The Houston Law Review will soon publish a new study that offers the first conclusive evidence that convicted defendants' race affects their sentencing. From the NY Times:
[The study] has found two sorts of racial disparities in the administration of the death penalty there, one commonplace and one surprising.
The unexceptional finding is that defendants who kill whites are more likely to be sentenced to death than those who kill blacks. More than 20 studies around the nation have come to similar conclusions.
But the new study also detected a more straightforward disparity. It found that the race of the defendant by itself plays a major role in explaining who is sentenced to death.

Today, I did a little preparation for the second phase of my beaded Beatles Yellow Submarine. I looked in my bead stash, and realized that I only had one small bag of size 11 chartreuse seed beads. That's not nearly enough to bead four smiling whales. So, this afternoon, I did a little bead shopping. In addition to Opaque Chartreuse, I also picked up some Matte Silver-Lined Chartreuse, Opaque Green, and Matte Transparent Yellow.When I returned home, I began to create some felt whale shapes. I did this first by re-sizing my sketches and printing them out (see photo below). Each one varies in size from 4.5" to 6.5" wide. On the Napa Valley leg of our trip to California, Sandy and I made a stop at Whitehall Lane Winery, located just to the south of St. Helena.We were given a tour of the wine making operation by Doug Fitzgibbon, tagging along with a VIP group. After seeing some grapes being crushed and workers topping off barrels, we made our way into the tasting room. There we had several very nice wines. Whitehall was founded in 1978 and produces 45,000 to 50,000 cases of wine annually. They have big plans on the horizon, with a new hospitality salon and a chef's kitchen that will allow 30-35 people to enjoy intimate dining. Part of the project will expand Whitehall's high-end wine portfolio. Whitehall has 160 acres of vines on the Napa Valley floor and also buys from a select list of growers. Some of the wines being made at Whitehall use the Vino-Seal glass cork, which is the latest attempt at solving the industry problem of an average 6-8 percent failure rate of bottles using natural cork closures.

In the workplace, some Whites feel it is their moral obligation to tell Black coworkers how they should feel about to certain incidents, comments or actions.This isn’t about opinion. No, this is about White workers literally telling a Black person they should or shouldn’t feel a certain way about racially insensitive comments, actions, etc. For instance, let’s say a White worker makes a racist and insensitive comment. Black workers complain and are told by Whites that they, “…shouldn’t feel that way (or take it that way).” Or, they may be told outright, to “not be so sensitive.” This completely disregards the feelings of the Black workers and actually marginalizes the workers with the assumption that they aren’t even smart enough to interpret routine day-to-day communication, standard English (normally their first language), and racist insults or actions.I’ve experienced this myself—more than once. The first night, we sipped on the Simonsig 2005 Chenin Blanc, a South African wine of 100 percent chenin and a slightly unweildly alcohol level of 14.3 percent. Chalk the high alcohol up to a warm, dry 2005 that resulted in fewer, more concentrated grapes and even a little botrytis, that sought-after mold.
