Last night Google released a new feature for Google Webmaster Tools named Content Analysis. Vanessa Fox’s Search Engine Land post named Google’s Webmaster Tools Adds More Diagnostic Features and Video Sitemaps is outstanding.   Basically, the Content Analysis feature shows you problem areas with your sites from an on-page search engine optimization standpoint. It shows very basic issues like title tag issues, meta tags and non-indexable content issues. I was just browsing through Google’s Webmaster Guidelines and saw that they have greatly improved them. Google actually provides examples and detailed information on things like complex URL structure, frames and Flash. Topics on the How can I create a Google-friendly URL structure? page include: Additive filtering of a set of items Dynamic generation of documents. Problematic parameters in the URL. Sorting parameters. Irrelevant parameters in the URL, such as referral parameters. Calendar issues. Broken relative links. That is invaluable information for Web developers. All Web developers should read that page. That page is something that you can refer clients to when they want assurance about your detailed robots.txt recommendations. That page also provides a great argument for updating the robots.txt standard to include wildcards (*) and end of line characters ($). After trying to get into the Microsoft webmaster tools, again, and clearing all my cookies and clearing my cache I was getting really frustrated with it. The I had a brain wave what if I use Internet Explorer to try and get in. No way that Microsoft would make a website that webmasters who didn’t use a crappy browser would not be able to access! Yeah right - first time in IE and all of a sudden I can add sites like Xmas came early. Un-fookin-believable. To get into Microsoft Webmaster Tools you need to use IE. Am well annoyed by this. Microsoft has launched a Webmaster Tools program to match Google’s Webmaster Tools. While it is not as feature heavy as Googles tool, it is a start and better than Yahoo’s Site Explorer. Adding your site and verification is simple as adding a meta tag to your header. Microsoft does not provide a great deal of information. Microsoft does provide a domain rank between 1 and 5. They also provide the top outgoing links and top incoming links. Thats about it. The one down side is Microsoft does not update (spider) your site immediately. It has been 2 days and my site has not been updated in the Webmaster Tool. Microsoft offers a forum and blog to supplement the Webmaster Tools.

First a little disclaimer, I am not an expert in social bookmarking. I’ve used a couple, maybe a dozen of services, and slowly gathered experience. I recently did an experiment where I used Ask.com as my main search engine. While the Ask.com SERPs have the best organization of the major search engines, the actual organic search results from Ask.com are not good. Because of the less-than-ideal organic search results, webmasters and SEOs don’t take Ask.com seriously. Ask.com doesn’t bring traffic so SEOs don’t even mention it when talking about major search engines. This is bad for Ask.com. Search engines need the active support of webmasters. Webmasters give search engines free coverage and links. Links are (obviously) good for traffic. For example, Yahoo.com pages frequently come up in the Google SERPs. One way that Ask.com could start getting positive coverage and links from webmasters and SEOs is to offer genuinely useful webmaster tools. Supongo que la mayoría de los poseedores de webs preocupados por el posicionamiento de las mismas conocéis esta herramienta de Google. Hasta ahora la encontraba especialmente útil para localizar posicionamiento en diferentes palabras clave, controlar los linkbacks (enlaces entrantes), ajustar la velocidad de rastreo y alguna cosa más, pero la verdad es que no hacía nada que no se pudiera hacer con otras herramientas (quitando los ajustes y datos del spider).
