Ecuador star Antonio Valencia scored two second-half goals to seal Wigan’s Premier League place for next season with a surprise win at Aston Villa. Wigan 0-0 Reading
Reading played well today like they had spirit, but is it all to late? Lets hope not as the other Premier League results favoured us and thank fully we are still just out of the drop zone. Still playing Doyle on the wing today then subbed by Little I still don't know why he thinks Doyle should make so many starts the guy isn't firing and so why field him all the time? In my opinion Little should have started and played Long up with Lita from the start. Well a deserved point and we can only pray that Reading will manage to get some more points in the 2 games left and not have to rely on the other teams to keep us safe a win would really 1 win would almost do it , so well done to the boys and lets take something off Spurs they can afford it and we need it some come! on you Royals

New tactics = new perfomance. Wigan matches of October and November (FM 2008).
After the weak start I changed tactics of Wigan totally. 4-4-1-1 was replaced on 5-2-1-2 with two fullbacks covering the whole flanks. Then I began to tune new tactics scheme trying different individual settings and different players on positions (I will describe my new tactics in one of the next post). As a result I'm glad with the performance of my at the moment. In October and November we had row of the following matches in the Premier League: There is only one annoying match with Portsmouth where we could do nothing to resist with dignity. The performance in the other games was very keen. Though in half of matches we suffered a lack of class for gaining a needed result. Wigan matches of the first months. Weak start.
Starting as Wigan manager I suspected that it would be hard to make a good start in the first row of matches. And this is it what I've got: Only 3 victories and 1 draw in 10 matches. My current problem (linked with such poor statistics) is finding the tactics that will be suitable for the team. Almost all these matches I've been playing 4-4-1-1 formation with Whole Pitch pressing. And performance of the team was rather good - I liked playing style. But there was very poor realization of goal moments. And after all I decided to develop more successive tactics having more than one forward. At the current period I'm working on this question. Returning to the results of Wigan in August and September I would say that the most negative game was with Burnley which is certainly weaker but

Transfers of Wigan before the first season
After the previous post where I had reviewed the players of my Wigan I decided that the teams needs to be strengthened by footballers of more high quality. Therefore I spent a lot of money on different transfers (12) - more than any other Premier League club: My starting transfer money amount was rather high for such modest football club - $25M. We bought 11 players spending $23M and took 1 player on loan also: There are very different types of transferred players, I would say: Young prospective : Nacer Barazite, Kevin Monnet-Paquet, Rence van der Wal, Oussama Assaidi, Antony Di Lallo, Joe Mattock - all of at most 19 years old. Old good Bolivian cheap guys: Ivan Castillo, Luis Cristaldo, Oscar Sanchez - all are of at least 36 years old, but have rather good attribute values

      Arsenal vs Wigan
When Eduardo played in Olic for Croatia's second goal I couldnt help but feel a small sense of joy.  That pass summed up completely why England is where it is and Arsenal are getting the blame.  Before the match I explained my reasons why it is not Wenger's fault and that one pass just backed up my points.  The way he carried the ball forward and slipped a perfect pass through three defenders showed why English players cannot get into the Arsenal squad.  Only once did I see a pass of such quality and that was from David Beckham.  Apart from the cross to set up Crouch I did not once see a pass that opened the Croatia defence up and cause them real problems.  The England players did not run with real purpose as Eduardo did.  England are not good enough and the first step to improving the dire situation we are in is not caps on foreigners but acceptance.  Once this is done then maybe we can get somewhere. I had no idea that I had touched a raw nerve, when I castigated the Chelsea faithful for the lack of contribution to the cause during the humiliating defeat by Croatia at Wembley yesterday in my article entitiled I blame Chelsea for England defeat. There was much banter and the Gooners gave as good as we got. Let me make it quite clear, we are proud supporters of a big Club. Now Chelsea fans call themselves a big club, why? This is usually the cliche applied to a club that has a large fan base and lots of history and trophies.Ok lets deal in more historical facts. and see how big this club is… Chelsea founded 1905 , when the Woolwich Arsenal had already been up and running for 20 years. Chelsea live in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and love to give the impression that they have links with Royal patronage, well this was a pub team ok, the pub was The Rising Sun, now the Butchers Hook on the Fulham Road. We were originally the Royal Arsenal, you Chav dimwi

Unfamiliar Arsenal should make light work of Wigan
It’s back to Arsenal news after yesterday’s post on the English national team, but in all honesty things don’t read too well for the weekend Premiership clash with Wigan. There were a couple of rumours circulating that Alexander Hleb and Mathieu Flamini had been injured on international duty and they have unfortunately been confirmed by Arsene Wenger. The Arsenal manager is expecting to be without Hleb for three weeks with a hamstring strain whilst Flamini will be out for a week. The pair are joined by Abou Diaby, Cesc Fabregas and Gilberto Silva on the unavailable list for a variety of reasons. And whilst Philippe Senderos has been made available news that Robin van Persie would play some part against Wigan proved immature as Wenger confirmed he will be out for a little while longer yet. “Hleb came back with a hamstring injury. I think he’ll be out for 21 days. Flamini came back with a little thigh problem too. That will be one week maximum. Senderos is a

      Arsenal vs. Wigan: Match Preview
Match ReviewThis Saturday a depleted Arsenal side face off against second from bottom Wigan as the Gunners look to retain the top spot in the Premier League. After three straight draws (against Liverpool, Manchester United, and Slavia Prague), the Gunners were just beginning to regain their form with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Reading before the international break. However, the international games didn't do much good for the Gunners, as Mathieu Flamini, Abou Diaby, and Alex Hleb all picked up injuries. There are no injuries in the defense, with Bacary Sagna, Kolo Toure, William Gallas, and Gael Clichy all fit and ready to play. However, with Cesc Fabregas already suspended for the match, it seems that Arsenal are facing what seemed impossible - something of a midfield crisis.Tomas Rosicky looks sure to start, although he may be pushed out onto the left with Emmanuel Eboue patrolling the right. Otherwise, Rosicky could start on the right with Eduardo or Theo Walcott used as a left winge

Tevez Leads Rout Against Latics (Manchester United 4 - Wigan 0)
United's already packed treatment table had to endure more load after today's game. Already losing Carrick to a mid-week elbow fracture, tissue-boy (Saha) did himself no favours when he hurt himself during the warm-up to today's game.Once again in an absolutely crazy weekend where there was only one 3pm kickoff (and we're not on that list yet again), we had an early kickoff. And what it meant was that Kentona and I had to spend a mini-fortune bringing our better halves for another expensive prawning trip just to catch the game in peace. In a first half plagued by injuries to both Vidic and O'Shea, we had little to show for. Their replacements Anderson and Danny Simpson showed what little depth and experience we had left in reserve. With further injury scares to both Evra and Pique, Kentona and I were left wondering what else we had to offer from the bench. Thankfully we were playing one of the worst away teams in the form of Wigan. Had the competition been any stiffer, we could hav

Dr Wigan from the movie the Insider
The Insider 1999: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0140352/ I always watch movie before I do my work. It releases me tension and stress from my head. A designer head is just like that, we need inspiration always. A number of inspiring movies that I remembered such as The Astronaut Farmer 2006 and The World Fastest Indian. Unlike Mr Farmer from Astronaut Farmer, the hero of the movie character of Insider, is a living hero and has a website. Dr Wigan Website: http://www.jeffreywigand.com/index.php I watch this movie twice and just now in Star Movies..I watched it because there was no other good movies and I want to recall the movie back in my head.Starred by Al Pacino and Russell Crowe a year before Gladiator hits the box office. I recommend for those who haven’t see yet this movie, see it first and then go to Dr Wigan website. I will not do movie reviews from now on because its out of the way of this blog purposes.I just wanna show Dr Wigan website that I found. Around the Web, Inspira

      Aston Villa 1-1 Wigan
Wigan went ahead with a Emile Heskey goal, and Villa could possibly have expected to have come away with more when Wigan went down to 10 men when Antonio Valencia was sent off due to that tackle on Wilfred Bouma.Villa enjoyed the majority of the possession and laid on the pressure, but Wigan defended well and the goals didnt come. Early in the second half Gabby Agbonlahor scored again for Aston Villa, but no lead was gained by the home side. When any team is ahead and loses a player, they are bound to sit back and defend. Villa just dont seem to have that depth and quality of side right now to penetrate during this kind of situation.Maybe if we are lucky and Randy Lerner & Martin O'Neill can attract the right players during the summer then next season will be a different story. Villa did well to get back in the game, but should have put the chances away and come away with all 3 points.we had our oppportunities, but the goals and the points just didnt come. Are we safe yet? too soon to

THE Match Report: Charlton 1 - 0 Wigan
Taken from Premierleague.comEngland squad striker Darren Bent rifled home an 86th-minute penalty to clinch three priceless points for Charlton Athletic at The Valley. The crucial Barclays Premiership relegation clash seemed destined for a draw until Fitz Hall was penalised by referee Peter Walton for his challenge on Marcus Bent. And Darren Bent made no mistake from the spot as he easily beat goalkeeper John Filan to fire his 12th goal of the season.Charlton showed just one change to the side that beat Newcastle United 2-0 with Dennis Rommedahl replacing Marcus Bent, who was brought on at the interval following a below-par half from the misfiring Dane.Skipper Darren Bent overcame the knee injury that forced him to miss England’s Euro 2008 qualifiers while Alexandre Song recovered from his hamstring problem in time to make the starting line-up.Leighton Baines, Lee McCulloch and Hall all returned from suspension for Wigan while Caleb Folan overcame his ankle problem to partner Emile Hesk

      Wigan, Bolton, Mad Jens etc…
Afternoon all; a short post regarding Wigan & Bolton. So, another comeback is needed at the Emirates stadium to ensure we stay unbeaten at our new home and to keep the pressure on Liverpool who are now just 1 point ahead of us. We also have a game in hand. A couple of quick points regarding yesterday’s game: 1) Henry was out of order - I know that Wigan were time-wasting but there was no need for Henry to do what he did after the first goal. He’s the Captain and should lead by example. 2) Mad Jens was also in the wrong but wasn’t it funny?! And how many keepers have managed to get 5 cards in season before?! I can’t think of any off the top of my head. It rather conveniently keeps him out of the Carling cup final…. 3) Flamini is a very lucky boy. You only have to look at the Senderos incident last weekend to see how another ref could have reacted to the little ‘tug’. But saying that why didn’t Heskey stay on his feet and try and pu

      PREVIEW: Arsenal v Wigan Athletic
BBC is largely devoid of any defensive cover which is surprising as unless I have missed something, Connolly is fit and could fulfill that role for the first team. However, Arsene seems to know what he is doing and assuming that the notoriously unreliable Beeb are right, the team I foresee starting is: Lehmann; Hoyte, Toure, Djourou, Clichy; Walcott, Fabrega, Gilberto, Rosicky; Adebayor, Henry with a bench of: Almunia, Flamini, Aliadiere, Baptista, Traore I suspect that Gilberto is deemed to be the cover for either Toure or Djourou whilst an injury to Hoyte may well see Flamini increase his repetoire of positions filled at Arsenal to right-back as well, although I have a feeling that he has carried out those duties already. At my advancing years though, the memory is one of the first faculties to go although typing is not far behind because I am all fingers and thumbs in doing this. And you will have to forgive any spelling errors because I cannot get things right. Anyway, I digress.

      Arsenal v Wigan - Preview
This Sunday sees the first visit of comedy pie-eaters Wigan to the Emirates. Most Arsenal fans will have fond memories of their last trip to London where they had the great honour of being the last team to play at Highbury. They also did us a favour by rolling over to a 4-2 defeat gifting us three points and Champions League football, leaving our impoverished neighbours live on channel 5 every Thursday night. The Latics have been on a dreadful run of late but are coming to London off the back of a morale-boosting 1-0 victory over Porstmouth. They are also buoyed by the return of lumbering target man Emile Heskey, England U21 international left back Leighton Baines and Calamity Chris Kirkland to the squad. However we have a rare piece of good injury news ourselves with Abou Diaby and Julio Baptista available for the game. Alexander Hleb, Willy Gallas, Freddie and Emmanuel Eboue remain on the treatment table. Also unavailable is Swiss Tony&nb

Chelsea, Wigan, and why I'm Dangerous Drunk.
flangracneig pgoramian First of all, thanks for all the kind comments regarding the hidden post. We sat down and sorted out any tension there was between said person and myself. Out of respect for this person, the password won’t be given out to anybody else. Onto happier matters, yesterday I made the short trip to Llanelian Road, to watch Colwyn Bay vs. Buxton. Buxton were top of the league, and The Mighty Seagulls haven’t won in 8. Was there going to be a demoloshing? Not exactly. In conditions that Ray Mears would find challenging, Colwyn Bay scored a goal in either half. What was impressive was our second half performance, playing against the wind, against a team that have only lost 3 times all season. I’ll probably get pneumonia in the next few days, but by god I went home happy - if quite tipsy. One person who won’t be happy will be Mark Lawrenson, who’s 2-0 prediction of the Chelsea Wigan game was unsuprisingly wrong. Chelsea won the game, but they

Ronaldo Catalyst in Boxing Day Win (Manchester United 3 - Wigan 1)
Chelsea had dropped points in an earlier draw with Reading, leaving United 4 points clear. Ferguson had dropped a number of stars, giving the reserves a run against an unfancied Wigan side. Rio, Neville, Ronaldo, Giggs and Saha were replaced with Silvestre, Brown, Fletcher, Park and Ole. Although we had the better of the exchanges in the first half, Rooney squandered a number of good opportunities to give us the lead. Second half, cue Ronaldo. He replaced Fletcher at half time and within 6 minutes of the restart had scored 2 goals. The first from a corner which resulted in a headed goal, and the second from the spot. He's first shot was initially saved by the keeper but he scored from the rebound. Ole scored the third goal from a counter in the 60th minute, after Rooney's header had put him thru to face the keeper. Like on Saturday, Wigan were valiant but ineffective. However in the spirit of Christmas, the ever generous Silvestre gifted a penalty to Wigan in injury time, when he fou

Game of Two Halves (Wigan 1 - Manchester United 3)
After a terrible first half, a Rooney-inspired United scored thrice to pull clear at the top of the table in an early kickoff. Wigan scored early in the first half and had United on the backpaddle. We obviously didn't help ourselves by playing some really uninspired football. There was no flair, no width and no idea in our play. Quite frankly when the half time whistle came, I was pretty much ready to call it a day and go to bed. Luckily my girlfriend was using it, if not I would have missed the second half. The only bright spark in that terrible first half was a determined effort by Rooney which struck the crossbar. The second half started with Giggs replacing Wes Brown and inspiring some really sweet attacking play from United. It was literally a reverse from the way we played in the first half. Our attacking movement was crisp and quick, and we tore the Wigan defence apart, but failed to find the net. However in the 60 odd minutes, we found the opening when Vidic scored from a corn

The Wigan manager v Birmingham board spat continues
They say that breaking up is never easy and so it continues to prove for Steve Bruce and David Sullivan. Never mind that the former left St Andrews months ago for pastures new, or that Birmingham have acquired a manager in Alex McLeish who is ensuring they remain safe from the drop (probably). Wigan ready to piss on Manchester United bonfire
Thirteen years ago, Blackburn Rovers won the Premier League title, despite losing 2-1 to Liverpool on the last day of the season. This was because rivals Manchester United just simply couldn’t get over the finishing line at West Ham, drawing 1-1 and spurning several chances to land the spoils. Could history be about to repeat [...]
