Here's a spot for my ego, eh? If only I could come up with something reflective of my inner being . . . Eckert Tolle is deflating my drive to draw eyes. Reality TV is deflating my sex drive. I wonder how good sex with Brett Michaels could possibly be - there in his kick-ass tour bus with band members and VIPs like paid onlookers . . . And, see? I get cornered into this shit and feel like I have to explain myself (I blame my teenage daughters). I don't even feel justified in describing my day. I can only call it "good." Okay, it felt more like "damn good." There's a little description. This is why I should write poetry. Memoir turns pointless.I wonder if I can turn the trip to Carbondale into a poem? But then it would have to be too chronological. An exploding tire, the guy on t

They work long hours, often to exhaustion. Many are paid by the piece — not garments, but blog posts. This is the digital-era sweatshop. You may know it by a different name: home. A growing work force of home-office laborers and entrepreneurs, armed with computers and smartphones and wired to the hilt, are toiling under great physical and emotional stress created by the around-the-clock Internet economy that demands a constant stream of news and comment. Of course, the bloggers can work elsewhere, and they profess a love of the nonstop action and perhaps the chance to create a global media outlet without a major up-front investment. At the same time, some are starting to wonder if something has gone very wrong. In the last few months, two among their ranks have died

Very serendipitously, I just came upon a post at GalleyCat that mentions how during and interview:"Wall Street Journal, Robert Hughes comes right out and asks [Jhumpa Lapiri], "Have you everthought of writing about non-Indians?" To which her answer is, actually, "Idon't think that way when I'm writing stories. Jerry Bruckheimer's reboot of The Lone Ranger may have just received its golden ticket - screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. We've covered this project before, back in May of last year, but since then its been all quiet on the western front. Confirmed officially today is that Elliott and Rossio are in final negotiations to write the script for the live-action big-screen adaptation of the classic 1930s radio show. Besides writing Shrek, The Mark of Zorro, and Godzilla (two of which were also reboots) together, Elliott and Rossio were the duo that brought us all three of the Pirates of the Caribbean adventures. But are they capable of repeating that success? The Lone Ranger is essentially a very risky and troubled project. In a day and age where westerns continue to flop no mat

Syracuse, New York indie band Ra Ra Riot, have made impressive traction within the indie rock/pop world during the past year, thanks largely to a widely-acclaimed debut EP, 'blogger buzz' and opening for groups like the Editors, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and Bow Wow Wow. Ra Ra Riot lives up to their name delivering unabashed chamber indie pop performed with exuberance, the fine-tuned mix of guitars and drums with violins and cellos and a frantic, but jubilant, stage performance. In fact, the band caught the attention of many attendees, other musicians, bloggers and mainstream press at the 2008 South by Southwest Conference in Austin earlier this month. And what is even more admirable is that Ra Ra Riot was able to continue on after the tragic loss of their drummer, John Pike

What shows did we miss out on?Actually, I'm thinking the Writers Strike did us all a huge favor in one way. It filtered out all the garbage that may have been given the green light had times not been so tough. So we were saved from having to endure ad after ad screaming, "Watch this new lame show! Watch it or you'll never fit in! It's horrible, and a waste of time, and you'll probably be stupider for watching it, but watch it anyway!!"On the other hand, there is one type of show that has notoriously defied the entire world of writers. That's right -- a reality show. I was afraid and dismayed during the writers strike, thinking that television would be taken over by "real" crudity. "Hey, sex sells." "Hey, violence sells." "Hey, awkward situations sell." Hey, the dumbing down of Am
There was an interesting article on Peter Roget, creator of the thesaurus, in The Times' Books section yesterday. I took a little exception at the following though:At its worst, [a thesaurus] is a crutch, for crossword enthusiasts, students desperate to imply a little learning in an essay crisis, headline writers, nervous after-dinner speakers and, yes, journalists.Headline writers and journalists? All the headline writers I've ever met have been journalists. Perhaps Ben Macintyre, who is the author of this piece, means 'headline writers and other journalists'.In the same way, it bugs me when people (including some of my colleagues) refer to 'production staff and journalists'. Sub editors and designers can be journalists too!Wikipedia agrees with me on this.
Since we were talking about Islam in Saudi Arabia in the last article I thought I would pass this along too!

Quote: This is an open letter to the progressive Blogosphere... I’ve been posting at DailyKos for nearly 4 years now and started writing diaries in support of Hillary Clinton back in June of last year. Over the past few months I’ve noticed that things have become progressively more abusive toward my candidate and her supporters. I’ve put up with the abuse and anger because I’ve always believed in what our on-line community has tried to accomplish in this world. No more. DailyKos is not the site it once was thanks to the abusive nature of certain members of our community. I’ve

Write Songs Like The Pros With This Powerful And Proven Technique By: Ron Balagot For many years, professional/top writers (writers in general...and not just songwriters) have been using a powerful and proven technique that separates them from beginners. And now, I'd like to share this secret technique with you.If you consistently apply the following 3 steps, you'll notice a big improvement in your songwriting:1. Gather as much information about your song idea as possible.Once you've come up with an idea for your song, write down (or type) all related information. For example: Song Type (ex. love song, inspirational song, up-tempo, etc.) Song's Title Your objective (what you wish to accomplish with the song) The message you are trying to bring across to your listeners Emotion you are tryin

Writer's Block. This is the monster capping the fount whence exist the worlds that we materialize unto paper, and I have had my share of wrestling with this monster. Fortunately, for me, though I have countless times been to hell and back with depression due to frustration with the monster, I never fixated upon the idea that writing was not for me. On the contrary, the personal battles I fought all the more convinced me that writing self-professed "genius" work during the witching hours is absolutely worth it after all the arm-twisting, eye-poking hardships courtesy of this monster we call the Writer's Block. Moreover, to aid fellow comrades-in-ink, I have listed below techniques that I have used so far and have personally proven effective in getting the fount flowing again. 1. Talk ab

These might seem like no-brainers, but you'd be surprised how many people don't have or do something of these things. I've learned the hard way, which is probably not the best way. Regardless, there are things that writers really should have, whether it be a product or a feature turned on in a program, or whatever. So, the following list is a bunch of stuff you should be doing. Some of them do overlap, but they are options for you to think about:Extra ComputerIf you have two computers, keep a copy of all your writing on each one. Every time I open the site it shows the same articles and that I’m still logged in which I’m not. I click on my account and nothing is there but my user name. In the forum there are only a handful of posts and the newest one is dated 12 weeks ago asking if this site is still working, no replies. There are many blogs written by striking WGA writers such as United Hollywood and LateShowWritersonStrike.com. You can find more blogs in this writers strike resource list. But what about all those character blogs that were written by WGA members? They have gone dark and they will stay that way as long as the WGA writers who wrote them remain on strike. A Wired post has comments from an entertainment attorney who says WGA members are prohibited from blogging on these fictional blogs. Read More...
The Hollywood Writers Guild strike that ended last week has been the longest strike in 20 years with the participation of 10,500 writers on the first day itself boosting the cause. The bone of contention for the writers has been copyrights and royalties from movies and TV programming distribution on the Internet, of which they were not a part of. The agreement that lead to the end of the strike reportedly confers a flat fee of $US1,200 for content that is streamed online for the first two years. This will be followed by a two percent pay of the distributor’s gross in the third year including a fee for downloading web content. The Internet is literally a cesspool of information. Individuals can access nearly anything and everything on the Internet if they but possess the means and
If you are having trouble writing there are a few things you can do to help overcome the dreaded "writers block".
