RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL:JEWISH POLYGAMY:YISRAYL HAWKINS:"MORE WIVES, MORE WITCHCRAFT"
RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: JEWISH POLYGAMY: YISRAYL HAWKINS : "THE MORE WIVES, THE MORE WITCHCRAFT"   In the news recently is another cult quoting Jewish scripture allowing them to be polygamous. This time it was Pastor Yisrayl Hawkins who has his congregants dress up in Jewish prayer shawls (tallitim) with fringes (tzit-tzit),  and kippot, and has Shabbat services on Saturday.

      The Meaning Of WitchCraft Pt.4
The Meaning of Witchcraft by GERALD GARDNERPart 4It is evident from early pictures and descriptions (the earliest being the famous cave paintings found at Ariege in the Caverne des Trois Freres, done by men of the Stone Age), that the High Priest who was the god’s representative sometimes wore a ritual disguise, consisting of a head-dress bearing the horns of a stag or a bull, and a kind of robe of animal skins; sometimes, too, a mask which concealed his features. This custom seems to have been more particularly followed at the big Sabbats, when many people gathered outside the circle who were not actual initiates of the witches’ mysteries, but came “for luck” (i.e. for the blessing of the Old Gods) or simply to enjoy themselves. It made the proceedings more impressive, and at the

They were very merry and not at all refined, and the place they always chose for their dances was the churchyard; and unluckily the songs they sang as they danced in a ring were old pagan songs of their forefathers, left over from old Mayday festivities, which they could not forget, or ribald love songs which the Church disliked. Over and over again we find the Church councils complaining that the peasants (and sometimes the priests, too) were singing ‘wicked songs with a chorus of dancing women’, or

      The Meaning Of WitchCraft Pt.2
The Meaning of Witchcraft by GERALD GARDNERPart 2I am not the first to have pointed this out; Eliphas Levi, the celebrated French occultist, who was also a devote Catholic, stated in his book, Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie, that the first condition of success in the practice of black magic was to be prepared to profane the cultus in which we believed. Some may hold that anyone who does not believe in Transubstantiation is lacking in the True Faith and doomed to Hell. I am told that certain Nonconformist ministers preaching against Transubstantiation obtained consecrated Hosts and held them up to mockery in the pulpit; but I have never heard that this made them witches. What about the Christian people who carry such consecrated Hosts about in lockets as personal charms? Where, they ask, did it come from? What is behind this thing that obsessed the minds of men for centuries? Is it an underground cult of devil-worship? A dark thread running through history? An irruption of the supernatural into normal life? Or is it an enormous delusion? What is the meaning of it all? This is a matter which of late years has exercised the ingenuity of a number of

Witchcraft allegations in Chad refugee camps
A refugee camp is a place that is quite nasty enough as it is, obviously, without the added grief of ridiculous nonsense like "witchcraft" allegations: When 11 refugees fell ill and died within a single week earlier this year at the Dosseye refugee camp in southern Chad, witchcraft allegations swirled through the community and led to cases of assault and arson. In one incident, three siblings died within an hour and Adjara, a widowed mother of eight in the camp, was attacked by 15 others who accused her of cursing the children. ... Josiane Nguerebaye, from UNHCR's community services team, said after the 11 deaths – mostly from diarrhoea, malaria and malnutrition – "other refugees really lost faith in their ability to recover from illnesses and lost faith in modern medicines." Many went exclusively to the traditional healers in the camps for treatment, and if they succumbed to their illnesses it was often explained as witchcraft. "People had stopped drinking the well water

Witchcraft on the rise in Malawi
Chief Inspector Andy Walker has recently returned to England from Malawi, where he spent some time with the country's police service, battling crocodiles, cattle rustlers, and witches: He said: "Witchcraft is becoming a significant problem in Malawi, with the particular focus on the young, who are manipulated by older persons. "They are placed 'under a spell' and encouraged to commit criminal acts – normally assault, but, on occasions, even murder. "Children tell of 'being taken away' during the night and being instructed by the witch doctors. Unless a witch doctor confesses, then a charge of 'conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace' is libelled, and this change has proved successful so far." On occasions, villagers will take matters into their own hands and administer summary justice. However, this is being discouraged and police are now regularly informed of people practising 'the craft'. Some children are inducted into witchcraft from an early age – as yo

Malaysian Ministry of Defence, our very own Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry?
It is interesting to note that our Malaysian Ministry of Defence had been featured quite extensively lately by our online alternative news providers and of course in our political opposition parties’ campaigns. One by one, allegations of scandals had been thrown to the Malaysian Ministry of Defence. If we go back as far as the year 2000, the allegations themselves can be written into one juicy novel. Heck, that novel could even outclass Sidney Sheldon’s best mystery novel in any day!In recent years, we have three alleged scandals involving the Malaysian Ministry of Defence: The ongoing murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaaribbu was allegedly linked to the government’s purchase of Scorpene and Agosta submarines from France, Questions had been asked on the recent purchase of 18 Sukhoi SU-30MK and recently Our head of Public Accounts Committee Dato’ Shahrir Abdul Samad expressed his suspicion that some critical government records may have been purposely destroyed (th

Strange title for a post on burfitt's autumn/winter 07/08 collection? Please let me explain. Yesterday I've finished reading the last Harry Potter book (it just took me three days...). I would have never considered myself as a huge Harry Potter fan, I even caught me having forgotten about important things while reading The Deathly Hollows. But strangely it felt weired closing the book for the last time (the last 20 pages nearly caused my a heartattack - at least I didn't have to exercise that evening ;-). I somehow lost a friend. Hey, it's over now! There won't be any more books! No more waiting fo the next one to come!If this post would be on beeing tagged I would confess that I had a "witch" phase during my teenage times. You might think that modern witches are simply weired outsider girls creating their own world around them, a world where they actually count in. Well, might be. I considered myself as a cool witch (guess that's what everyone in that case does?), or at least as

      Dangers Of Witchcraft
By: {Angeleyes} Hi Everyone, I would like to briefly tell you a story that involved witchcraft and hopefully give you an insight of what could happen, so here goes. I had a friend years ago, who died of a horrific death, and noone knew who or why it happened, she died of strange circumstances even the police and the coroner could not come to any conclusions about her death, it was a very sad time for me and one i would care not to remember, as it hurt and upset me so much that a young lady of 29 could die suddenly under strange circimstances for no apparent reason. I even forgot her name, that is until Leon told me about his visitor the other day This visitor told Leon about her death, about how and the way she died, and said that this was for Nikki (me). He also decribed her fully which brought back painful memories, I was shaking when he decribed her as I did not want to think about it. He said that she told him, her ex and his new girlfriend at the time were dabbling with wicca

      Witchcraft
Witchcraft, in various historical, anthropological, religious and mythological contexts, is the use of certain kinds of alleged supernatural or magical powers. A witch is a practitioner of witchcraft, and may be male or female. While mythological witches are often supernatural creatures, historically many people were also accused of witchcraft, or claimed to be witches. Witchcraft still exists in a number of belief systems, with many modern practitioners. The term "witchcraft" can have positive or negative connotations depending on cultural context; for instance, in post-Christian European cultures it has historically been associated with evil and the Devil, while most modern witches see it as beneficent and morally positive. In mythological contexts, witches are most often female, the male equivalent being a wizard, sorcerer, warlock or magician. In a modern Wiccan or Neopagan context women and men are "witches" equally, the term "warlock" being reserved for those who have betrayed thei

      South Africa's witchcraft suppression bill
Witchcraft is tricky business. There are so many different definitions of what a "witch" is, that witches themselves probably don't know what's what and who's who. One thing that's clear, though, is that so-called "pagans" and practitioners of Wicca (utterly deluded as they may be) are not to be confused with all the kinds of sorcerers, medicine men, witchdoctors, etc. that can be found in traditional cultures. Which is why a "witchcraft suppression" bill in South Africa - intended to counteract the practice of people accusing members of their own communities of being witches, often leading to lynchings and brutal violence - has the local pagans up in arms, according to this: The bill, leaked in June to the South African Pagan Rights Alliance (Sapara), threatens to undermine the freedoms and rights of a religious minority by criminalising and prohibiting their right to exist and practise their religion, says Sapra convener Damon Leff. Two women torched over witchcraft accusation
In Delhi, India, two sisters had kerosene poured over them and were set on fire by relatives who thought the women had killed a man's wife through the use of "black magic," according to this: Kamla, 42, and Shanti Devi, 45, were rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital with 20 percent and 75 percent burn injuries respectively. They were put on blaze at Kamla's home in Sultanpuri by four youngsters. Police have arrested Pammi, while his three brothers, Pintu, Raju and Suresh, were still on run. According to police, Pammi went to Kamla's house with his brothers knowing that Shanti was also present there. They poured kerosene over them and set them on fire. 'Pammi, whose wife died a few days ago, thought that the sisters had done some black magic to kill his wife. The accused and the victims used to fight over the same issue, but in the evening Pammi along with his brothers went to kill them,' a police official said. Three people hacked to death for practicing witchcraft
Reports of people being killed for witchcraft are popping up with distressing frequency. Here's another one: Three members of a family were killed by villagers in India's eastern state of Orissa for allegedly practicing witchcraft, a newspaper reported Tuesday. Police said a villager, his wife and son were killed by two men in the tribal-dominated northern district of Keonjhar on Sunday, the Asian Age reported. The accused chased the victims when they were working on their farmland and hacked them to death. They later surrendered to local police, claiming the three victims were suspected of practicing black magic, the report said. Museum of Witchcraft T-shirt
Ok, I know that most of the people don't really believe in magic and all that but some time ago I bumped into this t-shirt from the Museum of Witchcraft (in Boscastle Cornwall, UK) and found it pretty cool! From what I hear is quite a popular piece especially with the pagan community in Britain and is has become a "classic". The t-shirt is quite simple featuring a hazel pentagram artwork, which comes from a collection of Dutch magical drawings (also known as Richel Collection) held in the museum library. The museum doesn't have an online store but you can check out the t-shirt here.

      Practical Witchcraft - On Reversals
כ" באייר תשס"זJacob Da Jew asked:If you do reversals of curses, who cursed them to begin with?I don't presume to know who cast a curse to begin with. It isn't important that I know and in some ways, it is better that I don't know.Reversals do not reverse upon specific people or groups via my intention. The reversal is built around reversing the curse no matter who cast it or when or how. In other words, neutralizing a curse is the focus as opposed to being focused on any curse-sender. For all I know, a curse may have Divinely originated. Thus, a reversed curse would return to the First Source, to be absorbed in It without any consequence to anyone particularly.Doing it the way I do it, allows for the Divine Mind to direct the reversed energy independent of where I might think the energy should go. I could be wrong regarding from where a curse originates. Consequently, I do not interject my own thinking about that when composing a reversal ritual. The Divine Mind decides. So

      Witchcraft And Kabbalah
כ" באייר תשס"זJacob Da Jew thinks I'm Wiccan (see comments). I'll say it again.I am not a Wiccan witch. I'm a kabbalistic Jewitch who incorporates elements of Celtic witchcraft and Native American shamanism into my practice. Celtic witchcraft is not Wicca either, even though Wicca also incorporates elements of Celtic witchcraft into its system. In other words, Celtic witchcraft and Wicca are independent of one another, though related. Wicca is a religion. Celtic witchcraft is a practice of witches with Celtic heritage who may or may not be secular and who may or may not be religious. So, I suppose one could say witchcraft, in general, is like kabbalah - there are many forms of it, and while it can constitute an independent religion of its own, it may also be practiced within the sphere of any other religion or spiritual practice. There are many eclectic witches who practice the craft within the context one of the more mainstream religions. Neither negates the other, despite

      Perspectives On Jewish Witchcraft
י"ח באייר תשס"זDov comments on Real Witchcraft:I think that Jewish perspectives on witchcraft are more complex than any one commentary's opinion, since Rambam and Ramban give very different explanations that reflect very different understandings of the spiritual universe. That said, it's not necessarily prohibited to read books about people doing things that Jews are prohibited from doing. We can enjoy the books and learn lessons from them even if it would be prohibited for us to engage in the same magic ourselves. As Dov writes, Jewish perspectives on witchcraft are complex and not unitarily understood. Witchcraft itself is complex and not a homogenous method of practice. There are many ways to be a witch and to practice witchcraft. While some of those ways may be prohibited to Jews, I don't accept that all of them are necessarily prohibited to Jews. From what Dov writes, I gather that he accepts as prohibited whatever his rabbi tells him is prohibited. I don't. While advi

Magic Witchcraft and Ghosts in the Greek and Roman Worlds
In a culture where the supernatural possessed an immediacy now strange to us, magic was of great importance both in the literary and mythic tradition and in ritual practice. Recently, ancient magic has hit a high in popularity, both as an area of scholarly inquiry and as one of general, popular interest. In Magic, Witchcraft, and Ghosts in the Greek and Roman Worlds Daniel Ogden presents three hundred texts in new translations, along with brief but explicit commentaries. This is the first book in the field to unite extensive selections from both literary and documentary sources. Alongside descriptions of sorcerers, witches, and ghosts in the works of ancient writers, it reproduces curse tablets, spells from ancient magical recipe books, and inscriptions from magical amulets. Each translation is followed by a commentary that puts it in context within ancient culture and connects the passage to related passages in this volume. Authors include the well known (Sophocles, Herodotus, Plato,

Why is Wicca Witchcraft so popular?
Wicca witchcraft is said to be the fastest growing religion amongst high school and college students in America. It is also now practiced by people in many different walks of life, including professionals like lawyers and teachers.Wiccans practice what they call White magic, which they believe is ‘good’ and differs from the ‘bad’ black magic. The motivation behind getting involved in wicca is not sinister in any way. The people involved are wanting to tap into the good “forces” in nature, and direct them in a positive manner. They are seeking the ‘power’ to be able to perform good magic, and often times to also find a popular group to belong to. The number of witches covens is increasing daily. Wiccans promote good moral values like honesty.Books like the Harry Potter series
