One of the best things about Windows Home Server is the ability to extend its "out-of-the-box" functionality by the use of add-ins, just like you can with you with your web browser. The Advanced Admin Console Add-In is a cool one for WHS Admins to have. With this, you can quickly jump to Administrative areas from within the Home Server Console including the Control Panel, Printers & Faxes, Administrative Tools, Start Menu, My Computer, My Network Places, Workgroup, and Network Connections. Additionally, this add-in lets you launch a Command Prompt, PowerShell, Task Manager, and the Registry Editor. This is great add-in for IT Professionals who are already familiar with running Windows Server 2003, as it gives you access to more advanced functions. Because the extra funct

This weekend I completed the roll-out of my new HP MediaSmart Server running Windows Home Server. I ordered the HP MediaSmart Server EX470. I originally had Windows Home Server running on my Dell Dimension E520 but decommissioned it when I created my "Ultimate" PC. I really wanted to try out the experience the average consumer will have in purchasing a Windows Home Server and setting it up in their home. The HP MediaSmart Server seemed like the perfect choice in checking out the Windows Home Server experience.
The HP MediaSmart Server EX470 has the following specs:
Processor - AMD 1.8GHz 64-bit Sempron
Memory - 512MB DDR
Interfaces - 4 USB 2.0 Ports, 1 eSATA Port
Storage - 1 500GB SATA 7200 RPM
The EX470 model of the HP MediaSmart Server comes with a single 500GB harddrive, however the EX475 model comes with 1TB (two 500GB SATA harddrives). I don't need 1TB just yet so decided to go with the EX470. The EX470 comes with 3 expansion slots to add my own harddrives a

One of the big challenges we face all the time is how to control one of these growing networks at home. How shall I help my neighbors to actually manage their growing environment with different PCs (one per parent and one per kid and a mediacenter and, and, and)? I assume that you know that feeling.
I do not say (yet) that all the problems are solved but at least we did one significant step with a product we call Windows Home Server - a server version (as OEM version) targeted to the above described scenarios. Definitely something to look at and something that will help us in the future to help our friends and family to manage their environment in a secure, safe and easy way.

Otras compañías como Fujitsu-Siemens, Gateway, Iomega, LaCie o Medion, han anunciado equipos con el sistema operativo servidor “hogareño” de Microsoft.Este parece ser el primer paso pa
Medion's Windows Home Server-based MD 90110 gets detailedJust as HP reportedly delayed its own Windows Home Server-based device, Medion's iteration is getting all fleshed out, so let's get right down to the dirt, shall we? Apparently, the MD 90110 will feature an AMD Sempron 64 or Intel P4 LGA 775, an AMD RS-690 / Intel 945GC chipset, be based on a MicroATX motherboard, and include 1GB of RAM, between 500GB and 2TB of RAID storage space, an eSATA port, gigabit Ethernet, and four USB 2.0 connectors. Additionally, users can look forward to 'screwless internal hard drive bays,' a recovery button, HDD status LEDs, and a variety of configurations to fit your needs (and budget). Per usual, there's no hard data available just yet in regard to pricing or release dates, but we'll keep you posted.(Via Engadget.)
If there’s one computing server product every enthusiast and home-user should be excited about, that would not be Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition for Itanium-Based Systems, instead it should be Windows Home Server - codename “Q”. Last month, WHS was released to manufacturing aiming for distribution “in the next couple of months” and retail availability “this fall”. The official availability date is now most likely Monday, August 27th 2007.
On the Microsoft Support Lifecycle website, a listing for Windows Home Server states the general availability date as 8/27/2007, and mainstream support retirement date as 10/9/2012. This however does not suggest OEM products such as those from HP will ship then - still expected to come “fall” (September).
In this case, general availability most likely refers to the DVD package for system builders and other OEM channels. If you’re one of those people who want to build your own Home Se

Now that Microsoft has revealed Windows Home Server at C.E.S. 2007, more information has been made available on the web and I have an update to some of that information. First of all the release to manufacturing (RTM) date for the final version is expected on June 22, 2007. There are three primary purposes for the Windows Home Server and they are automated computer backup, access everything from anywhere, and it grows with you as it has expand capabilities by adding more hard drives.
Â
Access anywhere seems to be a great feature where you can launch your web browser and log into your home server to access files or if your computer is on, you can remotely connect to it. Home Server owners will be able to setup a free internet address to access the servers and the address will be something like username.homeserver.com. For official information from Microsoft, click the following the Windows Home Server link. You might find it both funny and informational. To see a video ofÂ
During Bill Gates Keynote address at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, he announced that Microsoft along with key partners will be launching what is called a Windows Home Server. The Windows Home Server will be used by vendors such as HP as a basis for new hardware that consumers can purchase for their homes to connect to their Windows Vista computers. He even mentioned a connection with the Xbox 360, Windows XP, and Windows Media Center PCs.
Users will be able to access data stored on the Windows Home Server and have data from each machine that is connected to the server to be automatically backed up daily. Additionally, Bill Gates mentioned that users will be able to remotely connect to the data when they are away from home.
The goal of this new product is to serve as a hub for multimedia files in the home. These servers will come in both Windows Vista and Windows XP versions and should be available sometime this year.
