      One weird dude
Mondays are a very good day to be mellow...Mixmaster Morris, aka The Irresistible Force, is one weird dude. The kind of weird that only a couple of decades of taking enough psychedelics to render an elephant retarded will make you. Pleasant guy to chat with though... good stories as you'd imagine. Heck, he even autographed one of my CD decks for me after he used it for a gig. But if you don't

      Weird Product From The Past
Sizzlean, the alternative bacon made from beef, was billed as 50% less fat than bacon. It was also one of the first imitation breakfast foods. Beef made to look and taste like bacon? That sounds disgusting. These ads were all over the place in the late 1970's until sometime in the mid-80's. The commercial below is from 1985.Anyone else remember this stuff? I actually remember having it as a kid once, but I don't remember whether it was passable as bacon or just nasty. Of course if it came around today I would never try it. It's amazing what kids are forced to eat. Sizzlean was probably also pumped full of umpteen chemicals to give it that 'bacon taste'.

Science has done it again! Now altering an enzyme in the brain can contribute to weight loss. Duke University scientists, in studies in mice, blocked the enzyme CaMKK2 in mice and then measured food intake. Sure enough, the mice with the block ate less and lost weight!'"Remarkably, we find that blocking CaMKK2 in the brain prevents the deposits of fat in liver and skeletal muscle that are characteristic of obese, diabetic patients," said Dr Tony Means."We find this very exciting and are trying to understand the mechanism responsible for this protective effect, as well as to identify more potent drugs to inhibit CaMKK2."'OY!Tags: weight loss, Diet, News, lynda lippin

Why Beautiful Women Marry Ugly Men | Weird Facts
weird factsWomen seeking a lifelong mate might do well to choose the guy a notch below them in the looks category. New research reveals couples in which the wife is better looking than her husband are more positive and supportive than other match-ups.The reason, researchers suspect, is that men place great value on beauty, whereas women are more interested in having a supportive husband. Researchers admit that looks are subjective, but studies show there are some universal standards, including large eyes, "baby face" features, symmetric faces, so-called average faces, and specific waist-hip ratios in men versus women.Past research has shown that individuals with comparable stunning looks are attracted to each other and once they hook up they report greater relationship satisfaction. I had a client recently who said "I just want to feel normal." I understand the sentiment and yet my reaction when I hear this goal (which comes up fairly regularly) is mixed. Generally I find the underlying desire for "normal" is a need to feel OK in your own skin, to feel accepted and acceptable. At the root is some combination of shame and exhaustion: shame (the wellspring of most dysfunction) at feeling somehow defective and exhaustion at trying so hard to achieve an elusive peace of mind. When exploring the concept of "normal" what often emerges as its feared opposite is the dread of being "weird". There is an old saying that it's risky to compare your insides with somebody else's outside. In other words it's easy to look at someone else and think they have it all together while k

What makes it even a bigger bummer is that on Friday I knew that this type of thing was going to happen so I reminded myself on the bus to remember to do it once I got home. I think reading Oliver Twist on the ride home was not the proper step to take to ensure that I would remember. I think from now on I will pay the credit card as soon as I get the statement. Its may cost me a few pennies in int

"7 Random/Weird Things About Me" Is The Meme That Never Ends
I was just tagged for a meme this evening, which reminded me that I was tagged for another meme about one month ago, so Paige Jennifer is just going to have to be patient while I do this other meme first.Candid Yammering's Day Dreamer tagged me for a meme back in mid-March. It is another variation of what seems to be everybody's favourite meme, 7 Random/Weird Things About Me.May I just say glory be to the meme during this time of The Great Cold Virus What Whoops The Ass and Renders One Vacuous. Until right now, I managed a revolving series of three thoughts today. The first was I'm hungry. The second was I'm thirsty. The third occurred every time my cat, Onion, rolled over to show me his stomach: I haz belly. Let me show you it.Here goes.7 Random/Weird Things About Me:If I let my chin

Postal officials defend $13,500 steak dinner | Weird Facts
weird facts - When the U.S. Postal Service rang up a $13,500 tab at an Orlando steakhouse, it spared no expense during a five-hour meal that government investigators are calling "abusive" in its extravagance. The order -- charged to government credit cards -- included more than $3,000 for drinks, more than $500 for shrimp cocktails and almost $900 for mini crab cakes, according to the Government Accountability Office, the investigate arm of Congress. And then there's the steak. "The better question is probably what they didn't order," GAO investigator Gregory Kutz said Wednesday. He counted 81 entrees -- including just about every kind of steak -- from the 2006 feast at Ruth's Chris Steak House on Sand Lake Road. The GAO cited the Orlando meal as part of an overarching audit into abuse of gov

What!? No One Has Weird Foods That they Eat?
Or... you don't want to share it? LOL. I posted this morning about the first 12 'odd' foods or ways I eat foods after I picked apart a few little Snickers candy bar bites this week. Looking at the little building of chocolate I inadvertently made brought to mind a few other times when my family has looked at me when one eyebrow cocked and remarked; "You're so weird..." Does This Seem Weird to You? How We Eat Foods.
I have to admit that I have some quirks when it comes to food... but since it's 'me' eating what 'I' want, and probably have all my life, it just doesn't seem weird to me until someone points it out. Two nights ago I was craving something sweet and other than leftover birthday cake there was nothing to munch on. I remembered some leftover mini-Snickers bites (you know, the little 1 inch size

Why Things Cost $19.95 | Weird Facts
weird factsEver wondered why retailers price goods at $4.99 rather than $5.00? Here is the best scientific explanation I read:Why Things Cost $19.95, by Wray Herbert, SciAm Mind Matters: ...[M]ost of us are motivated by the desire for a fair deal, and we employ some sophisticated cognitive tools to weigh offers, fashion responses, and so forth—all the to-and-fro in getting to an agreement. But how does life’s dickering play out in the brain? And is it a trustworthy tool for getting what we want? Psychologists have been studying cognitive bartering for some time, and several basics are well established. For example, an opening “bid” of any sort is usually perceived as a mental anchor, a starting point for the psychological jockeying to follow. ... What makes us settle on a response?

The weird stuff just keeps on keeping on
I can't believe the twists and turns that my life keeps on taking.  Last weekend I had a lounge room full of pretty girls, but they were all way too young for me. Emma had a sleep over pool party at our new place! The trouble was the pool maintenance guy had been told to turn the pool heater off at the end of daylight savings and he forgot that it ended a week later this year so the pool was freezing. Swimming was canceled and replaced with a "Bring It On" movie marathon. I have finally finished with the crappy landlords from my last rental place. I picked up my lease refund cheque today. In the end they dropped all of their stupid arbitrary and incorrect claims in return for me paying them $40 to remove the dead man ferns that they killed themselves. I know that you

At the same time, some are starting to wonder if something has gone very wrong. In the last few months, two among their ranks have died sudden

Martin Amis and his weird struggle with Islamism
Martin AmisWriter Laura Miller does a fascinating job of deconstructing Martin Amis' latest diatribe against Islam in an article for Salon. Reviewing Amis' new book, “The Second Plane : September 11: Terror and Boredom,” (214pp. Cape, $26), she notes that the British author, who got in trouble last year for his hysterical remarks that he wants to punish Muslims until they "get their house in order" by "getting tough with their children." It turns out that his is no Islamophobe but an “Islamismophobe” and has collected a series of his essays and articles written between Sept. 11 and 2007 that addresses the lunatic fringe of Islam. All religions have their lunatic fringe and Islam is no different, but Miller points out that Amis offers no new insight on how to deal with a band of

      Wacky & Weird Sleep Week...
I really have to work on getting back into a better sleep pattern - this week has been way off. Hubby's snoring woke me up again - even with my earplugs in! So I thought I'd take advantage of this time and get online. (In my house that's hard to do sometimes. We have three computers - but only one is connected to the internet & somebody seems to always be on... )We finished off our March budget in the black - Yippee! With property taxes & those couple of six month insurance bills due - it is always an expensive month for us. Setting aside that money in our irregular expenses savings account totally did the trick! Now I'm just waiting to hear back from the CPA to see what our income tax return is going to look like. Thankfully we were good & set aside money for that too..
