Our diet has too little fiber and many of us don't exercise on any regular basis, and our poor digestive systems suffer the consequences.Bowel build up results from a sluggish bowel and can give you an unpleasant bloated sensation. The heaviness and queasiness it produces may even make you really feel ill all over. Colon cleansing may alleviate this problem by quickly getting rid of the toxins which may be affecting your entire body.An herbal colon cleanser may be the perfect answer. Coping with Depression (Wellness Activity 2)
Another way I try and cope with depressive episodes is to read inspirational books. He is a bestselling author, translator, and photographer, and an active participant in current scientific research on the effects of meditation on the brain. He lives in Tibet and Nepal, where he is involved in a variety of humanitarian projects."Ricard writes, "The search for happiness is not about looking at life through rose-colored glasses or blinding oneself to the pain and imperfections of the world. Nor is happiness a state of exaltation to be perpetuated at all costs; it is the purging of mental toxins, such as hatred and obsession, that literally poison the mind."It is also about learning how to put things in perspecti

Coping with Depression (Wellness Activity 1)
This morning, as I waited for my medication to kick in (I use a stimulant and it takes about 45 minutes to begin having an impact),I thought back on all the years when I sought help for this illness and how extraordinarily bad the advice and treatment was.The lack of insight about depression and bipolar mood disorder is stunning! The treatment is terrible. The pain it produces is legion. The devastation is inestimable. Then, I stopped that thought process and began focusing on the positive. I said the words that no doctor has ever said to me. "Susan, you need to remember you can heal yourself. You can change your body chemistry by the strength of your personality. You feel good about yourself and have high self-esteem. You must use your strengths to heal yourself."Depressive episodes don't happen in a vacuum. They are triggered by life events. You understand your recent losses and you have felt overwhelmed by sadness. Relatives have deeply disappointed you but this is not new behavior.

Wellness Vacations at Sunset Heal Mountain Retreat and Healing Center in Jamaica

I think Roaring River is one of those special places where you can witness the real beauty of nature. Watching the mineral springs flow from underground and cascade over the rocks and the lush green vegetation that grows around it is a perfect scene for me and I just love to sit and admire the place. On my second adventure to Roaring River cave I noticed these large sun shaped signs near the signs pointing to the River. The signs were shaped like a setting sun and I was intrigued by what they read. It said Sunset Heal Mountain Retreat and Healing Center. It just so happens that a friend was going through a cancer experience and I was interested to see what they offered at this place. Most people are concerned about their health, some are more interested in health than others, but generally all people want to know how to be more healthy.Very close to the beginning of the Bible are the instruction for the diet of a healthy human being. Herbs bearing seeds, and trees that have fruit giving seeds, these are to be the food of those healthy individuals, who will be suffering less of the diseases most common to man, especially as the Earth now groans with its resources depleted more than ever before in history. See Genesis 1:29.Health experts say that the more closely our diet and appetites ally themselves to these precepts, the more we will enjoy health and physical vitality. On the other hand, if we are careless regarding the food stuffs we partake of, we may suffer dire consequences, illness and even death in some instances. Find out if there are any foods, medications (prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal) or activities you need to avoid while taking your medication, and write these things down. Track your medications and moods. Learn all you can about your illness. Talk to your doctor about new treatments you might want to try. You might not feel better immediately. Allow yourself to slowly, gradually get back to your routine. Give yourself credit for doing small things like getting out of bed, dressing or having a meal. "The Way to Wellness" It's Time to Start a Healthy Life: Your 7 Days Program
How many times have you gone to sleep at night, swearing you'll go to the gym in the morning, and then changing your mind just eight hours later because when you get up, you don't feel like exercising? While this can happen to the best of us, it doesn't mean you should drop the ball altogether when it comes to staying fit. What people need to realize is that staying active and eating right are critical for long-term health and wellness -- and that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The more you know about how your body responds to your lifestyle choices, the better you can customize a nutrition and exercise plan that is right for you. When you eat well, increase your level of physical activity, and exercise at the proper intensity, you are informing your body that you want to burn a substantial amount of fuel. This translates to burning fat more efficiently for energy. In other words, proper eating habits plus exercise equals fast metabolism, which, in turn gives you mo

To see what everyone else is writing about the environment today, you can browse the blog action day website. At first I wasn’t sure where I would go with an environmental article. That’s because there are already countless articles listing practical tips about what you can do. It’s pretty simple to find them via search engine. I didn’t want to add to the clutter, but I did want to make a positive impact on the environment through my writing today. Environmental Wellness Principle (EWP) The environmental wellness principle is a term that I’m going to coin right now. If you aren’t benefiting the environment, you’re harming it. It’s as simple as that. If you’re reading this, you have internet access, which means you know, or can easily find out, many ways to be environmentally friendly. The only thing that remai

      Wellness Activities
While I'd like to be able to continue writing about the process of brainswitching that I talked about yesterday, I realize that I'm too stressed out to be able to do it justice. So, I'll finish this series next week.In the meantime, I know that stress can cause a depressive episode so I'm doing everything in my power to focus on wellness. For me, that means the following:1. I know that exercise is very important, so I'm walking every day, whether I feel like it or not.2. I also know that thinking too much about depression actually causes it. So...I am consciously refusing to think about past depressions or to categorize what I'm feeling as depressive symptoms.3. For me, music clears my mind. It's my version of mindfulness meditation. Thus, I'm carrying my harmonica in my pocket and playing it numerous times during the day.4. I know that disappointment in people can cause a depressive episode. While the behavior of some people in my life has been shameful, I am consciously refu

Myrtle Beach Wellness Expo Was Well Done
“Living Healthy in a Toxic World”, “Change Your Habits, Change Your Life”,  “ Aura Photography.” This is not the type of talk usually heard along the Grand Strand.  The Wellness Expo, held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center this weekend, aims to change that. The event was sponsored by the South Carolina Wellness Council.  This is not the first expo, but I was told, the biggest yet.  Now, we are in Deep-Fried Pickle Land, so “big” is loosely defined here.  There were 50 exhibitors (which is quite a good turn out), but not enough people came to see all these great vendors.  Some of the brave vendors who put loads of hard work are:  Natural Awakenings Magazine, The Mumford Institute, Hyman Vineyards, Hibiscus Spa. and the Surfrider Foundation. As Myrtle Beach keeps growing and people are moving from all parts of the world here, the demand for health conscious services will grow and the pioneers wh

      Seeking Wellness (Part 2)
I agree with my friend that people who seek wellness are more likely to find it than those who don't. I have also learned--mostly by writing this blog and reading other people's blogs--that some people don't seem to want to get well.Quite honestly, I have been stunned by the number of bipolar blogs where people dwell on the negative aspects of life, ruminate about all the bad things that have happened to them, and act as if they're powerless to make changes.I've spent years reading about healing and wellness and all the literature confirms that dwelling on the negative without finding the positives will only make you feel worse and worse. While we all have bad days and unhappy thoughts and feelings, and I do believe it's important to "write them away," I also believe that keeping a sense of humor, putting things in perspective, and finding the "good stuff" is a critical part of healing.Unlike my friend, I do believe in miracles. In my case, the miracle was "hope." For years, d

      Seeking Wellness (Part 1)
I was talking with a friend who suffers from clinical depression and he said, "Don't you think there are some people who just don't want to get well?""What do you mean?" I asked."Well, you know how hard you worked to try to get well when you were so sick? You read everything there was to read about depression and manic-depression. You took your medication religiously. You tried mega-vitamins, acupuncture, therapy, naturopathy and a host of other activities that didn't work. But you didn't quit. You found that doctor of integrative medicine, and continued your research, and starting exercising regularly and playing music, and well...you get my point.""Yeah," I said."I did the same thing, and now we're both well--most of the time.""It's a miracle, isn't it?" I said."It is," he answered. "But I don't believe in miracles. I believe that if you work hard enough, and are willing to pursue every available option, and you use all of your energy to try and get well, then the odds of get

Vision for Change: A Campaign for Wellness in America
IF… parents had to give up custody of their children for them to receive treatment for cancer…If people with heart disease ended up on the streets or in prisons because they couldn't get help…If businesses lost billions of dollars due to avian flu…If 30,000 people died each year due to airplane accidents… This nation would demand action. When it comes to mental health disorders, there are no "ifs." Loss of child custody, homelessness, incarceration, lost productivity, and an epidemic of suicide are realities in communities across the country. Mental health is fundamental to overall health and research confirms the link between mind and body and demonstrates that mental illnesses are treatable when individuals have access to appropriate services. We call on Congress to embrace our Vision for Change and make mental health a national priority to ensure wellness for all Americans. Our Vision for Change: 1. Eliminate discrimination in access to

Oink, Oink My Good Man. Health and Wellness Doesn't Cause Cooties!
Mashable is one of my favorite sites. In addition to ehealth, I have a deep interest in the evolution of the "social Web" and its use to bridge the differences that keep people apart (though to be fair, I also have a deep interest - and fear - of the Web's ability to isolate people and monopolize time better spent on "real" things). When I saw the headline PeopleJam gets Funded for Health Social Network on my RSS feed this afternoon, I was excited as I assumed I'd find a post from Pete Cashmore shoring up my argument from yesterday that health-related social networking sites are the Next Big Thing. How wrong I was!PeopleJam, an LA-based social network for health and lifestyle, has been funded by Bob Pittman’s fund and TiVo CEO Tom Rogers. It’s a place to share life experiences and goals, and will add unique video content from experts in topics like relationships and spirituality. Debut of Wellness CORE Natural Dog Food: a High Protein & Grain Free Dog Food
Knowledge of pet nutrition is increasing every year and not all experts agree with each other on how certain data should be interpreted. One group supports the ‘scientific assembly theory’ where a diet can be scientifically engineered. Composed of all required nutrients, coming from a range of different sources and on a mathematical level everything your dog needs is present. A second groups theorizes that Mother Nature will always beat science. This school of thought we can call the ‘natural or holistic theory’. Human grade ingredients are used and any meat-by products or artificial additives or preservatives are avoided. A new holistic dry dog food was launched in July 2007 by the Wellness brand of Natural Food and Treats for Pets. This product is developed by followers of the second school of thought. Wellness CORE Dog is based on the raw feeding philosophy and the belief that “You are what you eat!”. (more…)

      Bipolar Wellness Walker (Part 3)
Again, I'm writing about times past...At the time of these debilitating depressions, I often thought of ways to try and feel better. Although it's difficult for people who have never experienced a depressive episode to understand, it's the most horrific experience to have so little energy that you can barely get out of bed.And yet, once the depression is over--and if you cycle into a hypomania--it's almost impossible to imagine ever feeling so lifeless.Still, at the time of these depressions, I used to come up with ideas for items or support services that would help me. In a debilitating depression, I knew it was very important for me to sit outside in the sun. And I often would do that...just go outside (I live in Los Angeles where the weather is sunny most of the year) and at the very least, just sit in a chair and feel the sun on my face.I also knew that exercise is important--even if I couldn't do it. During a depression, I wondered why we bipolars don't quality for physi

      Bipolar Wellness Walking (Part 2)
Just to clarify...this is a story about a depression that took place many years ago...So...I'm feeling terribly depressed and I can't get better. The medication my psychiatrist has been prescribing isn't working, and neither is acupuncture, St. John's Wort, or any mega-vitamins, minerals or amino acids.Swimming somewhat helps but I can't afford to join a gym with a pool and my brother has taken away the key to the communal pool (a facility for the people in his non-gated but affluent community) gate because I was late in returning it (he also has a pool in his backyard).I've spent weeks searching the Internet for success stories and can't find any. I do find the study that I wrote about yesterday. I've decided that I'm going to try and "walk away this illness." My problem is that I'm having difficulty breathing (my reaction to the mixture of medications I'm taking), my face looks like Edvard Munch's painting, The Scream, I have no energy whatsoever, and am barely able

      Bipolar Wellness Walker (Part 1)
When I’m depressed, exercise is one of the last things I feel like doing. Years ago I asked my psychiatrist (who I saw for four years) whether exercise would help alleviate depression. He said, “There is no evidence to support that it does.” Of course, he has since been proven wrong. Researchers at Duke University Medical Center studied 156 depressed patients 50 and older and found that after 16 weeks, those who exercised showed significant improvement compared to those who either took medication alone or those who combined medication and exercise. In a six-month follow-up study, Duke psychologists found that depression returned in only 8 percent of the patients in the exercise group, versus 38 percent for the drug-only group and 31 percent for the drug and exercise combined group. And Dr. Robert N. Butler, President of the International Longevity Center at Mount Sinai Medical School in New York City, said, “If exercise could be put in a pill, it would be the numb

      Believing In Wellness
Getting ready for work the other day, my 12 year old developed an ear ache. I knew it was nothing serious given her age and the fact that only minutes before she was fine. Yet, the temptation was too great to not take a quick peek. That is the blessing and curse of being a doctor-mom! So, peering in I confirmed what I already knew: nothing was going on. True, she had a tad of fluid from allergies but I didn't need an otoscope to know that since she was a known hay fever sufferer and the pollen count was through the roof that week. A touch of over the counter ibuprofen and allergy meds later, she was on the road to feeling better and without a real doctor's visit. It occurred to me as I was driving to work that my day would likely be filled with similar complaints, as typical. Despite the fact that most kids truly are well, parents often have times believing in that wellness and come in very quickly at the first sign of trouble, or perceived trouble. You may think that

What would you do for skin that's soft, fresh and unblemished? All the expensive skin care products in the world won't achieve healthy skin without help from your diet. Here's how the Better Skin Diet will help cleanse your skin from the inside out so you can look and feel great: • Fish contains oils that will help nourish your skin. This diet includes fish options at lunch and dinner to add luster and softness to your complexion. • Ground flaxseeds are an excellent source of omega-three fatty acids, which promote good skin health. This meal plan adds flaxseed to your breakfast cereal for a healthy start to your day. • Vitamin A is essential for healthy skin. This diet includes plenty of dark orange (carrots, sweet potatoes, winter squash) and dark green (broccoli, spinach, kale) vegetables -- all of which are high in vitamin A. • Vitamin E helps promote great skin, which is why this diet includes nuts such as hazelnuts and almonds -- which are high in vitamin E -- as

      Defining Bipolar Wellness (Part 2)
Although I spent about ten hours in the last four days reading sentences and paragraphs by a slew of famous authors, some of whose books I've read many times and some, not at all, and felt that I was on holiday rather than at work and thinking about "illness and wellness" and what I've been writing about--when I awakened this morning, I realized that I now see my path more clearly. To me, writing about wellness isn't just focusing on topics related to being bipolar. Before my diagnosis, when I was well most of the time, I felt good because I pursued my passions in the same way that Ms. Prose studies literature. And these days, despite my diagnosis, I have a range of interests that have nothing to do with being bipolar. I read books on writing, music, photography (a new interest), woodworking, religion, art, wellness, table tennis, politics, song writing, and healing, among others. In the last few weeks, I have read Coming to Light, a biography of Edward S. Curtis, the photographer who

      Defining Bipolar Wellness (Part 1)
I took three days off from blogging because my posts had gotten a little too intense--for me. After fourteen years of remaining silent about this illness, at least publicly, it seemed as if I had so much to say that I couldn't just write short posts or "fun" posts. I felt compelled to tackle difficult topics and write about "important" subjects that I had longed to read about--for all those years--but couldn't find in the books and blogs I was reading.I realize that I am an "all or nothing" type person, which is either a personality trait or a part of my illness. Maybe it's a bit of both. Yet, after a few days of rest...I asked myself, "What does it mean to be a bipolar wellness writer? What is my responsibility to my readers? How can I help people achieve wellness? How do I define wellness? What are bipolar wellness topics?"I spent a few days noodling this over. I "noodle" in different ways. Sometimes, I think about specific questions. Sometimes, I do research--either in

Blogging My Way to Wellness: A Confession (Part 4)
(Final post of this series)I decided that independent of past experience,I would try blogging once again. For me, the key was to figure out a blog name that would attract positive and uplifting people. And I wanted to write content that would make me feel better, not worse. My first title was Bipolar Wellness. I tried that for a few weeks before I decided that perhaps it was a misnomer. While I seek wellness, I'm not well all the time. So I changed it to Bipolar Wellness Seeker. I think that I kept that title for a few weeks before I decided it sounded kind of wishy-washy. I imagined myself "seeking wellness forever but never finding it."My next title, which I only kept for few days was Bipolar Wellness Warrior. While it's true that I sometimes dream I'm a Wellness Warrior, I was afraid that others might think I have a violent side. In truth, I was thinking more in terms of the book, Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior. So, now I've become the Bipolar Wellness Writer, and t

source: AcostaRecently I find myself comparing the English and German word equivalents and seeing which I like better. I'll stick with the English word tender over the German version, zart, it's an auditory oxymoron. But sometimes English goes a stray for me and I want to run from my own language. Take the English butchery of gynecology, and you get the short and whiny: Gyno. It's not even a word. What's worse it rhymes with rhino, which is not something I want to visualize during an exam. The voice of Lois Griffin of Family Guy (Hey, I visited the Gyno today.) echoes in my head when I think of this unword. Ugh, it is concussion inducing. To me, the word in German, Frauenarzt, sounds so much better. Neutral. Tender. Okay, maybe you know where I'm going with this. I had a wellness visit with the Frauenarzt yesterday. My first annual medi-pelvic excursion in Germany. Although, I must confess I cheated. Here's how it happened..=> Read more!
