The SNP is now seen, I think, as an OK party to support at Holyrood for a wide section of Scottish society and is seen as a convenient battering ram down in Westminster. No wonder the SNP MPs looked smirky smiley when Harriet Harman was huffily denouncing them on Wednesday at PMQs.According to a YouGov poll for the Telegraph, it is the intention of 33% of Scots voters to support the SNP at a Westm
It's astounding, time is fleeting. Madness takes its toll. But listen closely, not for very much longer, because Harriet's in control! This week we went back to the early 1990s: a woman a the Government dispatch box at Prime Minister's Questions, the Conservatives going back to basics on personal responsibility, widespread chuntering about an impending recession, and the ruling party losing by-ele
The Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, which is almost always referred to by its original name of Westminster Abbey, is a large, mainly Gothic church, (it served as a cathedral from 1546 - 1556), in Westminster, London, just to the west of the Palace of Westminster. It is the traditional place of coronation [...]

As MPs returned to Westminster following the Whitsun recess, there was only one topic of conversation being eagerly discussed tea room and bar, by elected representatives and bag-carriers alike. Was it perhaps Tony Blair's return to the GMTV sofa? Or maybe Jacqui Smith playing a blinder in the PLP meeting when she spoke on 42 days? Hang on, I've got it: it was the new guidelines on carrying knives
Yesterday I was walking from the main building (The Street) to the university halls of residence and saw this half of a car attached to one of the temporary building. that replaced the buildings destroyed by the 2007 fire. You get plenty of cut and shunts around Oxford's Blackbird Leys estate, but never a car combined with a building. Reminds me of the Animals episode of Brass Eye.

My colleague Stuart James Ross has won the 2008 World Press Freedom Day Student Journalism Award with his radio documentary piece on "Is new media killing journalism?"I was one of the people interviewed for this piece, and you can hear the entry here.Stuart has also created a longer documentary on the subject as part of his course.
[Continued from last week] The story so far ... gorgeous, pouting Gordon Brown has made concessions on the 10p tax rate, but the fear remains amongst his *ahem* loyal band of supporters in the PLP that it is not going to be enough to save grizzled streetfighter Tamsin Dunwoody in the Crewe and Nantwitch by-election. At Castle Dracula (or CCHQ as it's sometimes known) rumours are being pumped into

There's been a distinct whiff of the final stages of the Book of Revelations around Westminster this week, with the Gord forced to make expensive concessions to ensure the success of the Finance Bill, widespread criticism over the comrades' campaigning tactics in Crewe and Nantwitch, and an outbreak of bitchslapping between a Cabinet Minister and a newly ennobled Awkward Squad member. In other new
This week it's been aaaaaaaall about the U-turn, sorry, review of the 10p tax rate issue which culminated in a particularly excrutiating Prime Minister's Questions and Frank Field pulling his amendment to the Finance Bill at almost the last minute. In other news, Lembit Opik got Cheeky in Rome, Kate Hoey nearly didn't defect to the Tories, and Bob Spink MP followed in the noble footsteps of Robert Kilroy-Silk.

The state visit of French President Nicholas Sarkozy and his eminently suitable (ahem) wife added a certain je ne sais quios to the usual humdrum of Westminster but, as is often the way with these things, below the glittering surface the grubby underbelly of politics continued to undulate. The Speaker's increasingly desperate attempts to keep the furniture-related spending habits of MPs a secret has elicited criticism from those brave crusaders after truth in the fourth estate, whilst the row over the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill has led to a somewhat embarrassing climbdown on the part of the Government. In other news, the Conservatives blame Labour for falling marriage rates, and Alistair Darling's ability to enjoy a pint of mild and bitter in the boozer after work has been cut
If you're a prospective Westminster University student and, like me, you weren't shown round the halls of residence, you can see a typical kitchen in this video, depicting the Olympic sport of Beer Pong. Our kitchen is similar, but we have blue doors. Red paint would be too exciting for N Block.
With the Parliamentary spectacle of the Budget behind us, this week politics descended into navel gazing and - occasionally - farce. An outbreak of jealous bitchslapping at Downing Street in the wake of the departure of former Brown aide Spencer Livermore coincided with a sharp dip in the polls for the comrades. Smooth. Meanwhile, details of the Liberal Democrats preparedness for Government leaked out causing speculation on the blogosphere of an alternative SNP-Conservative Unholy Alliance after the next general election, the Gord got down with Doctor Who, and a Conservative Opposition Day Motion on Post Office closures came close to causing red faces on the Labour benches.
Roll up, roll up! See the Eighth Wonder of the Parliamentary Estate: the amazing Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling ventriloquism act. SEE! Alistair deliver his first Budget as Chancellor! GASP! At the way that way his lips move so convincingly as he mouths stuff about "stability" and more tax on The Booze (cries of "shame" from students everywhere)! MARVEL! At the...yeah, that's enough.
Yep, it's Budget time people, and frankly after the incident and romance surrounding the culmination of the Lisbon Treaty in the Commons last week, I'm surprised we can all cope with the excitement.
Elsewhere, wee Nicky Clegg delivered his first address to the assembled Liberal Democrat masses at their spring Conference, the Speaker was on the receiving end of a bout of happy-slapping from a former member

At the end of January Westminster council announced a series of long overdue common sense parking measures aimed at no longer using parking enforcement as a money-making measure. The new common sense measures included:- White disabled badge holders now have a month to renew their expired permits.- Five minute allowance for resident permit holders on single yellow lines.- Resident permit holders can park in a suspended bay within their own zone for 2 days before being given a ticket.Unfortunately it now appears that Westminster parking wardens have also adopted a new approach to issuing tickets which wasn't mentioned back in January, namely placing out of order signs on parking meters only to then remove these signs and issue a ticket once motorists have parked there. Know of any other parki
Yeah, I was impressed too...that sturdy little beagle had me tuning in too. You would have thought he was Underdog the way he handled himself - his confidence, his swagger - what a handsome devil you are Mr. Uno. “Have no fear, Uno is here”, he has been crowned by the Westminster Dog Show.Uno, the stunning beagle, had alot of weight on his tiny little shoulders...Do dogs have shoulders? Well, he won anyway, Uno had the crowd from the beginning, he was just the canine of the moment. Like Snoppy of Charlie Brown fame, Uno simply melted our hearts. We all wanted this beautiful little beagle to pull it off. And he did in royal fashion, the Westminster Dog Show will never be the same. Now, to add to his glory...this small dog accomplished a feat that no other dog in his breed had ever succee
Beagles are known for their loud baying cry, their curiosity, their love of people and their messiness. They love digging, getting into garbage and howling. None of these traits seem to match those of the prim and proper dogs seen running around the arena at dog shows, but Tuesday that all changed. Doggie history was made when Uno, a nearly 3-year-old beagle, was awarded best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. By Wednesday afternoon, Uno the beagle already had been on the "Today Show," taped the Martha Stewart Show and was preparing to tape the Letterman show for Wednesday night. Uno also was the featured guest at a dinner for dog enthusiasts at the famous New York restaurant Sardi's, where he dined on steak. He is scheduled to ring the bell that opens the stock market Friday

The paralegal, John Gerard Hedderman, took on civil cases relating to divorces, child custody, and bankruptcy. He is being charged with two felony counts of grand theft, three counts of unauthorized practice of law, one count of second-degree commercial burglary and 10 felony counts of false impersonation. The question before me was related to gluttony.Should I consume another packet of Rolos or risk being ostracised by the Mobilefest organisers as "that man who ate all the sweets"?Deciding to treat my stomach later (and the biscuits on offer were simply orgasmic),I seated myself and turned my thoughts to the conference.Sadly I was only able to attend for the first two hours, having work to do, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The Programme:Max, a PhD student from the University of Westminster introduced Filmobile and showed a short (and slightly blurred) film about mobile filming. I didn't catch his last name because it was out of focus. Mobilefest is intended to foster a dialogue between the industry, filmakers and artists.Camille Barker:A PhD candidate with the SMARTlab at the University of East London, Camille has also been a modern dancer, sculptor and web designer, among many other roles.Clearly someone with experience of new media, she told us of her desire to showcase the relationsh

“This autumn the church is facing one of the most critical moments in the fight against abortion in the last 40 years. In October 1967 the Abortion Act received royal assent and abortion was legalised in this country. Since then 6.7 million abortions have taken place in this country, and 465 more are taking place every day.
This October, 40 years after the passing of the Abortion Act, Christians across the nation are standing up and being counted, refusing to be silent about the taking of innocent lives and the trauma that has been caused to women and families who have been affected by abortion. Services of remembrance, repentance and hope are taking place across the nation.
On the anniversary of the Act there will be a rally outside Parliament to demonstrate that the current situation is no longer acceptable. Please join us outside Parliament, at 2pm on 27th October. This is a chance for the church t

Westminster is the oldest, continuous sporting event in America. Over one hundred twenty years ago, the Westminster Kennel Club was initiated by a group of gentlemen who enjoyed sporting dogs, primarily Pointers and Setters. The group's frequent meeting place was held at the Westminster Hotel in New York City. The Westminster Kennel Club was established with a view to increase an interest in dogs, and thus improve the breeds, and to hold an Annual Dog Show in the City of New York.Considered to be one of the most prestigious of Dog Shows, this year, the show was won by James, a spaniel!
