      Trail Recommendation: Indian Rock, Yosemite
Tranquil Start (Mirror Lake)Typically, I travel alone. Although I find the solitude of nature restorative, I'm often out alone simply because the irresistible longing to be submersed in the wild comes upon me so suddenly (that, and most of my friends aren't stupid enough to join me).My last trip to Yosemite, however, I went with one of my buddies and his whole family: a wife and three girls. It's great to get a chance to share Yosemite, to pass it on to others and encourage others to love the wilderness and creation as I do (after all, that's what Burner Photography's about). That being said, I'm a creature of solitude and reflection, so the day after a "long" hike with the whole family, (up to Vernal Falls and back) they stayed at camp and recovered and I charged headlong into the wildern

      Ansel Adams's Yosemite
NyTimes.com has a very cool interactive tour of some of Ansel Adams work. You can hear the backstory on the photographer's iconic images from his former assistant Andrea G. Stillman, development director of the Morgan Library & Museum. This is a very cool interactive display from the New York Times, and you get to hear a lot of background information about each of the photos.NyTimes

Farberware Classic Yosemite Stainless Steel Percolator for only $19.99
If you grew up in the 1940's and 1950's, it's more likely you saw a coffee percolator like this one on your parents' stovetop. The origins of the percolator go back to about 1818 in France. Prior to that, coffee was made in vacuum pots or was boiled. By the middle to late 1800's travelers immigrating to the United States from Europe brought these percolators with them. Many of these pots made coffee for families that used wood stoves on their journey westward.

      Saving Money in Yosemite Valley
We just got back from a week-long vacation in Yosemite Valley. It was great. We stayed in a tent cabin in Curry Village. A tent cabin is an Army-style tent made of Dacron, pulled over a wood cabin frame. They have a wood plank floor. Inside are metal-framed beds with regular spring mattresses. Our cabin was [...]

      "Yosemite" by Benjamin Burner
My coffee table book is in full swing. I've made it to page twelve. I'm still working through the layout though. The text to the right of this two page spread reads: Yosemite is neither rocks nor trees nor waterfalls. It is a living, breathing entity described but not encompassed by its features. Yosemite has a soul, a spirit, moods, and a personality. And we must build a relationship with Yosemite to truly understand her. Using her resources and objectifying her landmarks will leave us only with a flat, photograph of the essence of her beauty.

The Snow Set -- Yosemite Falls Trail
The IsolationWith a 2,700 ft. elevation gain, the Yosemite Falls trail is challenging even when not covered in snow and ice. In February, when I hiked this trail, the snow was very deep and part of the trail hadn't been traveled on since the last big snow, making it extremely easy to get lost. The dark appearance of this photo is a combination of fog and an intermittent, light snow. The cold, the snow, and the lack of crowds gave a thrilling sense of isolation. Perhaps isolation's not really the right word. I don't feel alone in these situations, I feel alone with nature. The feeling was only heightened later when the tracks of others disappeared, and I trail blazed through virgin snow. The Snow Set of PhotographsI have always viewed the following photographs as a set. I even arranged them

      Yosemite Valley Floor
We attended a banquet in Fresno last October. The day after the event our friends drove us to Yosemite which I had never seen. It is a beautiful area and we had a great time. We saw the views from above and then the views from the valley floor. One spectacular view is shown here. It is from the Ahwahnee Hotel looking up at the mountain behind it. The mountain is actually much taller but I slightly shortened it to fit the painting space. 11" x 14", ink and watercolor.

      Yosemite in Winter
Yosemite is the Temple of God. There’s an essence in the land that breaths life into the body. Most people choose to visit the valley in the spring, summer, or fall, but my favorite time to visit is unquestionably winter. When the valley’s covered in snow, the crowds thin out, and I feel alone. One small man isolated by snow and watched over by the grey giants who have stood sentinel over the valley for millennia. One snowy February, I parked my car in an empty lot, slung my new snowshoes over my back, and headed out on the John Muir Trail as it follows the Merced up to Little Yosemite Valley. I passed ten or twelve people on the first mile of the trail, and then, as the trail climbed sharply to hurtle Vernal Falls and the ground became covered in deep snow, I was suddenly and comp

Visit Yosemite National Park in your California Vacation
By: Elmo Kandel Yosemite National Park is one of the most beautiful natural parks in the United States. With its abundance of diverse sights, from the impressive granite cliffs, to the spectacular waterfalls, there's nature at her best everywhere you look. One of the best known must see features of Yosemite National Park is Glacier Point. This isn't open year round, but usually between June and November you can guarantee access up to enjoy the magnificent views from the top. There are many waterfalls in the park, with Yosemite Falls being the highest at just under 2,500 feet. The best time to see the waterfalls is early summer. Whilst some of the falls are easily accessible; others take more time and effort in order to be able to appreciate their beauty. Another popular area of Yosemite is the Yosemite Valley. This is an area full of breathtaking views - including the El Capitan Meadow, Bridalveil Meadow (with its views of Bridalveil Fall), and the Sentinal Brudge. If you're inspire

Yosemite National Park, viaje costa oeste.

      A Contemporary Family Vacation: Yosemite
Editor’s Note: This is the fourth in a series of posts from Jeff Gates, the New Media Lead Producer for the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Managing Editor for its blog, Eye Level. Jeff is on a family vacation, which sounded like a great excuse to publish his trials and tribulations from the road. You can read Jeff’s first post, second post and third post here. My iPhone and me at Half Dome. What would Samuel Morse have thought? The highlight of our my Yosemite visit is obvious. Ah, technology and the great outdoors. It couldn’t get any better. My email message documenting the event: “We are blissful at this altitude.” What more can I say? Well, my wife tells me perhaps just a bit more. We spent two days in the park. We started planning this trip back in April but that was already too late to book a room at the famous Ahwahnee Lodge in the Valley. So we spent our two nights at both the eastern and western edges of the park (in Lee Vining and Mariposa). And whil

Yosemite - Sleeping in a bag or in a hotel bed?
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK — A creature of habit, Brian Ouzounian joins a swallow-like migration each summer to this park's glacier-cleaved valley. Ouzounian has camped in Yosemite Valley in nearly every one of his 57 years, setting down stakes a week at a time with family and friends at the panoramic junction of the Merced River and Tenaya Creek. He lives for those days and the memories of them. Morning hikes to the valley rim. Inner-tube afternoons on the river. Nights in a sleeping bag, under the stars. First light striking Glacier Point. Sizzling bacon, chirping birds and the burbling river play a symphony to his soul.

      Yosemite in a Day
Sequoiadendron giganteum I’ve been to San Francisco many times, I back-packed around the US years ago on the Greyhound buses and went to many national parks in the US, but I’ve never been to Yosemite. Until last Sunday that is. People who live in San Francisco looked at me as though I was a bit mad to be doing a day trip to Yosemite – and to be fair I was a bit concerned at a 14 hour day trip myself, but it was the only day I had free so it had to be better than nothing, right? Absolutely right, this day was awesome, even the long hours in the minivan with 13 other people. It’s a really early start for me – I usually try to pretend 7am Sunday morning doesn’t exist. By the time I arrived back at 9:30 pm I was a very tired and very happy traveler. The trip to Yosemite was broken up by a caffeine stop once we got out of the urban environment, a further stop in the Central Valley to stock up on all the fresh organic produce and sandwiches for lunch, the driver’s very e

      A Happy Birthday in Yosemite
Half Dome There’s a tradition in my house that for your birthday you get to take a trip. You get to pick where and when, and the other person has to plan it. These rules aren’t hard and fast, my husband isn’t a great trip planner so I usually help him plan my trip, sometimes the choice is mutual. Usually we go for a three day weekend. I chose Cape Cod this year, the hubby went for Yosemite. His sister and her roomie flew in from New York City and we were joined by another friend. It’s hard to pick a traveler of the week from this crew. The birthday boy? The NYC duo for getting back to nature? Definitely not our nameless friend, he’s fired for being too lazy to find his own driving directions (how hard is that!?). The nominees for traveler of the week This is somewhat embarrassing to admit, but I haven’t been to Yosemite since I was a kid (and then only once). I was fairly excited about seeing Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, El Capitan and al
