During a recent world series, a man noticed that there was a vacant seat next to the man beside him. He commented that it was unbelievable that someone would spend so much on a ticket and not turn up for the match. The man next to him said that it was for his wife. They had bought the tickets months in advance but unfortunately she died and could not make it. "Why didn't you give the ticket to your

The odometer has turned here in Chicago, where, as readers of just about any sports section know, the Cubs are in Year 100 of their World Series chase. Or, as a local T-shirt entrepreneur puts it, the Cubs are going for their "Century Peat."
It didn't have to be this way. At least, not for 10 more years. That's because the Cubs should have won the 1918 World Series, and, if they had, well, who

Thomas Oliphant’s Praying for Gil Hodges is his very personal account of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers and, in particular, of Game 7 of that year’s World Series in which the Dodgers finally beat the hated New York Yankees to become baseball world champions. But this book is about much more than baseball; it is about how a child can form a bond with a sports team that will last him a lifetime and how

Last year we put up a little blurb about the Chicago White Sox offering fans personalized bricks for an upcoming championship tribute at U.S. Cellular Field. Now details have been confirmed for the 2008 unveiling of "Champions Plaza." On Friday, April 11, the Chicago White Sox will unveil the "Champions Plaza" and "Championship Moments" monument, a diamond-shaped plaza featuring a prominent bronze and granite monument celebrating the 2005 World Series championship. The new brick plaza, located at U.S. Cellular Field's main entrance at Gate 4, is comprised of "legacy bricks" inscribed with personal messages from fans and features an historic timeline highlighting franchise milestones.Related:White Sox to unveil "Champions Plaza" and monument to 2005 season [Press Release]
Hey ya'll, sorry I've been MIA for a while now - taking care of some personal stuff, and gearing up for my own trip down to Ft. Lauderdale for 10 days. But now that everything is settled, you should be hearing more from me.But for now, better late than never, my account of the January Q&A with members of the 1983 Orioles.***Back in January, the Orioles hosted a 1983 Reunion at the ESPN zone, and I managed to head down to attend. According to Emcee Jim Hunter, this reunion is going to be one of many celebrating 25 years since the Orioles' last World Series win.The players in attendance - Ken Singleton, Tippy Martinez, John Stefaro, Bill Swaggerty, Al Bumbry and Scott McGregor all had a great time answering questions from fans in the audience and reminiscing about the past, sharing ins

Courage is not a word I like to use very often when talking about sports. Does it really take courage for a man to go to the field and play a children’s game while making quite a bit of money? I don’t think so. It may take guts, determination, or even mental toughness to take the field in a big game with the whole world, or at least nation, watching your every move. Knowing one mistake and you will forever be remembered for it could seem a little daunting. But courage? Maybe I am playing a semantic game here, but the word courage should be saved for true heroes. Our military, our firefighters, our police officers, they are the ones who show courage when faced with true danger.
Once in a while a sports story comes along that does inspire you, that brings you back to earth. A story that does show courage. This year’s Red Sox season had one such story. Am I talking about the unbelievable post season pitching of Josh Beckett? No. Am I talking about the clutch hitting

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Red Sox were completely on the ground. It didn’t seem like they were going to accomplish something good since the Indians were beating them, and they were just one ALCS game away from throwing their MLB season to the toilet.
Suddenly, everything changed.
Now the Boston Red Sox crown themselves as the 2007 World Series Champions, with an amazing 4-game winning streak against the Colorado Rockies. Game 4 ended on a 4-3 victory, Jonathan Papelbon as the hero who did the last move to win and one hell of a celebration. Boston showed the 86-year wait between one World Series Championship and the next one is over. After a similar victory on 2004, they took the best out of the team and became MLB Champions again just 3 years later. There seems to be a formula (and a baseball team with full capability to use it) that makes them come stronger than ever when everybody thought they would stay inside the hole dug by their contenders. In a few words, they did mo
2004 was no fluke. Alright, even Tim McCarver could tell you that (and he did, repeatedly), but what does 2007 really mean? It means that the new dynasty has arrived. As if Boston sports wasn't doing well enough, they now can add another World Series to their ongoing list of accomplishments. And there will be more. Bostonians are no longer cursed, they are blessed. This new century is starting
The Boston Red Sox swept the Colorado Rockies in the World Series to become the 2007 World Series Champions! Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox and their fans. The Red Sox won their second championship in four years. Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon struck out Rockies' pinch-hitter Seth Smith to end the game and it was time for celebration. Papelbon threw his glove in the air, and opened his arms for Jason Varitek. Varitek put the ball in his back pocket and leaped into Papelbon's arms as everyone gathered together to celebrate victory. Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell won the World Series MVP trophy along with two new vehicles.(Picture is courtesy of Getty images)
The Red Sox did it--won the world series again. Woohoo!!!!!!!!Yay Sox!The only down sides? The Sox are away so they can't celebrate at home and IJ couldn't stay up and watch the game tonight because he has school early tomorrow. But he'll be pumped. And Boston will probably celebrate in style when the team returns home.I didn't get a Red Sox World Series champs shirt when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004, but by golly, I'm gonna get one this time.Time to celebrate, Red Sox Nation!Technorati Tags: World Series ^ champions ^ Red Sox ^ Red Sox Nation ^ Red Sox gear ^ Red Sox shirt
Okay losers, listen up. I don't really care about you as people or the fact that at least some in your organization believe Jesus wears purple pinstripes. However, I AM concerned about the poor showing by the National League, especially given that the Red Sox's recently-emboldened fans seemed to declare this series a walk from the beginning due to the fact that they were playing an NL team. Then there's the fact that, once the Yankees were out of it, Red Sox Nation began the pre-celebration celebration. You can feel the sense of entitlement from here. And as soon as this is over, we're all going to be subjected to the hubris of Patriots fans, many of whom have been too distracted by the WS to sing the praises of the Ken Doll at their normal volume.
Look, at this point, I don't have much hope that you'll come back and win this thing. All I'm hoping for is to save a little face for all of us in the NL. I'm really going to have to ask you to win at least ONE game. Two would be f
Nothing means so much to me then to see the Red Sox sweep the Colorado Rockies in the World Series. Of course, I really wanted them to finish the series back in Boston, but I can settle for a sweep as well.
It was no surprise to see Mike Lowell get MVP. Lynette’s brother Papu picked me all the way off the ground. I could practically touch the ceiling. Everyone was so excited. My friends and family from home were calling my cell phone left and right. They knew how much this meant to me. Not to mention the Patriots kick the Redskins 52-7.
Are you into the World Series?
Obviously we all know the word World shouldn't be in there, because it's teams from just one country. But then, no other countries really play that sport, so it's fair enough.
In fact, with the other planets in the solar system being bereft of life it would be equally valid to call it the Milky Way Series.
Well, if you want world series tickets you can get them on the web, at ticketsnow.com and you can get a discount too.
So, go there and hold up a banner saying, "The Boston Red Sox Are The Best Team In The Milky Way" and let's see if we can get this trend...

Last night, the Boston Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the 2007 World Series as they beat the Colorado Rockies in a tight pitching matchup, 2-1. Instead of a slug-fest, fans were treated to a pitcher’s duel, supplanted by both Boston’s and Colorado’s strong bullpens.Curt Schilling, who is making a strong case as being one of the top post-season pitchers of all time, allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings last night and impressive outings by Hideki Okajima (who went 2 1/3 amazing innings with 4 K’s) along with stud closer Jonathan Papelbon, sealed the Rockies’ fate.Ubaldo Jimenez held his own against the veteran Schilling, as he went a little more than 4 innings and gave up two runs, before being yanked by Clint Hurdle. If there was a bright side to the loss, the Colorado bullpen was excellent, but the offense could not produce anything at all. It’s critical the Rockies win at home in the next few days, or their series is done. From the looks of it, Boston looks strong and the magic tha

Last night, I saw one the best baseball games in a while. Curt Schilling does own October, and the way things are going for him he's going to have that ownership for a while. To be honest, he didn't have spectacular stuff last night. In fact, it was kind of an average performance - he gave up 1 run through 5 1/3 innings and threw 82 pitches. Nevertheless, we won, that's what so special about him. To me, finding a way to win even when you don't have solid stuff is what makes you great. The mark of a good salesman is selling an average product and the mark of a winner is winning even with average stuff.Going back to the game, I think we should be fortunate to have won that game.We didn't swing our bats well, managed only 6 hits. I expected more than that, at least at Fen way park. Also, with Ubaldo Jimenez walking 5 hitters, I think we should have found a way to come up with more runs. We left 12 hitters on base, any time that many get on base you need to score more than 2 runs.Howe

And this time, try to make it a little more interesting.
Tonight's matchup features the unfortunately named Ubaldo Jimenez (which is REALLY going to suck for him once he starts losing his hair) against everyone's favorite old pitcher, Curt Schilling. And if you don't believe that Curt is everyone's favorite old pitcher, just ask him.
Last night I entertained myself by wondering what would happen if the Green Monster actually were a green monster. Tonight, I shall ponder what would happen if Papi had to play SS?
Don't miss it.
If you're a Red Sox fan then you have every reason in the world to be happy. Last night, we routed the Colorado Rockies 13-1. Josh Beckett again proved that he's a winner. I absolutely love the way we swung our bats, we made Jeff Francis, a 17 game winner, look like a minor leaguer. Guys were hitting all over the ball park. Also, until last night the Rockies had won 17 straight games going back to the regular season. Beating that team, the way we did says something about us. It looks like we also set some records for a game 1 in World Series.Well, I normally don't pay too much attention to some baseball stats..because you'll find something like - Red Sox scored 2 runs more when their manager shaved his moustache than with one or something like that, or some would even go far that ....with moustache and ate 5 peanuts than 6...!! you get the idea. However, the records that these Red Sox set last night is pretty amazing.1) Tied the all-time World Series record for extra-base hits (9) i
I watched some of the World Series last night, and I learned two things. One, Josh Beckett is well on his way to becoming one of the best post-season pitchers of all time. Two, for what it is worth, the layoff may have affected the Rockies; however, the Red Sox were just so much better, it doesn’t matter.Unless, you are just waking up, or didn’t know, the Boston Red Sox demolished the Colorado Rockies, the feel good story of October, 13-1. For now, it looks like the magic that Colorado had that enabled them to win 21 of their last 22 games fluttered away as Jeff Francis got lit up for six runs, and then the Rockies’ bullpen just imploded.Boston scored seven in the fifth and that more than anything led them to victory. It looked like the Sox were getting all the key hits and every play going their way; in hindsight seemed to be the exact opposite Colorado was experiencing.Folks, in the last four games, Boston has whooped up on any opponent their way, looking more like the Patriots
From the very first pitch on Wednesday night, it was obvious that the eight day layoff which was supposed to be a gift for the Colorado Rockies turned into a major disadvantage. The Rockies' first four batters struck out. Boston's first batter, rookie Dustin Pedroia, hit it over the Green Monster. That's about all you need to know to understand what happened in Game 1. The Red Sox were never in
Well here we go. Game 1 of the World Series is tonight. The weather keeps threatening to rain, but so far I've only seen a little bit of drizzle. So yesterday a client of mine calls and he's trying to get a hotel for last night because we had a meeting this morning. Every single hotel in the Boston area was sold out. One of the Doubletree Marriots had 1 room available for $855 and one of airport hotels had 1 room for $600. Needless to say, his company was not going to pay that kind of money for hotel room.We eventually found him a room at a reasonable rate, but its pretty amazing. He called his company travel agency and the nearest hotel that had availability was in Andover. What can we say? Red Sox Nation is a big one, and a little on the crazy side. But 2 world series in the past 3 years? Pretty awesome. Where are folks going to watch the game tonight? Anyone out there going to the game? If not, which bars do you suggest? According to the Vegas lines, the current odds for each team to win it all:The Rockies are +200 to win the series at The Greek; according to these #s, you'll pretty much break even on that over the long run.Obviously, the Red Sox are huge favorites. But the Rockies win this series about one third of the time, according to Vegas. So while it would be a pretty significant upset, it really wouldn't be that much of a shock. With Beckett pitching at Fenway, the Sox are also huge favorites to win G1, at 65.8%. Combining this with the series odds, it looks like if BOS wins on Wednesday, they'll be up to about 76.7% to win the series; if COL wins, they'll actually be slight favorites, at 52.8%.If you are confident in the Rockies, there is obviously money to be made here. 5Dimes has Colorado winning Game 1 by 7 or more runs at 22:1. And The Greek has a Rockies sweep at 25:1. I know they're not as good as the Red Sox, but they have won 21 of 22. Over their last 22 games, they've had a

This has been a weekend full of action in the sports world. But let’s face it. We just have to do it. Boston Red Sox just came out of the big 3-1 hole, won the ALCS, and are now proudly heading to the World Series. We have to talk about Red Sox again today.
Despite of all the efforts made by the Tribe, Boston managed to overcome the advantage that was crushing them and turned the whole thing upside down by winning the last 3 games with overwhelming scores: 7-1 (at Cleveland), and then 2-12 and 2-11 at home. Last night it was all about the Red Sox’s celebration while the Indians were still looking for the way to pick their jaws off the floor (and so were the rabid betting fans who had placed it all to their favorites). What happened? They looked really… there! What went wrong?
The Indians put their trust on key players like Kenny Lofton, Asdrubal Cabrera, and even Travis Hafner (who was going to be a major character but ended up having a terrible postseason: striking out
So it now comes to the final two and many will now be asking the question as to who will win out of the Rox or Sox. It is now the final showdown as the Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox face each other but only one can come out victorious and win the 2007 World Series. However many have tried before to predict who will win, only to find that it is a fool’s errand but that will not stop the fans of either baseball teams from saying that their team will win.
When you look at the statistics on paper it does look as though the Red Sox have the edge over the Rockies, although this is an advantage it will only go down to want kind of talent each team has on the day.
So who do you think will win the 2007 World Series, the Colorado Rockies or the Boston Red Sox?

Colorado Rockies vs. Boston Red SoxI've been pretty accurate in my predictions of the MLB Playoffs thus far and I would like to conclude it with a Rockies over Red Sox in 7 games prediction. Truly, I feel like the Red Sox have the edge in pitching (both starting and bullpen). However, the Rockies' pitching has been surprisingly brilliant this year and I don't see it stopping now.I've said it before and I'll say it again. This year's Rockies club is reminding me a lot of the 2003 Florida Marlins....but maybe even better. Winning 21 of 22 games is what I like to classify as MAJOR momentum.Like I said, the pitching match up is a slight edge to the Red Sox, but not as much as some may think. As far as offense is concerned I think the Red Sox have a very microscopic advantage (it's really tough not to give them the slight edge when they have both Manny and Papi). The Rockies have big time momentum on their side along with baseball fans everywhere who aren't Red Sox fans. I'm very e
If They call the Boston Red Sox march to the pennant back in 1967 "The Impossible Dream" the 2007 A.L.C.S. would have to be labeled the "Improbable Comeback." After taking game one of the series from the Cleveland Indians, Boston spent games 2,3, and 4, looking like characters from a George Romero movie "Dawn of the Living Dead Ballplayers." Cleveland won an extra inning game in game two and dominated in games 3 and 4. Boston had to win all the three remaining games left in the series to make it back to the World Series for the first time since breaking the curse in 2004.Well although it was not the unprecedented comeback they made against the New York Yankees as they had to win four games to come back from the edge of the abyss it was pretty darn close. But after Josh Beckett who was named A.L.C.S. MVP won game five and the ancient warrior Curt Schilling won game six it was a one game series knotted up at three each.Game Seven came down to Dice-K being just good enough to get a win tw

Attention friends and readers, the Red Bull Air Race final is TODAY! For those don’t know what Red Bull Air Race is, is an exciting competition in which the world’s most talented pilots are up against each other in a race based on speed, precision and skill. The competition features a dynamic new discipline of flying, called ‘air racing’ where the objective is to navigate a challenging race course in the sky, in the fastest possible time. Flying individually against the clock, the pilots have to execute tight turns through a slalom course consisting of specially designed pylons, known as ‘Air Gates’. They compete in knockout rounds with the two fastest pilots going head to head in the final. The Air Race is not just about speed, the precision is very important to win points, because any mistakes incur penalty points which are then added to the pilot’s time. Flying low to the ground at speeds that can reach 400kph, while attempting difficult turning manoeuvres, requires imme

By Nishan Wilde When I was a little kid, I loved playing baseball. The smell of the freshly cut grass, sunflower seeds, and a day at the ball park were enough to excite me beyond anything else. And while the early morning hours weren’t exactly at my peak activity hours, you could count on me getting up early every Saturday morning to get ready for the weekly game. Simply put, there was something magical about little league games for me.Nowadays, though, it seems as if some of the magic has been taken out of the game. A prime example of what I am talking about happened last night during a Little League World Series game. In the Northwest Regional Championship game, Lake Oswego, Oregon took on Kent, Washington. These two teams had met previously in a game thouroughly dominated by Kent. The game started as most do in these tournaments - both pitchers were throwing heat and dominating the opposing hitters. Then, in the 2nd inning, the Kent pitcher gave up a solo home run. Up until that p

On Tuesday, 17th of July, this year's World Series of Poker (http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com/) came to its' conclusion offering a prize pool of a whopping $59,784,954! There were 6,358 players competing for the first prize, which was more than 8 million dollars, $8,250,000 actually. The winner, a 39-year-old psychologist and social worker from southern California, had won his seat through a satellite. His total investment in the event was 225$ while most of the entrants paid the full entrance fee of $10,000. Now, that's some nice investment and I hope one day I will do something similar. After all who doesn't want...
OK, I'm not a big baseball fan these days, but being a former OSU student this is even bigger than my "whoohoo" I gave them last year... Only three teams have repeated since the 60's. Congrats. I do feel sorry for UNC though, they lost the series twice in a row now, it's an accomplishment just getting there, not to mention twice. So I gotta admit, I knew the Beavs were to at least the quarterfinals and didn't realize they'd made it to the finals, but yesterday Pat and I ran errands, heard a radio commercial for Don the Beachcombers restaurant and Mai Tai Tiki Bar... and being the Tiki fans that we are we had to go check it out. Anyway, the first game of the series was on at the time so we got to watch it and had to watch the last innings of tonight's game. BTW... Beachcombers... big thumbs up for the visual improvements in the bar and diner. We'll have to do dinner there (I've heard lots of positive on the forums at Konaweb) but the bar was opened up, it used to be sort of scree
PRIMM, Nev. (AP) — In poker, they say all you need to win is a chip and a chair. At the World Series of Golf, it’s a ball and an attitude.
Sixty amateur golfers each ponied up $10,000 to tee off Monday in a three-day golf tournament that uses poker betting in place of traditional scoring.
“It’s a lot like poker in the sense that the whole thing is a game of pressure,” said Steve Dannenmann, one of five poker pros who traded the felt for the greens at the Primm

A couple of weeks ago, the IRL Indy Car Series kicked its 2007 season first in Homestead and then on the Streets of St. Petersburg. Basically despite all of the off season movement including Danica Patrick going to AGR, the season is vertically the same as the 2006 season that includes back to back victories with first Dan Wheldon winning in Homestead in dominating fashion as he did in 06 and Castroneves winning in St. Petersburg as he did in 06 as well. The 2007 season looks to be a complete model of last season. The same four drivers are going for the victories and making a run at the championship while the rest of field watches and wonders from behind as a cloud of smoke blows by them.I would say predictions would be a little bit pointless, but here we go…For race to race victories with the expection of three-four races, it will come down to Penske Racing with Sam Hornish Jr. (last years champion after a tie breaker) and Helio Castroneves, vs. the boys at Ganassi Racing with Dan Wh

If you haven't noticed, I love to follow the Hot Stove Season almost as much as I do the regular season. I probably enjoy that more than the playoffs, save for the World Series.
So far, the most talk about moves made and not made have centered around the Cubs, Red Sox and Yankees. A few days ago, I presented the Kansas City Royals ‘case for being a team on the rise. Today, I'm going to suggest something that is absolutely ludicrous: The Texas Rangers Will Win the World Series!
I know it is crazy to make such a prediction before the first pitch of Spring Training has occurred, but the off season is all about speculation, right? Anywho, here is my evidence to support my claim?
Supporting Evidence #1: Off Season Moves + the Zito Factor
The wheels were set into motion on November 6 when the Rangers announced that former Oakland A's coach, Ron Washington, would manage the club in 2007. Just days later, former Oakland A's manager, Art Howe, was named as a bench coach and infiel
I am sorry I didn't really post anything about the World Series Champions teh St. Louis Cardinals. As I said before Inever thought they had a chance to win it, but I guess that is why they actually play the...
I feel confident that my mom could beat So Taguchi AND David Eckstein in a fight all by herself. My mother is about 4 foot 7, has a bad back and chronic foot pain.Sean Casey has that dorky white-guy run down to perfection. Really, that is textbook form. That Holiday Inn commercial where the guy is touching Joe Buck's throat makes me wish that I was never born. A guy getting a massive erection while feeling Joe Buck's adam's apple is the new low-point of my life.Ronnie Belliard looks like he just finished filming a clip with Nelly.
I’m just back from a week in Vegas – the opening weekend of the biggest poker event of the year, the WSOP. My friends at Aces.com asked me to take the stars of the poker movie they’re sponsoring to a few interviews and a bunch of parties. Tough gig or what!?I had a great time with Christina Morris, who plays the “bad girl” and Sheena Chou, who plays a spoilt Chinese schoolgirl in ACES the Movie. Rene, the Manager of Aces.com joined us as well – somebody had to pick up the tab wherever we went!I went down a few days ahead of the Aces crew since I had an invitation to the big Bodog party Tuesday night. I didn’t think there’d be a lot of people there since it was the closing party for their big marketing conference – and the conference had been cancelled. I must admit I was a little nervous about flying into the U.S. on a ticket paid for by an online gambling company, the week after the FBI had arrested some high profile online gambling executives. But since a friend
The Motor City was in a celebratory, party-like mood as the Detroit Tigers were in the World Series for the first time since 1984. After an amazing wave of momentum going into it, they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals who'd limped their way to finish the regular season. Although the team lost the AL Central title on the last day to the Minnesota Twins; nevertheless, they got into the playoffs via the wild, they dismantled the Yankees and the Athletics on an impressive playoff run.Having been to Detroit a few times, I know the city loves their sports teams and 2006 was a magical year for the city. The Tigers and their spirit woke up a city that in the eyes of many was dead & like the team last year; the city is on the upswing.Under the guidance of the grizzled, yet passionate Jim Leyland, the Detroit Tigers were the surprise team in all of sports and the feel good story of all baseball. Now, after their amazing 2006, the Tigers need to prove the baseball world that their past season wa
Having a beer in the stands at a baseball game is pretty much an All-American activity, but not during the NCAA College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Rosenblatt Stadium is dry during the annual championship event, as are an increasing number of college stadiums. Now the NCAA is going one step further and calling on city officials in Omaha to establish a so-called "clean zone" around the stadium where temporary beer garden licenses would not be allowed.NCAA officials and some neighbors that live near the stadium say that the sale of beer, along with vendors hawking everything from food to unlicensed merchandising, has gotten out of control. The new zone would ban alcohol sales at temporary locations and restrict advertising to only companies sponsoring the tournament.Omaha will play host to the College World Series through at least 2010. NCAA officials say they want the event to have a family atmosphere. It will likely make the clean zone concept part of future host city contracts. In 2006
