      Fletch's Film Review: Strange Wilderness
Rescue Dawn. Superbad. Supertroopers. God forbid - even Fletch? What do these films have in common, you ask? Well, by virtue of having their stars or co-stars (Steve Zahn, Jonah Hill, Kevin Heffernan and Joe Don Baker, respectively) appearing in Strange Wildnerness, they all feel somewhat tainted to me now (lucky for Ernie Borgnine, The Single Guy was never good to begin with). I can confidently say that Strange Wilderness will be the worst movie I will see this year. I can only hope that you don't make the same mistake, or have already (Wayward Jam from Reel Whore already has, but his take is gentler than mine). The truth is, the films of those that appear in Wilderness (this being a Happy Madison production, Adam Sandler vets Allen Covert and Peter Dante join the ride, as does Justin

      The Therapy of the Wilderness
The last time I was running from something, I packed my camping gear in the middle of the night and left for Yosemite, arriving at around 7:30 AM. Now, I want to run from myself, and the mountains offer the only promise of relief, but I am bound here by obligations and a lack of money.I hope that someone will read this post and realize the healing beauty of the wilderness. Perhaps it cannot save me, but I hope it will save others. Our souls were meant to be immersed in nature. I find when I am alone in the wilderness, twenty miles from another human, my problems, whatever they maybe, begin to work themselves out. This is one of the main reasons I am a conservationist. Humanity needs Nature. I defy anyone to be out in the wilderness without feeling a little closer to God. How much hate,

I have experienced difficult times in the past that I can look back on now as preparation periods for my ‘now’ ministry. When I have endured long times of waiting, it has always been followed by a time of an intense encounter with the Lord where He lit a fire to have me recognize to some extent the reason I had to go through that trial. That fire was not only for illumination but also for rejuvenation and restoration depending on what my state of mind was at the time. Another Sunday Morning Stroll In The Wilderness
Well, I awoke this morning with that "Sunday" feeling.... that warm feeling of knowing that I don't have to go to work and there is a world out there. I looked at my alarm clock and it read 6.50am. It was still quite dark outside, but when I looked out the window I could see that it was misty again. Well, in fact it was more than mist today, it was think fog. It looked so inviting and the cool breeze coming through through the window smelt so fresh. So, I dived into the shower, got dressed, picked up my camera and walking boots and jumped in the car. 20 minutes later I was in the middle of Savernake forest, an amazing forest with an abundance of stunning walks. The atmosphere was eerie - nobody about, the mist slowly lifting, leaves falling, the breeze rustling the branches of the trees, birds breaking into their morning chorus, squirrels scurrying across the woodland floor, the occasional deer crunching through the undergrowth.I made may way down one of the tracks with camera in hand,

      Glamour camping in Canadian wilderness
The setting is the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort's Bedwell River Outpost. It's at the end of a long inlet in Clayoquot Sound, surrounded by snowy peaks, where mist wreathes the tall trees that blanket the slopes. The only way in is by boat from the fishing village of Tofino or float plane from Vancouver. We arrive in the evening and the first thing we notice are the huge white, safari- style tents on raised platforms over the river, which are lit by flaming torches. We're met at the jetty by Stetson-wearing owner/manager John Caton, puppy in one arm, grandson in the other. Now catch your breath and look around.

Wilderness Survival The Tom Brown Jr. Way
Wilderness survival is becoming a hot topic these days. There are a lot of shows of late on TV about some one showing the viewers what to do and not to do if they were to get lost in the wilderness. There is one on the Discovery Channel, I believe, and it’s called Man Vs. Wild starring an ex British special ops guy named Bear. The other show is called “Survivorman”, but I can’t recall the clown’s name who’s in it. While Survivorman (let’s just call him that) has a lot harder job getting things done while surviving in the wilderness (he has to position the cameras himself that can really hinder one’s ability to do what it takes to make it out there), he sometimes does really dumb stuff. In one episode he was out in Utah’s Canyon Lands National Park - a really dry place -, and set out to find himself some drinkable water. He started digging in a dry river bed, like you should if you know anything about wilderness survival, becaus

Hi. It’s Kimberly from Sanity and the Solo Mom taking over the guest posting chair today. I’ve been going around and around about what to write here ever since I begged asked Karen if I could whore myself guest post here. First off, I was giddy with all the profanity I could use here–four letter words! In combination even! When that buzz wore off, I realized I still had to actually, you know, write a post. But today is not a good day for writing (although it’s shaping up to be a fine day for profanity). So far, today has been everything I loathe about motherhood. The whining. The screaming. The utter defiance. The misplaced sense of injury and injustice. The lack of patience and feeling like I would rather stick flaming toothpicks in my eyes than stay in this house for one more second. That powderkeg feeling of tension growing and building to a fever pitch. And did I mention the screaming? I’m thinking longingly of school. Boarding school. For me, n

      Assembling a Wilderness Survival Kit
Here is an article of interest from survivaltopics.com on assembling a wilderness survival kit. How to Make a Survival Kit to Save Your Life For those of us who travel in the wilderness on a regular basis, the idea of equipping oneself with a survival kit seems trivial. Survivalists are sure to have a survival kit on hand at all times and are prepared to use it. This is because the experienced survivor knows the unexpected can happen without a moments notice. Help or rescue may not always be immediately available so you need to be able to take care of yourself come what may. Making your own survival kit from a judicious selection of gear is the first step towards getting out alive. Below is a discussion on how to make your own survival kit. Of necessity it is a bit wordy, as I believe it is important to know something about why certain items should be included in a survival kit, rather than just blindly following instructions for creating a kit without understanding why pieces of gear

      The Adirondacks — A Wilderness Lover’s Paradise
With summer in full swing and Cait out of school, we spend more time at my mother’s place up in the Adirondacks. Since I always appreciate seeing pictures of where you all live around the world (it helps to satisfy my wanderlust), I thought you might enjoy seeing more than just my pond. When the locals talk about the Adirondacks, they’re usually referring to the mountains which attract hikers and climbers from all over. There are 46 “High Peaks” dominated by Mt. Marcy at 5,344 feet, New York’s highest point. These are all contained within the 6 million acre Adirondack State Park. To give you an idea of scale, the Adirondack Park is the largest US park outside of Alaska. It’s the size of Yellowstone and Grand Canyon National Parks combined. Over 85% of the wilderness east of the Mississippi is located within its borders. With more than 3,000 lakes and ponds, 2,000 miles of hiking trails, and four seasons, it’s a recreationalist’s para

      Wine in the Wilderness
Dear readers and drinkers, This is just to say I’m lost in the wilderness somewhere. And by lost, I mean I’m still not exactly sure where we’re going. All I know is up in Bear Valley (in the Sierras, I gather), giving up some basic amenities. No car camping here. No showers, no bathrooms. Plenty of peace and quiet, though and hopefully not too many mosquitoes. Having been forced to leave early Friday morning, after working on my JFP column and making potato salad all Thursday evening after work, I didn’t have the chance to write a delightful post to greet you on Monday, so this is what you get. It is possible that I will have stopped Friday in Murphys to get some Twisted Oak goodness and the like. It is guaranteed I will have been drinking wine out in the woods and hopefully getting some writing done for this and my new project. However the trip turns out, at least I have some good music, good friends, and reading material to get me through. If you don&rs

The naked truth about wilderness hiking
“You might expect to meet the occasional man during a women-only walking tour. But I didn’t expect that the first one I’d see would be naked … except for a pair of hiking boots. via The Toronto Star Original post by AFP

MK Gears Up For Wilderness/Street Corner
I'm all about Mary-Kate's new hair color, but would it kill her to wash the damn stuff? Seriously. This weekend, the diminutive starlet stepped out of the Dualstar offices for a smoke break looking half sassy half lumberjack (in mullet terms that is: Logging on the top, street walking on the bottom). The girls seem to be spending more time at the office these days, so perhaps they're gearing up for a new project. Can I get a hell yes for New York Minute II?

      The Wilderness/Technology Conundrum
Before I knew anything about technology, startup companies or accounting I was an outdoor fanatic (I still am, just need to be reintroduced to the wild). Until I moved to DC, I was an avid mountaineer, did a semester at NOLS, hit the crags and mountain biked like a fiend. During senior year of college my passion was environmental policy, specifically involving wetlands. Unfortunately, I also found myself also enjoying technology (OMG, Urban!) and this was creating a conflict. For many, technology and nature are mutually exclusive. What do I mean? In our Outing Club, people would freak out when I brought my cell phone mountain biking, or my iPod hiking. I was criticized for wanting to move to Manhattan…why not Boulder or Bend? Anyway, one of my real interests is technology that can be used in the wilderness in a non-obtrusive, complementary manner. I’m currently reading the biography of Yvonne Chouinard the founder of Patagonia – the book is awesome, BUY IT! Yvonne was a guy who

A Little Place in the Wilderness
The album A Little Place in the Wilderness by Canadian indie pop band Memphis was a late arrival in my collection last year, but it still made a good enough impression to end up as no. 11 on my list of favorite albums of 2006. The album is the second output from this duo consisting of Chris Dumont and Torquil Campbell; the later probably more known as the front man/lead singer in the more well-known and much loved Stars. Rob Mitchum over at Pitchfork wasn't all that crazy about the album at the time of the release (August 15), but unlike him, I really enjoy spending the 40 minutes in company with this album, listening to the duo's blend of dreamy indie/twee/chamber-pop. Despite owning two of their albums, I've never really been a fan of Stars, which probably is why I have no problems listening to A Little Place in the Wilderness, without constantly comparing it to Torquil's "other band". I've received permission to upload these two tracks, which I believe are very representative o

Wildfire in the Wilderness by Chris Czajkowski
Alarm about the 2004 Lonesome Lake fire went unnoticed for a while, to the great frustration of locals. It prompted me to start a blog and bring attention to the fire with reports from locals. Some of my friends clients (I design web sites) were in the midst of this drama and their personal accounts were vivid, leading amongst other things, to me getting a call from the CBC asking for information. Once the fire grew in size it had no trouble getting attention. Amongst those in danger was Chris Czajkowski, pioneer log cabin builder, botanist and wilderness tour guide. She was sending me regular reports which I reproduced in my blog and then on her web site. This year she published her account of this dramatic experience: Wildfire in the Wilderness The book culminates in a white-knuckle account of the all-too-close Lonesome Lake fire of 2004, from its infancy as a lightning strike reported in nearby Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, to Czajkowski's realization

      Words from a Wilderness Mystic
I've always heard about David James Duncan's writings. First it was "The Brothers K", which I initially thought was someone's nickname for "The Brothers Karamazov" - I thought they were just trying to be cute, until I realized that it was one of Duncan's novels. Then a Whitworth writing professor told me I really should read Duncan's "The River Why" - and then it was assigned to be read for a course this semester. Duncan's love of nature and the search for truth, beauty and wisdom is intoxicating. To read one of his novels is to be swept up into the lives, despairs and hopes of his characters' experiences. I have a tremendous respect for Duncan's thoughts on spirituality and religion. As one who is pursuing an open & progressive spirituality and theology, I find much of his writing very refreshing. I am also married to someone who just finished a course on Ecology and we are beginning to learn about ways to live as good and faithful stewards of God's creation, reducing, reusi

Subaru Wants You to Dump Your Car in the Wilderness
In their latest commercials Subaru tells us that dumping a junk car in the wilderness or driving a car you can't see out of equate to some strange form of love. The first shows some environmentally-challenged dufus driving two days to take his old Forester to "Subaru heaven," which consists of a spot somewhere in an otherwise pristine wilderness area where other Subaru owners have aba
