then they wouldn't be my favorites, now would they? Yeesh.Actually, as silly as it’s become, I can live with the repeated resurrection of Jean Grey – after all, “phoenix” is in her name. Ditto Donna Troy and Hawkman, whose origins (well, some of them) posit that they are always reincarnated. But Green Arrow is a quite ordinary fellow, who was blown to tiny bits, and replaced by a successor -- but he’s back. Most of the Green Lanterns and the Guardians were quite thoroughl
