A young woodpecker stunned himself on our back door this morning. When he didn't object to my taking a few shots without a plate of glass between us, I decided he might need a lift into a low-lying branch. . . the very idea of which was all he needed to send him soaring up to his usual height.

Like all woodpeckers the great spotted woodpecker has two toes pointing forward and two toes pointing backwards, which enable them to hop easily up and down tree trunks looking for insects just under the bark. This still from an NHNZ Images film was shot in Japan but could just as easily have been shot anywhere through northern Asia and Europe, as great spotted woodpeckers are widely distributed.Their characteristic drumming noise can be heard from a great distance. It is caused by repeated strong taps of the beak on branch or tree trunk, and is made by either male or female birds. It is both a method of locating insect prey within the tree, and as a territorial marker for other great spotted woodpeckers in the neighbourhood. As to the cartoon character, Wikipedia has the following to s
This is the big one around here - and reputedly the inspiration for Woody Woodpecker: not just in its looks: the calls we hear when they make their way, sometimes as many as four at a time, through the woods towards our chief attraction - suet - are pretty close to that irritating call of the cartoon version.I say this is "the big one" but that status is among the woodpeckers. One of my most impressive backyard sites was a Sharp-Shinned Hawk chasing a Pileated Woodpecker through the fir trees: like a scene from Star Wars. For an interesting perspective on the part this woodpecker plays in the forest ecology, read Woodpeckers, Fir Snags and Hummingbirds by Dave Neads. I chose the Pileated Woodpecker as No.7 to coincide with his publishing of this post. For more on Cariboo birds, see my Bird
Woodpecker, Jeff Bark’s newest works are the subject of his solo display at Michael Hoppen contemporaneous corridor in London end 11 January 2007, his second display at the locale. Every aspect of Woodpecker, photographer Jeff Bark’s newest works, is so multilayered, it makes my brain hurt—in the best way practicable. The photos themselves drop between a diorama, painting and film. His involved process includes constructing a pond-like set that took over a month to erect in his Brooklyn workshop. He fabricated a pool, brought in battered deal and created a faux forest. The upshot is a group heavily symbolic photos in a country setting rife with loneliness, despondence and introspection. This week's theme is "creative." The above is a Red-Bellied Woodpecker, named such because of a nearly unnoticeable red spot on his belly. Red-Bellied Woodpeckers are actually easier to identify by the red stripe on the top of their head that gives them the look of having a red mohawk. The picture above, however, shows the red on the bottom of his head - or does it? This "creative" woodpecker has turned his head nearly 180 degrees to the side and flipped his head upside down to get his bill into a spot he apparently couldn't get into previously. Very creative, for a bird.Taken with the Canon Digital Rebel T / 350D and a Sigma 70-300mm Lens on January 27, 2007 in Davenport, Iowa.

As to the cartoon character, Wikipedia has the following to say about its origins "...the idea for Woody came during the producer's honeymoon with his wife, Gracie, in Sherwood Lake, California. A noisy woodpecker outside their cabin kept the couple awake
The Tall One is still not feeling well, so she stayed home today, even though it's the first day of her routine and she should be leaving early. She says the place she goes to is called work, but I don't really believe her. Her job is to take care of me, that's the only work she should be concerned about. Anyway, that place will have to do without her today, because I can tell she is still miserable. She coughs and sneezes a lot, and she is really tired. For Miss Prissy and me, that's a good thing, because it means that the cage door is open whenever the Tall One is awake and on the soft thing she calls a couch. I took the opportunity to climb behind the cage. At first, I ripped up all the newspaper the Tall One had placed underneath the cage. Once it was all gone, I did not really know what to do, because all that was left was the wooden cabinet our cage sits on, but then I started tapping it with my beak. It was a lot of fun, because it sounded hollow and made a lot of noise. I l
