New research points to high correlation between wealth and satisfactionWe like to think money doesn’t really make that much of a difference. The intuitive truth is that it does, but we must be careful not to jump to early conclusions. In an article by David Leonhardt for the NY times titled “Maybe Money Does Buy Happiness After All” a new research by two economists from the University of Pensilvenya is discussed. I urge you to take the time and read the complete article but for the ones of you who are more pressed here are the main points of the research:The contrast between wealth and low satisfaction (demonstrated in post war Japan) was research by Richard Easterlin in 1974 and became known as the Easterlin Paradox.Mr. Easterlin also claimed relative income mattered far more than ab

I am not quite sure what to make of this. It just strikes me is quite odd that the New York Times, who once endorsed Hillary Clinton, would turn right around and scold her. After all, on January 25, 2008, the New York Times said this: This generally is the stage of a campaign when Democrats have to work hard to get excited about whichever candidate seems most likely to outlast an uninspiring pack. That is not remotely the case this year. The early primaries produced two powerful main contenders: Hillary Clinton, the brilliant if at times harsh-sounding senator from New York; and Barack Obama, the incandescent if still undefined senator from Illinois. The remaining long shot, John Edwards, has enlivened the race with his own brand of raw populism. As Democrats look ahead to t

There are several major developments under construction in what the article describes as a “once quiet fishing village on the Pacific coast of Panama,” including a gated residential community and resort being built by Nikki [...]
As much as I hate to admit it, I like the guy.....and I'll explain why. The article: Chris Matthews, Seriously. (O.K., Not That Seriously.) by MARK LEIBOVICH (via New York Times Magazine) Quote: Whenever Chris Matthews says something he likes, which happens a lot, he repeats it often and at volumes suggesting a speaker who feels insufficiently listened to at times. “Tim Russert finally reeled the big marlin into the boat tonight,” Matthews yelled — nine times, on and off the air, after a Democratic debate that Russert moderated with Brian Williams in late February at Cleveland State University. Matthews believed that Russert (the fisherman) had finally succeeded in getting Hillary Clinton (the marlin) to admit that she was wrong to vote in favor of t

As I noted a few days ago, the New York Times blog, of which I was a "regular", has put up its last post. It's definitely bittersweet for me (I can't deny there are SOME emotions to seeing the last post, since I've hung in here for close to a year!) But, somehow, I think I'll be able to work tomorrow. :)Here are the lessons that, I think, one should learn.1. Plan in advance. As far ahead as you can, as soon as you are thinking about remodeling or building a home, start the process to find a kitchen designer. Alison and Paul's (the homeowners) builder told them to wait until the kitchen had a floor. That's...I can't find the words.2. Find a kitchen designer - Take a look at this post for tips to find a kitchen designer. Allow for time up front, it may not be able to get done quickly. 3. Bef
The New York Times is no longer a credible news organization. I know I have cited references to support this conclusion in the past, but this recent example is just as conclusive. Yesterday, the latest New York Times / CBS poll of 1368 Americans was released regarding the present State of the Union. In conjunction with the data, The New York Times summarized the statistics in order to explain the...

Well now, here's a big surprise! (Well, maybe not....) The Story: Kristol Fails To Check His Sources, And So Bungles Key Fact In Anti-Obama Column (Marc Ambinder) - (via The Atlantic) Well it seems Mr. Kristol used one of the worst news sources.... NewsMax! Ugh... No wonder. Anyhow, here's the fudged fact: But Ronald Kessler, a journalist who has written about Wright’s ministry, claims that Obama was in fact in the pews at Trinity last July 22. That’s when Wright blamed the “arrogance” of the “United States of White America” for much of the world’s suffering, especially the oppression of blacks. In any case, given the apparent frequency of such statements in Wright’s preaching and their centrality to his worldview, the pretense that o

Asked if he would divulge what they talked about, Mr. Obama smiled and simply said, “No.”It’s been awhile since Mr. Gore’s name has come up in the context of the prolonged Democratic presidential contest. While people close to the former vice president say he has been following the race closely, he has given no signals that he is willing to step into the battle between Mr. Obama and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. And how about John Edwards?"

In a detailed expose set to run in Friday's paper, The New York Times tells the story of now-bankrupt Dunmore Homes, which built throughout California's Central Valley for decades. Before selling his company to an investor last year, Sidney Dunmore was also one of the state's most respected homebuilders, who built a solid home and was active in building industry associations. But as the market slowed, over-leveraged bets began to unravel, uncovering what the story says "have come to symbolize the real estate crisis not just for Dunmore Homes, but for an entire industry:"When George P. Dunmore started his business in Sacramento in the early 1950s, World War II was over and the building boom was on. Over the next several decades his company, Dunmore Construction, along with other respected
Big Wins for Clinton in Texas and Ohio; McCain Is In as G.O.P. I’m still dumbfounded by the New York Times’ audacious front-page report about Sen. John McCain and an improper relationship he allegedly had with a female lobbyist. And when I say “dumbfounded” I am not claiming surprise at the clear bias the Times held in what appears to be a very calculated news release; rather, I [...]
Peter Fenn ; Frank Donatelli discuss the current state of the Republican race with emphasis on the New York Times article on John McCain. Is the fallout becoming something different than people first expected?
Rumors are circling about an inappropriate relationship between Presidential candidate John McCain and a female lobbyist by the name of Vicki Iseman. For background information on Iseman in a related story, click here.According to reports, McCain's staff tried to sidetrack a possible affair between Iseman and McCain during his 2000 presidential run. Some McCain's top advisors at the time say that they became convinced that the relationship had become romantic between the two after Iseman began showing up with McCain at fund-raisers, in his offices and aboard a client’s corporate jet.Even more trouble for the Senator is coming from talk of special favors being made on behalf of the lobbyist. Former McCain campaign associates said aides feared for a time that attention would fall on the

The NYT picked John McCain and Hillary Clinton as Primary Choices. There should no contest for McCain, who stood against Bush, against torture, for democracy. And yes, Mitt Romney keeps compromizing on any issue in order to get one more vote (he even joined the crew of "Roe vs Wade" killers). No one know what that guy would do.But John McCain sold his soul to the Discovery Institute and stood in favor of teaching Intelligent Design theories in school. And that's a rather scary perspective.Unless someone comes out of the blue (Bloom ?), the only way out for the US is to elect a Democrat for the top job. Both Clinton and Obama would do fine, but the NYT decided to put a conservative bet on Hillary. A little bit too early in the race. Truly, a big favor at the tipping point of the campaign...NY

Huh, so long ago (in 2002) David Winer made a bet with the New York Times that 5 years hence blogs would rank higher the the times on google searches for the 5 top news stories of 2007. Well it’s 2007 and someone looked into that.
It turns out that Winer was right (blogs won 3 out of the 5) but they were all buried not on the first page and in fact it turns out (surprising no one) that Wikipedia beat them both. Here’s the thing though - the purpose of Winer’s bet was that he predicted a news environment “changed so thoroughly that informed people will look to amateurs they trust for the information they want.” But this bet doesn’t prove any of that and on top of it all is insulting in that oh so annoying way that bloggers’ self-love always is with the implication that anyone who continues to rely on the Times as a news source is an uninformed person. Argh.
The bet positions every blog in the world against the NYTimes (which had a pay wall up un
The following story isn’t exactly the kind of press coverage that most arts organizations are hoping for. The New York Times published an article by Dan Wakin and James Oesterich about long-simmering discord within the Seattle Symphony. Titled ‘In Seattle, a Fugue for Orchestra and Rancor‘, the article states:
And to judge from alarmist reports coming from here over a dozen years or so, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra has carried disharmony to new heights, lurching from crisis to crisis. There have been allegations of vandalism aimed at players, including a dented French horn and a razor blade planted in a mailbox; a players' survey that condemned the conductor only to be deep-sixed by management; and lawsuits filed by players accusing the conductor of mental if not physical abuse.
It is a cautionary tale of how the relationship between performers and a long-term leader can go awry and how, in an artistic hothouse, a tangle of emotion and politics can veer out of c

On growing up:“I was once told that the age you are is the age you were when you became who you are. Does that mean I am perpetually 11? I’m not sure I want to have that strict an image. In the movie business, there is such a temptation to stick with a particular persona. There is a kind of artistic branding.”
On shaving her head:“Being bald was great, but the regrowth was the problem. My hair is very curly, and I’d have to have someone iron it if I wanted it to be straight. There was a lot of head-burning. And I started craving hair. I wanted to feel like a girl again.”
On death scenes:“I’ve died many times. I died in Closer, but they changed the ending and, miraculously, I lived. I also died in Star Wars and in Cold Mountain. Death scenes are not more difficult than other scenes. It’s muc
What kind of person needs to pay someone thousands of dollars to teach them enough art for cocktail party conversation, find them stylists to pick out their designer clothing and interior designers to decorate their overpriced Manhattan apartment -- and, ultimately, to introduce them to other similarly snobby like-minded people? And exactly what kind of person would pay $25,000 for a frozen hot chocolate topped with a $250 piece of candy? (Honestly, though, doesn't getting a frozen hot chocolate defeat the purpose? If I want cold, I'll get ice cream. But that's besides the point.)
In a stunning admission of error, the New York Times has admitted that it should not have given moveon.org a substantial price break to run their General Betray Us ad.
In a column entitled, “Betraying Its Own Best Interests,” New York Times Public Editor (ombudsman) Clark Hoyt wrote that the newspaper, in running the MoveOn.org ad for the “standby rate” of $64,575, violated its own written standards.
“I think the ad violated The Times’s own written standards, and the paper now says that the advertiser got a price break it was not entitled to,” Hoyt wrote.
But, after all, this was too good for the NYT to resist. A radical left wing group who echos the Times ideology, it was just too good to pass up. They don’t regret getting moveon.org’s ad out there at a bargain basement price, they only regret that the cat was let out of the bag and they were caught with their ideological pants down.
Now it’s spin control, and moveon
Normally I would push you to a website or firefox plugin with group passwords like from bugmenot for access to NYT premium content. Not anymore, because The New York Times will stop charging for premium content. I figured this was going to happen a long time ago but, better late than never! Right? They will give up their subscription fees even though it raked in over Ten Million bucks a year. This wasn't enough for the big ballers @ the Times. Ad revenue dwarfs this amount so they add more people to show more ads to and increase their rates. They saw Millions of hits come to their site via search engines and hit the user name / password screen and leave. Don't you think it is a great idea to let your readers get what they want - and your advertisers get the reader base. This is a great move on their part and will be a resource I will use more often - again. The New York Times is my home page for my computer, and I check it throughout the day. It's informative and entertaining, and that MUST be a slogan for some newspaper somewhere! So, I see this blog in the Times Home & Garden section called "Dream Home Diaries" and this week, the homeowner is unsure about what to do with the kitchen plan. I immediately went into planning mode (as if I don't already have enough planning to do for my paying clients!) and plunged in.But there's something really fun about putting your plan out there for the world to give you opinions on, especially for something as important as a kitchen. And, of course, the entertainment part comes in where you get all the many and varied people who have all the answers or chastise the writer for something or other. After the "enlarge" feature started working on the plan, on the Time's site, my opinion changed about the kitchen design regarding what should go where, since I saw a bigger drawing,
A court in Indonesia will summons the New York Times and one of its reporters via the media after they failed to appear to defend themselves in a defamation suit brought by a US mining executive, his lawyer said Monday. Richard Ness is suing the newspaper and reporter Jane Perlez in the Jakarta Central Court over stories published in 2004 that claimed mining giant Newmont polluted a bay on the island of Sulawesi with tonnes of waste from its now defunct gold mine. Ness and the local unit of Newmont were cleared in April of criminal charges that they polluted Buyat Bay with arsenic and mercury from the mine.
Politics and Cyberspace - The New York TimesExcerpt:"We caught up the other day with a conference about campaign politics and the Internet, where Joe Trippi took time out from baking, er, burning pies with the Edwards campaign to trace the arc of the influence of politics on cyberspace, and vice versa. A few of the e-advisers to the campaigns, namely those with the Clinton, Obama and McCain operations, also attended. They didn’t give away many trade secrets, but offered some insights into what works and what doesn’t at this stage of the election cycle."http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/06/10/politics-and-cyberspace/Alex
Virginia Heffernan wrote an article in the New York Times that's titled, 'Charm School Teaching a lot more than Manners'.In it, Ms. Heffernan makes a case that Charm School presents an unfiltered presentation of America's continuing debate on class and race. But, in a format where African-Americans are the majority and Caucasians and Asians are the minority. In Mrs Hefferman's mind, "the white and Asian girls here — notably Becky (whom Flav used to call Buckwild), Brooke (Pumpkin) and Leilene (Smiley) — are singled out for their race."And they are preyed upon by the "the most warlike of the women", Larissa, whom she says "constantly suggests that Leilene is a prostitute". She's entitled to her opinion of course but why are the black women perceived as aggressive and overly possessed by race; whilst the white and Asian women are victims and stereotyped?Anyways, you can read the article for yourself and draw your own conclusion.New York Times article on Charm School...
The president of Newmont Mining's Indonesian unit has taken out legal action against The New York Times over pollution accusations made in the paper.Newmont is seeking $US65 million ($A78 million) in compensation, a lawyer said.In April, an Indonesian court cleared the Newmont unit, PT Newmont Minahasa Raya, and its president Richard Ness of charges related to dumping toxic waste into Buyat Bay, from a now defunct Newmont gold mine in North Sulawesi province. The civil action was filed at the Central Jakarta court against The New York Times Company and its reporter, Jane Perlez, for publishing discrediting articles against Ness between September 2004 to February 2006, said Arief Surowidjojo, the Newmont executive's lawyer. In the statement of claim, Ness asks the court to order Perlez and The New York Times to carry a bylined article on the newspaper's front page for 15 consecutive days saying PT Newmont Minahasa Raya did not pollute Buyat Bay.It also calls on Perlez and the Times to

Having already gotten the subject of “religion and the Washington Post” out of my system, I find myself with a few comments to make about the other great left-wing East Coast newspaper and its coverage of Catholic affairs. My comments are inspired by some pretty widespread criticism of the way in which the secular media have reported on Pope Benedict's apostolic exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis. You can find the criticism, either explicit or implied, at influential blogs like Open Book and GetReligion. And the gist of the criticism is this – that news stories about Sacramentum Caritatis have focused almost exclusively on the Pope's tangential remarks concerning divorce and remarriage, homosexuality, and priestly celibacy, rather than on the central theme of the exhortation – the ways in which Catholic liturgy supports and illuminates Eucharistic theology and spirituality.Ian Fisher's article for the New York Times, which both of the blogs mentioned above link to in making t
