      Ok, Wired, Let’s Do This.
A week ago Wired Magazine voiced its displeasure over our syndication partnership with the Washington Post. S'pore homes to be wired up with fibre optic link
May 9, 2008 S'pore homes to be wired up with fibre optic link Both bidders for next-gen broadband network propose this lightning-speed technology By Alfred Siew BESIDES phone and cable points, Singapore homes will soon get one more jack in the wall - for a thin fibre optic cable to hook up to ultra-fast broadband. The technology, called Fibre To The Home (FTTH), has been proposed by the two consortia bidding to build the island's new cyber highways. When ready in as early as two years, it promises an almost infinite speed boost for years to come, enabling people to enjoy 'life-like' video-conferencing or download a movie in mere minutes. In the past two years, several technologies have been put up as possible upgrades to Singapore's existing broadband networks. But fibre optics now appear

Moreover, these distinctive infant features, unlike the mature features of an adult, trigger a sense of reward and good feeling in a seventh of a second. Any time I find an interesting article that could potentially be useful, I like to share it. This one is a bit funnier than usual. I was wasting time until I bumped into an article about how to stop wasting time, and a couple (free) tools to aid in this quest. The Web is replacing the TV as the #1 time-thief in our lives. And, unlike the TV, the Web does not respect the boundaries of work. Thus the time you spend on the web "working" is inherently intertwined with the time you spend "playing."I will undoubtedly use Temptation Blocker during my "productive times" and see if it actually helps. Have You Got Your Holiday Shopping Wired?
Wired magazine came out with a “How To Hack The Holidays” article last Friday and I’ve got to say I’m mighty impressed. Aside from the standard holiday advice and the “expert” tips that are available on thousands (if not millions) of websites for easy finding via search engines, they actually had some pretty solid advice I hadn’t stumbled across before. Here’s a brief rundown of their points with some comments of my own- Start shopping early. - Um, duh. Sign up for newsletters. - Solid advice that’s been around as long as the ‘net. Many stores have specials that are only ‘advertised’ in their newsletters. Use coupon codes. - I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - never buy from any online store without first Googling “{store name} coupon codes”. Get the jump on Black Friday. - Black Friday ads have been out online for a month already. If you haven’t started checking ‘e

      Wired For Savings
I think it is fair to say that we all shop differently. Some people live for the shopping mall experience, some revile it. I fall into the group - perhaps a fair amount of the male persuasion does — that tends to take a stealth approach to shopping. That is, I need something, I go into a store, I buy it, I leave — that’s it. Call it the James Bond approach. Now for this technique to come to full fruition, I need a high-tech gadgets to help me, say a web-connected phone. Say I’m Christmas shopping and I am waiting in line at Best Buy or something with the latest piece of technology under my arm and I want to see if I have the best deal possible. I have a good ten minutes to kill while waiting in line anyway so, I go online (on my phone), do a search for tech bargains and come with TechBargains.Com (not a far stretch, I imagine) and come up with some rebate offers or coupons for the item under my arm! Apparently Wired Has Never Heard Of Radio
The writers at Wired’s How To Wiki apparently have never heard of radio. At least according to this article, Cheat the Music Industry: Never Pay for Music- Despite the continual legal pursuit of music file-sharing “criminals” by the “RIAA ( )”<>, the ability to find great music and create a significant music library at virtually no cost is still quite feasible. So we’ll start by dividing this into categories and giving a few examples of what we know. But it’s up to you to fill in the blanks. They then go on to list a number of legal, but cheap methods; free, but illegal methods; and mostly legal, mostly free methods for acquiring music. Somehow they completely missed the method that is both 100% free and 100% legal: radio. Makes me wonder if I should keep using Wired as a source… none

A quick link to a pretty fantastic article by Wired contributor Lore Sjöberg who engages in some creative wine gadget imagineering. Some of his proposed creations sound pretty freakin’ cool. Automatic Wine Twirler The first thing you do with a glass of wine is swirl it. I’m led to understand that there are sound gastronomic reasons for this, but mostly it just gives you a chance to lift your glass and wordlessly say, “I AM GOING TO DRINK SOME WINE NOW.” Each variety (or, in wine jargon, “varietal”) of wine has an optimal rate of rotation, or it will as soon as I make up a little chart. This glass, then, is set on a rotating stem, and buttons on the base allow you to swirl your wine appropriately with but a touch. Also, the whirring is soothing. No, Lore, you had it right the first time. Variety is the correct term. Varietal is mainly used as an adjective (”This wine has outstanding varietal character”), and only in one specific case as a

      Wired Love
Still looking for that perfect gal, or guy, whatever the case may be? Your friends may hook you up with a certain individual in a party this Halloween or maybe some other time. But the problem with this arrangement is that you would start from scratch. Meaning you don’t know the other person and there is that big chance that you might not like her or him at all. Being a blog reader and possibly a blogger on your own, I am sure that you spend a lot of time on the wired world. So why not put the Internet to good use and use it to look for that gal or guy for you? Here’s one that I found to be really cool. Date.com is one of those online dating services out there in the Web. But Date as we are gonna call it from hereon in is not “just one” of the hordes of online dating services today. Just like other sites, it asks you where you live and all that stuff. They will also ask you to register first but its not really a hustle as all you need to do is create a use

You can be Green and Wired...
Being on the water and close to nature it makes sense to me that I should do what I can to help preserve those resources. If not for my own personal enjoyment then for the enjoyment of my daughter. Going Green is the buzzword these days but to be honest my family has been going green for years. It started with can collecting, we would collect cans each summer on the beach and be able to pay for our vacation to Florida. We have a compost pile and my sister raises composting worms. If you are looking for ways to go green you can take a look at a site I found called GreenandMore.com. There they have eco friendly products for purchase and much more. I explored the site for a while and many of the products are very interesting (I really want the hydrogen race car). I looked through the baby products because we just had our first child. They have a diaper bag that is made from truck and tractor tire inner tubes. It is a stylish and functional black bag for both moms and dads. GreenandMore is

WiFi SUCKS I Am Going Back to my wired connections.
Everyone jumped on board with Wi-Fi lickety split when it came out. And hey I am one of them. It was supposed to be the technology of the future - wasn't it??I ran my 802.11a when it was in draft and I thought it was really cool. And around the time 802.11b came out it actually became usable for surfing the net. Mind you it is at its best a 10 mbps connection and in all actuality it was a slight fraction of this. I had been suffering from horrible interference on my home phone and wifi and recently found a solution to the phone portion. If I could solve one problem why not the other. So I started changing channels on my router moving the base station and still I would go from a solid 54g connection to a crawl and then dead in the water until I do a repair. I updated wi-fi drivers, I flashed roms, I got repeaters, antennas I swear I did everything. We covered all the common wifi problems here if you want to look them over.My poor Tivo and Media centers were the ones suffering (edit: al

Wired Kayaker at Blog World Expo
I'm going to take my show on the road and head out to Blog World Expo in November. I just need to find a place to stay. I've often wanted to stay at the Excalibur Las Vegas because I am a big King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table fan. I collect a ton of books about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, so why not stay in a hotel that has that theme. It sounds like a great place for me to be during Blog World EXpo.

      Wired for Pink...
You might have noticed a bit of a color change around here. I decided to go Pink for October. Breast Cancer awareness is important to me as well as to Allison. We decided to get out blogs into a pink theme for the month of October. I learned about this project through Joana of Nanashi-Inc.net. So if you want to show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness for the month of October set your theme to Pink.Even though it is Breast Cancer awareness month, I have a project of my own to help raise money for a family whose whole lives has been affected by Cancer. I created a 2008 Photo-A-Day Calendar and I am giving 2/3 of the profits to the Machinski Family. My goal is to sell 100 calendars before November 24th and raise $200.00 to give to the Machinski family. Becky Machinski was a classmate of mine in High School and both she and her husband have both battled Cancer. Becky's Cancer is gone but her husband Mike is still battling Cancer and it has depleted their savings. I can't imagine ho

Is the Wired Kayaker a Big Deal?
I am a big deal blogger and deserve to win this funny t-shirt and win $500 because...I have not seen another one the water podcast before and I also got featured in my local newspaper. So I guess I may just be a big deal. Before you go thinking I have gotten a waterlogged swelled head let me tell you that I am just playing. I am not a big deal, I'm just a guy who brought his camera on his boat and started talking. And then that camera died. I'd love to get a new one so I can get back out there and film and $500.00 would certainly help me do that. There is this competition going on at FuelMyBlog where I could possibily win a T-Shirt or even $500.00 from SnorgTees.com.This is another one of those voting contests and in the last one I came in 4th. That is good enough to get me a T-Shirt this time around, but $500.00 would certainly be nice. So if you think I am kind of a Big Deal or even if you think I am not and am just full of myself, please vote for me in this .Join the Blog Rush.Hel

Arkanoid DS and Space Invaders Extreme Previews by Wired
Wired's Game Life Blog by Chris Kohler has posted some hands-on previews of Arkanoid DS and Space Invaders Extreme. The two classic reinvsioned titles from Taito will be the first two games released that support the new paddle peripheral for the Nintendo DS. An exerpt from the two previews are below. Follow the links to read the full write-up.Hands-On: Why Taito's DS Paddle Controller Rocks So Hard Taito, one of Japan's first game makers, is set to release a truly fantastic accessory for the Nintendo DS. Later this year, the DS version of the classic block-breaking game Arkanoid will include a Paddle Controller. It plugs into the DS' bottom media slot and lets you spin the dial to control the paddle at the bottom of the screen with the same pinpoint precision you remember from your arcade days. That much, we already knew. But here's what I only found out when I got my hands on it: it's fantastic. It's not just a little plastic dial. It's sitting on ball bearings or something,

Wired Kayaker at Blog World Expo 2007
So, I am going to go to blog World Expo and will most likely be attending PostieCon while I am there as well as doing a road trip with the guys from FuelMyBlog. Oh and I also have a baby on the way. The due date for the baby is October 20th. I am hoping for a bit of an early bird for selfish reasons, I want my two weeks with the baby before I head to Las Vegas. It is bad enough I'm going to be there for my 2nd anniversary. I'm going to have to hit it big when I get out there so I can make it up to her.I think most of my plans are going to firm up in the next few weeks, I am excited and fortunate for some opportunities. There is a great contest being done by FuelMyBlog and Blog World Expo right now where they are giving away a free pass to Blog World Expo. since I am already going I am not entering. But I want to tell you how easy it is to enter. First of all you need to write a post that states "If I win fuelmyblog's prize and win the ticket to go to BlogWorld Expo, I would like to

Buzz Aldrin plays BrainBall at Wired's NextFest
NextFest (http://wirednextfest.com/inform/event_overview.php) is Wired Magazine's (http://www.wired.com) four-day festival of innovative products and technologies. We blogged about MindBall last year, which is the commercialized version of Brainball. BrainBall is a game created by Interactive Institute. Players of the game have EEG sensors connected to their forehead with a strap. The electrodes in the strap read the players' brainwaves. Brainball is a game that goes against the conventional competitive concept, and also reinvents the relationship between man and machine. Instead of activity and adrenalin, it is passivity and calmness that mark the truly successful Brainball player. Brainball is unique amongst machines since it is not controlled by the player's rational and strategic thoughts and decisions. On the contrary, the participants are dependent on the body's own intuitive reactions to the game machine. At first glance, Brainball seems similar to a traditio

Setting up a Network -- Wired or Wireless?
By Deryck RichardsTo Wire or Not to Wire Wireless networks are en vogue, but your installation won’t be successful unless you chose the right type of network and set it up properly. Wired networks require that each computer be connected via a wire to a central location, called a switch or hub. This often involves installing cables through walls and ceilings and can present a challenge for anyone. If the computers in your home or office are all within 500 feet of each other, a wireless network might be for you. A wireless network has no cables. It can connect computers on different floors of a building or even across the street. Aside from the obvious benefit of not having wires, wireless networks are more convenient since the setup, configuration, and reconfiguration can often be done within minutes, without extensive planning. Wireless networks, however, are not as fast as wired networks. If you play computer games or want to view streaming video or other high-speed multimedia, a wi
