A short apology for my absence from the blog over the last 10 days or so which has been caused by a mixture of work pressures and family pressures - it’s one of those times when you wish that you had a few posts already written which you can schedule in on occasions such as this. It’s a catchy sound bite and a highly successful meme, but it is utterly false. Absence of evidence most certainly is evidence of absence. My return to Beijing this week after about 18 months was another reminder of just how quickly things change… and my visit to Tianjin provided a glimpse of just how much change is left to be seen. Neil Cole, author of Organic Church and founder of Church Multiplication Associates, shared his perspective with me yesterday on the absence of movements in America. He observes that the church often gets in the way. The problem stems from consumer Christians who are willing to sit and soak and let the pastor serve them, instead of getting involved themselves. He asserts, “People in the pews are irresponsible, and pastors let them stay that way.” Codependent pastors allow dysfunctional churches to exist. I’ve been thinking about the absence of missional leaders. I believe that there is a direct connection to the training pastors receive in seminary. I am so grateful for my seminary experience – however, it lacked any significant training to fulfill the mission of the church. I love that I was taught how to study God’s Word, to defend God’s Word and to teach God’s Word. I really enjoyed my systematic theology classes. I learned a lot in my church history and homiletics classes, too. However, as I reflect on my training, I had only one class on mission and evangelism. That was the only class that addressed the mission of the church. That’s the only class that attempted to equip me to equip others to fulfill Jesus’ mission for the church. Pat Riley has announced that he will be taking an indefinite leave of absence, appointing assistant coach Ron Rothstein to fill-in.Riley's leave is due to an ongoing hip and knee problem that has left him in continuous pain throughout the season.
