      Rare Gray Whale
Last night, I began to work on my fourth beaded whale. If you're a new reader, these four whales will accompany my beaded Beatles Yellow Submarine in an underwater adventure. Measuring 6" wide, this particular whale is the largest of the family, and he will be 100% gray when I am finished. So far, I've used size 11 pastel gray and matte charcoal seed beads for the fins, and I plan to use size 15's in a variety of grays for his body.So what makes this whale so rare? He has a dorsal fin, which is the fin at the top of his body. Most other Gray Whales in the sea do not have this fin. Perhaps we have just discovered a new species! Have a look and decide for yourself... ;)

Whale fins inspire more efficient fans.
Toronto-based WhalePower Corp. is using the fins of humpback whales to help design a better fan (and, hopefully, wind turbine). US scientists discovered some time ago that the little bumps on the Humpback whale's fins result in less drag and better lift when compared to a smooth fin. A fan blade with similar bumps makes the fan quieter, more efficient, and better at pushing down air, according to Envira-North, the company that has licensed the WhalePower design. Fans using WhalePower's design could use 20 percent less energy, and now that fans are incorporating the design, WhalePower will continue to work to apply the idea to wind turbines.

Whale Meat Prices Fall, Whaling Costs Rise
Japan’s whaling industry is in trouble again -- this time it’s financial.Whale meat prices fell in Japan while the cost of whaling operations in the Antarctic rose. The Institute of Cetacean Research, the body behind Japan’s whaling operations, is struggling to repay interest-free loans from the Japanese Government, according to a newspaper report.Apparently, Japan has been catching so many whales that this has increased supplies of whale meat to the market by thirty per cent. This caused a twenty per cent fall in price. At the same time the cost of whaling increased by ten per cent as the whaling fleet was expanded from five ships to six.And last year there was a fire onboard one of the ships. Whales in Odontoceti have teeth like sperm whales; whales in Mysticeti have baleens instead of teeth like humpback whales. Baleens are plates of hair that line the upper jaws of whales and keep fish in their mouths like big sweeps. Science: Whale "missing link' discovered
The whale is descended from a deer-like animal that lived 48 million years ago, according to fossil evidence. Remains found in the Kashmir region of India suggest the fox-sized mammal is the long-sought land-based ancestor of whales, dolphins and porpoises. Research in Nature suggests the animal lived mainly on land but dived into water to escape predators. Whales are known to be descended from land-dwellers but the “missing link” has been a mystery until now. Although Indonyus, as it is known, looks nothing like the whales of today, it shares certain anatomical features. Read the full article >>>

We don’t have a hunter in our village anymore, but one from a nearby village comes over, and, wearing his official hat and armband dispatches the beast with one shot.Afterwards the tail is cut off and taken to the local town hall where a bounty is paid. No Humane Way to Kill a Whale: Tim Winton
Australian writer Tim Winton at Albany, Western Australia, the site of Australia's last whaling station. Photo by IFAW (International Fund For Animal Welfare)Novelist and ocean activist Tim Winton credits his school days in Albany during the last days of whaling as deeply influential to both his work as a writer and environmentalist. His second novel, Shallows (1984) winner of the Miles Franklin Award, deals with the confrontation between whalers and conservationists on the high seas. Tim Winton penned the following when he heard of an historic meeting between two of the main protagonists in the last days of Australian whaling. In 1977 Jonny Lewis and Kase Van Der Gaag duelled on the southern ocean, Jonny a protester in a tiny inflatable, Kase the skipper of a whale chaser. The sticker above was collected by Aline Charney Barber while taking direct action against the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company in 1977.Extract from the as yet unpublished book, The Last Whale:"Aline Charney noted the town used the whale to define itself. A whale of a town. A whale of a radio station. The whale was a symbol and yet they were killing the whales. They loved the image but were killing the real thing. The contradiction got to her."The locals liked the connection to whales. Whaling had been important to Albany since it was founded in 1826. Whaling ships would call in to Albany for provisions and the first local whaling was done from Middleton Beach in 1833 near where the anti-whaling protesters set up their headquarters."Love’s Bus Service, the local tour operator, ran four trips to the station each week during the whaling season. THE EXPLODING WHALE
Whale watching is a favorite pastime enjoyed by tourists visiting coastal areas and marine reserves. It's very exciting to watch the leviathans wallow in the deep waters, flap their enormous tails, and bellow sweet nothings to their marine partners. Whale watching, however, isn't half as fun when the subject in question is washed up on the beach slowly decomposing and stinking to high heaven.

      On a Whale Trial
After the last weekend at the apple orchard, this week Ramesh & I decided to go for one of the whale watch tours. Mostly because one of the close relatives of Ramesh has suggested it to him. Anyway rather than doing our assignments[:(], we preferred the option. Friday, being the only common day on which Ramesh & I don't have classes, we thought we book the tickets on that day and also we could avoid the week end rush. But a full boat(more or less) caught me by surprise. And the reason was pretty simple - the trip is pretty awesome. After spending some few minutes in the New England Aquarium(not worth a visit), we took our seats in Voyager III, the cruise boat that was taking us to the sea. Thanks for the helpful tip in the website that recommended us to bring a winterwear, I brought my jacket for the tour. It turned out to be a wise decision against my view that i am carrying an extra weight in this hot day. It became pretty cold, once we moved to the interiors of the ocean.

L-R Jonny Lewis, Pat Rose Farrington, Jean-Paul Fortom-Gouin)By Chris PashSpent an exhausting week with the orginal anti-whaling activisits from Greenpeace's first Australian campaign 30 years ago. They haven't slowed down in the last three decades. They arrived in Sydney from round the world: Bobbi Hunter; Jean-Paul Fortom-Gouin; Tom Barber; Aline Charney Barber; Pat Farrington; Jonny Lewis. And they are all just as commited to the whales as they were in 1977 when they took direct action against Australia's last whaling station in Albany, Western Australia. They were honoured at a Greenpeace function of around 400 people in Sydney on Friday, Sept 14.Here's some of the press coverage:http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/phantom-figure-behind-a-cause-unveiled/2007/09/14/1189276983734.htmlhttp://blogs.smh.com.au/sit/archives/2007/09/innovations_tactics_down_to_a.html© 2007 Text Copyright Chris Pash. The trouble with satire is that sometimes it can be just too close to the truth. Australian readers will be well familiar with Clarke and Dawe. For the rest of us, here's what may be a first look... Earth-centred news for the health of air, water, habitat and the fight against global warming

The Last Whale harpooned by Australians
By Chris PashPhoto by ED SMIDT Over the 26 years that the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company operated, about 16,100 whales were harpooned: 14,600 sperms whales; 1,500 humpback whales (according to Whale World).http://www.whaleworld.org/FAQs/About_Cheynes_Beach_Whaling_Company/The last whale was caught on November 20, 1978. That day nine whales were harpooned. To fill the annual quota of 713 whales, the three whales chaser ships had to take six female sperm whales. But on the last day of operation (November 21, 1978) no whales were harpooned. An extract from The Last Whale describing the last day of whaling in Australia:November 21, 1978 --The whale chasers dressed up for their last day. Each of the three vessels had flags and bunting flying. The crews had resigned themselves. The industry was gone and their jobs as well. Those who’d never fired the harpoon cannon got their chance. Skipper Paddy Hart thought he’d give everyone a go. That way they would recall, years later, that they

      The Whale Hunters Of Lamalera
Lamalera, Lama meaning feeling or blade and Lera meaning sun, is situated on the southern side of the mountainous island of Lembata, which is part of the Solor Archipelago. It can only be reached by taking a bus, which is a converted truck, from Lewoleba. The drive takes about three and a half hours, mainly due to the bad roads, but is nevertheless quite scenic and adventurous. The roads can be extremely steep and narrow and there are usually many people sitting on the roof of the bus because of the restricted space inside. Sam, an american backpacker I traveled with at the time, and I arrived in the little whaling village around four in the afternoon on a Saturday in late August 07. We soon found out, that the fishermen do not go out to sea past 4 pm and neither do they work on a Sunday, when the whole community is going to church and rests. So instead of joining the whaling boats the next day as we had hoped, we walked for about half an hour to a nearby beach and a big bat cave and s

      More Whale Than Squid
During August heat waves, I sometimes took my 3 ½ year-old son and 1 ½ year-old daughter to the American Museum of Natural History. The marvelous dinosaur exhibit, on the fourth floor, includes mostly real fossils. No one wants them to crumble in the heat and humidity, so the museum is nicely air-conditioned.  I kept my daughter in a stroller, which she hated. Like my son before her, she soon learned to loosen the harness and scramble out, Houdini-like, while I read to them out loud about the Mesozoic era. They needed to run around, after holing up in the basement for days, and then following my desperate pleas and/or threats to stay still and quiet in the library. We packed lunch from home, which wasn’t permitted in the museum cafeteria. But if I shrugged and my children smiled from our back corner table, the guard usually winked okay. Both toddlers napped for two hours or more every afternoon. That’s when I wrote. In those days I believed my novels would find a publis

Whale Hunt at the White House
"You've got a bunch of people up on Capitol Hill auditioning for Captain Ahab, and I'm Moby Dick."Karl Rove is a big fish all right. But he is not a victim, and certainly not the idea I have of a noble specie worth preserving from Capitol Hill sharks. The Architect announced his resignation in The Wall Street Journal, as if it were business as usual, not the last throes of a controversial mastermind under subpoena... Instead of a beautiful whale, an ugly rat (not as cute as Ratatouille ; what's in a nickname, Turd Blossom ?) abandoning the ship to save the actual Captain.

      Whale-watching in Santa Catarina
The whale-watching season is on its way on the southern coast of Brazil. The Right Whale Environmental Protection Area goes from Pinheira, south of Florianópolis, to Rincão, and it’s there where most whales gather together. When summer arrives in the southern hemisphere, right whales abandon their traditional feeding grounds, in colder latitudes, and seek the shelter of coastal lands where their reproductive cycle takes place. From July to November a sizeable number of right whales gather in the coast of Santa Catarina. The best period to go whale-watching in the region is from the middle of August till the middle of October. The whales have already arrived this year, with dozens of sightings along the coast. The NGO Projeto Baleia Franca mantains an excellent site on the internet, with plenty of information on the right whale and the Brazilian coast. As well as that, the organization keeps and up-to-date chart with all the daily sightings of whales, showing how many individua

Once one quacks, they all do, and they make a terrible racket". Bob enters heaven and immediately steps on a duck. So an angel comes up to him and chains a large hairy ugly woman to him for eternity, and says " I told you not to step on a duck". The next week Larry steps on a duck. An angel comes to him and chains a very ugly woman to him for eternity and says "I told you not to step on a duck". Whale Shark At the Georgia Aquarium
ATLANTA- Two large trucks with police escorts flashing their lights rumbled up to the world’s largest aquarium early Friday with its newest residents—two whale sharks that had made an 8,000-mile journey from Taiwan. Veterinarians measured the new sharks and took blood samples before they were transferred by canvas harness from the trucks into their new home. The aquarium’s other whale sharks, Norton, Alice and Trixie, circled nearby, seemingly curious about the newcomers…… source:mercurynews.com
