If you have created a blog for your website, most likely you created it with WordPress. A blog created with WordPress is functional without any plugins but will require a lot more work. Plugins improve the functionality of your blog experience such as eliminating spam, monitoring traffic to your site, etc.
Installing a plugin is a relatively easy procedure in most cases. Wordpress offers a simple procedure to add a plugin to your blog.
• First go to the Administration Panels and click on the Plugin tab.
• Once the plugin is uploaded to your WordPress blog, activate it on the Plugins Management screen and your plugin should work.
• Be sure to do your homework before installing WordPress Plugins. Read over the readme.txt files and instructions for installation.

As I was experimenting with WordPress plugins and themes I noticed that they would often embed outbound links in my blog. I don’t mind a footer link to the developers’ Web sites (I keep my credits on a separate credits page), but I found one WordPress plugin called Gregarious that secretly embedded a hidden sitewide link in my footer:

Andy’s hack inserts the rel=”nofollow” attribute to those links to preserve link juice. 2. Subscribe to Comments - This nifty plugin was created by Mark Jaquith. It inserts a little box after the reply field of each of your posts, which when ticked will send an email reply to each commentor when a reply is made. I definitely saw a rise in participation when I started using this one and I always use it when participating in other blogs that use it. 3. With the daily dilemma of coming up with quality content, blogging can be hard work. Why bother dealing with the technicalities of the WordPress administration interface when you’ve got nifty to plugins to make life a whole lot easier? I’ve taken the liberty to compile a ‘different’ list of plugins from the rest, that help you combat every thing from people that steal your content, to creating affiliate landing pages out of blog posts you’ve written. And if that isn’t enough, we could always use a little boost in productivity from customizing the WordPress admin panel. Check ‘em out and let me know how they’re working for you

I know it’s been talked about by other bloggers, but I’ve gotten asked about which WordPress plugins I use. So here goes…
Plugins serve to extend your WordPress blog — to give it more oomph, more pizzazz even. But most importantly, they help you make sense of your whole blogging experience. It could be to make blogging more fun, such as running polls or contests off your blog. Or to maintain a directory (as opposed to a simple blogroll). For me, my primary use of plugins is for extending the power of the already-powerful WordPress platform.
So here’s a list of the plugins that I use in almost all my WordPress blogs. They’re all compatible with version 2.2.1, by the way. (more…)
WordPress, WP plugins
I remember back when I first start this blog back in February and was completely new to the Wordpress world! Little did I know Wordpress was just an empty shell just dying for a plugin or two. Do you think Wordpress did this purposely since they knew programmers would do them a favor in return for traffic to their new plugins?
I’ve actually had thoughts of designing a plugin in return for traffic!
To get started I made the famous list that millions of other bloggers have posted ‘The Best Wordpress Plugins’ that I use for this site. There are so many plugins being made everyday you could almost start a site just talking about new plugins. Here are 5 more to take a look at but I personally only use the duplicate content cure for this site.
Duplicate Content Cure (stop search engines from indexing duplicate content)
Bankroll (sell your own reviews)
Postviews (show the number views per post)
Tiger Admin (change the look of your wordpress dashboard)

Wordpress-Cache: WP-Cache is an extremely efficient WordPress page caching system to make your site much faster and responsive.
Sphere Related Content: The Sphere Related Content plug-in displays an icon link at the end of your blog posts. When a reader clicks on the icon link, Sphere finds blog posts and media articles related to your content.

Bad Behavior is a PHP-based solution for blocking link spam and the robots which deliver it. The http:BL WordPress Plugin checks IP addresses of clients connecting to your blog against the Project Honey Pot database. All 3 of these plugins prevent any potentially harmful clients from accessing your blog. Since installing these plugins I have had no spam comments at all.
AntiLeech is used to help prevent content theft by Sploggers. It prevents errant parties from stealing your content and bandwidth by producing a fake set of content especially for
WordPress Plugins and Kontera
Jon’s Showoff Rankings (lower right side) - This simple plugin allows you to display your Google Page Rank, Alexa and Technorati rankings. Besides the “showoff” aspect, I thought it would be handy to have these stats easily accessible once I’m on the road, and don’t have the benefit of a customized browser.
Javascript Pull Quotes - I had to deactivate this plugin because it did not want to play friendly with…
Kontera - I had noticed Kontera’s in-text advertising on many other blogs, however to qualify, they require far more page views per month than I am currently receiving. The application’s lowest option is “Less than 500,000.” However, through a partnership John Chow has set up with Kontera, lower trafficked sites with quality content can be accepted into the program. I am going to evaluate the service for 30 days, before deciding whether to commit to it for an entire year (which is a r
If you haven’t noticed that my site’s been down for the last hour, it’s because I activated this mailing plugin that completely messed up my whole site to the point where I couldn’t even log in to deactivate it. It eventually came to me that if I move the plugin file it would de-activate automatically and poof, my website came right up. I guess my boss was right when he said I tend to be over-technical and miss the easy things.
Anywho, I’ve messed around with a lot of plugins and I’ve composed a tiny list of ones that you would probably be better off not installing. Some of these result in what Dan would call “the Internet version of ‘the clap’”

JavaScript Pull-Quotes - This is one of the cooler plugins I’ve come across lately. It pulls out text I select, and highlights it in a larger font on the left or right side of the post. I’m hooked on using it, and I hope readers have found it fun and visually appealing.
My Week in Review
Another day, another dollar. I started out this week by taking advantage of the beautiful Springtime weather we experienced in the DC area Sunday (Earth Day). I took the metro to The Mall, and visited The National Museum of the American Indian, as it was the second travel writing assignment I received. Of course you’ll have to wait for me to write and re-write the piece before getting my take on the newest museum to join the Smithsonian.
Along with the warmer weather and longer days, I’ve begun to increase my daily exercise. I tend to hibernate like the mighty grizzly during winter, thus allowing my cholesterol to creep up, and my quadriceps to atrophy
If you are WordPress user you might want to try this Plugin (SEO Title Tag 2.0 beta6) by Stephan Spencer.
Title tags are arguably the most important of the on-page factors for search engine optimization (”SEO”). It blows my mind how post titles are also used as title tags by WordPress, considering that post titles should be catchy, pithy, and short-and-sweet; whereas title tags should incorporate synonyms and alternate phrases to capture additional search visibility.
The SEO Title Tag plug-in allows you to override a page’s or a post’s title tag with a custom one you define, it reverses the order of the blog name and the title (giving more keyword prominence to the title instead of the blog name). Or you can drop the blog name altogether.

If you are K2 Theme user just change what is within the (<title></title>) container in header.php to:

WordPress Plugins
I only installed one plugin this week, however it’s a great one! Previously, I received a comment from a reader who suggested the importance of making changes that enhance communication between me and those reading, and vice versa. I’ve kept this design theme in mind the past two months.
Brians Threaded Comments 1.5.9 - I first noticed this plugin in action on John Chow dot Com as it is one of his 16 recommend plugins. Since installing, I’ve found it much easier to share my comments with individuals when there are multiple comments left on a single post. See it in action on My Top 5 Most Hilarious Travel Photos post. On the downside, like so many of my coolest plugins, Internet Explorer 6 doesn’t seem to like it. Maybe it’s my theme. At any rate, I apologize to the 25% of visitors who use IE 6 should your experience be difficult, and humbly suggest you upgrade to Firefox or IE 7 for better browsing on my site and others.

Blog Design Updates
I focused more on writing than design this past week, however I made a few key updates.
Get Recent Comments allows you to post a customizable number of recent comments in your sidebar. The user name of the commenter is a hyperlink to the comments. This is a great way to draw attention to the dialogues occurring on recent posts.
WP Post Ratings has been on my radar since I started this blog, however my first attempt at installation never worked out. So I was ecstatic when my second try, earlier this week, worked! The only downside has been the display in Internet Explorer 6 is problematic - the Comments section gets pushed a screen’s length down the page for some reason. Unfortunately, I’ve had other issues with IE 6, and have decided not to cater to it. This site is optimized for use with Firefox.
Ultimate Tag Warrior 3 is supposed to be the bomb due to it’s flexibility. I installed it yesterday after the previous plugin I was using kept
Blog Design Updates
It was a veritable orgy of Wordpress plugin updates this week. I went hog wild! Hopefully, regular readers have found value in them already. The list below excludes the ones tied to behind-the-scenes performance.
Added plugin to allow as-you-type previews of comments being left
Added plugin to automatically end each post with a reminder to subscribe to the RSS feed
Added In-Series plugin to allow for the flexibility to create a series of posts. It automatically ties them all together for readers. See Dental Dilemma as an example. This functionality will prove especially useful once I begin my series on saving for a ’round the world trip (or anything for that matter).
Added Think Free document viewer which allows Microsoft Excel documents to be viewed as HTML files. Again, this will prove useful for readers when I post my rough budget, itinerary, and pre-departure task list as it’s all in one Excel file. My plan will be shared as part of the seri
I have decided to post a list of some handy plugins for WordPress, most of which I have implemented on this site. I will attemp to update them as new versions are released, although it may be wise to vist the plugin homepage for the latest code.

Tried a few plugins for wordpress blogs in an attempt to replicate this blog. Seems quite straightforward. Find plugin, download it, unzip it, FTP it to the plugins folder on the server and go to the plugins page on Wordpress and activate it.
Tried a few and a couple worked and a couple failed miserably. I don’t think I was attempting anything too adventurous just a hit counter. No doubt I wasn’t ’running it right’. Will try more later. I’m going to have fun with this.
The book I have been using is just too confusing. Now I have no doubt that the writer is an expert in the Wordpress world but the distinctions in the book for the processing of Wordpress.com blogs, hosted blogs and own hosted blogs are not clear at all. The section on servers was interesting but sent me down a few dead ends. It gave me the impression that I needed to install both Apache and MySQL which I duly did.
Wrong, you only need to do that if you are running your own server. If yo

Most of you will be aware that I’m using the fantastic wordpress software to power this little place of mine here. If you’ve ever been and checked out my plugins page you may also be aware that I use quite a few of them! Being a php virgin they have helped add functionality and features here that I would have never been able to do on my own as well as begin my education into how it all works. So without any further ado, here are my favs and a little bit of a review for each of them. This post is really only of any use to those who hose their own blog using the wordpress software, so if that’s not you, why not take a look at my archives or something ok?!
Admin Drop Down Menu - This is by far my favorite, and is what prompted this post. I found it today on a list of plugins that are compatible with the new version of wordpress. Basically what it does is when you roll your mouse over a top level menu item whilst your in admin, it shows the submenu items in the line
well, since I have hunted so long through Google for a plugin like this, finally I gave up. Why don’t I create it by my self?

Wordpress is good enough as it is, but sometimes, you just need a little more “oomph” to make it even better.
Be it a plugin to display HTML codes and smilies in your comments area or a comment spam blocker, you can have it in your Wordpress and more.
