Yusril Ihza Mahendra, a former key aide of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has said he is ready to run for the 2009 presidential election. "I have been ready to become a presidential candidate since long time ago, and prepared for competition with other candidates in the upcoming elections," Yusril was quoted Friday by major national newspaper Kompas as saying. The 52-year-old, the founding figure of the Muslim-based Crescent Star Party (PBB), was dismissed from the cabinet last year amid graft probe into the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights that he led in 2001-2004. He has largely withdrawn from politics and recently played a leading role in the making of the Admiral Cheng Ho movie, which hit cinemas this year.Indonesia News Blog:

Di Thailand Yusril syuting untuk film TV Laksamana Cheng Ho yang produksinya, antara lain, ditangani oleh Kantana Ltd, salah satu perusahaan film raksasa di Thailand. Dalam film tersebut, Yusril menjadi pemeran utama, yakni memerankan Laksamana Cheng Ho. Dalam literatur Laksamana ini dikenal dalam tiga nama, yaitu Cheng Ho, Zheng He dan Sam Po Toa Lang. Toa Lang dalam dialek Fukien berarti orang besar. Ide membuat film tersebut, salah satunya, memang datang dari Yusril. Menurut Yusril, ide itu muncul saat dirinya masih menjadi menteri sekretaris negara (Mensesneg). “Banyak respons dan yang berminat untuk membuat film itu bersama Kantana,” kata Ketua Majelis Syura DPP Partai Bulang Bintang tersebut. House of Representatives will summon State Secretary Yusril Ihza Mahendra and Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Taufiequrrachman Ruki over their disputes after Yusril was questioned on a graft case.Yusril last Friday visited KPK headquarters, conveying documents about direct appointment of tapping equipments used in the anti-corruption body. He demanded that KPK question its chief over the process which was allegedly violated existingregulations.Yusril's move came after KPK investigators questioned him over allegedly mark-up during the procurements of the Automatic Identification Fingerprints System (AFIS) by the Justice andHuman Rights Ministry occurred when Yusril still led it.
Minister/State Secretary Yusril Ihza Mahendra said he was ready to face any risk including a dismissal in connection with direct appointment and mark-up allegations on him when he was law and human rights minister. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is of the opinion that there is a basic difference between the direct appointment process carried out by the KPK and what was done by the Justice and Human Rights Department when Yusril Ihza Mahendra was in charge."KPK is brave enough to be responsible for this," said Johan Budi, KPK spokesperson, yesterday (17/2).On Thursday (15/2), the KPK asked Yusril for a tatement regarding the direct appointment of fingerprint detection devices worth Rp16 billion which he approved.
