April 1, 2008The mother of former American Idol star Elliott Yamin has died, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports. Claudette Yamin passed away on Monday night at the age of 65. The cause of death has not been released; however, she was hospitalized over the weekend, the paper reports. Yamin, 29, was the third runner-up on the fifth season of American Idol. A message posted on Yamin’s Web site Monday by friend Brandon Crowe is titled: “May She Rest in Peace.” It reads: “The world lost a beautiful soul. Ever a likeable, humble soul, Yamin never had as clearly defined a personality as Taylor Hicks, the white-haired leader of the Soul Patrol who wound up besting Elliott. If Hicks seemed like a bit like a seasoned bar band pro, Elliott always seemed like the neighborhood boy made good, a guy with a cockeyed grin (sadly now corrected with veneers; thanks cosmetic dentistry for all your modern wonders!), a guy with a fixation on Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder who felt more comfortable slyly delivering the jazzy soul of "Moody's Mood for Love" than belting out barroom blues-rock à la Taylor.In other words, not only was he kinda shy but his gifts were subtle too -- the perfect ingredients to be a beloved underground on a televised competition, but not quite enough to push him into the winner's circle. At long last Elliot Yamin's album is finally launched and here is the very first single entitled 'Wait For You' World Premiere Video. This is a catchy song which surely is targeting the younger generation on a more commercial approach. Nevertheless its a nice song and great effort from the man.Personally I like the guy's good nature and determination coupled with his awesome vocal gifts.So here's to Elliott and may this album of his go platinum and all his other dreams come true cause he surely deserves it for all the hardships he has gone through.

Thankfully, Elliott Yamin's in great voice on lead single "Movin' On," a kiss-off to a fickle lover that could just as easily be interpreted as a message to all those major-label execs who failed to snatch him up after his third-place finish on Idol's fifth season. The song's got a '70s, smooth-jazzy vibe that vaguely reminds me of "Just the Two of Us," but I don't think it would be totally out of place on today's pop radio, either. Elliott YaminBorn: July, 28, 1978Years Active: 2000'sVocalist Elliott Yamin first gained recognition as the second runner-up on the fifth season of the reality show American Idol. Born in 1978 in Los Angeles to a painter father and former professional singer mother, Yamin eventually moved with his family to Richmond, VA, where he attended middle school and high school.Around the time he turned 14, Yamin's parents divorced, and thus began a period of some personal difficulty for the singer. Already close to 90 percent deaf in his right ear, Yamin was also diagnosed at 16 with type 1 diabetes. In his sophomore year of high school he dropped out and began working at a Footlocker and later as a clerk at a pharmacy. Though Yamin ultimately earned his GED, his focus had already shifted full-time to pursuing a singing career, and he found various performance opportunities including work with a jazz band on a local radio station under the moniker E-Dub.
