Market to stay cautious ahead of inflation data
The market is likely to turn cautious ahead of inflation data to be released for the week ended 26 April 2008 by noon today. The WPI remained above the 7%-mark (significantly above RBI`s revised target of 5.5% for the year) for the past four weeks. The recent rally in crude oil may also continue to weigh on investor sentiment. Looking Back And Looking Ahead : April 28, 2008
Mortgage markets lost ground last week on inflation concerns and a general feeling that "the worst may be over" on Wall Street.  As investors moved money into the stock market, mortgage rates ticked higher for the second straight week. The biggest story from last week was the rising cost of gasoline.  Rising energy costs combined with rising food prices are creating worries about the American consumer's ability to spur the economy forward. That sets up the biggest story of this week -- the Federal Open Market Committee meeting. The FOMC starts a 2-day meeting Tuesday and is widely expected to lower the Fed Funds Rate by 0.250 percent at its adjournment.  Cuts to the Fed Funds Rate are meant to promote growth in the economy by decreasing borrowing costs for

Why Christians Should Go Ahead and Be Pagan
The relationship and dependence of the early chapters of Genesis on ancient Near Eastern myth raise the question of whether these chapters can themselves be designated as myths. The problem is compounded by the controversial issue of the definition of myth.--John S. Kselman, HarperCollins Bible Commentary, p. 84But if that which tends to make us happier and better can be called useful, then we claim that epithet for [mythology]. For Mythology is the handmaid of literature; and literature is one of the best allies of virtue and promoters of of happiness.--Thomas Bulfinch, Bulfinch's Mythology, prefaceA concerned reader writes,I note that one of your interests seems to be the use of myth and mythology in fiction and popular culture. Ahead Of The Fed - Rally Or Fade?
On last Wednesday's post, I said that "...there is a possibility that more downside is ahead..." because I thought that the PowerShares QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: QQQQ) would pull back a little before attacking the $47-48 resistance channel. Apparently, there was enough bullishness that a pullback could not develop. My technical indicators tell me that the market is moderately overbought. So we could pullback, or the stock market could continue to rally to $48 (or even $49) and reach extreme overbought conditions. With the amount bullishness that this market has shown, I would not be surprised to see the stock market rally ahead of the FOMC announcement and then sell off on the news. This week should be interesting...Good luck and see you Wednesday.

Buy Microsoft and Apple Ahead of Earnings
Microsoft (MSFT) reports earnings on Thursday and here is why it is a buy. First, as mentioned in my post a few weeks back, Microsoft lost more in market cap than was justified by the Yahoo offer. The stock has since, recovered more than 10%. IBM, Intel and HPQ, all reported good quarters, indicating strong PC growth. This bodes very well for Microsoft and should lead to a record quarter following the two previous successive blow-out quarters when they grew earnings 100% and 40%. If you don't already own it, consider buying it here.Apple (AAPL) reports earnings on Wednesday and again, the same IBM, Intel and HPQ theme applies. With Apple, there are some moving parts to consider. First, Mac sales could come in a lot higer and every percentage gain over Dell or Hewlett-Packard means big numb

      Bracing for tougher times ahead
Business Times - 23 Apr 2008 Bracing for tougher times ahead ECONOMISTS read in the Monetary Authority of Singapore's (MAS) surprise decision two weeks ago to strengthen the Sing dollar an indication that inflationary concerns loomed large over downside growth risks, even as the global outlook grows cloudy with recession in the air. While the Singapore economy got off to a robust start (though the final first-quarter growth may well be revised down from the 7.2 per cent flash estimate), gross domestic product (GDP) growth is widely expected to ease in the months ahead. The big question is - by how much, as the US economic downturn winds its way to Singapore and the rest of Asia. For now, the prognosis remains an optimistic 'minimal hit' scenario with regional resilience and demand expected

Torres seems to be talking more about this semi final than his own team's. Surely, Manchester United-Barcelona is a footballing extravaganza that no football crazy would like to miss. It is hence, not an understatement nor an offense to the remaining teams (Chelsea and Liverpool), when people say this match is as good as a final. Both United and Barcelona play this beautiful game the way it ought to be played, with the flair attacking style. Both teams consist of the finest footballing talents in the world. No wonder footballing pundits are sitting on the fence on this one. Here is my recipe for getting ahead...
Okay, this will seem a little long winded, but it is my basic recipe that brought us to the ability to start paying down bills.1. You have to be in control of your finances, by this I mean you really need to know where every cent of your monthly income is going out. Some people use envelopes of cash to budget, etc. I found just a simple spreadsheet works as long as you are truthful to yourself. You can't track your money if you aren't honest to yourself. If you don't have excel and want a free option, download openoffice, it is a great free equivilant to MS Office. Now, you need to show all of your incoming and outgoing monies, get everything in there. Now you can see where your hard earned cash is going. On another sheet, put down a list of all of your debts, including balances, ra

Could Present Surge in Stocks Signal a Rebound Ahead
It’s earnings season again. But with an odd twist. You see, most investors realized that earnings season would be dismal; so when the results came in (pretty much) as expected, many investors seemed to find that the news (especially among financials) was not worse and went on a buying spree. By watching the trading "tape," you almost could "hear" what investors were thinking: JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) announces a 50% decline in first-quarter profits, and says markets will remain weak through the rest of this year and perhaps into next: No problem. As bad as the results were, they were actually better than Wall Street expected.Citigroup Inc. (C) says it lost $5.1 billion on a 48% decline in revenue and will slash 9,000 jobs - that’s great! Looking Back And Looking Ahead : April 21, 2008
The S&P 500 added 4.3 percent last week -- more than during all of 2007 -- in what was a good week for the economy and a bad week for mortgage rate shoppers.  After Friday's close, mortgage rates were higher by as much as 0.375% versus the Friday prior.  This reversed a trend of falling rates for Americans. In recent weeks, mortgage rates had been falling as investors fled risky stocks and parked their money in the bond markets.  A trading pattern such as this one is sometimes called "Flight to Quality" and it creates a high demand for all types of bonds.  When bond demand is high, bond prices increase and that drives bonds' relative rates of return down.  Over this past week, however, the Flight to Quality unwound.  Investors saw opportunities f

Kitchens - Go Ahead and Vent!
At KBIS, I took a 1/2 day sort of refresher course on venting. There is not a whole lot new in venting concepts, but, it did reinforce and remind me of the "ick" factor, which I'll explain. Here's what's happening. First, our kitchen floor plans are more OPEN to other rooms. This means that pollutants from cooking have more opportunity to freely move about your home, hanging out in your furnishings, your artwork, your pillows, walls, flooring, you get the idea. Just as an fyi, grease from cooking turns into vapor and floats in the air as particles for as long as 72 hours!ADD TO THAT, the tighter construction of newer homes, which can encourage mold growth and trap pollutants, and your health becomes at risk for allergies, asthma, lung disea

Hansbrough will likely be back and Lawson's stock is down. Even if Lawson bolts injured PG Bobby Frasor is back and Danny Green is a very capable player as well.
