Once shunned by academics, Wikipedia now a teaching tool
Wikipedia, the upstart Internet encyclopedia that most universities forbid students to use, has suddenly become a teaching tool for professors. Recently, university teachers have swapped student term papers for assignments to write entries for the free online encyclopedia. Wikipedia is an "open-source" web site, which means that entries can be started or edited by anyone in the world with an Internet connection.

For instance, have a look at the Wikipedia article for Temple of Concord and take note of the coordinates link at the upper right corner of the page. If you click it you are taken to a page where you can view a map of the location of the Temple to provide geographic context to the article you are reading. In an attempt to find out what the longest recorded song in popular music history was, I inadvertently read the entire Wikipedia biography of Canned Heat; one of my least-favorite and most-hated bands of all-time.I had heard that Canned Heat recorded a 40 minute version of one of their songs on the B-side to a double live album; surely a top contender in the realm of lengthily-recorded modern music. Approximately 30 to 45 minutes later, I had accidentally learned more about these backwoods oafs than I ever wanted to know. In fact, I'm terrified to know what vital knowledge was squeezed out of my brain to make room for this new and unwanted trivial information. You win this round, Canned Heat. But the battle shall rage on. Sound off in the comments section and enjoy your weekend.

Wikipedia Moves Offline: Print Version Coming Soon
The online community-generated encyclopedia will be testing out a print version in Germany. Bertelsmann AG announced plans to release a single-volume, printed and bound version of the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, in September. And it's already out of date.Kul Wadhwa of the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that promotes the site, tells the San Francisco Chronicle that the move is "groundbreaking"—it's his job to figure out how to make some money through Wikipedia, even though the site doesn't post ads and all the content is free. The head of publishing at Bertelsmann's encyclopedia group says the book will be condensed to roughly 50,000 of the most popular articles, each of which will be just eight to ten lines each. So, if you're wondering, the answer is no, that little stub you w

Wikipedia is the largest online encyclopedia. Since its inception in 2001 it has grown to include more than 10,000,000 articles and is read by almost 700 million visitors a year. And to most teenagers, this is the only encyclopedia they have ever known or ever care to know.Wikipedia is a wonderful resource. There are articles on topics that print encyclopedias never even considered including. The best part, though, is the interlinking within and between articles. Each article will provide links to other articles within Wikipedia and external articles also. The main complaint about Wikipedia is that anybody can edit it. According to Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia's founder, most of the articles are written by the same 500 or so people. But because they can be edited by anyone, their trustworthiness

Since its inception, the band's line-up has consisted of Eddie Vedder (lead vocals, guitar), Jeff Ament (bass guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), and Mike McCready (lead guitar). The band's current drummer is Matt Cameron, formerly of Soundgarden, who has been with the band since 1998. Formed after the demise of Ament and Gossard's previous band Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with its debut album Ten. One of the key bands of the grunge movement in the early 1990s, Pearl Jam was nevertheless criticized early on as being a corporate cash-in on the alternative rock explosion. RAD is characterized by markedly disturbed and developmentally inappropriate ways of relating socially in most contexts. It can take the form of a persistent failure to initiate or respond to most social interactions in a developmentally appropriate way—known as the "inhibited" form—or can present itself as indiscriminate sociability, such as excessive familiarity with relative strangers—known as the "disinhibited form". [Wikipedia] April 15: Ailanthus altissima
Subject: April 15: Ailanthus altissima Ailanthus altissima is a deciduous tree in the quassia family (Simaroubaceae). It is native to northeast and central China as well as Taiwan. Unlike other members of the genus Ailanthus, it is found in temperate climates rather than the tropics. The tree grows rapidly and is capable of reaching heights of 15 metres (50 ft) in 25 years. However, the species is also short-lived and rarely lives more than 50 years. A. altissima was first brought from China to Europe in the 1740s and to the United States in 1784.
