Eating healthy food may now be literally unaffordable for millions of Americans. In the first study of its kind, researchers looked at the cost of foods that are rich in nutrients and low in calories. They found that the prices of healthy foods had soared over a two-year period, increasing by nearly 20 percent, compared to a 5 percent overall increase in general food prices. During the same period, high-calorie foods remained about the same price, or, in some cases, actually dropped. It is likely that many who understand the importance of weight control would like to eat right, but opt for cheaper foods instead.
