But that act met the veto of Democratic Governor Kathleen Sebelius, a practicing Roman Catholic. The Kansas State Legislature tried to override the veto, but the state Senate’s attempt failed by merely two votes. In response, Archbishop [...]

TheValuesVoter, the author of the post which I critiqued a while back, has posted several comments on this blog. One is the series of statistics I had mentioned in that critique. These stats continue to uphold my assertion that black people in America find themselves in the situations that cause people to want abortions more frequently than whites or other groups do. This accounts, I would argue, for the imbalance in abortion rates between communities - not some plan to slow the growth of the black population or some ill-defined idea of 'coercion' that TVV sometimes talks about. I'd like to take an opportunity to talk about another of TVV's posts on the subject, one comparing the unacknowledged personhood of slaves to the unacknowledged personhood of fetuses/embryos/whatever word you w

Well we cannot and should not ride the fence. I'm not telling anyone to think like me (you all know my viewpoint) so instead I encourage you to educate yourself on the issue and then make a decision: Pro-Life or Pro-Choice.First of all, pro-choice is a position that favors the mother. You take the baby out of the equation and just focus on, "The woman has a freedom to make her own choice."And pro-life is the position that favors both mother and baby. You understand that there is a life, abortion is murder, and that the woman will suffer extreme emotional distre

Abortion may never be considered a "right."
In his Encyclical Letter Evangelium Vitae, Nos. 68-73, Pope John Paul II reminded us that:"One of the specific characteristics of present-day attacks on human life-as has already been said several times-consists in the trend to demand a legal justification for them, as if they were rights which the State, at least under certain conditions, must acknowledge as belonging to citizens. Consequently, there is a tendency to claim that it should be possible to exercise these rights with the safe and free assistance of doctors and medical personnel. It is often claimed that the life of an unborn child or a seriously disabled person is only a relative good: according to a proportionalist approach, or one of sheer calculation, this good should be compared with and balanced against other goods. It is even maintained that only someone present and personally involved in a concrete situation can correctly judge the goods at stake: consequently, only that person would be able to decide on the morality

What Does Court Of Criminal Appeals Ruling Mean For Legal Abortion?
A Court of Criminal Appeals ruling on fetal murder last week garnered the obligatory media attention, but few seemed to pay serious attention in part, I suspect, because the AP story and every other coverage included an interesting tidbit in the lead graf or somewhere pretty close to the top: Texas laws allow the killing of a fetus to be prosecuted as murder, regardless of the fetus’ stage of development, but they do not apply to abortions, the state’s highest criminal court has ruled. [Emphasis mine.] Is this, however, disinformation? The folks at Dungeon Diary seem to think so: Though this was about a criminal case, abortion foes will seize this as legal precedent to begin pressing for criminal prosecutions of doctors offering abortions. Just wait for the dust to settle. I doubt that these same folks who have decried “Activist Judges” will have little but praise for this decision. I’ll admit, I had similar thoughts. I felt that this decision would be

Democrats Clinton, Obama and Edwards Demand Pro-Abortion Judges
Just in case anyone out there wondered where they stood, all possible Democrat candidates for President of the United States said that they would only appoint pro-abortion Supreme Court judges if elected President.Doesn't sound very diverse from a party who seems to put "diversity" above anything else. Nope, they receive a free pass from the media in discriminating against certain people on this issue. Sure, they'll remove freedom of choice from businesses by demanding they hire a certain number of people only based on specific race or a gender in the name of diversity, but when it comes to your belief on whether a mother can kill her child, they insist you share their sick view. I've heard the rare Christian Democrat defend the party by saying that not every Democrat is pro-abortion. True, while about ninety percent of elected Democrats are pro-abortion, there are about ten percent who are pro-life or who have voted positively on some sort of pro-life bill. But let's be honest, De

Mike Huckabee took a die hard conservative stance to separate himself from other candidates on the issue of abortion and more on November 18 with Fox News. It's the logic of the Civil War," Huckabee said comparing abortion rights to slavery. "If morality is the point here, and if it's right or wrong, not just a political question, then you can't have 50 different versions of what's right and what's wrong. For those of us for whom this is a moral question, you can't simply have 50 different versions of what's right," he said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday."Huckabee said he was taken aback by the National Right to Life Committee's recent endorsement of Fred Thompson. "Fred's never had a 100 percent record on right to life in his Senate career. The records reflect that. And he doesn't support the human life amendment which is most amazing because that's been a part of the Republican platform since 1980," he said. The media has been riding the "value voters aren't happy"

Congress to Debate Defunding Abortion Clinics
Congress will soon be debating two bills, Title X Family Planning Act (S.351) and Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act (H.R. 4133). These bills would all but end federal funding of abortions by non hospitals with some exceptions. As much as I am opposed to abortion I am equally or maybe even more opposed to paying for someone else’s abortions. The National Right to Life is urging congress to pass at least one of these bills. “Taxpayer funds should not be given to organizations that are the backbone of the abortion industry, such as Planned Parenthood,” said Douglas Johnson, legislative director of National Right to Life. “These bills do not call for a reduction in family planning funding, rather they prevent abortion providers from receiving tax dollars,” Johnson added.  There is no excuse in today’s day and age for anyone who doesn’t want to get pregnant getting pregnant. Some Abortion Debate Facts
There are two major sides to every argument, and when we are talking about abortion debate facts, it is no different. Pro-Choice is a term used for those who are essentially pro-abortion. There are many levels of Pro-Choice activism, including those people who would not choose to have an abortion themselves, but do think that the expectant mother has a right to choose what happens to her own body. The major question that Pro-Choice advocates address is the question of women's rights. They believe that a woman has the right to choose whether or not she gives birth. Pro-Choice advocates are in favor or abortion being available on demand, and usually, at any time during the pregnancy. This is especially true when it comes to therapeutic abortion, or abortion in cases of rape or incest. Pro-Life is a term used to describe those people who are basically against abortion. When discussing abortion debate facts, it is important to remember that there are many levels to this side as well.

The Deadly Consequence of Abortion Bans
When conservatives advocate outlawing abortion many are reminded of the tragedy of shirt hanger abortions and the damage they caused to women. AP provides an example of a death in response to a law in Nicaragua which bans abortions. Keep in mind that some conservatives here advocate a ban which would not allow exceptions to save the life of the mother: Two weeks after Olga Reyes danced at her wedding, her bloated and disfigured body was laid to rest in an open coffin — the victim, her husband and some experts say, of Nicaragua’s new no-exceptions ban on abortion. Reyes, a 22-year-old law student, suffered an ectopic pregnancy. The fetus develops outside the uterus, cannot survive and causes bleeding that endangers the mother. But doctors seemed afraid to treat her because of the anti-abortion law, said husband Agustin Perez. By the time they took action, it was too late. Nicaragua last year became one of 35 countries that ban all abortions, even to save the life of the mother, acco

What Are Some Methods Of Abortion?
Generally speaking, there are three major methods of abortion: Spontaneous, Induced, and Herbal. In addition, you can also consider self-inflicted abortion as a method, but as this is not popular and not necessary in modern times, I do not consider it as one of the major methods of abortion. Self-inflicted abortion is often done with a sharp object, often a coat hanger, which is inserted by the expectant mother into her own cervix. This is extremely dangerous, not reliable and sometimes even deadly. Herbal abortion is the oldest of the methods of abortion. Like self-inflicted abortion, Herbal abortion is not very safe, and often does not produce any effect other than a very sick pregnant woman. Many different herbs have been used over the hundreds of years people have been using this method of abortion, including tansy, pennyroyal, black cohosh, silphium - which is now extinct - birthwort, and even herbs that modern people use daily: dill, marjoram, thyme, parsley, lavender, and junipe

One of today’s most controversial topics, the abortion debate pits the rights of a mother against the rights of a fetus. The most common, clear-cut stances on the issue are “pro-choice” and “pro-life,” which hinge on legal and moral considerations. Another common viewpoint is a more blended pragmatist view, which states that abortion should be prohibited except for specific cases. "Pro-choice"

Fred Thompson Takes A Surprising Stance On Abortion and Marriage
In a recent interview with Tim Russert on Meet The Press, Thompson came out with more of a Libertarian view on social issues such abortion and marriage than that of a socially conservative Republican."People ought to be free, at state and local levels, to make decisions even Fred Thompson disagrees with,” he said. “That's what freedom is about."This aligns him to essentially the same position as GOP hopeful Ron Paul. Dr. Paul also has a strong voting record on pro-life measures and believes that marriage is between a man and woman. However he also feels that this an issue is that is better left up to individual states and that it is not an issue of the federal constitution. It also aligns him with a similar position of GOP hopeful Rudy Giuliani who has been slammed constantly by conservatives for his social views. Baby Survives Two Abortion Attempts and is Born Healthy
This story is disturbing to me, but the end result was a good one. I could never even try to understand the decision that these parents had to make. Most readers here know that I am pro-life and believe abortion is wrong. I also believe that Roe vs Wade should be overturned as this would not outlaw abortion. This would simply send abortion back to the states and the individual states could then decide on whether to allow abortion or not.  This is the story of an expecting mother of twins whom the doctors told that one of her babies was unhealthy and would die in the womb of a heart attack. They also told her that if the one baby died it could kill the other one. Mrs Jones said: “They told us that if he died, it could be life threatening for his brother. “We had to decide whether to end his life and let his brother live, or risk them both.” They said it would be impossible to keep him alive afterwards as he was so poorly. It would be kinder to let him die in the wom

Abortion as a form of birth control
A very divisive and sensitive issue for many, deciding to have an abortion can be very hard. An abortion is a way to end an unnecessary or unwanted pregnancy. The common of abortions occur throughout the first 12-weeks of a pregnancy. Those that happen later in a pregnancy are most frequently for medical causes. Abortions are not destined to be used as a normal form of birth control. If someone is having sex and do not want to get pregnant, use a dependable form of contraceptives. If it is vital for one to avoid a pregnancy, remaining ascetic is the best way to do this. Types of abortions: 1. Medication -The first dose of medicine works by blocking the body's production of progesterone that is needed to help keep the uterine lining appropriate for the embryo. Lacking the progesterone, the uterine lining thins and the pregnancy is ended. The next step in a medical abortion is to take one more dose of medication that will cause uterine contractions thereby forcing the body to expel

Giuliani Found Distorting Truth on Abortion and Health Care
Rudy Giuliani has a hard time sticking to the truth. I’ve had posts fact-checking Giuliani many times before, and there are two new  reports this week showing how Giuliani has twisted the truth on health care and abortion. The Los Angeles Times reports on Giuliani’s twisting of the facts on abortion and adoptions: Striving to find the “middle ground” on abortion — that is, coming up with ways acceptable to pro-choice and pro-life Americans alike to reduce the number of abortions in the United States — is a worthwhile undertaking. But it also has given rise to some fairly resilient myths about the best way to achieve this goal. Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani prominently featured one such myth in his speech Oct. 20 to a group of social conservatives. The former New York City mayor stated that “we increased adoption by 133% over the eight years before I came into office. And we found that abortions went down by 18% during that pe

      Pro Abortion Is Pro-Choice
In the war between those who are pro abortion, or Pro-Choice, and those who are anti abortion, or Pro-Life, the most important thing to remember is that not everyone who is pro abortion is against having children. On the contrary, there are many pro abortion people who would not have an abortion themselves, but consider themselves Pro-Choice because they believe that every woman has the right to choose for herself whether or not she gives birth. Pro abortion or Pro-Choice people are primarily concerned with women's rights. The major question about abortion that they consider when arguing for abortion rights is "does a woman have the right to choose what happens to her own body?" Overwhelmingly, their belief is yes. The primary issues that pro abortion people concentrate on - aside from the woman's right to choose - are the effect on the crime rate and back-alley abortions. Economists have studied the crime rate in the United States for decades. But the most interes

Abortion, guilt and the hand of God
There has been a lot on the news recently about the UK abortion act and the pressure to reform it.Naturally the spokesmen (and they are all men) from the Catholic Church are absolutely against abortion - life starts at conception and killing (especially of an innocent) is a sin, so their position is clear and logical. However it seems to me that they don't follow their logic to its end. The creation of a new life is not, from the point of view of their theology, simply the consequence of copulation and nature taking its course. A new being, a soul, has been brought into being so the new life has involved two people and God. Every conception, no matter how unwanted (after a rape for instance), no matter how life threatening to the mother, has been deliberately brought about not by the copulation but the infusing of a soul into the womb. I guess even Catholic theologians have to accept that copulation increases the likelihood of pregnancy but from their perspective this really only p

History of Abortion - What Is the History of Abortion?
Abortion is not a new concept. In fact, abortion has been around for hundreds of years. The history of abortion begins with the ancient Greeks and Romans, and, of course, continues even today. Early abortions were performed in rather frightening and unscientific ways. These ways primarily dealt with herbs - dubbed "abortifacient" - sharp objects, and even by placing severe pressure on the expectant mother's abdomen. Abortifacient herbs were used for hundreds of years, and some people still use them today, although this is not recommended because of the possibility of physical danger to the woman. These herbs were also not guaranteed to work, and sometimes the user would get ill, but the herbs would fail to cause an abortion. In the 11th century, a missal on herbal remedies was written, and in it were listed the herbs that can cause abortion; thus the beginning of abortifacient herbs in the history of abortion. Herbs listed in this book were black and white hellbore, penn

Abortion Facts Abortion Facts, Not Fiction
When it comes to abortion facts, it is often very difficult to determine what information is true and what is false. Real abortion facts begin with the medical community. In medical terminology, abortion is serrated into different categories: Spontaneous Abortion and Induced Abortion. Spontaneous Abortion, or miscarriage, as it is commonly called, is the natural expulsion of the embryo or fetus from the uterus by the mother's body. This can happen because of genetic or physical abnormalities. Induced abortion is further separated into the sub-categories Therapeutic Abortion and Elective Abortion. Therapeutic Abortion is exactly what it sounds like: the extraction of an embryo or fetus for medical reasons to prevent harm from coming to the mother, or in cases of diagnosed deformities or problems with the unborn child. Elective Abortion is what is commonly debated. It is the choice of the expectant mother for any number of personal reasons. There are numerous methods of abortion, in

      Pro-Life: Against Abortion
The term "Pro-Life" is central to the debate of the validity of abortion. Pro-Lifers are generally against all types of Induced Abortion, both Therapeutic Abortion and Elective Abortion. They feel that human life begins at conception, and that every stage of this life, from embryo to fetus to newborn, has a right to life. People who are against abortion believe that more growth and change in physicality occurs in the gestational period before birth than occurs throughout the rest of a person's life. Within the first three weeks, basic biological set up for the brain, spinal cord and nervous system begin to develop and the heart begins to beat. In the next few weeks, the baby forms limbs, lungs, eyes, musculature, and eventually begins to move. At five months, the mother can feel the baby kick; at six months, the baby can hear; at seven months, the baby's eyes open and it can see. They are also against abortion because they believe it can be painful for the baby. Wit

Abortion Issues: Social Concerns And Debates
Abortion issues stem from a variety of concerns. There are two major questions at the heart of all abortion debate: the question Pro-Life advocates - or those opposing abortion - concentrate on is, "When does life begin?" This is central issue of their argument against abortion. Pro-Lifers believe that life begins at conception and therefore abortion should be considered murder. Pro-Choice advocates - or those who support abortion - are concerned with the question, "Do women have the right to choose whether or not they have an abortion?" Pro-Choice advocates believe that abortion is a women's rights issue and that all women should be free to choose what happens to her body. This debate is incredibly fierce because of the political, social, and moral implications of abortion. Religious Right leaders tend to be Pro-Life, while Feminists tend to be Pro-Choice. But there are many, many exceptions to this statement. In fact, most people fall somewhere in the middl

Well you are inconveinant to me right now so what if I come abort you? Cause it's "just" you and there are more people involved in the world. Study Shows Abortion is the Best Predictor of Breast Cancer
The government has been slowly but surely been regulating and banning certain behaviors and habits that they deem risky. We could go through the list again of everything that has either been banned, taxed, or regulated all in the name of looking out for us because we can’t look out for ourselves, but I am going to refrain from doing that yet again. However, I will use smoking for the sake of my next argument. Smoking can lead to cancer along with other diseases, I wont argue that. We are also told that just standing next to someone who is smoking can also cause cancer. Second hand smoke has never been proven to cause cancer, there are many studies that show no increased risk of cancer from second hand smoke, yet smokers are looked upon as lepers.  So certain politically incorrect behaviors are allowed to be frowned upon, regulated and taxed because, as in the case of smoking, they can cause cancer. But one of the leading predictors of cancer is a politically correct behavior,

What Are Some Facts About Abortion?
In order to keep the facts about abortion straight, the medical field provides specific terminology for the processes of abortion. Abortion is separated into two categories: spontaneous abortion and induced abortion. Spontaneous Abortion is more commonly referred to as miscarriage. A Spontaneous Abortion happens when trauma occurs and accidentally affects the embryo or fetus, causing the mother's body to expel it. This is due to natural causes such as genetic problems or disease. The second category, Induced Abortion, is further separated into two sub-categories: Therapeutic Abortion and Elective Abortion. Therapeutic Abortion is done only to benefit the health of the mother. There are many different reasons that this might be an option for an expectant mother. Some women opt to terminate a pregnancy when the fetus has been found to have a congenital defect that would greatly hinder its development or even end in imminent death. Anti Abortion: What It Means To Be Pro-Life
Anti Abortion people are commonly referred to as "Pro-Life". This nickname has to do with their belief that life begins at conception. Since those who are anti abortion believe that life begins at conception, they feel that abortion is essentially murder and should not be legal for any reason. However, as with any other heated political debate that has religious and moral implications, there is a lot of "gray area" between Pro-Life and Pro-Choice. For example, some people consider themselves Pro-Life, but are in favor of abortion if the pregnancy endangers the mother. Christians often are anti abortion. These people draw on messages in the Bible to back their Pro-Life arguments. Certain books of the Bible, like Luke and Jeremiah, claim that God knows all souls before they are born. They interpret this to mean that if God knows someone before birth, then that person is alive the moment he or she is conceived. Anti abortionists also believe that the most a person will

      What Is An Abortion Pill?
An abortion pill is defined by the dictionary as, "a drug taken orally to induce abortion, especially early in pregnancy." The term "abortion pill" commonly refers to the drug Mifeprex, an abortifacient made up of the combination of two FDA approved medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. This abortion pill works during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy to cause a chemically induced miscarriage. Mifepristone is also known as RU-486 and was developed in France. The drug works by blocking progesterone, a hormone that helps maintain pregnancy. If this hormone is not present, the uterus will begin to shed the lining, dependant on the woman, sometimes bleeding will occur. Mifepristone is taken orally in an abortion clinic. After this drug is taken, the clinic will provide a second drug called misoprostol. Misoprostol is taken between 24 and 72 hours after Mifepristone has been taken. Misoprostol causes the uterus to contact, thus causing a miscarriage. Many women prefer

Senator Sam Brownback Introduces a Bill That would Require an Ultrasound Before an Abortion
Senator and presidential hopeful Sam Brownback has introduced a bill that would require doctors to take an ultrasound and show it to the would be mother before she has an abortion. This is something that has been signed into law in Georgia earlier this year, and now Brownback is proposing it on a national level.   This was part of Senator Brownback’s statement: “We can reduce the number of abortions and help people reflect on the humanity of the unborn child by providing more information to women,”   Therein lies the problem, however, with this bill. The left wants to protect abortion at all costs, they are not interested with reducing the number of abortions. They see reducing the number of abortions as an attack on the woman’s right to choose. If there is a chance more woman will use the right to choose to choose life instead of death, and this reduces abortions, it will be considered an attack on abortions from within. How to Deal with Teenage Pregnancy - Abortion and the Choice to Terminate a Pregnancy
The discovery of being pregnant can be a very traumatic event for a teen. There are a variety of options available to a young girl in this situation, each with its own emotional consequences. One option which many pregnant adolescents choose with a heavy heart is the termination of their teenage pregnancy. Abortions cause many teens to suffer in silence, often alone and ashamed of sharing their choice with others. Adults must make sure that a pregnant teen is not pressured into choosing an abortion and that she receives all the necessary emotional support when terminating her teenage pregnancy. Abortion consists of ending a pregnancy before the unborn child can live outside the mother. An abortion can be either spontaneous, called a miscarriage, or it can be deliberate (induced). Before 1973, induced abortions were illegal; the case of Roe vs. Wade, however, forced the Supreme Court to confirm a woman's right to choose to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. "House" Sees Abortion For What It Is
Fox's hit show "House M.D." has been one I watch on increasing occasion. I have to be in the right mood to watch Hugh Laurie portray the clinically brilliant yet cynical Dr. House, but when I am the show is usually very intriguing and entertaining. This past Thursday night I wasn't particularly in the mood to watch but something kept me watching despite what I thought was only an average beginning for the show. The show typically begins with a short scene that sets up the medical mystery Dr. House will attempt to solve. In this case a woman appeared to have a stroke while taking pictures at a photo shoot. Though that didn't seem terribly mysterious or interesting to me at the time, I did not turn the channel. As the show developed I realized that I had to see how it ended.
