The cost of obesity is going up.
According to a Conference Board report, obese workers cost private employers as much as $45 billion every year in medical expenses and lost work. That’s a heavy financial burden to bear. Does it justify employers hiring thinner job candidates, rather than those who are obese?
Workplace discrimination such as this—or in any other form—is uncalled for. But the growing costs of obesity increase the odds of it happening, along with other problems for employees and employers.
Everyone’s Problem
For employees, it can be difficult to prove employers have discriminated against them because of their weight. But an article in the International Journal of Obesity says weight discrimination is already prevalent, and ju

As a worker, a citizen (of the world) and a human being, I am really disappointed and fed up with incompetent politicians, their policies, retoric and lack of vision, recurrently taking the role of the despicable and unscrupulous Sheriff of Nottingham, stealing from the poor to line the pockets of the rich.I strongly believe we will soon be needing a Robin Hood type figure to help us survive.

There's a police report out this week (see BBC item here) that effectively says that the influx of migrant workers to various parts of the UK has NOT led to a disproportionate increase in crime, despite what some think. It's simply a numbers game. From any 1000 people you are likely to have 10 who break laws, cause trouble etc. That's from any group, not just the migrants many have pointed the finger at. For people in and around Crewe where considerable numbers of economic migrants have arrived it would be easy to say that certain types of crime have increased. Apparently, that's not right. Moreover, take a look at the latest CNBC magazine/newspaper that hit the letterboxes over the last week and there's an article by a woman from MMU suggesting that people need to give migrant workers mor

You know you are injured, but is your injury covered by Workers’ Compensation?

What is Workers’ Compensation?
In Georgia, Workers’ Compensation operates as a “no fault” system for compensating injured workers for time missed from work and for costs of necessary medical treatment. The system presents trade-offs for Georgia workers. While it bars claims against an employer for personal injury, it also bars some of the defenses an employer [...]
