      West Virginia Screws The Pooch

Heading into Saturday night it was pretty clear that one of the Top 2 teams in the country would lose setting up a situation where Ohio State could slide into the National Title game without having played since 1975. All signs pointed to Missouri being the team that lost because the Big 12 was a fraud conference all season, Kansas and Missouri were both slightly above average teams and it was pretty well agreed upon that Oklahoma was the best team in the Big 12. So should we have been surprised when they beat Missouri? Of course not. Do you ever remember the #1 team in the country not being favored in a Championship game - gimme a break Missouri you were a fraud team and you got exposed. West Virginia annihilates Syracuse, 55-14
To atone for a dismal showing last weekend in a 21-13 to South Florida, the 13th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers corrected their major problem from last week (turnovers) in demolishing the home team Syracuse Orangemen 55-14.  The Mountaineers converted two deflected passes into touchdowns into touchdowns in the first half against the Orangemen (1-5, 1-1) to build a commanding 31-7 lead. Mountaineer quarterback Pat White who last week sustained a thigh bruise against South Florida, was banged up again; however, he went 12-of-15 for 148 yards and a touchdown and also had 14 carries for a team-high 89 yards and a rushing touchdown, as well.  One bit of good news for Syracuse on Saturday was that the much-aligned Orangemen defense held Mountaineer running back Steve Slaton, second in the nation with a 122.4 yards per game average, to 69 yards on 15 carries.  Syracuse wide receiver Mike Williams led the Orangemen with 2 catches for 72 yards, including a 61-yard TD reception in the 3rd

      West Virginia Basketball
The college basketball season wrapped up this week. The University ofTennessee won the women's NCAA tourney, the University of Floridaconquered the men's side. In the NIT tournament, the University ofWyoming was victorious on the women's side, while the Universityof West Virginia won the men's title. OR did they? After the champion-ship game between West Virginia and Clemson, won by the Moun-taineers 78-73, officials handed out commemorative T-shirts to thewinning team. There was a problem however. The last 'i' in Virginiawas missing on the T-shirts, so in reality, the players and coachesfrom the University of West 'Virgina' were holding up the champion-ship trophy. The University was quick to point out that the NITprinted the T-shirts, not the learning institution of the Mountaineerstate. hhmmm, do I go on a West Virginia joke bender, or should Ileave this alone? Let's see, did you hear about the tornado that hitWest Virginia? It caused $3 million dollars of IMPROVEMENTS!Or t

      UCONN Falls To West Virginia
In the Big East opener for both teams, the West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the UCONN Huskies by the final score of 81-71 on Saturday afternoon in Morgantown, WV. West Virginia was led by Frank Young’s 22 points and Da’Sean Butler’s 16 points. For UCONN, they were led by Doug Wiggins’ career best 20 pts and Marcus Johnson’s 16 points. UCONN got out of the gates slowly today and West Virginia took advantage of that. UCONN held the lead once at 1-0 and then trailed for the entire game. This was the first time since Dec 6th versus Northeastern that they had trailed in a game. It was also the first time they had trailed at the half all season. Notes and Observations: The starters were Price, Dyson, Johnson, Thabeet and Adrien. I was impressed with Doug Wiggins play today. 10 of his 20 points kept the Huskies in the game in the first half. To me, he played like an upperclassman today. UCONN came into the game today leading the nation in blocked shots with

West Virginia Bill Could Cause Bar Tabs to Jump by 35 Percent
A bill before the West Virginia Legislature would allow counties to impose a per drink tax of up to 35 percent on all alcoholic beverages sold at bars and nightclubs. The Mountaineer State becomes the latest to target on-premise alcohol sales as a way to shore up rickety budgets.Counties adopting the tax would be allowed to spend the funds for regional jail costs and fire and rescue services. While these are certainly important services, many voters in West Virginia say they had not heard of the proposal and were concerned that elected officials were trying to pass the bill before a public debate was held. Many state governments are increasingly under pressure from local governments over unfunded mandates for a variety of social programs. Targeting drink sales at bars appears to be perceived as low hanging fruit by state legislators and without an organized response from bar and restaurant owners and patrons it is likely these types of taxes will proliferate.
