      Social Welfare by Government Actions?
The purpose of this essay is to address the role of government for private market and to find out the extent and the scope that government’s involvement with private establishments can be justified by economics. It seems to be assumed that government has a fundamental and necessary role in the business of private enterprises. This [...]

However, we believe it is important for corporations to look beyond charity and redefine the act of ‘giving back’. Corporations must look at cultivating and encouraging social entrepreneurship in society

It isn't hard to see that when the government takes more and more of your money, you begin to ask the question, why? I am not opposed to taxes at all. In fact, looking at this great nation, I can't help but be grateful for the tax contributions that have funded my education, my roads, highways, etc. Indeed, this country wouldn't be what it is without faithful taxpayers. Now, back to the question: Why does the government need to continue taking more and more and more money? Environment » Blog Archive » Animal welfare vs conservation: the case of China’s tigers | Blogs | Reuters.com
An interesting case: A project in South Africa run by an animal conservation charity is trying to save the South China Tiger by creating an environment where they can learn to hunt, and other survival skills. A laudable cause, but where it gets controversial is that in order for the tigers to learn hunting and other predatory skills, they are provided with live animals to hunt and kill, from chickens for the tiger cubs to blesbok, a kind of antelope, for the adults. The SPCA (society for the prevention of cruelty to animals) is appalled at such a practice and is howling their righteous indignation. “It is a spurious argument that carnivores need to be fed animals, live. Not in captivity they don’t!,” the SPCA, which regards the practice as cruel, says. And you thought all roads

In a time when universal health and veteran care are nonexistent or underfunded for Americans the idea of federally funded chimpanzee retirement home seems even more ridiculous. In the entertainment industry, chimpanzees can work for just four or five years before growing stronger than humans and they can be aggressive too. Therefore, chimpanzees after four or five years within the entertainment industry can spend the rest of their lives not working. Currently, the longest living chimpanzee is 75 years old.President Clinton signed the Chimpanzee Health Improvement, Maintenance, and

This never works, especially when the kid is a Tinsel Town Brat keeping Mom and Dad in the high life. However, our various governments have no problem taking away our money, and then doling it out in ways designed to make us behave. For the most part they use the Internal Revenue Code. For example, the Congress wants you to buy fuel efficient cars. So you used to be able to get a $3000 tax credit after purchasing a Prius. But since Toyota has been so successful in selling their hybrid, the feds won't give you any more money—to get some of your tax money back you have to buy a Ford Mariner.Oh-- but if you qualify for the Alternate Minimum Tax the government is not going to give

The ground as you can see has absolutely no grass but the good thing is that is quite level and there are hardly any pot holes. They put a half mat but you have to make sure that it is nailed properly. So it is good for some of the players to reach earlier and make sure that the mat is nailed properly. You are not given any equipment including wickets so you have to carry your own. The boundaries are fuzzy which the caretaker of the ground will show you before the start of the match but you need to have a discussion between the captains and decide on the boundaries before the start of play since there is a stage and some walls that are quite close to the wicket.

There are currently plans to increase the portion of medical expenses borne by workers from 20% to 30%, possibly from 2003. General Health Annual health checks (kenshin) are provided free to just about everyone in Japan, including foreigners. They are provided once a year for company employees employed for over a year, and at junior and senior high schools. Pre-school children, the elderly and the self-employed receive free or subsidized medical care through their local ward or city office. (For more details on checkups, see the links below) Japan provides a wide variety of options when you’re in need of medical help. There are private and public hospitals and clinics but there is no ‘family doctor’ system. Many, if not most, foreigners have a less than good impression of Japanese medical professionals. S

Key findings include: High administrative expenses. The private Part D insurers report administrative expenses, sales costs, and profits of almost $5 billion in 2007 — including $1 billion in profits alone. The administrative costs of the privatized Part D program are almost six times higher than the administrative costs of the traditional Medicare program. Small drug rebates. The Crisis Imperative: Crisis Rhetoric and Welfare State Reform in Belgium and the Netherlands in the Early 1990s
Author: Sanneke Kuipers Paperback: 232 pagesPublisher: Amsterdam University Press (March 7, 2006)Language: EnglishISBN: 9053568085(R)Belgium and the Netherlands were perfect examples of the “welfare without work” policy that characterized European welfare states — until a political crisis in both countries during the early 1990s produced a surprising divergence in administration. While Belgium’s government announced major reforms, its social security policy remained relatively resilient. In the Netherlands, however, policymakers implemented unprecedented cutbacks as well as a major overhaul of the disability benefits program. The Crisis Imperative explains this difference as the result of crisis rhetoric—that is, the deliberate construction of a crisis as the imperative for change. It will be a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and anyone interested in welfare reform in the United States and abroad. Zip Password: T0sT@rN@

      Welfare Is For The Birds
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: With very few exceptions - like being seriously physically or mentally handicapped - public welfare should be abolished. Like all forms of socialism, it is degrading to the concept of free-will and to the human spirit in general. It encourages laziness and discourages people from taking responsibility for their actions and their own well-being. It rewards the least productive members of a society and forces without choice the productive ones to pick-up their slack. So here's a bedtime story for your children...or for liberals who need a good smack upside their thick skulls with the good ol' clue bat. I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue. Then came the poop. It was everywh

Scandinavians Reject High Taxes and Welfare State
We are so often told by liberals that the United States should be modeled after Scandinavian countries. Liberals tell us that their socialistic societies should be revered. Evidently, Norwegians are singing a different tune. It seems that Norwegians are becoming less and less accepting of high taxes to finance their social welfare state. Because of their welfare state, Norwegians are among the most heavily taxed people in the world. Consequently, the cost of goods and services in Norway is excessive. For example, a glass of wine at an everyday restaurant costs $16 U.S. A gallon of gas costs almost $9 U.S. The tax on cars doubles the cost of the car itself. The Big Government of Norway has determined that these taxes are necessary to help the environment, another reason to be against Al Gore. Comically, many Norwegian citizens are claiming that they do not get anything in return for their taxes. Is it surprising that the Government is ineffective at providing services even

      Welfare Casserole
This is embarrassing but I will share it anyway. I grew up very poor. One night, when ready to make dinner for my brothers and sisters, I had only a few items to cook, none of which seemed to make a meal. I had to improvise. I had the following ingredients: 1/2 lb hamburger1/2 chopped onion2 cups instant rice1 bag frozen vegetables medley (broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, corn)1 can cream of chicken soupSeasoning to tasteBrown the hamburger and onion. Drain and add rice (uncooked), vegetables and soup. Bring to a boil, cook for 30 minutes (or until rice is done).Believe it or not, it tasted really good. I've improvised and substituted over the years. I like it with cream of celery soup and cream of mushroom; I've tried the various mixed vegis and it is good with a medley or a one particular vegetable. I've also added cans of mushrooms and water chestnuts. Additionally, I have substituted chicken and turkey for the hamburger. Finally, it is really good with parmesean or

The Hyatt Regency Buffalo will get an $11 million renovation, with the state footing nearly half the tab as part of a plan to boost convention business and tourism. The Hyatt is the only hotel that is physically connected to the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, and creating a modern “headquarters hotel” to lure large groups of visitors could help bolster Buffalo’s ailing convention business, tourism officials said. The bottom line is that billions of our dollars are spent to subsidize private businesses.  The result is far more harm than good to our economy. Indonesian workers march to ask for higher wages, better welfare
Tens of thousands of workers assembled across Indonesia to mark International Labor's Day on Tuesday and demand better wages and welfares amid tight police security, but there has no violence and casualty reports yet. With waving trade union banners and posters asking for higher wages, denouncing child labor and other appeals, they had a mass walking to State Palace. There were 33 labor organizations joined the march in Jakarta with anticipation of about 10 thousand people. In order to secure the march, thousands of riot police officers were stationed in front of State Palace and other strategic areas in Jakarta, with barb wires and water canon vehicles prepared to anticipate violent mob. The May Day rally last year was marred by vandalism with violent mob destroying traffic lamps, street separators, flower pots and even burning government vehicles.

      Animal Welfare Act - Welcome
Here in the UK the new Animal Welfare Act came into force this week. The five main obligations for any dog owner in the UK now are:A suitable environment (where the dog lives) - that means the dog must be protected from the extremes of temperature and weatherA suitable diet (what it eats and drinks) if you feed your dog so much tat he is clinically obese you will contravne this Act .To be able to behave normally - as a dog. To be housed with or apart from other animals, (whatever is best for that particular animal). To be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease - not leaving your dog suffering from an infection or open wound.I really hope this helps all dogs, cats and other pets get the basic care they deserve.Tags:dogs, weblog, pets, diary, dog food,

Is Love Enough for Your Dog’s Best Welfare?
Often times the very reason we get a dog is for love.  A living being that will love us no matter what.  Unfortunately in the name of love what ends up happening is not what the intention originally was.Your new dog comes home and over indulgence is a mild description of how your new dog gets treated....all done with the thought by letting the dog do whatever she wants you are giving her love.  It's not long and you are spinning your head around wondering what happened to your home and why you are more frustrated then ever...and who IS in charge anyway?Establishing Pack Leadership From the BeginningVery important.  No matter how cute your new dog is, establishing yourself as the leader is imperative.  How is this done?  Well, it's labeled a lot of things in the dog training world, but one of the simplest is NILIF.  Nothing In Life Is Free. What does this mean for your dog?  Everything your dog does or gets she has to do something for it.  U

An Anomaly in the Warfare-Welfare thesis?
As many may know, there is a strong correlation between the size of government and the occurrences of wars and emergencies. Looking solely at American History, major wars and "emergencies" result in bigger government:The Global War on Terror - Big Government "Conservatism", Bush-style. Non-defense spending is skyrocketing and we have the largest new entitlement program, the Medicare Prescription Drug Act Vietnam - "Guns n' Butter"; The Great Society Korea - Death of the Old Right ( the birth of "Buckleyism"); New Deal programs cemented into permanence WWI - Progressivist programs, such as the Income Tax, the Federal Reserve, and the 17th Amendment WWII/Depression - The New Deal, price controls, income tax withholdingsThe Civil War -- Legal Tender laws, the Income Tax, centralized banking, etc. The War of 1812 - Hyperinflation, price controls The Revolutionary War - Hyperinflation, price controlsWhat is missing from this list is the Mexican-American War. The Polk Administration radical

      Welfare and Warfare
I ran across a very interesting viewpoint while surfing some enlightened blogs.  Everyone knows that the military has been struggling and failing, for the most part, to meet its recruiting goals in light of the toll Iraq is taking on our troops.  What better way to increase recruiting than increasing the number of potential recruits?  Increasing the federal minimum wage is the perfect answer.  Everybody knows that an increase in the federal minimum wage constitutes a “raise” to all those who work now or will work in the near future at the lowest legal rate of pay. Why, 650 prominent economists, including five Nobel Prize winners, recently signed an open letter in support of raising the minimum wage. Now, the minority, non-Nobel-Prize-winning view that is found, for example, among Austrian economists and 13,000 labor economists, holds, along with the Law of Supply and Demand, that if the price of a good (or service, like labor) is raised, less of it

      [2003] Randy - Welfare Problems (Mp3 Download)
Review by Johnny Loftus @ allmusic.com "I guess you wanna see the look on my face when you smash it," Randy mouthpiece Stefan Granberg sneers on "A Man in Uniform." The Modern Lovers/Ramones-style singalong is only one of the high points on the Swedish quartet's seventh full-length, Welfare Problems, an album that finds Randy's ideology undiluted by the addition of buzzing guitar hooks and
