It really bugs me sometimes that Microsoft imposes artificial limitations on Windows versions because they think features are out of scope. Case in point is Windows Server 2008. Now, there is no earthly reason why WS2008 can’t support Bluetooth right out of the box. An yet, because someone on the Server team decided that servers don’t use Bluetooth, if you’re one of the thousands of people w
IT decision-makers give the server operating system a qualified thumbs up and plan to move to it as part of the normal server refresh cycle, which typically ranges from three to five years. It may look like Windows Vista. It shares the same code base as Vista. It even rolls in Vista's first Service Pack. But in terms of customer adoption plans, Windows Server 2008 is no Vista. Software Restriction Policies allow you to control the execution of certain programs. It's an excellent feature to use on terminal servers or machines serving as a public kiosk, so users are locked into one specific function and can't mess with administrative tools or Internet applications and utilities. Core is cool, but a bit of GUI can help a lot: At first look, developing a GUI utility for configuration of Windows Server Core might sound quite absurd. Alas, the whole point of Server Core is a cut down version of Server OS without the overhead of GUI and having some GUI tool to help you configure it would be like walking backwards. Yet, if you look back at various blogs and articles, you will see that there is a repeating pattern: there is more-or-less predefined set of tasks that you need to do in order to get the installation of Server Core up and running (activation, IP and firewall configuration, domain join, feature installation, configuration of Remote Desktop and etc...). All the tasks are performed at command line, but there is no single utility/interface and for each task yo

This article describes the syntax that you use to build answer files to perform unattended installations of Active Directory Domain Services on Windows Server 2008-based domain controllers. Performing an unattended installation using an answer file is not as hard as it sounds, and can be performed without any user interaction. Using the answer (or sometimes referred to as the unattend) file eliminates the need for an administrator to interact with the DCPROMO wizard, and is most important when using a server core machine to act as a DC. One method of creating the unattend file is by manually copying a sample text and pasting it into a text file. You can read more about this process in the next section below. Another method of creating the file is by running the DCPROMO wizard on a differe
