World Record Whisky not as Old as Claimed?
"A new world record was set on 28th September with a bottle of Bowmore selling at auction for a remarkable £29,400. The bottle of single malt is the oldest Bowmore known to be in existence and is believed to have been bottled on Islay around 1850 by W & J Mutter." This story appeared in the Ileach a month ago and was published on this blog. In the meanwhile a story appeared on Andrew Jefford's Blog where serious doubts were raised regarding the real age of the bottle. The following story, published in the Ileach, sheds some light on this "Ghost Bottle Affair" although a final conclusion cannot be made: Iain Russell, the archivist at the Scottish Brewing Archive based at Glasgow University is one of those who have pointed out anomalies that would date the bottle in the 1890's rather than the 1851 date claimed at the auction. This would of course dramatically alter the value of the bottle and it is most unlikely that it would have commanded a £29,400 world record price had the descrip

      Scotch Whisky to America

Finding the new raw materials different that what they were accustomed to, they lead the way for an evolution of new scotch now known merely as whiskey. Today if you can find a similarity between Irish and Scottish whiskey, and its now American cousin you would be further ahead than the experts and connoisseurs. The stronger, fuller and sweeter taste found in the American whiskey if a result of the lack of smoke in the drying process of grains and/or corns. The six different categories that American whiskey is divided into is a direct result of the different aging times and adjusted amounts of grains used in each batch of whiskey. The six different American brews are as follows:* Bourbon* Tennessee* Rye* Wheat* Corn* Blended whiskeyBourbonBourbon Is believed to be produced solely in Kentucky, which is a myth it has been produced i

Bruichladdich Light of Lochindaal Malt Whisky
Bruichladdich Distillery announced the arrival of a new Islay single malt, Lochindaal, to be distilled in October/November. The new Lochindaal malt whisky (50ppm+) will be more heavily peated than the Port Charlotte, but less so than Octomore, the world’s most heavily peated whisky. The new malt will be named after one of Islay's lost distilleries which once operated only a few miles further south in Port Charlotte. This same distillery also operated under the name Port Charlotte Distillery and Rhinns Distillery. The name of the latter will probably be used for a future single malt by master distiller Jim McEwan. Jim McEwan about his new creation: "As a distiller, of course I enjoy exploring what can be achieved with different barley types and peating levels. It’s what makes me tick. But from day one I also wanted to distil peated barley. Partly in homage to days gone by, but also to provide flavour variety as ingredients for future bottlings. There are few distillers that have the

      The Art Of Drinking Whisky
By: Elmo Kandel There is no true rule of thumb when drinking whisky but there are a few things to keep in mind to make the experience a lot more enjoyable. It should be pointed out that if the general rule of thumb is not observed there is still no reason not to enjoy this wonderful spirit. You should never put ice in a great dram as it kills the taste and aroma, however, some do prefer it this way. The glass that is originally designed to accept a fine malt whisky is very wide at the top and gently slopes in for the very reason of not comfortably accepting a bed of ice, as the intention is to steer away from this practice. This glass is by most called a tumbler. When purchasing great malt the price, like many things, will indeed reflect the quality you get since with scotch, you tend to get what you pay for. There are a variety of alcohols available for a cheap price in which you can get a buzz, however, fine scotch should be sipped and enjoyed.Good malt is not an appropriate mate for

The Scottish scientists hope to find an economical way to create bioethanol, which burns cleaner than petroleum based fuel.Professor Graeme Walker will lead the year-long study, which has to overcome challenges in converting spent grain into fuel. The process is more difficult than producing bioethanol from virgin materials. Currently spent grain from stills is either used for animal feed or discarded.

The worlds most expensive Whisky? is it worth the money?
The chatter stops and a reverential hush falls over the crowded bar, interrupted only by the finest sound known to man: the gentle plop of a cork being withdrawn from a bottle. And this is no ordinary bottle. Johnnie Walker 1805 (birth year of the Ayrshire grocer who founded the brand) is a unique blend of nine rare whiskies, the youngest of which is 45 years old. Only 200 bottles have been produced, it is for sale over the bar of only one establishment in London and a shot of it will cost you £1,000: Famous Grouse, eat your heart out. The man who withdrew that cork, and who will dispense your grand dram, is Salvatore Calabrese, the dapper little Italian who is the doyen of London barmen and a practitioner of his trade with a worldwide reputation for flair and excellence. He has already fallen in love with the 1805, and not just because of the potential benefits to his cash flow. “This,” he says, “is liquid history” — a mellifluous phrase at the best of times, and all the mo

      The Whisky Rebellion
For Vijay Mallya, taking over foreign companies is routine stuff. By building and buying everything from airlines to agrochemicals, he has created a $2 billion conglomerate. But he could be forgiven for taking a little added satisfaction in the recent $1.18 billion acquisition of scotch-whisky producer Whyte & Mackay by his UB Group, based in Bangalore, India. United Breweries has come full circle since the days of empire, when the firm was founded by Scotsman Thomas Leishman in 1915. It wasn’t until India gained independence from Britain in 1947 that the first Indian director was appointed–Vittal Mallya, Vijay’s father. Vijay Mallya has spread UB’s global reach, and taking over production of some of Scotland’s most treasured whiskies could be his most audacious move yet. UB’s liquor arm United Spirits, the biggest whisky maker in India, and the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) have been doing a brisk trade in bitter remarks, each ch

Youtube water and whisky experiment highlights failings of science teaching in the West
How to transfer the content of the glass of water into the glass of whisky and vice-versa, without an additional glass? What's even more entertaining is to read comments to that simple physics experiment: "it's magic!", "it's a fake!". This is a nice segway to this article that compares science curriculum for 14 years old students in the UK and China.

Shackleton's Whisky Stash Discovered in Antarctica
Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) was an Irish-born British explorer who tried to conquer Antarctica on several expeditions. During one failed attempt to reach the South Pole in 1908, Shakleton and his team built a hut on Ross Island and waited for nine months as temperatures dipped to -58 degrees.Part of what helped the crew pass the time was a stash of 12 cases of MacKinlay's Scotch, an Edinburgh distiller that had agreed a year earlier to serve as the expedition's official whisky supplier. After coming within 98 miles of reach their goal, the Shakleton expedition had to rush to leave Antarctica before the winter trapped them. The group left behind excess supplies in their haste to leave. Now a conservation team excavating ice from beneath Shackleton's hut has found two cases of the Scotch fully intact. The New Zealand-lead team decided to leave the whisky in the hut. One could only imagine what two cases of 100 year old Scotch might fetch at auction, especially with the historical s

      Whisky Fuels Scottish Economy
The 2006 Global Connection Survey prepared for the Scottish Executive shows just how big a hangover the economy of the country would have if Scotch whisky were not so popular around the world. According to the report, food and beverages are the most important trade goods for Scotland, accounting for $7.06 billion or 19.4 percent of the total exports in 2005. Oil and gas are excluded from the survey. Of the $7.06 billion in food and beverage totals, spirits account for $5.9 billion -- the vast majority being blended and Single Malt Scotch. Overall exports climbed by $1.77 billion last year and the United States remains the leading buyer of Scottish goods. The next largest export sector for Scotland is chemicals, which had $3.5 billion in export sales during the year.

The Whisky Bible: Blended Scotch is the Holy Grail
Single Malt Scotch gets most of the drinks media's attention when it comes to whisky from the United Kingdom. They tend to be heavily promoted by distilleries and they come with higher price tags than most blends. Single Malts are perceived as the art and craft of the distilling world. Now a world renowned Scotch expert has stirred up the Scotch universe by naming a blend as his Whisky of the Year for the first time ever. Jim Murray, the author of the Complete Book of Whiskey and Jim Murray's Whisky Bible, has named Old Parr Superior 18 Year Old as Whisky of the Year. He awarded the blend bottled by MacDonald Greenlees Distillers and marketed by Diageo a 97 out of 100 points in the new edition of the Whisky Bible, matching the highest point total ever awarded by Murray. Much of the Old Parr Superior production is sold in Asia and through duty free stores, meaning that it may be hard for average Scotch fans to locate. Murray named White Horse 12 Years Old as the Blended Scotch Whi

World's Oldest Whisky Sells for $28,895 at London Auction
A bottle of Scotch that experts claim could be the oldest in the world has sold in London this evening for $28,895 to an anonymous bidder. The Glenavon Special Liqueur Whisky was put up for sale at Bonhams Auction House by an Irish woman who said it had been in her family for generations. Glenavon, which was located in Banffshire, operated during the 1850s before it was absorbed into The Glenlivet Distillery. Estimates are that the Glenavon was bottled between 1851 and 1858. Some questioned whether the bottle was produced at the original distillery or later, after the consolidation, at the site of the present Glenlivet facility. In either case, whisky experts believe it was produced no later than the 1870s, making it an extremely rare Scotch. The 14-ounce green bottle was said to appear to have been full and unopened. The whisky created interest among collectors around the globe and the auction house was ready to accept bids from the United States and Asia.
