This stylized head study was doodled on a piece of shina wood from McCain's. After drawing on the block with graphite & watercolor, the first bit of carving begins around the forehead - above.After more clearing of surface area....Test print being pulled to make adjustments to the block above.A second proof is pulled above...And painted with watercolor.A sample of the stylized busts I saw at the Getty Villa (this one is in Athens, but you get the idea).
This little woodcut is based on a photo of breakfast in the early morning light, in Santa Barbara, CA. I've painted the scene, printed it, sketched it, and I'm sure I'll make something else from the photos, because I love the light, the memories, and the Mexican pottery on the table. I spent a lovely, rainy day making art with my friend JMC earlier this week. We carved on shina - a first for me - and I loved it.
