I spend a fair bit of time travelling in cold climate countries. The coldest I’ve ever been was in Oslo (Norway) in mid-January, when one night the temperature dipped to -18 C. I learned that at that temperature it doesn’t matter how many layers you have on, how fast you walk to warm up or [...]
I spent the most wonderful rainy afternoon last month in Nara with Juliet Winters Carpenter, the famed translator, writer and professor of humanities at Doshisha Women’s University in Kyoto. I was fortunate to meet Juliet a couple of years ago...

Mark Hebert has the story:Louisville Teens Get Civics LessonA group of Louisville teenagers is getting lesson in civics, the hard way. They're finding plenty of roadblocks as they try to get lawmakers to pass a resolution recommending Kentucky schools provide the study of the Holocaust in their coursework. The students from St. Francis of Assisi managed to get their resolution through the House but it's been stalled in the Senate Education Committee......But their teacher, Fred Whittaker, says the students ran into a brick wall when trying to lobby Senators David Williams and Ken Winters on the value of their bill. According to Whittaker, Williams wouldn't discuss it with them, referring the students to Winters, who is chairman of the Education Committee. Winters referred them to Williams,
If it had always puzzled you as to why flu and common colds are so common in winter, then scientists think they have solved this mystery. According to new research, it has been found that the flu/influenza virus coats itself in a protective fatty shield that is tough enough to withstand cold temperatures. The butter-like material only melts when it hits the respiratory tract, leaving the
Mumbai,India: February has been quite chilly for those living in India's financial hub Mumbai. Infact, it has been so cold this time around that records have been broken. Mumbai recorded it's second lowest temperature(8.5 degrees) in it's history this month. The lowest ever recorded was 7.4 degrees celcius. However, when the temperature dropped to 8.5, two records were made. One was of the second lowest temperature recorded in the city and the other was of beating the capital New Delhi in terms of minimum temperature in a day, which had never happened until now. Mumbaities aren't used to covering themselves in wind cheaters and sweaters but this time around it's a different scene altogether. Mumbai is experiencing such cold weather after so long!North India is reeling under severe cold as
There are a few signs that make me realize Winter is upon us in just a few short days... The last few weeks here in Southern California we have been Freezing, Ok low 60's in the day and 30's at night. I know for those of you who live in the midwest and east have been just slammed with Snow, sleet, rain and cold. I am NOT complaining after our HOT summer and Fall it is much appreciated. The Ivy I have all around our Pool, dropping all of its leaves and putting itself to sleep. My roses out front all cut back and going to sleep. My Ugg purse coming out of its box to see the light of winter! Now my most Favorite thing from this up and coming Winter Starbucks New Shortbread Latte... Yummmmm, Are you starting to settle into this upcoming Winter season? *Jamie*
I have been shopping for a “winter” jacket for quite some time now. One can mock me for the word “winter” as temperatures rarely drops lower than 50F (10C) around here. In any event my Rev’t Airforce does not cut it for that type of temperatures especially if it is windy. Some time ago Motodisiac and I went to see the Supermoto racing event at Morongo Casino. And on our way back I got really cold. With temperature just below 60F (16C), howling winds, and the summer riding jacket that barely covered my lower back I almost did not feel like riding anymore. I could not lean forward to keep my profile low because every time I’d do that my lower back would freeze up in no time. And when I was upright I was violently attacked by winds and my whole upper body would feel cold. Between a frozen lower back and moderately cold upper body I chose latter. So there I was riding upright like a telegraph pole. Long story short under the circumstances we made a pit s
It is fairly common knowledge that Paul and I turned a dream into reality when we moved here to get away from winter.I really had no idea what was in store for us – I just trusted that this is where we needed to be and followed that feeling. I have learned so much and met so many interesting people by moving to San Pedro (in person and online).I chat with a lot of people on the internet (especially since I joined the message board and started my blog). They all have a different spin on why they keep coming back, or want to move here someday and what they get from the San Pedro / Ambergris Caye experience. Here is a piece from Hannah (age 10) who moved here with her mom dad and younger sister and her insight about spending her first Winter on a tropical island. Winters Change by HannahSome how, it feels like Christmas. It gets dark early and I am usually wearing a sweater. The palm trees are always swaying in the wind there are waves pounding on the reef. Instead of air conditioning
Last night I began browsing through many handbags and when I saw this bag I loved it. It was the style of the bag that caught my attention. It is the Bulga Helmet Bag. Just from looking at the bag you can see it is an everyday bag. The Helmet bag is big enough to hold all your essentials plus more and the leather is so soft. The best thing I like about this bag is that the strap is adjustable so you can wear it over your shoulders or you can adjust the bag to wear it on you arms as arm candy. This bag comes in many different colors so you have a huge selection to pick from. The Helmet Bag retails for $840 and it’s one of Bulga’s most popular bags right now so don’t miss out.

This morning the Herald-Leader reports, "With five weeks to form a government, Gov.-elect Steve Beshear plans a series of announcements starting today on key appointments in his administration." Ryan Alessi's article does not mention the Education Cabinet Secretary but did mention GOP state Sen. Lindy Casebier of Louisville and Sen. Tom Buford, R-Nicholasville as being receptive to discussions.Yesterday, a Frankfort insider told KSN&C that Beshear was talking to Ken Winters about the education post. Senator Winters (R) presently serves in District 1 which includes Calloway, Carlisle, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Trigg, & Lyon counties an area Fletcher failed to carry. From Governor-elect Steve Beshear's perspective, this is a good move. First, the Education Secretary is one of those "best jobs in Frankfort." Long on meetings and speeches; short on actual responsibility. The source also opined that Winters has had about enough of Senate President David Williams' stranglehold on the
One of the best things about the region of Andalucia is its weather. This stunning area of Spain has some of the best in Spain and with an around 300-330 days of sunshine per year it makes a perfect destination for everyone.
The area has three very distinctive weather zones but one thing is certain , you can enjoy long hot summers and pleasant winters . It is a wonderful area where in winter you can sunbath on the costal resorts in the morning and within 2 hours you can be skiing down the slops of the Sierra Nevada’s.
The Coastal Zone - Málaga, Cádiz, Huelva, Almería
These areas are known for their hot summers where sun bathing is possible almost every day between the beginning of June tight though to the end of September although in recent years the summer season has extended to between May and October. During this time there is hardly and rain and it is possible to wear short sleeves and shorts all the time including evenings while in the winter months a pullover or jacket
INDIANAPOLIS (TICKER) — The Indiana Fever on Friday declined their option on the contract of coach Brian Winters. The 55-year-old Winters, whose club had a 78-58 record over his four seasons, led Indiana to a 21-13 record in 2007, the third straight year the Fever reached that mark. “After much discussion this postseason, we came to the conclusion that a new voice is needed to take over the direction of the team,” Fever general manager Kelly Krauskopf said. “Brian has been a good coach for more…
When I went shopping this morning, I was – once again – struck by a sensation that might best be described as an odd mixure of déjà-vu and unscheduled time travel.
I noticed that the department store had just launched the billboard campaign that we created for them 4 months ago. In early summer.
That is probably one of the strangest things on planet advertising: Due to handling times and long production processes, the seasons get all mixed up. In summer, we brainstorm about christmas campaigns and in deep winter we travel to the southern hemisphere to shoot commercials in the sun.
It’s like living in two shifted time zones. Very confusing.
Anyway, I gotta go now. Buy a christmas tree.
Well it turns out that San Diego Padres outfielder Milton Bradley has been vindicated by MLB. The Commissioners office announced on Wednesday they have suspended umpire Mike Winters for the rest of the season for allegedly using a profanity against Bradley during Sunday's contest between San Diego and the Colorado Rockies. The result was Bradley going nuclear and having to be wrestled to the ground by San Diego manager Bud Black causing Bradley to tear his ACL. The Padres organization say that Winters was trying to bait Bradley, and MLB apparently agrees hence the suspension. Now, two things, first of all "suspended for the season" in this case is not too dramatic, the season ends this Sunday, we are not talking 100 games here! Secondly, I want to publicly apologize to Milton Bradley for assuming the worst and that the responsibility lay with him. It turns out Milton, that this time you were provoked, but the bottom line still is who lost worse? By allowing this "bully" to get a rise
Snow was blowing in the Montana skies, when early morning arrived Jeph andSkip had to get up early to go check on the horses, make sure they werewarm enough from the bitter Montana winds. They worked hard for several hours, milking the cows, brushing and feedingthe horses. We had a lovely trip to Toledo courtesy of my father and sisters. They had even purchased a hotel room for the night so we we spent the morning puttering around the city. I knew there was an H&M there, so I wanted to visit if only to see what all the fuss is about. Well, I'm a convert. It's probably a good thing I don't live nearer one; I can see inordinate portions of my paycheck going in their general direction. I found skinny pants that work for me! Not only that, I bought a pair in the only better than cordoroy: YELLOW cordoroy. They are the awesomeness, I'm sure. We also found these lovely green votives on clearance at Pottery Barn. They had them for Christmas; I can see the color working quite well in the springtime. When we arrived home, I was thrilled to discover a package from the lovely katybird. I was thrilled to find a pair of red flats; I've been obsessed with red shoes, and wanting more flats. Perfectness!

Brrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...Well now that I'm in a warmer part of the country the "Bitter Cold" won't bother me as much as it would normally... But I spend most of my time sleeping and working in one place in the house that is not heated and instead of buying an expensive electric oil filled heater I am thinking of going for the Kandle Heeter... It's a pretty cool idea and very cheap, tho I am not totally sure how well it works but looking at it I can see where the theory would come into play... Check out the pic...If you go to their site you can see how simple it is and you could probably make one yourself and save a couple of dollars... Kandle Heeter Homepage... Check it out!...Need some Christmas present ideas for that Video Gamer in your family that is expecting some games for Christmas?. You can check out Amazon's List of what's out and what's coming up... Read More... As for me I'm still working on finishing the PREY Demo and Quake 4 so I'm not getting any news anytime soon..
