The Mets Have To Turn It Around This Week - Or Goodbye WillieI said the Mets would be making a change at manager by June 15th. Desire for freedom in the air,
Passionate whispers of the needs
For acceptance, for hope and care.

Today was the nitty gritty phase of my training to set a 5K pr: Intervals.Four sets of 1,000-meters with a rest period of 3:30 in between each interval. The rest period is so you can recover, get your heart rate back to under 75 percent. It was 65 degrees. Humid. And windy. Very windy. (This is tornado season in Texas, right?)I probably should have skipped this workout on the weather alone, but off I went. And I felt good on the first interval, which I completed in 4:13. (A 6:48 minute-mile pace). This was against the wind. I was feeling confident. So on the second 1,000-meter interval, with the wind, I popped a 4:01 (6:29 pace). That's fast. But I wasn't feeling too good. I wanted to throw up and my heart rate was still over 85 percent by the time I started the third interval. And it was again

Regular readers of this column will know that I have been away for a couple of weeks or so on, what I saw as, a long deserved break. While away I tried to keep as far away from politics as possible, as politics is not only my hobby but also my day job. I think I did a fairly good job, though the temptation to sneak a peek at the BBC website and the odd blog did become too much on a couple of occasions. Anyway, they say a week is a long time in politics, and I have been out of touch with all the goings on at Westminster for nearly three - so what has changed?

Due to the steady rise in heating and cooling costs over the past decade, homeowners are taking advantage of every money saving idea that comes there way. One of the most popular methods in recent years is landscaping for energy efficiency. Shade trees that block the sun and lower air conditioning bills and privacy screens that double as wind barriers for the cold winter months have become staples in the attempt to save energy and funds through landscape.Another method that is utilized far less often, yet is every bit as effective, is foundation planting for insulation. Perennials planted alongside your home are beautiful in the summer, but planting dense shrubs will deflect cold winds from chilling your home and insulate your foundation. Not surprisingly, this simple act can lower your he

Just how civilizations have been altered by the climate is something that scientists, historians and archaeologists are happy to debate to a great extent. There is no doubt however, that climate (or rather changes in climate) has had a tremendous effect on the development (or retardation) of various historical societies.
Eugene Linden has summarized these discussions remarkably well. In
Who doesn't look outside to see what the weather is like? Is it sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy? Besides just eyes an important weather tool that has been used for centuries is the weathervane. From the Tower of the Winds in ancient Greece to barns in America's Midwest weathervanes have been perched atop the highest buildings to help the people predict the weather. In addition to foretelling the coming winds weathervanes have now become a way to decorate your home with classic style. And depending on where you live they are adorned with varying creatures and items. For example if you live on the coast you'll find weathervanes with ships, whales and other nautical things. If you live in farm country you'll find weathervanes with roosters, horses and even cows. Nowadays you can even get one with your favorite college team.Try perching them atop a cupola for added height and beauty. A cupola might even add balance to your roof if spaced evenly with the chimney or it might just help break u
Norwegian Majesty’s arrival into Charleston this weekend has been delayed by one day. The ship will now arrive Sunday, November 18, 2007 because of several factors. On her return to Charleston, Norwegian Majesty was called by the Bermuda Rescue Command Center to come to the aid of a person in a sailboat who needed immediate medical attention. The passenger is currently being treated on board the ship. Also on the return, high winds and heavy seas necessitated the ship to operate at a reduced speed. In addition, planned maintenance during the ship’s stay in Bermuda included the overhaul of a cylinder head on one of the main engines. Unfortunately, after departure, a seal on the new unit developed a minor leak and required remedial work to correct it. Even if the engine had not had this issue, the ship would not be able to go any faster than the speed she is presently doing because of the heavy seas and strong wind conditions.
In recent weeks I have spent time at numerous events with U.S. military personnel across the different services, speaking, listening and watching as the senior officers challenge the assumptions they have help on the war on terrorism, Iraq, Afghanistan and other pressing issues. One of the most innovative new concepts bubbling to the surface is that a great deal can be accomplished in pushing back against Islamist radicals, transnational criminal groups, warlords and militias by recognizing these...(read more)
The combination of heavy wet snow, gusty winds and leaves still on the trees this late in the season has set up a potentially dangerous situation across the region Tuesday into Wednesday. Here is a state I saw from one of the local weather offices:
…TREE AND POWER LINE DAMAGE IS POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT FROM AN EARLY SEASON LAKE EFFECT SNOW EVENT…
HEAVY WET SNOW MIXED WITH RAIN AT TIMES IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THIS AFTERNOON AND OVERNIGHT IN THE SNOWBELT EAST OF CLEVELAND. SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED WHICH WILL ACCUMULATE ON TREES AND POWERLINES. IN ADDITION WESTERLY WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 40 MPH CAN BE EXPECTED.
THE RECENT MILD WEATHER HAS DELAYED THE NORMAL TREE DEFOLIATION THUS LEAVING TREES MORE VULNERABLE TO EXCESSIVE LOADING OF SNOW AND SLUSH. THE HEAVY SNOW WILL LIKELY BRING DOWN MANY TREES AND POWERLINES… BLOCKING ROADS AND CAUSING POWER OUTAGES.
If you have to be traveling today please use extreme caution. It takes awhile

That is the title of a song by the Scorpions. Its such a beautiful song, and I’ve always sang along to it (when I’m ALONE) But I never realized how difficult those changes might be. Sometimes changes can be things that we have waited and prayed for for years, but other times it entails things that we never thought possible. And never think we will survive. Things which make us feel out of control, and a bit freaked out.
I’m again referring to the job changes that I’ve been through these last two months. It is scary. To start at a new place. Each time I am reminded of how vulnerable I can actually feel. Going through the heartbreak that relationships can sometimes cause I thought nothing could ever scare me more. But being unsure of where your next pay check is going to come from has to be right there at the top of the list too. It suddenly makes one realize that nothing is actually in your control. Things change so quickly without giving us enough

22- And We send the fecundating winds. 15-Hijr, 22 Research conducted on physical phenomena and plants demonstrated the importance of the fecundating property of winds. Winds play a role in the reproduction of plants by transporting small reproductive bodies produced in pollen sacs of the seed plants. The winds have also the character of fecundating the rain clouds, another essential factor for life on earth. Before rising to the upper layers of the atmosphere, the gaseous suspension of ultramicroscopic particles of a liquid called aerosol, generated by foaming in seas and other waters, gets mixed with the dust that the winds sweep from the lands. These particles combine with water vapor that condenses around these particles. Had it not been for these particles, one hundred per cent water vapor could not form the cloud. The formation of clouds is the consequence of the winds’ formation of the water vapor in suspension with the fecundating particles they carry. Had the winds failed to
Hardbeatnews, MIAMI, FL, Sat. Aug. 18, 2007: Hurricane Dean late last night continued to strengthen over the eastern Caribbean, packing 145 mph winds to reach a category four on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Garcia battled against some fairly strong winds to maintain his lead in the British Open.
Sergio Garcia still has a two stroke lead after he played nine holes at Carnoustie today.
Last night Garcia was at six under par at 65. Today it looked for a moment as if he was going to drop a shot after he went into the thick rough on the 406-yard first hole.
However somehow, magically, Garcia was able to float the ball up and on to the putting green in one shot with his most lofted wedge and the ball went within a foot of the hole. It was then easy to tap the ball in for par.
Other events of the day saw the American golfer Jim Furyk, who won the US Open in 2003, joining McGinley at four under par. However he lost ground at the 10th, 466 yard hole.
What did you think of today’s golf action in the British Open?

30th Year of Fireworks by Grucci in New LondonI thought there would be a photo of fireworks on this post. I wasn't counting on light winds from the southwest that had their own ideas about fireworks. Several hundred people gathered in the parking lots near the Submarine Veteran's Memorial in Groton. Thousands of others were on the banks of the river along Thames Street. Over 100,000 people come from all over New England to view the event as part of New London's Sailfest event. Our spot was seemingly perfect. I've watched fireworks from the same vantage before. It was 9:25 and the very first of the shells exploded. It was a spectacular start as we've come to expect from a Grucci performance. But those southwest winds blew the smoke from the fireworks in our direction and stubbornly drifted between the fireworks and thousands of people watching. For about 10 minutes there was silence from the spectators in our parki

Welcome to The Jaunt's Fantasy Friday column. Each Friday we'll talk about a variety of fantasy topics. We'll be covering basketball, baseball, and when the time comes, football. Hockey, golf, NASCAR? Never heard of 'em... Fantasy BaseballLast week I mentioned a trade offer, Hunter Pence for Chone Figgins, I made in one of my leagues. After two days of silence I pulled the offer back and tried to make a bigger splash. I posted on the league’s message board that I would trade Roy Halladay, who went on the DL after getting an appendectomy, dirt cheap. My real intent was not to give Halladay a way for nothing but to gage who was in the market for the sidelined ace. That day I got one offer for Greg Maddux and one offer for Nate Robertson. Pretty laughable, but it gave me a starting point. Eventually I got an owner who was highly interested and after some back and forth talks settled on this trade: Sending: Roy Halladay, Hanley Ramirez, and Alex RiosReceiving: Adam Dunn, Rafael Fur
Despite having been written in 1957, The Winds of Time remains an interesting twist on the usual time travel novel because these time travelers don’t use any sort of time machine to project themselves more than 15,000 years into the future. Rather, they use a potent drug to place themselves into suspended animation and let time itself travel at its normal pace. When they awaken, they are in the future. But all is not well. Doctor Wes Chase, on a fishing vacation with his wife in Colorado, has his life forever changed when he is taken prisoner near a remote mountain lake by one of a group of aliens who crash landed on Earth some 15.000 years before his fateful encounter with them. When they crashed, these explorers, who closely resembled Earthlings, had been on a mission to find another race of men with whom they could partner up for the good of both groups. They quickly realized that Earth humans were in such a primitive stage of development that their only chance to ever see
HIGH WINDS FELL TREES, CLOSE ROADS VDOT crews across Central Virginia clearing debris in wake of storm CULPEPER – Crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation have been working since late Sunday evening to clear trees and branches from area roadways. With wind gusts as high as 60 miles per hour reported across Central Virginia, many roads have been closed by power lines, fallen trees and other debris. Culpeper District VDOT maintenance managers estimated that crews have responded to several hundred reports of uprooted and broken trees felled by the winds as well as branches and other debris blocking the roads. VDOT crews are coordinating their work with utility companies since some of the trees were tangled with power lines as they fell, creating dangerous conditions for motorists and emergency responders alike. A VDOT truck was struck by a falling tree in Albemarle County , no one was injured in that incident. With the high winds forecast to cont
Teenagers change their mind. If one thing is for certain it is that teenagers don't always realize what they truly want to do until the last minute. While one choice may look more lucrative than another, the situation may change as time passes. Schools such as Fresno State may receive verbal commitments from recruits only to have the recruit retract their statement at a later date. Many may wonder why a recruit would possibly do something of this sort and honestly can you blame a young man? When recruiting reaches the final weeks schools such as Washington, USC, and UCLA may lose out on a recruit they counted on acquiring. When this happens it leads these BCS tier schools to search elsewhere for a quick replacement. A school such as Fresno State is liable to take a hit more so than any other mid-major school in the nation because of the level of recruits the Bulldogs continually get. Schools like Fresno State have to worry that another program such as Washington will swoop in and
We fared better than a lot of people during yesterday’s storms but the high winds did play havoc with our neighbours’ fences. On each side, fences were flattened but, fortunately, we escaped with no damage to life or limb.
It seems amazing to me that people lose their lives during such storms but when you see [...]
I started to write a blog entry about what a great year it’s been for me and all I could think about is what a difficult year it’s been for much of my family for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately life’s roller coaster brings ups and downs for all of us at different times, and there’s no way I can feel like I’ve had the best year of my life when some of the people I love may have had the worst year of theirs. I’ve found that some things are beyond my ability to comprehend or accept, and when I’m faced with those things I just try to let go a little and realize I am not in control of any of it. The best I can do is pray in my own way and be there when they need me. I think about every one of you every day.
Well another day at Halton; there was no swapping of boats, kit or people to head off to better things this time because the water wasn't coming over the whole weir at the get in. This in all honesty means that the grade 3/4 gems of Sedburgh, like the Clough and Rawthey wouldn't be up. So I stayed at Halton with the rest of the club. I had managed to persuade one of my paddling buddies to drop the club's Eskimo Topolino Duo off at my house on the Saturday so I had that to keep me entertained on what has become a very familiar stretch of rapids.Logistics were somewhat complicated seen as I had two boats, three seats and one person, myself, to get up the river to the rapids. It worked out that I shoved my All Star deck in my All Star and paddled the Topolino Duo up the river, towing my play boat from my chest harness. Once at the rapids I deposited the All Star on the island. I waited around for a while to see if there were any prospective candidates to go in the Topolino Duo, b
We know this is a bit dated data but we thought it might be of some interest to our readersFriday Report: Dec. 8, 2006As 2006 winds down, so will trading activity, but lower volumes also mean greater price volatility, market nervousness, and uncertainty as to the direction metals are heading based on the latest macro-economic indicators…add to that this week's options expirations (aluminum) and the on-going supply worries surrounding nickel, zinc, and tin, and you've more than enough to keep folks guessing…at any rate, Monday saw LME aluminum hit a multi-month high before backing off…copper held steady…nickel was off a little while lead and zinc were stronger…and in New York, March Comex copper settled up 40 points @ $3.1760, January crude oil fell…on Wall Street, the Dow gained…yep, December's going to be a fun month for both fundamentalists and technical traders…For entire story click here
Today the ferocious winds are still blowing. Everything that wasn't tied down on our deck got either knocked down, blown around, or blown away. My wind chimes outside my window where my computer desk sits are going crazy. The big-mother-chime has a long metal piece which hangs down from the middle. Every now and then a gust will blow this hard metal right into the window, and the sound is as if a bullet is hitting my window. I jump out of my skin every time this happens! To say I am disturbed by these aggravating winds is putting it mildly! The windsurfers are probably ecstatic. After writing this first paragraph, it struck me the smart thing to do would be to walk outside and simply take down the chimes! And so I will! I just did it. Ahhh....no more bullet sounds. If all of life's annoyances were this simple. Most every day an annoyance enters my life. Such is life. Depending upon the size of the annoyance, I am either mildly annoyed or hugely stressed. The list is endless: where di
The trees along any beach area are always whipped by the wind. This cluster of palms along a tropical beach somewhere in the Caribbean show how the branches are thrown around and are at the mercy of the winds. Each branch is whipped around which makes the palm trees look alive as if they are dancing. This pen and ink/watercolor painting done in 2005 is my entry for Illustration Friday's theme of "Wind".
The odds of being struck by a tree were much higher in my area on the 18th of January last, when we were bombarded by high winds for a short spell during the day. I took my car to the shops and found a nice close parking space when I got back. Two hours later I discovered a motor bike had toppled over and landed on my car bonnet - cue another car insurance claim. As long as I can claim form
Cross WindsAnother beautiful day with fresh ninety degree crosswinds and a bare/dry runway. A good day to brush up my crosswind technique.Cross WordsMy link to the COPA entry on the Belnan airport fracas attracted a number of visitors. I don't know what motives drove these visitors but from the key words used it seems some were against the airport development. I did some searching and was able to find an articles in the Chronicle Herald, this one and this one from the CBC about it. There are some interesting quotes in the Chronicle Herald from the antagonists. Mr. Johnson, the airport developer, is quoted as saying:I'm not going to tell everyone my game plan. You don't ask businesses to give away their business plans. But I can assure you, it's nothing for the citizens to get concerned about.Which is an understandable position, but not one that will instill a lot of confidence in the non-flying public. Mr. Ripley, a member of a citizens' group opposing the airport, said:We have
Sponsor This PostA casino in Macau has been ordered to pay out nearly $100,000 (£51,000) in prize money won by a 16-year-old girl who was too young to enter the casino. The Sands Casino had said the win was invalid because the girl was underage. But gambling authorities in the Chinese territory said the rules only specified a minimum age for entering the casino, not for gambling once inside. The prize is to go to the girl's mother and the laws are to be rewritten to close the age loophole. The 16-year-old girl from Hong Kong, whose name has not been released, was given the equivalent of about $12 by her grandmother as a Lunar New Year present to play on the slot machines in nearby Macau. She went to the Sands Casino with her mother and grandmother and put all her money into one slot machine. The winning combination came up, but the casino refused to pay out when staff discovered the girl was under 18.Macau's gambling watchdog, the Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau, overruled the
