I have to say I wasn't looking forward to Oeufs Mollets Florentine. Poached eggs with spinach covered in sauce and broiled. How exciting is that? But then, the newest member to Whisk Wednesdays, Melissa of From Stovetop to Laptop, emailed everyone after making it earlier this week raving about how good it was: "OMGAWD. Holy cow. They were a FABULOUS brunch! So rich, decadent and well worth it!! We
This week's class about browning has us making another of my all-time favorite food: scalloped potatoes. But it's not just any scalloped potatoes. It's Gratin Dauphinois prepared with love using the delicate Le Cordon Bleu method. Layers of flavor are built, and not just by layering the potatoes. Oh no. That would be too easy.Steep the milkThe first step is to heat the milk and then steep it with
I'm doing this for my cousin (aka Dj Verz). Mojito Wednesdays @ Roe! Public opening is tonight!!! Bring a friend or two or three and have a great time! It's going down every Wednesday starting at 5 p.m. Enjoy different flavored mojitos and classic jams.
This next class is all about grilling and browning. And again it's another steak (entrecôte is traditionally a rib steak) that's smothered in onions, à la Lyonnaise. One dictionary said that Lyonnaise means "cooked with onions". And this recipe has lots of onions. Eight of them for a full recipe. Some are used with the potatoes as a side dish and the rest are used on the steak.Boiling and frying
One of my favorite meals that I order when I eat out is on the menu this week: peppercorn steak. At restaurants, however, I usually find the black peppercorns too spicy and overpowering. This recipe calls for green peppercorns, or poivre vert, which are also from the unripe berries of the pepper plant but have a milder taste than their black counterpart. I used the dried version of these green pep
More deep-frying this week. I swear, my doctor isn't going to be pleased with this curriculum I'm working through. Butter, deep frying, plus all the treats I'm making for Tuesdays with Dorie and Daring Bakers. I usually like to "hibernate" in winter and worry about beaches and bathing suits in Spring, but I really should start my workout regimen now given how much damage I've been doing lately. Her
Sole Belle Meunière means "sole prepared in the manner of a pretty miller's wife." It turns out I live 15 minutes from a working 19th century flour mill said to be haunted by a miller's wife named Ann Crosby. So I hopped in the car and visited this heritage site that still sells freshly-milled flour and daily bread—you can't get much more local than that!Watson's Mill in Manotick, Ontario, is a
This next class is all about sautéing and deep frying, and first up is good 'ol English-style fish 'n' chips (without the chips). Some call this England's national dish. There are 8,500 Fish and Chip Shop Proprietors throughout the United Kingdom — according to the National Federation of Fish FriersIn my experience, the best fish 'n' chips place is in the small, lakeside resort town of Regina B
This is a stew to celebrate Spring, but we're deep into Fall now in Eastern Canada. So I've mixed the celebrations and used a maple syrup sap bucket to show off the stew and placed autumn leaves around its base. We're still focusing on braising and stewing this week, and true to French cooking form, everything is cooked and seasoned separately and then assembled together at the end. Doing this adds
More comfort food for Fall this week. Last week a braise, this week a stew. Unlike a braise, a stew uses small chunks of meat and is covered with liquid while cooking, but the goal is the same: to take a cheap, tough cut of meat and make it tender and tasty. This is the perfect dish to celebrate the beginninng of Autumn. "The whole point of a braise is that it turns a somewhat tough piece of meat
Just wanted to let you know that I've been wrangling with Blogger and trying to come up with a new design for my blog. That took over my day (instead of writing up the Blanquette). I will write it up at some point, just not today. So sorry, but stay tuned...
Éstouffade (Es-too-fahd) de Boeuf Provençale or Pot Roast. Which sounds better? The French have a flair for making food sound fancy and delicious. And this dish doesn't just sound delicious, it is delicious.Éstouffade is a beef stew simmered slowly in a covered casserole dish. The technique is braising, where your goal as "Chef" is to take a cheap, tough cut of meat and make it tender and tasty
“Artist Workshop Wednesdays” - are kicking off next Wednesday, September 17th from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
There will be four sessions (each consisting of three Wednesday classes) that will focus on different art mediums. The first session focuses on drawing techniques, the second session on watercolor, the third on acrylic, and the final session will focus
Vinaigrette is versatile — it can be used as a sauce or marinade, but it's most commonly used as a dressing on salad. In this recipe, the vinaigrette is used as a marinade on the mushrooms and as a dressing for the salad.Note to brides: Do not order a Raspberry Vinaigrette on slippery butter lettuce for your wedding dinner! It may end up on your future mother-in-law's dress {or worse, yours!}."I
I finally decided to write about my "WWW" cooking. I posted a couple of recipes already from this but wanted to make a whole block about it.
So, in addition to the Wordless Wednesday Walkers, I do a big cooking in the morning.
I start with my Whole Wheat bread, as many of you saw pictures already. It has been a tradition for twenty years now at home. I get 14 slices of it. So the bread lasts for
Beurre blanc (burr BLAHN or burr BLAHNGK), which means "white butter", is a classic French sauce that turns half a pound of butter into something "light" and delicious. It's similar to Béarnaise sauce {without the tarragon or eggs} since it's a reduction of vinegar or white wine and shallots into which butter is whisked in, but it's a little easier since no eggs are involved. Again, we're emulsif
Sharp, briny, stinky. That’s anchovies and olives for me. I’ve tried to like these foods, but I still avoid them. This week, the curriculum that I’m following called for a discussion of compound butters, and the only recipe in Le Cordon Bleu at Home that contained a compound butter was Steak Mirabeau. The steak part was great, but the anchovy butter…not so good. So, I decided to make a bun

Even though I live across the river from French Canada where pea soup (soupe aux pois) is a national dish, I've never ordered pea soup in a restaurant or tasted split peas before, so I wasn't too thrilled to make this soup, and neither was my family in Saskatchewan! My sister suggested I make it when I return to Ottawa, but she wasn't so lucky with the Whisk Wednesdays' schedule. The kids passed o
I love the smell of onions cooking; it's one of my favorite smells. And French Onion Soup is one of my favorite foods. Although I made it earlier this year, this time I followed the recipe in Le Cordon Bleu at Home which calls for water as the base instead of stock. I found this intriguing since I thought the best onion soup was made with veal or beef stock. In the first taste test, we preferred t
Last week’s topic, Abortions for Earth?, sparked some great commentary, thanks to everyone who joined in! Andrea Zak of Schizofrenetic started a lively debate on her site, and my post was carried on BrazenCareerist. The conversation will continue until we all run out of steam I suppose, so feel free to join in.This week I turn to Universal Health Care, an oft-battled issue at BrazenCareerist. In
This next new addition to the blog has got me all excited. It's been stewing around in my head for several months now waiting for the right time to announce. I believe the time has come!Wordfull Wednesdays is an opportunity to hear many different bloggers' opinions and ideas about various topics. There will only be one topic each Wordfull Wednesday. It will be held every other week with a Mr. Link
Consommé Madrilène (kohn-sum-may) is a crystal-clear soup that is pure and clean-tasting, typically flavored with tomato, and served chilled. But getting this crystal-clear liquid requires fat-free stock and hamburger patties!I remember eating Campbell’s Consommé, made famous by Andy Warhol, for dinner when my mom was on her Weight Watcher’s kick. I actually enjoyed it with egg noodles, but
With the great success of my "What Exactly is Wrong with This Country" post (based on how much fun I had writing it and engaging in commentary) I thought I would create a series of themed posts to feature on Wednesdays with whatever quirk of humanity irks me that week. This article has irked me since last November, so this should be fun. I invite readers to chime in, suggest topics, and while disa
Bisque de Homard, or Lobster Bisque, is a once-in-a-lifetime soup. At $16 per bowl and $97 for a tureen, the word “soup” seems too simple and unworthy a description. Technically, it’s a bisque, but it needs a name deserving of its expense and grandeur. So you know what you’re getting into. So you’re prepared to savor every sip. So you’re prepared to slave in the kitchen for a whole day
White soup. White stock. White chicken. White button mushrooms. And a touch of pink from the ham. This is Velouté Agnès Sorel, a cream of chicken soup. Agnès Sorel was a mistress of French King Charles VII in the 1400s and this is one of several dishes named after her. This could also be the soup mentioned in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice:“As for the ball, it is quite a settled thing;and

Picking up where Wednesday in the Square left off downtown, Wednesdays on the Point is proving to be quite a success!
While I missed the first two weeks of performances, we were able to get out to Aunt Leni's Cafe this week for the third installment of the street concerts in Algiers Point. The sidewalk tables were filled and the street was lined with the lawn chairs of the spectators.&

Every Wednesday afternoon before I started my current work contract, I would go to see Jo. Jo is 84 years-old and lives in a hostel for the elderly, five minutes from where I live.
She signed up for Computer Connections, a program that matches people with limited mobility with those who are technically minded, in Jo's case, me.
Initially she wanted me to teach her how to set up Skype and her
I've got more shit on my plate than a fat man at an all you can eat buffet. For those you that have been down and checking WYDU since then, sorry, but I'm sure there are enough cats that weren't around during those times that it'll be something

If like me, you missed the first episode of Torchwood on BBC2, you will be pleased to know that BBC2, is repeating the show on Wednesdays @ 7pm. Im guessing the show might be edited, because of the pre watershed timeslot, but it shouldnt take the shine of it if you missed it first time round. Remember Wednesdays @ 7pm on BBc2, followed by the new show @ 9pm.

There are many things I hate about Wednesdays , by now people will associate my name with the “ Wednesday hater “ but hey , I want to make myself clear , clear and heard !! after a loooong think about the actual reasons I hate wednsdays , iv personally come up with a mountain of bad things !!
Firstly , the obvious They just sit in the middle of the week, bloating it out like a malignant lump. Causing people to use phrases like ‘hump day’. Has anyone not heard that? I worked yesterday , the day before , today and for the next two days , so in the immediate future I have nothing to look forward to , great !
Now I know people generally hate Mondays, but at least Mondays mean something, right? It’s the start of a new week. New things start on Mondays; new timetables, new jobs, new…things.
I actually managed to track down this “ well known poem “
Mondays child is fair of face,
Tuesdays child is full of grace,
Wednesdays child is full of woe,
Thursdays
We are going to hold off on $1k Tuesdays and World Wide Wednesdays for the weeks leading up to the unveiling of Argus so we have the budget to launch with a bang. I promise it will be worth the wait. Congrats to all the recent Posties who have grabbed these high dollar Opps.
As many of you know we have a large base of International Posties. Being that we are an American company the majority of our advertisers are currently in the US and are targeting US bloggers. Let's not get into that whole readership thing here, that is not what this post is about.
I want you all to know that I am aware that you get segmented out of some Opportunities. Last week we brought back 1K Tuesdays. 1K Tuesdays have no segmentation, The Opps are open to everyone no matter where you live or how big or small the blog.
This week we are going to introduce a new twist and see what you all think. 1K Tuesday will run as it did last week but from Wednesday at noon EDT to Thursday at noon EDT we will introduce some Opps that are only for bloggers living outside of America. We will have an 2 additional $50 Opps and 1 $150 Opp that are segmented only to exclude American bloggers. Depending on where you live that can be some big cash. Good luck all and let us know what you think.
It’s a lazy day around the BBHouse today, with our hamsters having fun with the HOH Camera and some last minute (and thankfully) quiet campaigning for votes going on by Mike and Kail.
Well, most people are having fun with the HOH Camera - Dick doesn’t want to take ‘normal’ photos and keeps trying to set up shots - they’re gonna be AWESOME! The other Houseguests were all for it, for a while, but now that his hour is running down, they’re getting pissy. Everyone (’cept Dani - who always is vocal about complaining to her dad) says ok, does what he asks, but then runs back to whoever listens with the whine “HE was making me do this…” (HELLO AMBER! SOMEONE please get her evicted!)
Is it just me, or are these the WEAKEST minded females EVER? Does it ever occur to them that they don’t HAVE to say or do anything they don’t want to? (Unless contractually bound by CBS, of course. Ha!) SPINES. These women need SPINES. MY da
Well, one thing I’ve done a lot more of lately is watching videos online. It’s about the most engaging thing to do late at night with a baby in one hand, the lights out and access to a mouse with the other. I’m finding video and the powers of technology are set to be an incredibly powerful tool in the years to come. Awareness can be raised about issues by anyone with access to a camera and a computer with the internet. I figure it would be nice for me to share some of the media I’ve come across, so you don’t have to waste your time browsing along. Possibly a weekly thing, I’ll try and post at least one or two videos I’ve come across that I found interesting and engaging. And, sometimes I’ll post one I just thought was funny. I might post some political bits, but just know, it’s only cause I found it interesting, not intending to brain wash you to one political side or the other, I don’t necessarily hold the same values or po
Today is Friday, I know. I’m not that mixed up. However, I wanted to draw attention to Marcus and his round-up of Wine Blogging Wednesday #33. I was included despite my missing the price range….
So many new wines to look for.

Perhaps garbage is a strong word, but I have not ever heard of either of these games: Xevious & Rush N Attack. Considering that nearly every retro release so far has been a staple of the 80s arcades or early home consoles, I am surprised that with two classic releases I have heard of neither....

I am not feeling well today (had a dental surgery - ouch!) so my Works For Me Wednesday is going to be short. I recommend this book called "His Needs Her Needs For Parents. When I applied the principles taught in this book by Dr. Harley, it works! It worked in improving our marriage. Dr. Harley originally write a book called His Needs Her Needs. It a helpful book too but the problems and difficulties that parents have were not addressed there so he write a second one hence the additional word in the title "For Parents".I have to go to bed. for more Works For Med Wednesday tips, go to Rocks in My Dryer.
