Alistair Butt © 2008.An 'almost' finished oil painting of the superb Saltwick Bay on the North Yorkshire coast just below Whitby. Remaining to be done, when the under paint is tough dry, is some glazing for a soft haze (sea spray) over the lower background cliffs, plus some small work (detailing) of areas like the main wave and sand (small stones etc).It was just one of those days when the light, tide etc all combined to produce a wonderful subject... a falling tide provided some wonderful refection's on the beach and thanks to the flat shelve of rock in the bay the waves were much smaller than those just north at Whitby. As I've mentioned in a previous post about this location, this is by no means an easy one to

      Yorkshire Opens Wood Recycling Plant
Most people are more concerned about how to properly get rid of their waste and turn them into something useful. Particularly categorized in this are is of course that of the usual garbage and plastic waste we have. For Yorkshire however, feasting on the growing wood waste and turning them into something useful will be something different and a need to which people have overlooked. Speaking to letsrecycle.com on Friday, Mr Howarth said: “We are taking all grades of non-hazardous wood which we will recycle into a number of products including Biomass wood chip, horse bedding, cattle bedding and particle board. “The area was selected due to the lack of wood recycling facilities in the Yorkshire and Humber region and that much of the wood waste travels away from Yorkshire towards the particle manufacturers in the North West and North Wales,” he explained. The sky was just simple areas of colour/color blended together so as not to create any hard edges. A lot of different colour/color mixes made up the underlying element of the cliffs and in places, marker (darker or lighter) spots, were places as guides for stage two. Getting this part right makes the following stage, or stages (if required) much easier. For this painting the paint was applied almost neat out of the tubes, i.e. very little medium was added to thin the paint and the board had three coats of white Gesso primer with texture paste added to the second coating.Stage Two:Having done most of the hard work, the second stage (bottom picture) is mainly going over the whole painting adjusting colours/colors, sharpening or softening edges, defining detail etc. The under painting done in stage one really helps as at times only m

      Yorkshire fog - Holcus lanatus
I'm back from Yorkshire! Thank goodness, it was quite chilly up there indeed! I thought i'd start with a photo of a grass for my first post back.I never really took the time to stop and look at grasses. I certainly never considered that they have flowers. Being wind pollinated they don't need to be showy with big petals but their flowers can still be quite beautiful when examined close up. Yorkshire fog is one of my favourite grasses. It's quite easy to spot because its leaves are really soft and hairy and if you look at the base of the stem it usually has purple stripes or veins running vertically. They remind me of stripy pajama bottoms. The flower head also has a rather pleasant purplish tinge. It's definately going on the list of my top ten grasses of all time!

The Pennines can be seen some 40 miles away in the very far distance. I had a lovely sunny day to do the sketch but the seat on which I sat to draw Hood Hill (or "one tree hill") and the vales was so exposed and 'breezy' that I was really glad I'd taken a layered approach to dressing for plein air sketching - all five of them! This sketch was a bit of challenge in terms of how many greens in the landscape and aerial perspective blues I could get with the coloured pencils I had with me.Now if you'd like to hear more about the hill which kills caravans and HGVs which lies just below this, the lake with the odd name,

Those boots seem a little small, South Yorkshire NUJ
The National Union of Journalist's boycott of Israel has caused a stir in the blogosphere, not doubt because of many bloggers' twin aspirations towards and reliance upon journalism. Many have leapt up to defend Israeli democracy and point out the freedoms the press enjoy in other regimes - especially those surrounding Israel. It does not go without note, also, that journalist Alan Johnston was kidnapped by the same Palestinians as the NUJ wishes to promote solidarity with. This is, however, not the crux of the problem with this motion. The problem is the scope of unions and what they should be doing.Journalists, by their very nature, are involved in current affairs and politics. They may feel very strongly about the injustices in Gaza and the West Bank, or decry atrocities by the Israeli Defense Force - that is within their rights. It is also within their rights to report said injustices and atrocities, highlighting them to the world. They may even join causes to aid the Palestinian p

Andy Goldsworthy Retrospective at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Stone RoomYorkshire sandstone. Quarried by Johnson's Wellfield, Huddersfield. Dry stone construction. Carved holes. 2007.Andy Goldsworthy is a land artist. He uses natural materials to make environmentally responsible and sometimes ephemeral sculptures in the open air. A major retrospective exhibition of work by Andy Goldsworthy opened at Yorkshire Sculpture Park on 31st March and lasts until 6 January 2008. I'm hoping I can get to see this when I travel up to Yorkshire for the Art for UK Youth North exhibition later this month.According to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park this is...The largest and most ambitious project ever curated at YSP, featuring specially commissioned outdoor works, installations and never before seen archive material (YSP website)I think Goldsworthy's work is some of the most intriguing and attractive sculpture I've ever seen. I particularly enjoy the fact that he works with natural materials from the locality in which his sculptures are located, develops or

      Yorkshire neighbours
Have you ever wondered if you unwittingly live next door to the English Courtesan? Do you find yourself lying awake to ponder whether the girl next door who arrives and leaves at unusual hours could be an escort? Well if you're in Yorkshire and you have black or ginger body hair and you tend to slobber a lot and you lactate...then you just might... :-)Meet Olivia's new Yorkshire neighbours! Would anyone like to join me in raising a hearty 'moooooooo!' to welcome the new kids to the neighbourhood? One of the English Courtesan's little known party tricks is mooing like a cow - strange but true and it tends to be a useful ice-breaker in the right company (especially of the bovine variety). You can see from the photo that the new neighbours were suitably impressed (or bemused?) by Olivia's unusual talents! In the meantime, the milkmaid fantasy calls and the English Courtesan must away to find a frilly outfit and a suitable three-legged stool... :-)Technorati Tags: courtesan, courtesan

It's Raining Sugar Beet In Yorkshire
Oh No ... The Skies Falling Down ... (Or "the dangers of falling sugar beet!') As Greenhouse Girl was going to work one day, whack! A sugar beet fell from the sky and almost landed on the bonnet of her car. "Goodness gracious me!' said Greenhouse girl, "the sky must have fallen down; I must go and tell the Queen ...' Can you believe it! I know my insurance will cover another car hitting my car, but sugar beet falling from a great height I doubt!! At this time of year, up here in Yorkshire, the roads are strewn with trails of sugar beet down the edge of the roads ... and today I saw the culprit! Massive lorry, no covering on the top, merrily bounding down the road in front of me. Stuck in traffic, when he sets off in front of me "bounce' out falls sugar beet ... just missing the bonnet of the car ... as if getting to work isn't hard enough already! Hey Ho, could be worse, at least I wasn't being followed by Foxy Loxy, like poor old Chicken Licken was ...

      Next Stop Yorkshire
We've left Manchester behind and moved up the M62 to Yorkshire, home of the Arctic monkeys and the epicentre of the current English music scene. The wealth and variety of the current scene proves that there is more to Yorkshire than the Arctic Monkeys.First up.......The Last People On EarthStyle: Psychedelic / Rock / PopFrom: Yorkshire, UKBringing new meaning to the word retro The Last People On Earth are a new band from Yorkshire that sound like an old band from California. If Dulux were marketing them they'd probably be "Hint of Super Furry Animal"or "Shades of Buckley"or maybe "Blend of Flaming Lips". They also doff their cap to the Paisley Undergound of the early 80s and could therefore be the Yorkshire antidote to the Arctic Monkeys. The Last People On Earth could well be the houseband of the apocalypse. I can think of worse ways to shuffle off this mortal coil. Try them out before it's too late by downloading their single and video "Spacesuit" from their website (or by clickin

      Sunset Over The Yorkshire Moors
I am delighted to see that I received my Very First Comment today and thank you, A Reader Esquire – your encouragement is much appreciated! Here by way of thanks is a picture of sunset over the moors, taken by my own fair hand. Read on McDuff... On the tail and tale front, things are hotting up slightly and the Courtesan may soon have her first encounter of the lascivious kind. Today I received a call from C****** who wants to book me for next weekend...Ah-hah, yes, one of you clever boys has indeed managed to get hold of that much sought-after-nugget-of-gold known as Livvy’s mobile number! It’s not actually that difficult, as I am still listed on a members-only website as a ‘social and professional only escort’. That was before I realised that there really is no such thing, but after six cancellations and not a single date, I am now a wiser creature. Before C******’s call, I was actually thinking of removing my profile from that particular escort site, due the number of bac

      Yorkshire Pudding
Yorkshire pudding has been a favorite of ours for years. We generally serve it at the Christmas meal with a standing rib roast, green beans, gravy, and mashed potato. Yorkshire-Pudding batter needs to be cold. Make it a day ahead, and refrigerate.Serves: 8 Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour1 teaspoon salt6 large eggs2 1/2 cups milk 1. Sift together flour and salt. Place in bowl; make a well, and place eggs in center. Slowly whisk eggs into flour mixture until a paste forms. Gradually whisk in 1/2 cup milk.Gradually whisk in remaining 2 cups milk. Cover with plastic; chill in the refrigeratorat least 4 hours, or overnight. 2. When roast is finished, set oven at 425 degrees. When pan has been deglazed, pour 1/4 cup reserved pan drippings into roasting pan. Heat pan and drippings until very hot, about 5 minutes. Remove batter from refrigerator, and shake or whisk well; quickly pour into hot pan. Cook until crisp and golden, 20 to 30 minutes. 3. Alternate method would be to melt one

Neckline gaping at centre front posted by yorkshire lass
I frequently find that the front of woven tops and dresses gape at the centre front. There is often as much as 2 - 3 inches of loose fabric kind of sticking out from my front in the center so you can see straight down my garment. The fold of fabric runs vertically from the neckline edge at CF, and extends, depending on the pattern, to anywhere from the fullest part of the bust to about two or three inches below it. It kind of looks like a dart, in that to get rid of it you pinch out more at the top tapering to nothing at the base. Sometimes this is also accompanied by gaping down the sides of the neckline, but not always. My high bust measurement is 34, my full bust measurement is 34, and my cup size is B. The last bra I had fitted, the fitter said I was a 32B. Since then I have been making patterns for a 32 bust, with more success than before but I still get this annoying fold of fabric at CF and the garments are sometimes too tight on the back, and sometimes are OK. I have a

Tailoring a jacket on the bias posted by yorkshire lass
I must be absolutely barking mad. I have bought a pattern for a jacket which is entirely cut on the bias.  I didn't mean to, but I did. It is a Marfy with a peplum below the waist, a pocket in the seam/dart and a lapel (luckily not a notched one). I don't think I can make it on the straight grain because of the peplum, which I don't think would work on the straight grain, and also the jacket is very close fitting, presumably to allow for the stretching effect of the bias. I have found plenty of sources that tell me how to make a top or a skirt on the bias, but nothing so far on how to handle an actual tailoring project, complete with lining, stay tapes, shoulder pads, sleeve wraps, interfacing support and the rest of it. A lot of layers and things to go wrong if the bia

Wrinkley dress bodice posted by yorkshire lass
Hi I have been struggling with the fit of a vintage dress for the whole of May. After four muslins, I thought I had it fixed and made the dressclick here The result is shown in the photograph here. There are really big wrinkles running down from the mid shoulder to the armhole and if you pinch them out, they want to be kind of fish eye shaped and curvy. If you take out a nice dart from the s
