We left L.A. today, heading north, first to Santa Barbara and then to the Santa Barbara wine country. We drank a lot of wine. I bought a case of wine. There was a lot of giggling. And then we settled down -- to drink more wine -- in a town with a windmill. For the record, I did drink Merlot, against my better judgment.

One of the best ways to have a fun and memorable trip to California wine country is by examining all of your options. This is particularly true where wine tours are concerned. Do you want to visit wineries on your own or would you like to take a guided tour? If you would like to be a part of a guided tour, you will want to make your plans well in advance, especially if you will be visiting during peak tourism times.
It has been a busy time around Lyke2Drink. It's not an excuse for not publishing for a week, it's just my reality. There were a couple of magazine deadlines in my freelance life and a strong level of client and new business activity around the office at my day job. All of that was sandwiched around a much needed vacation.Vacation? Yup, but a busy one. There was my 47th birthday on Nov. 3rd, the 32nd anniversary of my first date with my wife, Sandy, on Nov. 2nd, and our 25th wedding anniversary on Nov. 5th. All of these milestones were celebrated during a wonderful trip to California. The good news is that the cross country journey included visits to more wineries than I can count in the Central Coast, Napa Valley and Sonoma appellations. Life is great when you can actually consider kicking back and celebrating to also be research.Over the next few days I'll give you a full report on some of the places we visited and the wine we enjoyed. Grab a corkscrew.
In this former playground of Spanish royals, wine now reigns supreme. The region is home to medieval palaces and churches, and vintages that leave connoisseurs swooning. There's a sense of serenity about these hotels, each of which nods to the past and each with an urban vibe that belies the pastoral nature of Ribera del Duero.
Daryl Sattui set out to build a modest, 8,500-square-foot winery. Millions of dollars and 120,000 square feet later, he’s king of a wine country castle complete with drawbridge, dungeons and nifty little slots for the old boiling oil trick.

Our first morning out, we went north across the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin County and the California Coast to Point Reyes National Seashore. We then headed inland to the Napa Valley, which we explored that afternoon and the next morning, before driving northwest across northern Sonoma County to the coastal town of Mendocino. After a night there, we headed back down the coast and inland at the Russian River for more wine country touring before ending up in San Francisco for our final two days.
This is the 3rd installment of a trip down memory lane about my first visit to Wine Country. You can catch up here for Episode 1 and Episode 2.

After a relatively short night that involved more coma than sleep we arose the next morning to cram in a few more things while we were in the bay area.
We first had breakfast delivered to the room and then headed out across the bridge Sausalito. I had been there once before but it was a new experience for Robin. What a cool little town Sausalito is. We walked the main street shopping here and there. We got a coffee and marveled at what it must be like to live in this place. We decided that if the 3 of us got 2 jobs each and put the 2 dogs and 1 cat to work we might be able to afford to share a garage apartment somewhere near San Francisco or Sausalito.
One of the few things I bought that wasn’t wine or chocolate was a set of photos from the Mark Reuben Gallery in Sausalito. He has a neat little store off
A recent day in Napa,I was fortunate enough to join TravelWizard.com for a great Fathers Day in Napa Valley. We toured a total of 3 private, boutique wineries located in different regions of Napa Valley not offered to the general public. There’s many invitation only estates and because of Travelwizard.com, they are available to our clients providing a experience not forgotten. After reaching Napa in about an hour aboard our private transfers we started of the day at the private estate of Kathryn Hall Vineyard’s. The Estate is beautiful combining a great balance of wine and art. The cellar was definitely the highlight of this private visit with the room’s spectacular chandelier, dressed in hundreds of Swarovski crystals.Next stop in the day was Tamber Bey winery, located in Yountville owned and lived in by Barry Waitte. The gardens in addition to the vineyard are truly spectacular and offered the utmost serenity, We were treated to a private lunch with the onsite chef and general m
If you are old enough to remember Jackie Gleason mouthing that line to orchestra leader Sam Spear, you might have a cellar full of well-aged wine. When I am not tasting wine, I am most often traveling through wine country. I travel for professional reasons and when I am not traveling to wine country in search of the next great bottle of wine, I am often found on the wine trail just for the fun of it.
I haven’t tasted this stuff so I can’t pass judgment, but I am truely interested if there is a market for it. Are people are so Pinot crazed that they will want to integrate our beloved grape into the soda pop portion of their diets?
The company that markets the product, Vignette, is located in Berkeley and they claim the Pinot Soda is made with around 50% real juice (no word on what the other 50% is), has no added sugar or corn syrup, is caffine free, and is “gently pasteurized”.
I’m not quite sure what “gently pasteurized” means myself. If you aren’t holding a juice at 161 degrees F for ~6 seconds, you can’t be sure that you’re really killing all the bacteria present, which is the whole point of pasteurization. And holding anything at high temperatures isn’t something I would think really qualifies as gentle. But hey, who are we in the wine industry to start casting stones when it comes to marketing anyway?
