Did you know that West Virginia provides enough coal to burn energy for over half of the United States?
Did you also know that in order to provide this energy the process of mountaintop coal removal has destroyed ecological habitats and family-owned land, and has contaminated local drinking water?

West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw's scrutiny of the sometimes unscrupulous debt collection industry demonstrates that the complaints of a few abused persons may lead to consumer justice for the many.

West Virginia has had an interesting political history. It was founded when it left Virginia after that state seceded in 1861. As a result, it started out as a GOP stronghold and then shifted to the Democrats during the 20th century. Today it remains basically-Democratic except for a trend to the GOP in Presidential races.

For all intents and purposes Clinton's win in the West Virginia campaign today is meaningless. While she will most likely attempt to use the win as further evidence that she can carry battleground states in November against John McCain, it doesn't make up for the fact that Obama has won twice as many states as she has. The exit polls also show an interesting cross section of sentiments in the ra

Senator Hllary Clinton won a decisive victory in the West Virginia primary by gaining over 60% of the votes including nearly 75% of white voters. The 2005 Energy Bill was written behind closed doors by Dick Cheney and his oil & coal industry buddies. It did very little, if anything, to generate a net gain for the environment or for renewable energy technology. It did expand funding for coal and ethanol, both of which contribute to global warming and destruction of the environment.

In anticipation of the Democratic primary in West Virginia, as well as the imminent end of the seemingly perpetual nomination process, my girlfriend and I went to Morgantown to volunteer for Obama's campaign this weekend. Good news, there are some Democrats here. A 74 year old white woman, offended by Hillary's recent comments about working class people, told me she is voting for Obama because he represents the working people and can actually change things. Dozens of other Morgantown residents we spoke with are enthusiastic Obama supporters, and it was clear that they appreciated canvassers' efforts to engage them and their neighbors.
Bad news, there is still an awful lot of racial and homophobic tension 'round these parts. West Virginia University had let out the day prior, so there w

Mill Point, W.Va-- 20 people are in the hills looking for the elusive Bigfoot after reports of tracks were made. There were sounds made by the big-footed creature according to members of Bigfoot Field Researchers on this West Virginia expedition. According to researchers there are over 6,000 Sasquatch residing here in the United States and Canada. There aren’t too many people that believe these due to lack of enough physical evidence. Maybe one day they might find the truth out, for now we watch the crazy people search in the deep woods of America! I have been in W. Va before and let me tell you there are plenty of woods to hide in!
Have you ever been to West Virginia? I have and its really beautiful and the hospitality..there are no words to describe it. My sister lived there and I visited once but it was not a planned vacation. It was a memorial for her and a celebration of her life. It was not an easy time for my family but the kindess of strangers seemed to help. Its the West Virginia way...and everyone is treated like family regardless of whether you are passing through or even just visiting. When I first started on the rain, I remember reading a very special lady. It was a post that made me feel and think. One of those posts that really impacted me and caused me to send her an e-mail. I asked her if Keyser, West Virginia was close

I wanted to talk about this yesterday but I'm swamped with work for school so from here on out be forewarned that the updates might be sparse. Heading into Saturday night it was pretty clear that one of the Top 2 teams in the country would lose setting up a situation where Ohio State could slide into the National Title game without having played since 1975. All signs pointed to Missouri being the team that lost because the Big 12 was a fraud conference all season, Kansas and Missouri were both slightly above average teams and it was pretty well agreed upon that Oklahoma was the best team in the Big 12. So should we have been surprised when they beat Missouri? Of course not. Do you ever remember the #1 team in the country not being favored in a Championship game - gimme a break Missouri you were a fraud team and you got exposed. The real surprise to me was West Virginia coming up short against the coaching mastermind that is Dave Wannstedt and his crutches. I don't think anyone has lo
Mount Vernon (NY) forward Kevin Jones announced his decision to attend West Virginia earlier this afternoon at a press conference. Jones was strongly considering Indiana, but ultimately chose the Moutaineers over the Hoosiers and Pittsburgh.
Ultimately, it was Bob Huggins and his ability to develop players like Jones in the past that gave the West Virginia the edge. Kevin’s brother Gerard offered the following comments to Adam Zagoria of the Zagsblog and NYChoops.net:
“Bob Huggins does the best job with tweeners like Kevin and getting them prepared for the next level,” Gerard Jones said. “With Huggins’ resume of developing players Kevin’s size and making them productive, we had to go with his resume.”
On a brighter note, Tom Pritchard, Matt Roth and Terrell Holloway have all signed and their letters have been received by Indiana according to John Decker of Hoosier Nation.
Devin Ebanks, the prized recruit of the class, is also signed, sealed and
To atone for a dismal showing last weekend in a 21-13 to South Florida, the 13th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers corrected their major problem from last week (turnovers) in demolishing the home team Syracuse Orangemen 55-14. The Mountaineers converted two deflected passes into touchdowns into touchdowns in the first half against the Orangemen (1-5, 1-1) to build a commanding 31-7 lead.
Mountaineer quarterback Pat White who last week sustained a thigh bruise against South Florida, was banged up again; however, he went 12-of-15 for 148 yards and a touchdown and also had 14 carries for a team-high 89 yards and a rushing touchdown, as well. One bit of good news for Syracuse on Saturday was that the much-aligned Orangemen defense held Mountaineer running back Steve Slaton, second in the nation with a 122.4 yards per game average, to 69 yards on 15 carries. Syracuse wide receiver Mike Williams led the Orangemen with 2 catches for 72 yards, including a 61-yard TD reception in the 3rd

The college basketball season wrapped up this week. The University ofTennessee won the women's NCAA tourney, the University of Floridaconquered the men's side. In the NIT tournament, the University ofWyoming was victorious on the women's side, while the Universityof West Virginia won the men's title. OR did they? After the champion-ship game between West Virginia and Clemson, won by the Moun-taineers 78-73, officials handed out commemorative T-shirts to thewinning team. There was a problem however. The last 'i' in Virginiawas missing on the T-shirts, so in reality, the players and coachesfrom the University of West 'Virgina' were holding up the champion-ship trophy. The University was quick to point out that the NITprinted the T-shirts, not the learning institution of the Mountaineerstate. hhmmm, do I go on a West Virginia joke bender, or should Ileave this alone? Charleston, West Virginia - West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw announced a settlement agreement with four affiliates of the nation's largest payday lender, Advance America, Cash Advance Centers, Inc. In the Big East opener for both teams, the West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the UCONN Huskies by the final score of 81-71 on Saturday afternoon in Morgantown, WV. West Virginia was led by Frank Young’s 22 points and Da’Sean Butler’s 16 points. For UCONN, they were led by Doug Wiggins’ career best 20 pts and Marcus Johnson’s 16 points.
UCONN got out of the gates slowly today and West Virginia took advantage of that. UCONN held the lead once at 1-0 and then trailed for the entire game. This was the first time since Dec 6th versus Northeastern that they had trailed in a game. It was also the first time they had trailed at the half all season.
Notes and Observations:
The starters were Price, Dyson, Johnson, Thabeet and Adrien.
I was impressed with Doug Wiggins play today. 10 of his 20 points kept the Huskies in the game in the first half. To me, he played like an upperclassman today.
UCONN came into the game today leading the nation in blocked shots with
Dallas Contracting Co., Inc. (website http://www.dallascontracting.com ) was contracted by Essroc Italcementi Group (Essroc) to demolish sixteen (16) cement and sand storage silos, several outlying buildings and also excavate out an area of property containing basements and foundations from former buildings and structures at the Essroc Cement Plant in Martinsburg, West Virginia. A portion of the plant needed to be demolished prior to Essroc's planned site renovation, representing a total investment of $320 million. Essroc is a leading North American cement producer headquartered in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, with an annual capacity of 7 million metric tons. Essroc is a member of Italcementi Group, one of the largest cement producers in the world, based in Bergamo, Italy. The standing silos and buildings comprised the bulk of the above grade demolition work. A bill before the West Virginia Legislature would allow counties to impose a per drink tax of up to 35 percent on all alcoholic beverages sold at bars and nightclubs. The Mountaineer State becomes the latest to target on-premise alcohol sales as a way to shore up rickety budgets.Counties adopting the tax would be allowed to spend the funds for regional jail costs and fire and rescue services. While these are certainly important services, many voters in West Virginia say they had not heard of the proposal and were concerned that elected officials were trying to pass the bill before a public debate was held. Many state governments are increasingly under pressure from local governments over unfunded mandates for a variety of social programs. Targeting drink sales at bars appears to be perceived as low hanging fruit by state legislators and without an organized response from bar and restaurant owners and patrons it is likely these types of taxes will proliferate.
